From Paper to Digital the Benefits of Cloud and SaaS Platforms for Lab Productivity – Technology Networks
As the pharmaceutical industry continues to face new challenges such as increased competition and new technological demands, their laboratories across the globe are looking for innovative ways to manage ever-increasing amount of data. Data collected from experiments is the most valuable information that research laboratories can hold, however many still rely on paper-based notebooks to record protocols and experiments, keep track of results and log data analysis. However, the volume of data being produced by laboratories can make this process very labor intensive, limiting internal efficiencies as well as cross-site collaboration and communication. Digital solutions, such as electronic laboratory notebooks (ELN), supplemented with other solutions such as scientific data management systems (SDMS) and laboratory execution systems (LES), allow laboratories to consolidate and integrate data across an organization. In recent years, informatics vendors have begun to offer ELNs as an outsourced service in the cloud, providing organizations with automated data collection and management processes, which in turn facilitates flexible collaboration, as well as other potential benefits. Regardless of size, location, and purpose, it is crucial that the data is collated and stored in a manner that keeps it secure, but also allows it to be used efficiently. Can cloud-assisted ELNs rise to the challenge?
Laboratories across the globe are all challenged with similar barriers to productivity such as outdated informatics tools and inefficient workflows. Implementations, upgrades and integrations of on-premise systems can be time-consuming, and result in in-house IT personnel having little time to work on new ideas. Written observations in paper-based notebooks are often transcribed incorrectly, and tests and experiments are frequently repeated due to previous data being lost or inaccessible. This challenge is further compounded by budget constraints which see laboratories running with the same level of demand, but with fewer human resources. The lack of a central data access point is a significant challenge facing research and development (R&D) productivity. A central point of access allows researchers to clarify where team members should store and find data. When laboratory staff must rely on several different data distribution methods, productivity is significantly slowed. Hours are then lost due to poor data collection and reporting systems.
Digital platforms, such as a software-as-a-service (SaaS) ELN, can create a reliable and repeatable process for disseminating data, as well as improving data searches, by hosting all files in one location. More intuitive technology solutions can also reduce user frustration and ultimately increase job satisfaction, which leads to productivity improvements.
The time saved on administrative tasks by implementing an ELN system enables researchers to reach milestones faster while saving money. However, many ELNs are hosted locally which poses a problem for those that operate across multiple sites and, often, multiple countries, resulting in an array of data being generated that sits in separate silos. Data formats and applications are also frequently inconsistent, making it hard for laboratory members to store all their work in one place, and for managers to oversee it. ELNs go some way to alleviate these challenges, but the issue is further complicated when lab managers and directors are required to manage multiple teams, often in different places.Nevertheless, the potential rewards are substantial. An organization using an advanced laboratory technology such as a cloud ELN in real time can take advantage of a seamless data workflow. Laboratory technicians can document data, team leaders review it and project managers can oversee activity and relate it to timelines and budgets, no matter where in the world they are. Links can be placed digitally between projects, and experiments and metadata attached, making searches faster and simpler. All this enables smoother feedback and keeps discussions within the context of individual experiments.
Cloud-based ELNs also facilitate improved collaboration between laboratories in global organizations, allowing data and workflow access from wherever you have an internet connection. For example, one team member can order reagents for an experiment and link them to a protocol. Users can see where an item was used across a list of experiments, making it easier to find data, troubleshoot any issues and establish the suitability of entities for different experimental tasks. The provider can also offer better traceability of data and procedures taken during experiments, meaning the cause of failed experiments can be tracked, ultimately reducing the number of these fails and enhancing laboratory output.
Time and cost savings are two of the key reasons for organizations transitioning from paper-based laboratory processes to cloud-based digital systems. Automatic sample review eliminates the need to manually check all information, as a central laboratory can use the online interface to register and enter samples, specify tests, and check this has all been performed correctly.Quantity of data is another hurdle that cloud-based laboratory management solutions are designed to overcome. Many analytical techniques, such as flow cytometry, generate a vast number of large raw data files, which often need to be retained and integrated in the documented experiment, to ensure a companys availability for spot checks. Incorporating this data into a cloud-based ELN frees up user space by moving data into the cloud and makes it available as required.
An unalterable audit trail is critical to address data integrity concerns, both from a regulatory and product quality perspective. The Code of Federal Regulations Title 21 (21 CFR) Part 11 compliance stipulates experiment audit trails and digital signatures as a baseline requirement for cloud based ELN systems [1]. For clinical data storage and management, ELN systems that are HIPAA-compliant may be required. Cloud-based ELNs ensure that time and date stamping for regulatory and intellectual property tracking is straightforward, due to the simplicity of tracking ownership of experiments and determining which team member inputted certain data.
In order to keep up with their competitors, labs need a user-friendly informatics system where individuals can store large amounts of data in a structured manner while maintaining regulatory compliance. Technology providers have responded to this need by developing solutions such as cloud-based ELNs to facilitate the homogeneity of data and high-quality standards improving connectivity, scalability, and innovation in the lab. This need for powerful, agile and flexible laboratory management solutions is only going to intensify. Cloud-based solutions provide proactive insights into data, allow better management of inventories, and help laboratories to manage their collaborations more effectively. The decision to utilize a SaaS ELN will be guided by a mix of efficiency, security, and regulatory considerations.

Standing wave cloud at sunrise, over Zimbabwe – EarthSky
Peter Lowenstein in Mutare, Zimbabwe, wrote:
Was surprised during my early morning walk on Wednesday [March 4, 2020] by the appearance of an unusual low-level standing wave (lenticular) cloud above a familiar saddle on a hill in Cecil Kop Nature Reserve. Managed to capture distant and closer views of the cloud appearing and then rising on a strong updraft of wind blowing from the east. Was only visible for about two minutes before dissipating. Lots of bright reflections of rising sunlight from beautiful altocumulus cloud above.
More information on altocumulus and lenticular clouds at:https://www.weatheronline.co.uk/reports/wxfacts/Altocumulus.htm
Thank you, Peter! For some more context on what he saw, check out his Facebook post:
Also, theres a great, simple explanation for these clouds at the Weather101 area of KOLD-News13 in mountainous Tucson, Arizona.
Standing wave clouds form when wind blows over a mountain. Since the wind cant possibly go INTO the mountain, it is forced up and over it.
When air rises, if it has enough moisture in it, the water vapor is condensed into visible cloud droplets. Thus, a cloud will form over or just downwind from the mountain.
Then, since the air was forced upward over the mountain, it undulates, or goes up and down as it moves on.
Each place its going up, a cloud forms
Bottom line: Standing wave cloud at sunrise, over Zimbabwe.

SophosLabs Reports on Cloud Snooper, an Advanced Targeted Attack that Allows Malware to Communicate Across Firewalls – CXOToday.com
Sophos(LSE: SOPH), a global leader in next-generation cybersecurity, today published a SophosLabs report onCloud Snooper,a sophisticated attack thatuses a unique combination of techniques to allow malware on servers to communicate freely with its command and control servers through firewalls. The report deconstructs the tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs) used in the attack. SophosLabs believes the attack was the work of a nation state motivated by espionage.
As detailed in the report, the TTPs used together include: a rootkit circumventing firewalls, a rare technique to gain access to servers disguised as normal traffic, and a backdoor payload that shares malicious code between both Windows and Linux operating systems, a known, but uncommon approach. While each individual element has been observed previously in attacks by highly-skilled adversaries, they have not been seen before in combination. Sophos expects that this package of TTPs will trickle down to the lower rungs of the cybercriminal hierarchy and be used as blueprints for new firewall attacks.
This is the first time we have seen an attack formula that combines a bypassing technique with a multi-platform payload targeting both Windows and Linux systems. IT security teams and network administrators need to be diligent about patching all external-facing services to prevent attackers from evading cloud and firewall security policies, said Sergei Shevchenko, threat research manager, SophosLabs. IT security teams also need to protect against multi-platform attacks. Until now, Windows-based assets have been the typical target, but attackers are more frequently considering Linux systems because cloud services have become popular hunting grounds. Its a matter of time before more cybercriminals adopt these techniques.

Microsoft Goes All-In On RPA (Robotic Process Automation) – Forbes
UKRAINE - 2020/02/25: In this photo illustration the Microsoft logo is seen displayed on a ... [+] smartphone. (Photo Illustration by Igor Golovniov/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images)
Robotic Process Automation (RPA), which involves automating repetitive and tedious processes within organizations, is dominated by three pure-play software vendors:UiPath, Blue Prism and Automation Anywhere. These companies are some of the fastest growing in the tech industry and have raised substantial amounts of venture capital.
But the mega software companies want to get a piece of the RPA opportunity. And the one that is perhaps best positioned is Microsoft.
This should be no surprise. The company has a massive roster of corporate customers, a strong global infrastructure and a vast ecosystem of partners and developers. It also helps that Microsoft has been aggressively bolstering its cloud business, which is now second only to Amazon.
The key to the strategy for RPA has been to leverage the Power Automate platform, which helps automate legacy systems.Just some of the features include:the understanding of structured and unstructured data (say for invoices) and the integrations with more than 300 modern apps and services. There are also numerous AI capabilities.
Ok then, so what about RPA? Well, it was added last year. Its called UI Flows, which has both attended and unattended automation. The application also is fairly easy to use as it allows for the recording of workflows (keystrokes, mouse movements, data entry, etc) and provides for low-code and no-code approaches. For example, Schlumberger has used the technology to drive efficiency with 13,000 botsand a majority of them were built outside of IT.
Everybody can be a developer, said Charles Lamanna, who is the CVP of the Citizen Developer Platform at Microsoft. It takes less than 30 seconds to sign up.You can then create a bot in a few minutes.
However, might the accessibility of this technology lead to security issues? For instance, could an employee do something like put payroll information in Dropbox storage?
Microsoft is certainly mindful of the risks and has created a system to enforce compliance. This is possible since the platform is cloud native. You have complete visibility with every bot, said Lamanna.
So how big is UI Flows in the RPA market?Well, its not clear. But in a blog post, Microsoft noted:Power Automate already helps hundreds of thousands of organizations automate millions of processes every day.
For example, Ingram Micro uses Power Automate across its organization to help with onboarding, account creation, management of credit lines, and other critical workflows.About 75% of the projects took less than 30 days to develop.
Yet I suspect we will see accelerated growth of UI Flowsand soon.A big part of this will certainly be the core technology. But I think the business model is also likely to be disruptive to the RPA industry.
Consider that its typical for a software vendor to charge on a per-bot basis, which could come to over $1,000 per month. This does not include the fees for orchestration and other modules.
But Microsoft is breaking this model, which involves two tiers. First, there is a $40-per-user monthly fee for running attended or unattended bots.Next, you can elect to pay $150-per-month for each unattended bot.
In other words, this low-cost strategy should greatly expand adoption. It will also likely have a major impact across the RPA landscape.Cost has certainly been a major point of concern for customers, especially those that are looking to scale the automation.
There are three trends on the horizon for RPA, said Lamanna.First, cloud is inevitable and cloud hosting will be the only environment that matters end-to-end. Second, if RPA wants to become mainstream, it has to be democratized. The reality is Windows didnt become a big deal until it was on everybodys desk. For RPA to be transformative, it has to be on everybodys desk. And the need for RPA is real. Over 60% of all positions for information workers spend over 30% of their time doing rote, automatable tasks. The economic benefit for companies, and even more importantly the fulfillment at work for employees, is very, very large. We just have to make it possible and affordable. And third, automation is going to stretch beyond UI automation. True automation has elements like chatbots and forms that collect information and these will all start to mix together with digital process automation and robotic process automation. Customers want to solve an automation problem with one integrated solution.
Tom (@ttaulli) is the author of the book,Artificial Intelligence Basics: A Non-Technical Introduction, as well as the upcoming book, The Robotic Process Automation Handbook: A Guide to Implementing RPA Systems.
