Cloud computing in healthcare is growing fast in APAC here’s why – Tech Wire Asia

Leveraging cloud computing in the healthcare sector isnt all too surprising, given how cloud services have truly proliferated around the world over the past couple of years. In fact last month BDO released data from a 2021 global healthcare digital transformation survey conducted by independent research firm Rabin Research Company, that examined the pervasiveness of cloud in health services.
It was found that 93% of healthcare organizations globally have already adopted or are in the process of adopting a digital transformation strategy, with a healthy 78% already deploying cloud computing in operations, while another 20% intending to spend on its deployment.
Digital transformation in healthcare seemed unhurried during pre-pandemic times, but it was forced to accelerate due to the increasing demands of the global pandemic, pushing wider adoption and deployment of digitalized services such as remote patient care and monitoring.
Healthcare digitalization across APAC
In 2021, L.E.K Consulting reported that investment in digital infrastructure ranked amongst the top spending priorities for both private and public hospitals in APAC.Countries appear to be confident that digitalization will reduce medical errors and thus increase patient satisfaction.
Adoption of back-end digitalization, instead of patient-facing digitalization, was shown to be a major priority (over 80%) for budgets across the board.These include optimizing cloud computing and software for functions as diverse as patient administration and scheduling, billing, inter-provider data transfer capacities, as well as digital interaction tools with closely related fields such as pharma and medical technology (medtech).
Another study by Grand View Research anticipated that the Asia Pacific region will be the fastest-growing regional market between 2021 and 2028.This is due presumably to increased smartphone use, adoption of smart wearables, and a surge in demand for electronic medical records (EMRs).
In addition, the rising demand for remote patient monitoring and related services owing to increasing government spending on healthcare is anticipated to propel market growth.

H-Cloud is the first private cloud setup for the public sectorand will help reduce operational costs by an average of 55% by 2025. Additionally, it will also improve infrastructure availability to 99.95%.
H-Cloud uses an active-active configuration across two data centers to provide clinicians with the 24 by 7 uptime they needed, within a cost-effective and well-utilized pool of Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) resource, states the the website of the iHIS, the technology agency for the public healthcare sector in Singapore.
Over in Malaysia, the Malaysian Ministry of Health (KKM) has implemented initiatives such as the roll-out and upgrade of the Hospital Integrated System (HIS@KKM), and the cloud-enabled system for daily operations and real-time data management for primary healthcare at the KKM facilities in the country, known as the Integrated Primary Care System (TPC-OHCIS).
As we have learned from how hospital data breaches can have devastating impacts on not just the victims, but also the healthcare providers, the security offered by cloud computing is all the more crucial. As digitalization matures, edge computing will also be able to work alongside cloud computing to further optimize its efficiencies.

Customers agree. StarlingX is already being used by companies such as China Unicom, T-Systems and Verizon to deliver 5G services to customers in production. As Jonathan Bryce, the Open Infrastructure Foundation's CEO, said, Verizon supports 5G thanks to StarlingX's ultra-low latency, high availability and tier-one requirements.
The original codebase came from Intel and Wind River in 2018. Since then, it's done a lot of growing. While much of the work has been to make it the 5G delivery platform of choice, StarlingX is really good for any edge computing requirements that include high-speed interactions. So, it's not much of a surprise that it's also being picked up by IoT companies. In particular, it's providing a home in automation and factory IoT applications.
This latest version, StarlingX 5.0, includes numerous features to make it useful for those and other purposes. For example, it now supports'edgeworker' nodes. This enables you to customize nodes, which are deployed close to an edge device, such as an I/O device, a camera, a servo motor or a sensor. It's especially useful when you want a lightweight way to deploy a particular server operating system close to your devices. Say, for example, that even though you're using Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) for your main operating system, but you need to use Ubuntu Core for a containerized operating system for your security camera, with edgeworker, you just deploy Ubuntu Core to the appropriate nodes. No-fuss, no muss.
Thinking of those security cameras, StarlingX now supports Nvidia GPUs. This enables you to offload those workloads from the low-powered cameras to an edge node with Nvidia GPUs. You can, of course, also use these GPUs for machine learning as well in other applications.

StarlingX is also now capable of field-programmable gate array image update orchestration. Do you need to push a new firmware update to your IoT devices or StarlingX nodes? No problem. You can automatically update them and orchestrate the whole process by using Ansible DevOps. Now, this is handy!
Support for Precision Time Protocol may not sound that exciting, but, it's an important addition. Being able to keep devices in sync on time all the way from an office gadget to the StarlingX edge nodes to the servers is vital. Ask any system administrator, and they'll tell you. With this change, StarlingX can keep you up to date on your devices' PTP state and re-sync clocks if they gain or lose time.
Finally, to improve security, StarlingX has added a new major open-source program to its package: Vault. This HashiCorp open-source project lets you store, encrypt and access secrets, such as credentials, encryption keys and API tokens. Vault's features include dynamic secret generation, data encryption, leasing and renewal, revocation and audit/logging.
As StarlingX has matured it's gotten many more developers on board. As Paul Miller, Wind River's CTO, said "It's been exciting to see the tremendous increase in StarlingX community activity, not only in terms of commercial adoptions and evaluations but also with respect to investments in the project by many different organizations and individual contributors."
Speaking as someone who still keeps one foot in development consulting, I recommend StarlingX for anyone who's serious about edge computing. I really like that StarlingX gives you what you need to fully deploy an edge approach without having to build your own recipe for an edge computing solution.

What Is Fastly? How Outage at Cloud Computing Firm Brought Down the Internet – Newsweek
A global website crash that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning is widely reported to have been caused by issues at Fastly, an internet content delivery network used by many major websites.
Social media erupted with reports of websites, including Amazon, eBay, Reddit, and more, all being down after around 6:00 a.m. EDT.
Users who tried to access affected sites were met with a connection failure notice and an "Error 503" messagea generic error message signaling that the server cannot handle a connection request.
Fastly runs what it calls an "edge cloud," which is essentially a service that speeds up website loading times.
Soon after the website crash issues were reported the company said it was experiencing problems with its content delivery network, or CDNa group of servers spread around the world that work together to provide fast delivery of internet content.
They work by storing website information as physically close to individual internet users as possible, meaning people do not have to fetch data from the original serverwhich might be based on the other side of the planetevery time they access a site.
The majority of web traffic is directed through CDNs, including traffic for major platforms like Facebook and Amazon. A CDN does not actually host the website, but it does improve website performance.
Other providers of CDN services include Cloudflare, Amazon CloudFront, and StackPath.
Shortly after Fastly became aware of an issue with its CDN services it began issuing regular updates every few minutes and within an hour had identified the cause and implemented a fix.
A Fastly update, issued at 7:57 a.m. EDT, stated: "A fix was applied at 10:36 UTC (6:36 EDT). Customers may continue to experience decreased cache hit ratio and increased origin load as global services return."
It said the incident affected Asia/Pacific, South America, North America, South Africa, Europe, and India.
Fastly explained the cause further in a tweet, stating: "We identified a service configuration that triggered disruptions across our POPs globally and have disabled that configuration. Our global network is coming back online."
A POP stands for Point of Presence. It refers to an access point or physical location at which two or more networks or devices share a connection.
In the replies to the tweet some users praised Fastly for what they saw as a quick response.
Shares in Fastly (FSLY) are at time of writing priced at around $49.80 in pre-market trading, down 1.78 percent from Monday's close. The company is valued at around $5.8 billion.

GUANGZHOU, China Alibaba has launched a slew of new cloud computing products as the Chinese e-commerce giant looks to expand across Asia.
Cloud computing is seen as a key profit driver for Alibaba over the long term and in the past few years, it has been boosting its presence aggressively outside of China.
On Tuesday, Alibaba announced plans to open a new data center in the Philippines by the end of the year and launched a third data center in Indonesia. Expanding data centers allows cloud providers to boost their capacity in certain countries or regions.
Alibaba also launched a cloud-based livestreaming product designed for online shopping. It will allow e-commerce players to launch a live stream shopping feature on their websites or apps that are hosted on Alibaba's cloud.
Livestream shopping usually involves a host talking about products that customers can buy directly via the live broadcast. It has become very popular in China and is growing in other parts of Asia.
The Chinese e-commerce firm hopes that such a product can help it stand out from U.S. rivals including Microsoft and Amazon in the cloud market.
In the Asia-Pacific region, Alibaba was the biggest public cloud market vendor at the end of 2020 with a 19.2% share, according to IDC, boosted by success in China. Amazon was second with a 10.5% share.
However, in the global market, Alibaba still trails Microsoft, Amazon and Google.
