Introduction Surgical site infection (SSI)1 frequently develops postoperatively; this condition can be fatal for both surgeons and patients. Many factors are responsible for the infection of surgical incisions, including smoking status, diabetes, advanced age, hypoproteinemia, and internal fixation.2,3 In spinal surgery,4 SSI is associated with prominent morbidity, healthcare expenses owing to readmission and reoperation, and poor prognosis.5,6 Artificial intelligence is widely used in medical research, and the predictive effectiveness of machine learning is widely recognized. After achieving great success in various predictions, machine learning has attracted the attention of clinicians and medical researchers.7,8 In our previous studies, we constructed a machine learning prediction model and demonstrated good prediction ability.9,10 In this study, a machine learning model and a web-based prediction tool were developed to predict SSI in patients undergoing lumbar spinal surgery.
