Alert Logic CEO to Deliver Call-to-Action to the Security and Cloud Hosting Industries During 451 Research’s Annual …

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Alert Logic, the leading provider of Security-as-a-Service solutions for the cloud, today announced that the companys president and CEO Gray Hall will deliver a call-to-action to the security and cloud hosting industry at 451 Researchs Hosting and Cloud Transformation Summit (HCTS NA) on Sept. 19, 2012, in Las Vegas. As a security partner to more than half of the largest cloud and hosting providers, Alert Logic has a unique visibility into the industry, and has used this insight to develop a path toward increased cloud migration through the delivery of superior security solutions.

The hosting and cloud industry has experienced impressive growth rates and has outpaced by a factor of seven the rest of the IT industry, but a large growth opportunity still exists in cloud security. The hosting and cloud industry has the opportunity to provide better IT security solutions in the cloud than enterprises can implement inside their own data centers.

As part of his Leadership Perspective address at the event, Mr. Hall will deliver a call-to-action to urge top security companies in the industry to truly evolve their businesses to address the unique service delivery model of cloud and hosting service providers.

The hosting and cloud industry must urge their security partners to adapt solutions to fit the business model of cloud providers and their customers, said Hall. It might seem counterintuitive to encourage the competition to adopt a model that has proven to be highly successful for Alert Logic. But growing the whole pie, and not just our slice of it, is our overriding objective as the leading provider of security-as-a-service for the cloud.

Alert Logic is a platinum sponsor of the Hosting & Cloud Transformation Summit, the premier forum for the hosting, data center and Internet infrastructure sectors. During this three-day conference, Alert Logic will also unveil its latest semi-annual research report, State of Cloud Security Report, which contains fact-based findings from approximately 1,600 customers in both on-premise and cloud environments.

DreamHost Introduces DreamObjects Cloud Storage Service

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire -09/05/12)- DreamHost, a global web and cloud hosting company, today announced DreamObjects, an inexpensive, scalable object storage service that was developed from the ground up to provide a reliable, flexible cloud storage solution for entrepreneurs and developers.

DreamObjects is fully compatible with APIs of other popular object storage services, making it ideal for application developers looking for faster performance and better reliability. Individuals and businesses looking to backup or store their files, media, and data online can do so simply and quickly, paying for the storage they use.

DreamHost is notorious for packing as much value as possible into complex services hidden behind easy-to-use interfaces and plain-english messaging, and DreamObjects is no exception. The price per GB of storage is just 7 cents per month for usage-based billing, and monthly prepaid plans go below 5 cents per GB to store 50 TB or more of data from your truly awesome digital life or social media startup venture. Data transfer out of the service is a low 7 cents per GB, and there are no nickel and dime charges for API requests or other bothersome fees.

"DreamHost is on a mission to give every content creator, entrepreneur and developer the freedom to create on the Internet. We do this by launching and supporting awesomely-engineered, super-flexible, and uber-value web and cloud services, and DreamObjects is definitely in this illustrious category," explained Simon Anderson, CEO of DreamHost. "In fact, the software we're using to run DreamObjects is so high-voltage and super-secret that I can't even say the name of it... without lisping at least."

DreamObjects is powered by Ceph, the revolutionary open source, massively scalable, distributed storage system. Ceph's architecture delivers true storage virtualization and advanced redundancy, as the one-of-a-kind CRUSH algorithm intelligently replicates data across the storage cluster and continuously rebalances that distributed data to maintain the highest level of reliability. As an open source project, Ceph frees DreamObjects users from the restrictions of vendor lock-in, and because it runs on top of inexpensive server hardware, Ceph drives down DreamHost's cost per gigabyte, which translates to big savings for their customers.

"Inktank is very excited to support DreamHost's industry-transforming object storage service," said Bryan Bogensberger, President & COO of Inktank. "By leveraging the massively scalable open source Ceph storage technology, DreamHost is able to innovate cloud storage and compete with the industry giants and, longer term, enable true hybrid cloud storage to those standing up Ceph in their own private data centers!"

Canonical Ltd's Ubuntu Linux 12.4 powers DreamObjects and was selected for its performance and scalability. Kyle MacDonald, VP Cloud at Canonical commented; "Canonical is pleased to see another leading cloud provider building their cloud infrastructure on Ubuntu. Ubuntu 12.04 LTS is the fastest, easiest and most cost effective way to build cloud infrastructures and it's the reference operating system for both Openstack and the Ceph file system. With scalability and openness built in, Ubuntu is the best choice for delivering Dreamhost's high performance cloud storage service."

DreamHost has also selected the Opscode Private Chef framework to automate the provisioning and configuration of the technology powering DreamObjects.

"DreamHost is answering the enterprise appetite for massive storage capacity with a unique service combining cloud scale and data center reliability," said Jay Wampold, VP of Marketing, Opscode. "By using Opscode Private Chef to automate its Ceph-powered platform, DreamHost is enabling businesses to store limitless amounts of data with the security of traditional storage offerings."

API-compatible with Amazon S3 and Rackspace Cloud Files, DreamObjects also enables access to a vast third-party app ecosystem that provides additional functionality to DreamHost's storage service. Users who already have data stored in S3 or Cloud Files can use DreamHost's easy-to-use migration tool to automatically transfer data into DreamObjects.

Jelastic Java Cloud Hosting Platform: New Market Opportunities for Web Hosts

September 4, 2012 Jelastic has announced the launch of version 1.8.2 of its new generation platform for Java cloud hosting (www.jelastic.com). Jelastic Java PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service) can run and automatically scale any Java application without any code changes. Being a highly competitive platform, Jelastic gives hosting service providers an opportunity to enter the fast-growing market segment of PaaS, attract new customers and effectively compete with Google, Amazon, Heroku and other leaders.

Platform-as-a-Service is a new and fast-growing market segment: according to Forester projections, it will reach 9.8 billion USD by 2015. Jelastic is a competitive platform that enables any hosting provider to enter this market and occupy a decent market share. What makes it different from other cloud Java hosting platforms?

Jelastic offers a fundamentally new approach to Java cloud hosting: the end users do not need to learn extra things and recode their applications in order to adapt to certain requirements. Jelastic is a really convenient and easy-to-deploy cloud platform that can run and scale any Java application without any code changes. However, Jelastic team took the needs of hosting providers into account, too: the platform automatically allocates physical resources and automatically moves applications between host servers to optimize the load. Unused environments can be hibernated for the same purpose Jelastic will awake them as soon as they start sending requests.

The freshly-launched Jelastic 1.8.2 is remarkable for a good number of new features and improvements. First, it provides an opportunity to upgrade the system without downtime at all. How is it possible? This platform is running on two physical servers for stability purposes: they are independent but identical copies of Jelastic infrastructure. Only one of them is active at a certain moment (the other is in standby mode). It means that the currently active server can receive requests, while the standby one can be upgraded. After that they switch the modes: the active server goes standby and becomes available for upgrading, too.

Second, bandwidth limitations for different types of accounts (beta, trial and billing) are now supported: the network quota can range from 1 to 4000. This feature ensures that customers of one and the same hosting provider would not affect each other in a negative way.

Third, the support for tiered pricing has been added: hosting providers can set certain tariffs for different categories of users depending on their traffic usage in the previous month. Jelastics tariff scale shows the minimum, maximum and free amount of traffic for each user category. In a nutshell, the more traffic the user consumes, the lower price for each GB he pays (and the more free traffic gets!).

It should be also noted that Jelastics quality assurance monitoring system has been improved: now it includes a subsystem for notifying publishers and subscribers about monitoring events, a single subscriber that collects information to MySQL database and the Pentaho BI system with reports and analysis charts. All these improvements guarantee that providers will be able to detect and report troubles before they get complaints from angry customers.

In addition to the aforesaid, there are a lot of new features for end users. They include an Elastic VDS with root access for each user, a Memcached node that ensures optimal memory use, the ability to create environments without application logic nodes, a system of balloon prompts that facilitates work with Jelastics dashboard interface, and many more.

The following hosting providers have already chosen Jelastic: dogado (Germany), Tsukaeru (Japan), Rusonyx (Russia), ServInt (US) and Layershift (UK). They have already got more than 25,000 signed-up users, though the platform was launched only in October 2011.

Squiz cloud expands into Melbourne

Squiz announced plans to expand its cloud hosting service with a new data centre opening in Melbourne this November.

The expansion lets Squiz provide locally hosted cloud services for enterprises in Victoria, the company said. The service includes replication and disaster recovery by tapping Squizs Sydney cloud platform and Canberra backup facility, it said.

Squiz began work on the expansion in late June, the company said. The company has 30 staff in Melbourne and more than 150 across the country.

The cloud business is growing exponentially because of the cost efficiencies and ease of mind it offers an organisation, Squiz national hosting manager, Jacob Gardiner, said in a statement.

When faced with making a decision about a new platform, we're seeing 85 to 90 per cent of our clients choosing to go onto the Squiz Cloud. The new data centre will be essential in helping us to meet demand for high quality, secure cloud services over the next few years.

5 signs your Cloud provider can't handle tier 1 apps

Picking the right Cloud hosting provider is among the most important decisions you'll make when planning the migration of your tier 1 applications. After all, Cloud providers that typically focus on developer services can quickly find themselves out of their depth when dealing with production applications.

"The requirements and capabilities that an organisation needs when running a production application are very different than one that's catering to developers," says Craig McLellan, cloud architecture author and chief technology officer of Hosting.com.

Tier 1 applications often benefit the most from the efficiency and scalability offered by a Cloud environment, which provides:

However, the applications themselves are often the most complex and most critical to a business, and questions around stakeholder buy-in, architecture, and ISV support and licensing must be addressed before taking the plunge. Unlike tier 2 applications, which can usually be virtualised in a self-contained manner, your tier 1 applications touch on many people, processes and technologies.

Also, by their very nature, they tend to have been around for a while. They tend to run on legacy hardware, which can make the whole process more challenging.

Look to your disaster recovery plan first

As a first step, before even considering Cloud providers, McLellan recommends CIOs take a look at their disaster recovery plan for the application in question.
