PracticeEvolve announce Pathway to the Cloud allowing firms to level up – Today’s Conveyancer

PracticeEvolve Group incorporating SOS and Linetime, have announced a Pathway to the Cloud strategy available to all law firms globally, ultimately leading to a fully browser-based cloud solution called EvolveCloud.

The approach will see PracticeEvolve initially offer cloud hosting options for their existing SOS, Linetime and PracticeEvolve desktop applications, as a stepping stone to a fully native, browser-based, Cloud solution.

David Boland, Global CEO of PracticeEvolve Group, says uncompromising native Cloud software is fast becoming a realistic option for firms:

Our firms have become increasingly savvy in terms of technology, and that has accelerated during Covid. They are looking at the future and are now seeing how Cloud can empower them to adapt to evolving opportunities and work practices. Firms have recognised buying into a provider for the future is imperative to level up their own businesses and their expectation, now, is for native fully Cloud-based software.

Over the last three years, we have been optimising our existing technology for Cloud, while at the same time developing a completely new native Cloud solution that will shape how law firms think when selecting software for the future, this is what we call pathway to the Cloud

David highlights how firms have already identified the need to be better connected:

Suggesting the events of the last year have led to heightened demand is somewhat disingenuous to firms, in my opinion. Firms were already considering how the world was changing before 2020. They have already identified how they need to be better connected with clients, with their staff and with software.

David continues to outline the approach will be stepped in line with worldwide technology developments which are already driving demand:

This is especially true when we consider the impact global developments such as 5G will have on us all. 5G is expected to relieve businesses of the financial burden of deployment and maintenance of hardware-based infrastructure by shifting to a Cloud environment. In parallel, we are seeing a growing workforce who have grown up using apps and browsers, and they expect flexibility in the software and the ability to work whenever and wherever they are.

As a legal technology provider, we are taking responsibility to deliver native Cloud software and apps to deliver on those needs for the future of law firms. But in parallel were ensuring that our products created prior to mainstream adoption of Cloud are fully optimised to take advantage of what Cloud has to offer, particularly location independence and mobility.

Matt Fiske-Jackson, head of Cloud Sales at PracticeEvolve adds:

As is my role, Im constantly talking with firms who have made it clear a Cloud solution is needed. Often, practice management systems are the last software requiring a server and I am seeing the fast-growing demands of firms wanting to take steps into the Cloud. Of course, we will continue to develop the roadmap for our desktop applications across SOS, Linetime and PracticeEvolve but our native, fully Cloud based solution EvolveCloud will be in high demand from firms of all sizes because we have designed the solution for the Cloud rather than adapting it for the Cloud.

How to build a CI/CD pipeline with Azure and GitHub – TechTarget

Continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines are the foundation of modern software development, delivering business value in many ways: streamlined releases, software with fewer bugs and automation that removes many time-consuming and error-prone manual steps. You can develop software without CI/CD, but a CI/CD pipeline makes life much easier if your business uses Agile, cloud-native apps or any distributed application architectures such as microservices.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to building a CI/CD pipeline. A typical CI/CD pipeline example relies on some prescriptive components -- a CI engine, code repository, test framework -- but an organization's CI/CD plan will likely branch out, depending on its infrastructure and tools and the choice between continuous delivery or deployment. Organizations that rely on cloud-based applications and services may want to run CI/CD through their chosen cloud platform.

Most cloud providers offer a template to quickly set up a CI/CD pipeline. Consider, for example, a CI/CD pipeline that uses GitHub and deploys an application to Microsoft Azure. A service called DevOps Starter provides CI/CD starter templates that enable you to integrate with either GitHub or Azure DevOps and bootstrap a repository with a demo application from source code along with the pipeline definition as code and infrastructure as code (Azure Resource Manager templates). With these in place, the service stitches everything together to present an end-to-end deployment pipeline.

So, let's get started with this step-by-step walkthrough of how to set up a CI/CD pipeline in Azure with GitHub for version control and repository. First, go to the Azure portal, search for devops and select the "DevOps Starter" service.

In the DevOps Starter service pane, click Add which presents a bunch of preloaded templates to choose from. Select the programming language for your application -- in this example, I chose .NET, as well as GitHub for version control and GitHub Actions for pipelines (Azure DevOps is an option as well). Hit the Next: Framework button.

Now, choose the ASP.NET Core framework for our .NET app, as this is a cross-platform framework; later, we can deploy our application on top of Linux containers. Then click Next: Service.

You can select from several Azure services to deploy your application. For this exercise, we will choose Web App for containers, which deploys containers to an Azure App Service, a managed application-hosting platform. Click Next: Create.

Because we chose GitHub for version control and pipelines, the next step will prompt us to authorize connection to GitHub in the Azure portal. Click Authorize and log into GitHub.

Once we have authorized to GitHub, we are presented with several parameters (the final three are specific to deployment on Azure):

Fill in the details and click Review + Create.

After the deployment completes, we can return to the DevOps Service and see that our instance has been created.

Clicking on the instance presents a landing page with the details of the GitHub workflow and corresponding Azure resources.

We confirm the Azure starter service has created a GitHub repository under our specified organization, and it has set up a GitHub Actions CI/CD pipeline to build, test and release our software. Here's the repository layout:

The image below shows the CI/CD task as it runs through GitHub Actions.

Let's dive deeper to understand what's happening inside a single CI/CD build in our example and its three stages.

This job runs a series of steps to build the application:

The primary responsibility in this stage is to take the artifact (the container image from previous job) and deploy it in the environment on the cloud provider, with the required cloud resources, to host the app instance. Specific functions include:

This job runs various functional tests to validate our deployed app is working. Steps include:

This example of a CI/CD pipeline in Azure with GitHub involves only a single environment, but you could chain multiple environments together, with gates on them to control the release of deployed software.

ZOL to stop providing email and Webhosting services directly, customers to be migrated to Microsoft 365 at start of July – Technology Zimbabwe

ZOL customers who log into its MyZOL platform are being greeted with a dismissible notice telling them that ZOL will stop providing Web and Email services directly to them starting 02 July 2021. Their email and backup services will instead be migrated to the Microsoft platform effective from this date. Affected customers are being asked to contact support.

This is truly the end of an era where ISPs didnt just provide you with access to the internet but also provided some services including email and web hosting themselves. It means the cloud has won. Everything is going back to the cloud just like in the beginning when screens were just dumb terminals connected to mainframes.

I have had an on and off (mostly on) relationship with ZOL starting around 2007 when a friend and I teamed up to sign up for what was then known as a ZimSurfer account. This was during the first economic meltdown which people often refer to colloquially as 2008 and just like now we had lying politicians and government authorities in charge who claimed everything was going well when it wasnt.

We accidentally discovered for example that Zimbabwes TelOne gateway to the internet was being occasionally switched off. Yes, at one point creditors literary switched off Zimbabwes access to the internet due to debts. We only discovered this after complaining to ZOL that we couldnt access Google. Thats when we upgraded our dial-up account, with the help of the company that I was interning for, and he and I got shiny new @zol.co.zw Webmail as a perk. We also registered a .co.zw domain for company emails. Again that was a thing.

The advantage of getting email straight from your IP was that it tended to be faster as opposed to say getting it from Gmail. We had a 26kbps dial-up connection on an analogue phone line-loading the Gmail interface was a struggle. I was already a proficient Linux user and when people complained about slow email I came up with a pretty slick email setup:

Yes at one point Econet had their own email service which was yournumber@econet.com or something like that. We also used the same email set up when Econet finally launched GPRS and for $25 you could have blitzing speeds of 128kbps which was unlimited. Exciting times.

In a FAQ section provided on the migration notice ZOL says they have been using a legacy LinuxSci platform to cater for their customers needs and it seems it has become a pain to maintain and ensure availability. I can relate too. I used to be an advocate of hosting my own email but at some point, I just gave up. For US$2/per user per month my cloud services provider can provide a better service that doesnt have me tearing my hair every now and then when the services go down.

They are doing this for the same reason businesses stopped having on premise email servers. Yes, at some point it was pretty standard to host your own email services within your premises. Having worked as a young boy to maintain such a system, I can confirm its not worth it. Most IT departments tend to be understaffed as they are not a core business. This means that you have to stop helping people plugin back their mouses ( or is it mice?) and keyboards and run to the server room to fix email issues.

SMEs simply signed up for services like ZOL mail instead. ZOL would handle that headache for them and it seems even ZOL has had enough headaches and want Microsoft to handle the issue. This means that you will be paying ZOL to pay Microsoft to provide you with email. Users can choose between the following plans:

It also doesnt seem like this will be an automated process or maybe it is, there are questions there. While ZOL seems to imply the migrations will be done by 02 July the FAQ section says those who want to migrate have to get in touch with support. If you are affected I think its best you get in touch with ZOL as soon as possible to get clarification.

One question you may have is why Microsoft and not Google Workspace? Personally, I have always preferred Googles cloud offerings compared to Microsoft but the thing is a lot of businesses already rely heavily on Microsoft products and Liquid Intelligent Technologies being partners with Microsoft may have influenced the decision.

Its not clear whether you have to option to choose your own email provider or not. It should be easy to do that though as all you will need to do is sign up with your preferred provider and ask ZOL to updated your MX records on their end. Another thing thats not clear is how much the service will cost you per month or if you can pay using ZWL which the government says is being accepted internationally.

Multicluster Management with Kubernetes and Istio The New Stack – thenewstack.io

Do you have multiple Kubernetes clusters and a service mesh? Do your virtual machines and services in a Kubernetes cluster need to interact? This article will take you through the process and considerations of building a hybrid cloud using Kubernetes and an Istio Service Mesh. Together, Kubernetes and Istio can be used to bring hybrid workloads into a mesh and achieve interoperability for multicluster. But another layer of infrastructure a management plane is helpful for managing multicluster or multimesh deployments.

Jimmy Song

Jimmy is a developer advocate at Tetrate, CNCF Ambassador, co-founder of ServiceMesher, and Cloud Native Community(China). He mainly focuses on Kubernetes, Istio, and cloud native architectures.

Using Kubernetes enables rapid deployment of a distributed environment that enables cloud interoperability and unifies the control plane on the cloud. It also provides resource objects, such as Service, Ingress and Gateway, to handle application traffic. The Kubernetes API Server communicates with the kube-proxy component on each node in the cluster, creates iptables rules for the node, and forwards requests to other pods.

Assuming that a client now wants to access a service in Kubernetes, the request is first sent to the Ingress/Gateway, then forwarded to the backend service (Service A in the diagram below) based on the routing configuration in the Ingress/Gateway. Then Service A polls an instance of Service B for the traffic requested by Service B. Lastly, the traffic requested by Service A for Service B is polled forward to Service Bs instance.

The most common usage scenarios for multicluster management include:

There are often multiple Kubernetes clusters within an enterprise; and the KubeFed implementation of Kubernetes cluster federation developed by Multicluster SIG enables multicluster management capabilities, which allows all Kubernetes clusters to be managed through the same interface.

There are several general issues that need to be addressed when using cluster federation:

The following is a multicluster architecture for KubeSphere one of the most commonly used Kubernetes multicluster management architectures where the Host Cluster serves as the control plane with two member clusters, West and East.

The Host Cluster needs to be able to access the API Server of the Member Cluster, but the network connectivity between Member Clusters is not required. The Host Cluster is independent of the Member Cluster it manages and the Member Cluster is not aware of the existence of the Host Cluster. The advantage of this is that when the control plane fails, the Member Cluster will not be affected and the deployed load can still operate normally without being affected.

The Host Cluster also assumes the role of API portal, and the Host Cluster forwards the resource requests to the Member Cluster which is convenient for aggregation and also facilitates unified authority authentication. We see that there is a Federation Control Plane in the Host Cluster, where the Push Reconciler propagates the identity, role, and role binding from the Federation Cluster to all Member Clusters.

Consider using the Istio service mesh when we have multilingual, multiversion microservices running in Kubernetes and need finer-grained canary publishing and unified security policy management for inter-service observability. Istio enables intelligent application-aware load balancing from the application layer to other Service Mesh-enabled services in the cluster, by transparently intercepting all traffic to and from the application using IPTables, and bypassing the primary kube-proxy load balancing. The Istio control plane communicates with the Kubernetes API Server to obtain information about all registered services in the cluster.

The following diagram illustrates the basics of Istio, where all nodes belong to the same Kubernetes cluster.

You may end up with at least a few Kubernetes clusters, each hosting microservices. Multiple deployment models exist for Istios multicluster deployments depending on network isolation, primary and backup which can be specified by declaration when deploying using Istio Operator. Communication between these microservices in a cluster can be enhanced by a service mesh. Within the cluster, Istio provides common communication patterns to improve resiliency, security and observability.

All of the above is about application load management on Kubernetes, but for legacy applications on virtual machines: how can they be managed in the same plane? Istio supports applications on virtual machines, so why do we need a management plane?

To manage gateways, traffic and security groupings, and apply them to different clusters and namespaces, youll need to add another layer of abstraction on top of Istio: a management plane. The diagram below shows the multitenant model of Tetrate Service Bridge (TSB). TSB uses Next Generation Access Control (NGAC) a fine-grained authorization framework to manage user access and also facilitate the construction of a zero-trust network.

Istio provides workload identification, protected by strong mTLS encryption. This zero-trust model is better than trusting workloads based on topology information, such as source IP. A common control plane for multicluster management is built on top of Istio. Then a management plane is added to manage multiple clusters providing multitenancy, management configuration, observability, and more.

The diagram below shows the architecture of Tetrate Service Bridge.

Interoperability of heterogeneous clusters is achieved with Kubernetes. Istio brings containerized and virtual machine loads into a single control plane, to unify traffic, security and observability within the clusters. However, as the number of clusters, network environments and user permissions become more complex, there is a need to build another management plane above Istios control plane (for example, Tetrate Service Bridge) for hybrid cloud management.
