8 Valuable Tips for Securing your Data on the Cloud in 2020 – DC Velocity

Cloud computing is ubiquitous. Organizations far and wide are adopting the cloud in order to leverage its efficiency and scalability benefits. However advantageous the cloud may be, it always comes with a downside: security. As more and more applications continue to be deployed on the cloud, securing the cloud becomes even more challenging. In a cloud service, the task of maintenance falls entirely upon your cloud hosting service provider. While this frees you from spending time and energy on routine work, it doesnt allow you any control over server configuration and upgrades. This doesnt augur well for the security of your business, especially if your cloud server hosting provider has lax security controls in place. In this blog, we will discuss some tips that can help secure your data on the cloud. So, let us begin.1) Ensure End-to-end Data EncryptionIn order to safeguard your data from breaches and malware attacks, its vital that you have a robust encryption solution in place. Many cloud hosting service providers encrypt your data automatically when in transit. There is, however, no guarantee that the data will be secure once it is stored on your cloud server. If a third-party encrypts the server data on your behalf, you stand to lose the data if this third-party gets compromised in some way or the other. Having end-to-end data encryption is, therefore, essential. Choose a cloud service that helps you design a fool-proof encryption system.2) Create Local Back-up of your DataCloud service providers typically create a backup of your data automatically. This creates a false sense of security for cloud users. They believe theres no need to save the data locally. Hackers understand that many organizations dont store data locally. This allows them to launch a ransomware attack easily wherein they pressurize the owner to submit large sums of money to get their data back. Creating local copies of your data helps avoid such undesirable scenarios. Local backup lets you access your data when the original gets lost or corrupted for some reason or the other. For local backup, you can either create an additional cloud storage account or use an external physical storage device such as a hard disc. With a physical storage device, you can access information even when you have poor or no internet connection. 3) Have Strong Passwords in PlaceAs per a recent study, close to 90% of all passwords can be cracked within seconds. So, you have to make sure your password can stand a hacking attempt. Here are some tips for creating a great password for your cloud service:Use a combination of letters, numbers and special characters in your password.Keep away from passwords that are easy to guess such as 123456, qwerty123, password123. Do not use your name or other identifiable information (city of residence, employers name) in the password.Change your passwords frequently and do not repeat old passwords. Have separate passwords for all your cloud accounts. If your cloud hosting provider offers two-step verification for login, go for it.

4) Establish Role-based Access Management

As a cloud user, you may face threat from anywhere. In addition to malicious outsiders, disgruntled employees may steal your confidential information or negligent personnel can accidentally leaking sensitive data stored on the cloud. Role-based access control comes in handy here.

With role-based access management, you can define and control which files individual users can open, edit and copy. You can assign roles and privileges to users depending on their need, authority and position within the organization.

5) Read User Agreement Carefully

Read the terms and conditions of a cloud service provider carefully before signing up for their service. This will tell you how they will protect your information and whether you permit them to use or sell your information in any manner by signing up.

Make sure you fully understand each and every clause in your agreement before purchasing the service. Failing to do so can affect the security of your data.

6) Avoid Storing Sensitive Information

Avoid storing sensitive information on the cloud. This could be anything ranging from your personal data to copies of your IDs, bank statements or credit card numbers that anyone can exploit to their advantage. Keep only those files on the cloud that you need to access frequently and make sure you encrypt them before uploading. 7) Use Strong Anti-Malware

A cloud service transfers data over the internet. So, it is important to have robust anti-malware protection on all your devices: desktops, laptops, mobiles or tablets. Such software helps you block malicious URLs and downloads. You can also opt for additional services such as remote wipe and backups.

8) Exercise Caution when Working Online

Be wary of what you do when you are online particularly when using public computers and connections. When using a public computer, dont save your passwords and make sure you have logged out of your account after you are done. By doing so, you avoid the risk of strangers accessing your data.

In addition, avoid using unsecured Wi-Fi hotspots in public places. Such connections are usually unencrypted. So, your activity can be tracked by a cybercriminal present on the same network who can login into your cloud account and steal precious data.

So, these are some tips you can implement to secure your data on the cloud. If you are looking for a secure cloud server hosting or storage solution, connect with our experts at Go4hosting on sales@go4hosting.com or 0120-627-7777.

Public Cloud: The Indispensable Component for Businesses – HostReview.com

Every public Cloud has some essential features like- a scalable architecture, offering a pay-per-consumption model, instant reach to the masses, and diversified component options. Usually, the migration-driven journey often depicts a standard architectural structure. Cloud can transform a basic prototype into reality, automate key processes, and enhance customer experiences through real-time engagements containing in-depth insights. All these are only possible when the desired 'outcomes' have been seen as a key deliverable of the customer transformation journey.

Digital Transformation (DX), when implemented correctly, can drive the enhanced customer experience by elevating it from static platforms to dynamic user demands, with room for innovations. Today, various leading technology companies serve as the Digital Transformation Enabler for other organizations by offering a unique and customized set of services and offerings. All the technology giant organizations have expertise in data science and Big Data, which is used to extract quality information to enhance customer experience levels. These DX-enabler companies have altered the existing user ecosystem that supports the underlying value chain.

The opportunity for building a cloud-based architecture helps in facilitating not just basic technology. It also supports a broader range of assessments for users, processes, and interactions that make them different by drawing benefits across the entire service lifecycle. Teams across a value chain can 'interact' with various Cloud services at different service lifecycle stages.

The effective utilization of Cloud technology accepts that various aiding technologies must align with automation and efficiency right from the core. Some ill alignment instances include aspects related to human-intervened approvals, defining virtual machines' budgets for an automated landscape.

This new arena of platform-based components has already started offering infinite scope since most of the leading Cloud service providers now function on multiple individual cloud parts. Thus, it is now becoming inevitably important that these functionalities are effectively planned for the desired output. Most of the older Cloud-based platforms are now headed towards older data centers on a physical level.

With public Cloud hosting, several tenants share the physical hardware. This makes it easier for the tenants to divide the infrastructure costs amongst various users. Most of the public Cloud providers offer their hosting on a pay-per-consumption, allowing the users to pay only for the consumed resources such as RAM, Memory Space, etc. With services being used regularly, it becomes easier for SMBs to leverage public Cloud services.

Other value-added benefits that businesses get by leveraging public Cloud hosting include

Public Cloud offers an extremely flexible billing structure. Most of the service providers are now offering Cloud hosting services on a pay-per-consumption basis, where the user is charged only for the utilized resources. The pay-per-consumption billing model helps in reducing additional overheads and such models can be extremely beneficial for small businesses, who are very stringent on their costs.

Public Cloud can be easily setup in real-quick time. It can be accessed over the Internet and even deployed & configured in remote locations. The Cloud provider's IT team can easily configure the Public Cloud remotely for the client using an active Internet connection.

By availing the services of a Public Cloud provider, one doesn't need to worry about the maintenance of software, hardware, along with networks. Public Cloud providers also eliminate the need to maintain the infrastructure and concerns related to security and upgrades. Public Cloud hosting also allows businesses to manage the infrastructure with bare minimum staff and reduce overall operating costs.

Today, every business demands to be quicker and dynamic in order to remain efficiently productive. To stay productive, businesses must constantly evolve and enhance their existing processes, tools, and techniques. By being agile, companies can take faster decisions resulting in improved customer satisfaction levels. Through the public Cloud, businesses get simpler operations, better delivery, and faster launch of new business programs and services.

Most of the public Cloud hosting providers ensure a 99% Uptime, along with any chances of failure. As the entire Cloud system is connected through multiple servers, another server's server failure instances can be overlooked. This results in a smooth and continuous performance for major business-critical applications.

Concluding Words

Cloud has been in the technological space for some quite significant time now. It offers numerous benefits to businesses ensuring smoother business operations and increased focus on critical operational areas. Talking in particular about public Cloud hosting, it is shared by multiple tenants present on the server, which allows everyone to bear the hosting costs.

Google Cloud and OVHcloud team up for European ‘trusted cloud solution’ partnership – Cloud Tech

Google Cloud and OVHcloud have announced a strategic partnership to help European organisations with cloud data security as issues around data sovereignty and privacy rumble on.

The two companies intend to build joint solutions that empower customers to draw all the benefits of a multi-cloud and open approach, as well as drive a critical ecosystem of third-party developers, in their own words. In practice, OVHcloud will launch a new hosted private cloud offering by utilising Anthos, Googles application modernisation platform.

The key to this offering lays in its residency. Google Cloud technology will be part of dedicated infrastructure, fully operated and managed in Europe by OVHcloud teams in what CEO Thomas Kurian described as the first of its kind. Listening to our customers, partners and policymakers in Europe, we understand their need for even greater control and autonomy, Kurian added in a statement.

This is potentially important for those who have been watching various moves made with regards to data privacy over the past few months.

In August, CloudTech reported on the ending of the Privacy Shield agreement around EU-US data transfer. The legal challenge was based around the argument that security laws in the US were inadequate in safeguarding EU citizens from surveillance although industry analysts argued at the time that a change in US administration could alter the landscape.

Privacy advocates therefore argued that, with this route to data transfer blocked, US-headquartered cloud companies, falling under the mantle of electronic communication service providers, had a serious issue on their hands.

For cloud providers in Europe, not beholden to this legislation, or the US-based CLOUD Act, an opportunity has been sensed. Alongside OVHcloud, companies with heritage in hosting, such as GMX and 1&1, have also gone on record over this issue.

OVHcloud said in August that the company had built [its] governance and organisation so as not to be impacted by extra-territorial data sharing. While OVHcloud has customers in the US alone and in transatlantic regions, the company is confident it does not fall foul of any legislation.

There are other initiatives at hand, such as Gaia-X, which is looking to create a trusted public cloud offering for Germany, France, and other European markets. OVHcloud is also part of this, announcing a cooperation with Deutsche Telekom in September.

We are proud to partner with Google Cloud to jointly deliver innovative solutions that will meet Europes growing requirements for data sovereignty, said Michel Paulin, CEO at OVHcloud in a statement. This is a significant step forward to create new value for the European market.

An OVHcloud spokesperson further said the move will complement OVHclouds portfolio to address the needs for best of breed technologies in a trusted framework. We believe it will be well adapted to suit big companies and organisations for which data privacy and control are key, the spokesperson added.

The company declined to comment when asked by CloudTech if there were plans for similar deals with other hyperscalers in the pipeline, while adding when asked about who initiated the partnership that it was not at liberty to disclose this information.

Microsoft: New VS Code update is out plus here’s what GitHub Codespaces will cost – ZDNet

Microsoft has released a new update of its Visual Studio Code (VS Code) code editor for Windows, Windows on Arm, macOS and Linux.

The latest update brings VS Code to version 1.51, which contains fixes for "housekeeping GitHub issues" that have emerged since GitHub Codespaces was released.

Microsoft in September aired its plans to kill off Visual Studio Codespaces the rebranded version of Visual Studio Online and merge it with GitHub's take on the online code-editing service, GitHub Codespaces.

Microsoft opted to consolidate Visual Studio Codespaces with GitHub Codespaces to "eliminate confusion, simplify the experience for everyone, and make more rapid progress to address customer feedback".

Visual Studio Codespaces users have until February 2021 to move to GitHub Codespaces. After that, the Visual Studio Codespaces offering on Azure will end.

The VS Code team said it has "worked with our partners at GitHub on GitHub Codespaces, which ended up being more involved than originally anticipated".

The team says it will continue working on GitHub housekeeping for part of the November iteration of VS Code.

Microsoft unveiled GitHub Codespaces in May, offering developers a cloud-hosted development environment that launches quickly inside GitHub so that developers can start contributing to projects immediately.

It offers developers a containerized, browser-based version of the VS Code editor, but developers can also opt to use their desktop IDEs instead to start a codespace in GitHub and connect to it from their desktops via VS Code.

Codespaces in GitHub supports VS Code's code completion and navigation, extensions, and terminal access.

GitHub Codespaces is still in a limited public beta. It's described as an "integrated development environment (IDE) on GitHub". During the beta phase, GitHub Codespaces is free to use. However, when it becomes generally available, users will be billed for storage and compute resources.

GitHub has now listed pricing details that will apply when GitHub Codespaces reaches general availability.

The 'basic' Linux package with two CPU cores, 4GB of RAM, and 32GB of SSD storage costs $0.085 per hour. The 'standard' option with four CPU cores, 8GB of RAM, 32GB of SSD costs $0.169 per hour, whole the 'premium' option with eight CPU cores, 16GB of RAM, 32GB of SSD costs $0.339 per hour.

Additionally, each codespace incurs monthly storage costs until users delete the codespace. Storage costs for all instance types are $0.10 per GB per month.

The proposed pricing is consistent with the recently discounted prices of instances for Visual Studio Codespaces in Azure, which was basically halved.

Besides GitHub housekeeping, Microsoft has introduced more prominent pinned tabs for the VS Code workbench, a custom hover for extension trees, and the ability to install a VS Code extension without synchronizing it while settings sync is enabled.

Users can also now move the cursor while suggestions are showing, allowing users to trigger suggestions at the end of a word, move left to see more suggestions, and then use replace to overwrite the word.
