US Chess Affiliate Tournaments and COVID-19 – uschess.org

Many of our tournament organizers are facing tough decisions due to the general guidance from authoritative sources to avoid large gatherings because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) global pandemic. If there is a tournament you were planning to play in, you should first make sure it is still being held before you make a potentially unnecessary trip, up to and including the day of the event.

We are trying to make this process as easy as possible for our members by listing cancellations/postponements in the Upcoming Tournaments area of our website located at:

http://www.uschess.org/tlas/upcoming.php

Click here for an example of what you might see if you search for all tournaments in Texas (Note: this is a sample image and not a live update of current Texas events).

We are updating this area immediately upon receiving updates from our organizers. Of course, you can always use the contact information given in an individual Tournament Life Announcement (TLA) as well, which often have an email, phone number, and sometimes an organizers website.

We have taken other steps as well, including:

We have suspended certain rules: https://new.uschess.org/news/us-chess-rules-suspensions-due-covid-19/ We have made it free for organizers for organizers to use our email blast system to notify potential participants if they cancel a previously advertised TLA by simply contacting our TLA department at [emailprotected]. We have cancelled the National High School (K-12) Championship

We appreciate your patience and continued support of US Chess as we all work together to meet this challenge. We want our members to not only stay well but be informed every step of the way as it relates to US Chess. Please continue to check http://www.uschess.org regularly for other updates.

National Junior High (K-9) Championship has been Canceled – uschess.org

For the first time in the events 47-year history, US Chess is cancelling the National Junior High (K-9) Championship (NJH) due to the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the coronavirus (COVID-19) global pandemic. The City of Jacksonville, Florida is heeding the recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to avoid gatherings of more than 50 people for social or recreational purposes. As the NJH was expected to draw up to 1,300 players plus family, friends, and coaches, US Chess had no choice in this matter, plus we fully support governmental efforts intended to protect everyones health and well-being.

The event will not be rescheduled. The next NJH will be part of SuperNationals VII from May 7-9, 2021 at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center in Nashville, Tennessee. The 2020 National Elementary (K-6) Championships, scheduled for Nashville, Tennessee (May 8-10), is still currently planned to be held.

We know that for many scholastic players our spring nationals are an important part of their lives. Executive Director Carol Meyer says, I share the sense of loss felt by our players, families, and coaches who have been preparing for this event for months. However, we fully support the citys decision in light of new guidance from the Centers for Disease Control regarding gatherings of 50 or more people. We look forward to seeing our players again at the National K-12 Grade Championships in December and at the 2021 SuperNationals VII next spring.

US Chess will be providing full entry fee refunds to the almost 100 players that have already registered for the event. They will be processed automatically over the next few weeks; there is no need to contact US Chess about this. If you paid for a team room deposit, US Chess will refund the deposit.

Our goal is to have all refunds processed no later than April 8. If you are still awaiting a refund as of April 9, please email Debra Robison at [emailprotected]. US Chess appreciates your patience.

Hotel refund information: To cancel hotel reservations, call the reservation line at 904-588-1234. It will take 24-48 hours for the reservation department to become aware of the events cancellation, so wait until 3/18 at the earliest to call. The one-night deposit rule will be waived so you will receive a full refund.

US Chess will continue to work hard to bring you the national scholastic championships our community loves. Though the NJH event will no longer take place, we continue to focus on advancing our mission statement: Empower people, enrich lives, and enhance communities through chess.

2 Erode women not allowed to write chess arbiter exam in TN – MENAFN.COM

(MENAFN - IANS) By Venkatachari Jagannathan

Chennai, March 10 (IANS) On the International Women's Day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed over his social media accounts to seven women, the Tamil Nadu State Chess Association and its affiliate Erode District Chess Circle denied a mother and daughter to write the chess arbiter's examination.

A total of five persons from Erode including the two women were not allowed to write the arbiter's exam that was held on March 8 despite paying Rs 1,000 each as exam fees.

"I had been preparing for the arbiter exam for 15 days. I didn't expect the Secretary of Erode District Chess Circle not accepting the exam application and forwarding that to Tamil Nadu State Chess Association (TNSCA)," T.Kanmane, a former Erode district chess player told IANS.

Kanmane is a qualified teacher for mentally retarded teacher. She is working in a school for mentally retarded children.

As per the arbiter exam procedure, an aspirant should route his/her application through the district chess association. The Secretary of the District Chess Association has to give his nod/recommendation in the exam form so that a candidate can write the exam.

According to Kanmane, an email was sent to Tamil Nadu State Chess Association saying that the Secretary of its Erode district affiliate did not accept and forward the exam application, but of no avail.

Not only Kanmane, even the exam applications her mother T.Intherane and her father N. Thirugnanasampandam were not accepted by the Erode District Chess Circle.

"For the past several years we have been organising chess tournaments in Erode. This time we thought of writing the arbiter's exam and get ourselves qualified," Thirugnanasampandam told IANS.

"I used to play in 1980s and also used to lend a helping hand to tournament organisers as an unofficial arbiter. RecentlyA I came to know about arbiter exams and decided to write the same to become a qualified arbiter," S. Kalyanasundaram whose was not allowed to write the exam despite paying the fees told IANS.

For all the five persons former Secretary of the then Erode District Chess Association R. Nachimuthu acted as the coordinator on the exam matter.

"The five persons who are all members of Erode Mavatta Chaduranga Kazhagam had asked me to do the needful like submitting the application forms to the Erode District Chess Circle and other related work," Nachimuthu, Executive Committee Member of the Kazhagam told IANS.

He said the Erode District Chess Circle Secretary S.Ramesh did not accept the exam applications and was not reachable on phone.

Nachimuthu said as the exam date was nearing, he had sent the applications directly to Tamil Nadu State Chess Association, but he nor the applicants have not received any reply from the state chess body.

When contacted for his comments Ramesh, Secretary of Erode District Chess Circle told IANS: "These people had never lent a helping hand for the events organised by the official body. They also hold their own events. Will you allow a non-journalist into your journalist association?"

Tamil Nadu State Chess Association Secretary P. Stephen Balasamy was not available for comments when contacted by IANS.

It may be recalled last October, 11-year old school boy Karthick Rahul was arbitrarily evicted from The Hindu Tamil Nadu State Level Chess Tournament Tirunelveli Under-13 midway by the secretary of Tirunelveli District Chess Development Association (TDCDA) in Tamil Nadu for playing in tournament that was not affiliated to the district or state associations and AICF.

[Editors Note: Make that six! But I also added two new ones. The Senior Centers Matinee and Trottiers concert are now also indefinitely postponed. There are two events at the Library this Saturday that I initially missed that Im adding in. But, before heading to those or any other events, Id double check later this week that theyre still on.]

[Editors Note: Make that seven! But I also added one more new one. The Senior Centers Exciting Womens Club meeting is cancelled for March. Meanwhile, a new chess program launches this Friday at the Library.]

[Note: The highlights dont include ongoing weekly programs. For those listings and more, check the Event Calendar.]

Updated (3/9/2020 5:19 pm): I had listed Selectmens hours for the evening of March 10th. Ive been alerted that the date had been moved to next week, March 17th. As I posted in the Meetings of the Week, the Board of Selectmen has a meeting the evening of the 10th.

Updated (3/9/2020 5:29 pm): The Hands on Nature program was cancelled due to low attendance. The Library will try to re-book something later this spring.

Updated (3/9/2020 5:51 pm): I learned that the District has indefinitely postponed Family Math Night:

Due to the current COVID-19 virus status, the District is evaluating all non-essential events being hosted by the District. This evaluation will be done on a weekly basis or as new information evolves. As a result of the present evaluation, the District is postponing the Family Math Night scheduled for Thursday, March 12, 2020.

The safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community are our highest priority. If you have any questions, please reach out to the building principal or Mary Ellen Duggan, District Wellness Coordinator.

Updated (3/9/2020 6:04 pm): Also for fears around the Coronovirus, Putting for Patients is being postponed:

For anyone intending to attend the Jimmy Fund Putting for Patients event on March 14th at Algonquin Regional High School, sadly the event has been postponed to a not yet determined date. This is in order to minimize any possible risk with COVID-19. We hope to see you in the future to support this great cause!

Updated (3/10/2020 8:09 am): Trottier is postponing its chorus concert and the Senior Matinee for Knives Out is cancelled. Meanwhile, I had missed two events at the Library on Saturday: Reading with a dog and Learning to Knit.

Updated (3/10/20 2:07 pm): The Senior Centers website clarified that their current policy is to cancel programs with over 20 attendees and added Exciting Women to the list of cancelled programs.

CHESS COLUMN: The black knight of yore | Oklahoma | enidnews.com – Enid News & Eagle

Rooks can dominate a whole file (a, b, c etc.) or row (a2, b2, c2, etc.). This power applied to an enemy king that is cornered generates mating opportunities, just as having a boxer cornered on the ropes is an opening for a knock-out series of blows. With this hint in mind, please try to find the four ways to deliver checkmate in three or less moves in this weeks position.

The first one-two punch is throwing the bishop on f2 at e1. Blacks knight immediately threatens to hop to f2, mating white, as blacks g6 rook dominates the g file. From e1, blacks bishop blocks whites ability to defend against the black knights occupation of f2 the square the black knight occupies in almost all mating lines.

Alternatively, checking white with Re8 to e1 forces whites rook on d1 to capture blacks rook. Blacks bishop retakes and now again blocks the white rook from defending f2. The black knight does its thing on the next move (see next diagram).

Another forced mating line is black moves its bishop on f2 to g1. White guards f2 with rook to f1. Black now strikes with Re8 to e2 (see next diagram).

Black threatens checkmate with Re2 to h2, as blacks bishop defends its rook. By rook or by knight, white is checkmated on the next move.

The lesson this week is to look for ways for your rook(s) to dominate a file(s) near an enemy king. In this way, a black knight, as in medieval lore, may unsheathe a silver sword before the final blow from atop a field cleared by its rooks.
