How cloud computing will serve as the foundation for business innovation – Gulf Business

For the last few years, cloud adoption has seen an upward trajectory in the Middle East, with many organisations moving data to the cloud. The region is undergoing an economic transformation, with many nations implementing smart city initiatives and updating their national visions while improving their digital economies. National visions in countries such as UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait encourage governments to use emerging technologies in order to achieve their transformation objectives.

Going by the numbers, Gartner forecasts end-user spending on public cloud services in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) to grow 19 per cent this year. A renewed focus on technology growth post-Covid-19 in the region is leading to continued growth in public cloud spending, said Colleen Graham, senior research director at Gartner, in a statement. Various MENA governments policies on telemedicine, usage of autonomous vehicles, smart cities, and a rapid move towards the next phase of the fourth industrial revolution are opening new growth avenues for public cloud in the region. Additionally, the attention given to building and nurturing talent will turn a new leaf in the regions shift towards becoming a digital economy.

Gartner also stated that in 2022, MENA chief information officers will spend the most on cloud application services, which include business intelligence applications, email and authoring, content services, customer experience and relationship management and supply chain. This segment will total $2.3bn, an increase of 16 per cent from 2021, and will account for 40 per cent of the total investment made in public cloud services.

The second largest segment will be cloud application and infrastructure services, which is forecast to total $1.1bn in 2022, an increase of 25.8 per cent from 2021. Cloud system infrastructure services will record the highest growth. This segment will grow 36.8 per cent to a total $895m in 2022. Dario Sarmiento, manager Service Delivery at Kyndryl Gulf and Levant, believes that disruptive technologies have been at the centre of the IT industry for decades. However, their adoption has recently increased at an accelerated pace, forcing businesses to work in and keep up with a very competitive environment.

In the last five years, we have seen how the convergence of cheaper network access, coupling with the development of better mobile and wireless technologies (peaking, for example, at the current promise of 5G speed for wireless communications) and improvements in the underlying virtualisation technologies, has created multiple options for enterprises to enhance their competitiveness. On the flip side, with all thats available today, some businesses are finding it challenging to prioritise IT initiatives based on their own strategic objectives. Cloud Computing is part of any of those relevant options, so a decision to move there cannot be disregarded, notes Sarmiento.

Are some companies reluctant to move to the cloud?As the world becomes technology-driven, cloud computing has become an integral part of daily life, especially for regional businesses. The cloud helps companies organise their data and keep a backup of every single piece of information used for product development and customer experience enhancement. However, many organisations are still putting off migrating their infrastructure to the cloud. Reason while some may lack IT personnel, others fear the loss of accessibility. Furthermore, the decision-makers focus on the cost. Meanwhile Fayez Eweidat, senior director META at Juniper Networks, observes security as one of the biggest concerns surrounding public cloud adoption. As more companies empower a work-from-anywhere workforce, access to cloud-based applications provides a seamless experience from home to office. However, some companies are hesitant to walk down this path due to concerns about how to transition their existing security, policies and frameworks and continue to meet their compliance commitments, he adds.

However, Sarmiento says it could be one or a combination of various reasons. We have seen organisations wanting to move to the cloud but are held back by the rigidity of their legacy systems. The reality is that the larger the organisations, the longer the legacy systems have been in place. Another stumbling block is the shortage of cloud skills, which can easily impede cloud transformation projects.

The risks of not moving to the cloudSo, what risks are associated with an organisation not moving to the cloud? With the cloud at the centre of all digital transformation journeys, businesses may not be able to capture more extensive opportunities, and they could face limitations on scalability, where the cost would be too high for them to grow because of traditional IT spending that utilises funds that the business could instead use for growth initiatives or innovation.

Not being part of the cloud community also reduces the intelligence of a business. By that, I mean that in todays corporate world, startups and SMEs need to have a smart approach to data. Business intelligence and data analytics need a good understanding of data collection and storage. Not having a robust cloud storage system supporting your business can, therefore, leave a negative impact on having to dig into your data, making your business less efficient, explains Candid Wuest, vice president Cyber Protection and Research at Acronis.

However, before investing in the cloud, organisations should consider how it aligns with their overall business strategy and understand which workloads are best suited to run on the cloud. In short, investing in the cloud must be aligned with developing strategic initiatives. Primarily, an organisation should consider security, compliance, hidden costs, networking, complexities and performance before investing in a cloud environment. Additionally, the preparedness of the team to manage not only the technical aspects of migration and ongoing operations but also the business considerations of optimising costs and assuring compliance are critical factors. Lastly, organisations must assess the technical readiness of any application before moving it to the cloud, comments Eweidat.

Cloud security Tools and best practices Although the cloud is constantly evolving, some best practices have remained firm for ensuring the security of cloud environments. Experts suggest that organisations with existing cloud solutions in place or looking to implement them should consider the advice below to ensure data security.

Emad Haffar, head of Technical Experts at Kaspersky, explains that basic antivirus and anti-malware protection are not enough to protect a cloud infrastructure. Industry best practices dictate that every operating system in the infrastructure needs comprehensive, multi-layered protection that safeguards various types of workloads running on different platforms. Understanding the difference between the cybersecurity responsibility of a cloud host and a cloud tenant is vital as well. In a private cloud setup, protecting the underlying virtualisation and storage as well as network connectivity, must be considered. And while this responsibility is on the shoulders of the provider in a public cloud setup, workload security is still needed, and it is on the tenant side. He adds that having a comprehensive security solution that can cater to all these different scenarios can make the task more manageable.

Meanwhile, Eweidat puts focus on zero trust on how security teams should redesign networks into secure micro perimeters, strengthen data security using obfuscation techniques, limit the risks associated with excessive user privileges and access, and dramatically improve security detection and response with analytics and automation. Organisations investing in security tools and architectures should ensure their investment focuses on managing and monitoring of cloud environments, actionable insights for faster threat detection, security behaviour and event-driven capabilities for real-time alerts.

3 Thematic ETFs for Investors to Bet on in Q4 – ETF Trends

On Monday, the S&P 500 Index notched a new closing low for 2022, presenting an attractive entry point for long-term investors.

Advisors can enhance a portfolio with an allocation to a thematic ETF focused on innovations within the technology sector. The pandemic has unveiled how technology can reimagine companies operations, with many people continuing to work from home, using technology in different ways, according to Todd Rosenbluth, head of research at VettaFi.

Thematic ETFs provide more targeted exposure than sector ETFs to potentially fast-growing long-term trends that have been accelerated since the initial emergence of COVID-19, Rosenbluth said.

DTEC is the least expensive on the list, charging just 50 basis points for its unique methodology. The fund has $115 million in assets under management.

The fund covers 10 different themes within the tech sector: healthcare innovation, the internet of things, clean energy and smart grid, cloud computing, data and analytics, fintech, robotics and AI, cybersecurity, 3D printing, and mobile payments, all with a focus on disruptive technologies and innovation.

DTEC selects 10 companies from each theme according to a proprietary model and equally weights each security, effectively giving each theme and each company equal representation. This methodology results in much more balanced exposure to the sector, which is notorious for being extremely concentrated in just a few mega-cap names.

Incepted in 2011, SKYY was the first ETF to offer exposure to the cloud computing industry, a narrow segment of the technology sector that involves a fast-growing application. SKYY has garnered $3 billion in assets under management and charges 60 basis points.

SKYY is one of the most targeted sector funds on the market, making it a tool for fine-tuning portfolio exposure. This ETF can be useful for making short-term tactical plays, but it could also have appeal as a minor complementary holding in a longer-term buy-and-hold portfolio.

In addition to investments in smaller, pure-play cloud computing companies, SKYY makes allocations to larger firms that are involved in the cloud computing space but derive the majority of their revenues from other operations. This feature may diminish the relationship between the growth of the cloud computing space and the performance of the cloud computing ETF.

BOTZ, which has $1.2 billion in assets under management, invests in an index of companies that stand to benefit from the increased adoption of automation, robotics, and artificial intelligence.

Part of the Global X suite of niche thematic ETFs, BOTZs top holdings includes Keyence Corp, ABB Ltd, and Fanuc Corporation. At 68 basis points, the BOTZ management fee is high for passive funds, but niche products arent designed to be core portfolio products for set-it-and-forget-it investors. Micro-sector funds are geared for medium-term tactical wagers of weeks or months, according to VettaFi.

SVG Sit-Down: NVIDIA’s Jamie Allan on the Transition to ST 2110, What’s Next for AI, AR, and the Cloud – Sports Video Group

At the IBC Show in Amsterdam this month, NVIDIAs tech infrastructure once again powered hundreds of booths. In addition, the company demonstrated SMPTE ST 2110 workflows at the Dell Technologies and RED Digital Cinema booths.

The next-generation IP broadcast workflow at the Dell booth focused on how to simplify the adoption of SMPTE ST 2110 standards for the broadcast industry. NVIDIA and Dell teamed up to showcase IP-based content-creation capabilities and deployment of AI in the broadcast pipeline from workstation to the edge.

At the RED booth, NVIDIA networking technologies (Rivermax, ConnectX, NVIDIA BlueField DPU, NVIDIA RTX GPU) enabled real-time 8K raw video over ST 2110. In this demo, NVIDIA and RED showcased a direct connection that allows cinema-quality RED V-RAPTOR 8K content to feed into an IP broadcast-production workflow.

Can you provide some detail on the key demonstrations youre participating in here at the show?At the Dell booth, we are showing how our existing Rivermax SDK which is already used by many leading broadcast organizations, such as Grass Valley and Disguise can create a new Windows application that provides a virtual display for a 2110 platform. You can take your normal Windows virtual or physical workstation and virtualize a SMPTE ST 2110-compliant desktop as a second display. You can simply drag an application to your second display and send that out to broadcast live on-air as a 2110-compliant stream.

On the RED Digital Cinema booth, we are enabling the worlds first real-time camera-to-SRT stream via uncompressed ST 2110. Weve worked with RED to develop the capability to go straight from one of their new camera models, fire an IP module into a processing unit doing uncompressed 8K 2110, and take that stream into either an uncompressed pipeline or an SRT compressed webstream at full 8K. We believe this is the first time that has ever been done.

How do you see AI and ML changing the way live sports are produced? And what role is NVIDIA playing in that evolution?The broadcast industry as a whole has adopted AI on a much larger scale, and weve seen many broadcasters using these tools over the past few years.

Organizations like EVS, Sony Hawkeye, and Vizrt are advancing their tools with AI. And many broadcast organizations and media companies are investing internally in AI data-science teams and developer teams to take some off-the-shelf AI tools that you can get from places like NVIDIAs GPU container cloud and retrain and adapt them to create specific tools for their needs.

That is very important in the sports industry because of the complexity and the unique needs of each individual sport. We work very closely with organizations like Hawkeye to enable their tools to work specifically for certain sports.

I also think AI and machine learning in automated production is very interesting. We are seeing organizations like Pixellot and Mediapros AutomaticTV growing at an astonishing rate. We will continue to work with these companies to create smaller and faster components for that part of the ecosystem so that technology can continue to grow.

There are also many startups focusing on creating groundbreaking applications for AI in sports broadcasting. One company in particular doing groundbreaking work in markerless motion tracking is move.AI. They are a UK-based company who have [drawn interest] from many major sporting bodies and broadcasters around the world. Using low-cost cameras, they can create full-body 3D visualizations, which is something every broadcaster wants in order to add value not only to their current 2D broadcast pipeline but also to their future immersive metaverse and Web3 broadcasting capabilities.

Speaking of the metaverse, how have you seen the use of augmented reality grow in recent years? How to you envision these virtual technologies impacting the industry?Were incredibly proud that nearly every vendor who creates augmented-reality and virtual-graphics tools leverages NVIDIA technology to build their products. We continue to push our engineers and our internal product teams to give them more and more capability in that space. The next step that we are hoping to see is bridging the gap between AR in the studio and AR in the home. Weve seen visionary pieces from amazing partners like BT Sport, who have done a huge amount of work with 5G Edge XR, which has been a big hit here at IBC.

In addition, companies like Brainstorm, Disguise, Vizrt, and Zero Density are striving towards this multi-layerrendering capability, where it should be easy to extrapolate an AR element and have it delivered by a different device than just your TV. Thats when we can start to talk about this multi-experience broadcast way of consuming content.

The vision of having a football match played out on your table from a top-down view is nearing reality. We want to see these technology companies getting there soon because the consumers are asking for it. There are certainly barriers to overcome on the scale of the computing power today and the limitations of traditional content-delivery networks. The next generation of augmented reality and high-fidelity visualization will need more edge computing to deliver those experiences. We hope to partner with the industry to leverage infrastructure that NVIDIA and our data-center partners have today to deliver those experiences to the consumer.

How has NVIDIA factored into the cloud-based revolution in the broadcast industry? How will this shift toward the edge and the cloud play out over the coming decade?The media industry has certainly been a huge adopter of cloud computing over the last decade, but I think many were primarily focused on reducing their capital expenditure. I think people are finally realizing the advantages of cloud-native computing. The industry is moving towards a software-defined broadcast ecosystem where every ISV or vendor or tool that you want to use can be run anywhere you want on whichever hardware platform you choose all with an enterprise IT management layer. Being able to build out those infrastructures from edge to private to public cloud is our goal in how we build out our technology.

When NVIDIA builds its core capabilities around containerization and virtualization of GPU and networking, we make them in a way that they can run anywhere. When our ISV or hardware partners want to deploy that tool at the edge, they know that they can trust that NVIDIAs drivers and virtualization technologies will work better. When they want to run those things in public cloud at massive scale, they know that the same core NVIDIA technologies that they use at the edge will run at scale in the cloud. We never want to create our core foundations in a way that lock you into deploying a certain place or a certain way. And thats how we believe the approach should be for the broadcast industry: build in a way that allows you to deploy on any platform in the future. This migration from a client-based system to software-defined virtualized infrastructure allows you to be a much more agile and flexible technology company.

There has been a lot of discourse this weekend about refocusing on technology within the broadcast industry. At the Sky Summit earlier this week, Sky CEO Dana Strong talked about how technology is at the beating heart of Skys entire organization. Every broadcast organization needs to adopt that philosophy. If you dont start building in this decentralized, software-defined manner, you will struggle to grow and expand in the direction that the industrys going to move in the next few years.

How Cloud Storage is Used by BMG, UConn Health, VBO Tickets, Sesame Workshop, Ankabut: Case Studies – Datamation

As companies face data storage challenges, many are looking to the cloud for help.

They do so partly to reduce on-premises server dependency and take advantage of cloud-based services and usage-based pricing models.

The five case studies below highlight how organizations in different industries are using cloud storage.

BMG is a Berlin-based music company handling recording and publishing for newer and well-established artists. The robust popularity of streaming services necessitated that BMG executives find an updated way to calculate royalty payments. Getting paid accurately means knowing when, where, and how someone heard a song. BMG provides a customized service for artists to help with this.

We make sure that everyone who uses our clients music knows who needs to be paid the associated royalties, then we collect these royalties and share them out quickly and transparently, explained Sebastian Hentzschel, chief information officer at BMG.

BMG offers a web portal and mobile app artists can use to see real-time royalties and collect payments. Gaurav Mittal, the vice president of group technology at BMG, discusses how much more difficult streaming can make royalty calculations.

One CD sale is equivalent to about 1,500 streamed songs or plays, said Mittal. That means IT departments have to process 1,500 times the amount of data to calculate payments for artists, and this makes scalable micropayment processing very important.

BMG used on-premises data storage until 2019, but leaders realized it was time to move to cloud computing to remain competitive.

With our on-premises infrastructure, we were going to hit a ceiling in a few years. We still managed to process royalty payments for our clients, but it was increasingly time-consuming and expensive, said Mittal. To keep focusing on our clients, rather than our infrastructure, we decided to migrate to Google Cloud.

Mittal said this cloud-computing project would finish ahead of schedule, and it already makes royalty-processing teams more productive. It can self-serve the necessary analytics without waiting for help from IT teams. This move also allows BMG to spend more time focused on helping artists.

Industry: Music

The UConn Health system has a teaching hospital and three schools, plus 5,000 employees and 3,000 medical researchers. Its easy to see how such a presence would cause leaders to consider cloud storage solutions. However, any cloud computing service on the shortlist must prioritize security. UConn Health aspires to transform laboratory insights into actions that cause positive clinical outcomes. Thus, people need the ability to retrieve and analyze large volumes of information on demand. The organization now has a hybrid cloud environment that allows the data storage of more than 3.2 petabytes (PB), 10,000 end-user devices, 850 virtual machines, 420 physical servers, and 430 applications.

With Commvault, we can reduce our reliance on physical servers and desktops, which means we can focus internal IT resources on supporting our researchers and customers, Catrini said.

Before working with that service provider, UConn Health used four disparate backup systems to protect against loss. However, it still relied on bare-metal data restores. In one instance, a server failure compromised months of research. The organization now has both security and flexibility from its data storage solutions.

Commvault gives us complete control of our corporate data and intellectual property, said Catrini. We can now move cloud workloads more easily between providers, which means we can take advantage of the best prices. This has reduced the cost per cloud server by around 20%.

Industry: Medicine and higher education

Ankabut is the largest education industry-focused information and communication technology provider in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Ankabuts leaders envisioned creating the best education-related cloud environment in the UAE. It did so with various solutions from Huawei, including a full-stack hybrid cloud. Since its establishment in 2012, VBO Tickets has experienced impressive success and sells approximately 2.5 million tickets annually. However, executives noticed room for improvement. Therefore, VBO Tickets sought the assistance of Mission Cloud Services to positively change its existing usage of cloud storage and computing products from Amazon Web Services (AWS).

We did not have the load-balancing capabilities we required to handle the spikes in online traffic that our clients sometimes experience, said David Boehme, co-founder and developer of the VBO Tickets software platform. We also wanted to make it easier to scale our cloud environment to accommodate the anticipated continuing growth.

Figuring out the best way forward wasnt easy.

We first considered hiring someone to manage our AWS architecture, but our strength is coding software, so thats where our focus must be. We knew we could optimize our coding output by relying on a third party that specializes in AWS to re-architect our cloud environment, said Boehme.

The hard work paid off and enabled VBO Tickets to open a new office in South Africa. It also began utilizing AWS in Germany to reach European customers.

One of the cloud storage changes was to move the ticketing database from a shared to a managed AWS Relational Database Services (RDS) database with Microsoft SQL to decouple shared resources and enhance overall performance. The Mission Cloud Services team also utilized AWS CloudTrail for logging purposes and AWS CloudWatch for infrastructure monitoring.

Thanks to Mission, we now have a high-functioning cloud hosting environment that can scale when necessary, Boehme explained. We can easily add more web servers and expand our database capacity. These capabilities are vital because the bigger we grow, the more prepared we need to be for events that can cause sudden increases in ticket-buying activity.

Industry: Event ticketing

The Sesame Workshop has several decades of history, reaching millions of kids worldwide to educate and entertain them. However, executives found their reliance on traditional IT infrastructure limited their ability to grow with its international audience.

The organization relied on two physical data centers at the time, each serving different purposes. However, that approach made server maintenance and other necessities challenging, especially due to the organizations lean workforce.

The organizations use of cloud computing proved so successful its next steps were to migrate its mail server and part of its data center to Microsoft Azure.

Moving to the cloud requires a mind shift for your internal teams, but for us, its not difficult because they see that it worked, said Kisten.
