Synology ups the surveillance with new Station and cloud backup – Manila Bulletin
Synology recently announced the general availability ofSurveillance Station 9.0, the latest update to its cornerstone solution for comprehensive and scalable surveillance. Together with the on-premises offering, Synology is also introducingC2 Surveillance, a companion cloud service for footage backup and sharing.
With over 500,000 active installations and more than 2.5 million cameras managed, Surveillance Station has earned its spot as one of the most popular and trusted VMS solutions among both private and enterprise customers, said Tony Lin, product manager for surveillance at Synology. Todays releases embody our commitment to continuously upgrading the capabilities of our existing products and preparing them for increasingly complex implementations.
Designed for larger and more sophisticated deployments, Surveillance Station 9.0 features a redesigned user interface that seamlessly blends camera feeds, maps, playback controls, and alerts into a single dashboard to boost situational awareness.
Users can now set up hundreds of cameras within minutes using the new streamlined wizard that enables batch configuration by either importing a prepopulated spreadsheet or by copying settings from already deployed cameras.
Surveillance Station 9.0 enables businesses to add a separate layer of encryption to recorded footage for added protection in case the NVR, drives, or administrative credentials are compromised or stolen. Video streams and management data can also be ingested over the encrypted SRTP/HTTPS protocol to maximize privacy and protection against insider attacks.
Remote update management for online and offline recording servers inCentralized Management System (CMS)makes it simpler to keep multi-site deployments secure and resilient, ensuring that all devices receive the latest security patches and functionality improvements.
As we release yet another iteration of one of our signature products, we are proud to say that users large and small will find securing their premises an altogether more pleasant and integrated experience, Lin said. In Surveillance Station 9.0, everything is simply more within reach.
Taking protection a step further, Surveillance Station 9.0 supports dual recording to stream surveillance footage simultaneously to C2 Surveillance. Designed specifically to minimize potential data loss to mere seconds, C2 Surveillance ensures that footage is always accessible, even after a catastrophic event or in case of theft of systems from the premises they protect.
The new services online portal allows users to review recordings from anywhere, without requiring restoration of large amounts of data from a backup server and, if required, to share clips with authorities efficiently, whether or not the recording server is still available and functioning.
C2 Surveillance protects surveillance footage when it is most vulnerable, Lin said. Home users and businesses can now achieve peace of mind without investing in costly and complicated solutions complete data protection is really just a click away.
Surveillance Station 9.0 is available starting today for all Synology systems.1Users looking to upgrade their system can find more details in therelease notes.
C2 Surveillance launches today with plans starting from US$1 per month for each camera. Users will be able to try the service free of charge until October 31, 2022.

Being a responsible CTO isn’t just about moving to the cloud – Information Age
Cloud migration alone won't be enough to tackle the climate change crisis.
Nick Westall, CTO of CSI, discusses why being a responsible CTO when it comes to sustainability isnt just about moving to the cloud
IT departments are being asked by their boards to demonstrate improved sustainability. Often, they attribute their move to the cloud as a way of showing commitment to the reduction of their carbon footprint and the green agenda. While its a good example of carbon offset, is it just a way to pass the buck to the cloud provider rather than look in more depth about being a responsible user of IT? How much real consideration goes into calculating and demonstrating responsible computing in business today?
In 2020, the IBM Academy of Technology (AoT) brought together experts in many fields to discuss responsible computing. They analysed the anxieties of over 100 CTOs and looked at all aspects of IT to answer questions such as, Am I doing enough to be sustainable?; Are we being ethical in our use of data?; and Am I doing enough to ensure that the infrastructure we use is minimising its impact on the environment?. As a result, the initiative has created a framework which outlines important considerations of responsible computing.
From the more obvious topics associated with running your computing infrastructure to its wider impacts, the AoT framework summarised that responsible computing comprised of six main domains:
The reasons for needing to be a responsible CTO are just as strong as the need to be a tech-savvy one if a company wants to thrive in a digital economy. There are many facets to being a responsible CTO, such as making sure that code is being written in a diverse way, and that citizen data is being used appropriately.
In a BCS webinar, IBM fellow and vice-president for technology in EMEA, Rashik Parmar, summarised that the three biggest forces driving unprecedented change today included post-pandemic work; digitalisation; and the climate emergency. With many organisations turning to technology to help solve some of the biggest challenges theyre facing today, its clear that there will need to be answers about how this tech-heavy economy will impact the environment. It makes sense that this is often the first place that a CTO will start when deciding how to drive a more responsible future.
When you consider that each of the six domains above will make a huge difference to how responsible an organisation is deemed, its easy to see why its about much more than a move to the cloud.
If we focus on the environmental considerations, its becoming more commonly known that whilst a move to the cloud may be better for reducing an organisations carbon emissions than running multiple on-premises systems, the initiative alone isnt going to spell good news for climate change. In fact, if everyone were to move to the cloud in droves, the internet would need to quickly find a way of being more sustainable.
A large part of this is the requirement for major cloud providers to switch most of their data centres to more renewable energy sources. This is an area that falls outside of a customers control. But in fact, the issue of reducing emissions can be influenced far more greatly by the activities undertaken by the organisations themselves. It can all come down to understanding how their workloads are running and whether it is driving high levels of utilisation.
When it comes to running at high levels of utilisation, the answer isnt necessarily all cloud driven. For example, the performance and scale of the new IBM Power server, the E1080, delivers the benefits of consolidation at levels far higher than is possible with x86-based alternatives.
When compared with the cloud hyperscalers, such as Azure and AWS, it offers a greater ability to scale. In a recent webinar, David Spurway, IBM systems technology architect, modelled IBMs Power10 against Azure and AWS, looking at the largest of their offerings which could then be filled up with workloads such as multiple containers*.
*In the model, David used the conservative performance metric of the IDC QPI, which gives relative performance across architectures but does not consider advantages for specific workloads. For example, the new Power10 cores can hold over four times more containers per core than x86, so the real values may be even higher.
This is how the performance of the virtual servers, bare metal server, and physical IBM Power servers look when considering their maximum capacity:
When dividing the server performance rating by the number of cores, David then demonstrates a rough estimate of performance per core. This demonstrates that by doing much more per core, fewer cores are needed, which leads to less energy needed.
Whilst virtual servers in the cloud can run at high levels of utilisation near the 90% mark the average utilisation is much lower. This is because the number of workloads that smaller servers can hold is lower, and that means more servers are needed. With IBMs large E1080 server, average and peak utilisations demonstrate a more efficient use of the computational resources available. When utilisation is combined with scale and performance it provides a very powerful and efficient option.
If an organisation is on a software licencing model that adjusts depending on the level of utilisation and usage, it is also possible to achieve significant cost savings. The ability to turn applications on and off when not in use will reduce the number of processors needed. If the organisation is charged by the processor core, this could be as much as five times less expensive because of the software savings when running fewer cores.
There are detailed methodologies available that help organisations establish where they are today in terms of responsible computing. As sustainability is such a relatively new factor, its important for an organisation to understand where it is so that it can measure what improvements are being made in the form of Key Performance Indicators.
The three main considerations can be summarised as:
The responsible computing deliverables include methodologies for all six domains to help companies understand where they are today and demonstrate how they are improving and delivering against their KPIs. While its true that cloud infrastructure does deliver carbon savings, organisations should also think about the environmental and cost saving benefits in other on-premises measures.

Why Soon-To-Be Unsupported Windows 2012 and 2012 R2 Servers Pose Serious Corporate, Personal Risk for Execs – TechDecisions
Microsoft will officially end extended support for Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 in October of 2023, meaning the company will stop providing users with critical security updates and patches.
Organizations that continue to leverage Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 after this date will become increasingly vulnerable to cyber attack and compliance risks.
Any business that is still running Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 needs to institute a migration policy as soon as possible. Migrations can take months to years to complete depending on the number of servers and the size of the company.
IT execs without an upgrade path will soon find themselves at a critical point of no return that may leave their business and their executives personally liable for the risk caused by unsupported servers.
When Windows ended support for Windows 7 in January 2021, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation issued a warning to industry users that the platform had become unsafe.
As time passes, Windows 7 becomes more vulnerable to exploitation due to lack of security updates and new vulnerabilities discovered, the FBI notice said. With fewer customers able to maintain a patched Windows 7 system after its end of life, cybercriminals will continue to view Windows 7 as a soft target.
As expected, hackers thrive in attacking environments that no longer receive security support. These attacks do not just hit the technology product in question, but also serve as an entry point into your entire enterprise.

That was the case in 2018 when Zoll, a medical device vendor, sued Barracuda Networks. Zoll contended that Barracuda failed to manage a server migration properly, leaving the data of more than 275,000 of its users exposed.
As a result of those failures, Zoll is now liable for injury and damages incurred by its patients because of the breach. Failing to ensure all systems remain in compliance can put your company at risk and for senior management, possibly even making them criminally liable in the case of a security breach on unsupported OSs.
Along with security challenges, there is also the loss of functionality. Your organization relies on Windows Server 2012 or 2012 R2 to run applications and manage data on a daily basis. Microsofts Modern Lifecycle Policy calls for an organization to use the most current and updated applications. However, when those applications are updated, they are done without outdated servers. This creates issues in performance, compatibility, and reliability.
If you find yourself behind on the migration for Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 there is still time to act. Microsoft offers four primary ways for users to transfer data and applications to a new server platform. These include:
Microsoft and other technology providers give users plenty of runway to prepare for end-of-life events. Following the decommission of Windows Server 2012, the countdown begins for both Windows Server 2016 and Windows Server 2019, along with their different versions.
While many organizations rely on extended support, organizations should look to migrate servers before the standard end-of-life date. Extended support costs more, and organizations that delay a migration could find themselves quickly migrating data up to the last minute, elevating their risk.
Take a proactive approach to migrating server data. While these migrations offer a significant effort from technology teams, they are critical to maintaining operations and reducing security risk. Create a robust action plan for future migrations, and dont let end-of-life deadlines sneak up on you.

Upon 30th Anniversary of Chernobyl, ShelterZoom Announces Blockchain-based Solution For Management Of Nuclear Waste On A Global Scale – Digital…
Innovative partnership with impact initiative Unite For Italy and advisory firm Morichi Atelier drives sustainable solutions for nuclear waste management through a worlds first use case for distributed ledger technology
NEW YORK, NY / ACCESSWIRE / May 5, 2022 / As the world observes the 30thth anniversary of Chernobyl, ShelterZoom, Unite For Italy and Morichi Atelier announce the launch of the worlds first nuclear waste management use case for blockchain-based distributed ledger technology. This endeavor, dubbed Hercules, developed as a part of the MICADO European project and funded by the European Unions Horizon 2020 research and innovation program, aims to protect and secure all digi-waste (digital nuclear waste) sensitive data and digi-waste management operations through a powerful multi-functional platform.
Left to right: Chao Cheng-Shorland, CEO of ShelterZoom and Giordano Morichi, CEO of Morichi Atelier / Unite for Italy interviewed at Nasdaq television studios.
This innovative idea stemmed from Unite for Italy (a non-profit impact initiative) and was facilitated by Morichi Atelier, a boutique advisory firm, that identified a potential 30M USD market opportunity in the digi-waste sector. The Hyperledger blockchain Hercules collaboration with ShelterZoom aims to fix the outdated management and data protocols of the nuclear decommissioning and dismantling phases. The potential vulnerabilities caused by security breaches and/or human error can be largely prevented with this efficient digital solution. Until today, the physical data collected in analysis stages has not being fully secured through sufficient infrastructure ensuring data protection during waste characterization analysis. To solve the problem and eliminate any form of human error, the MICADO project developed a series of interconnected smart instrumentations to digitalize, process, and link all sensitive information to its protected internal cloud servers. These new systems are able to scan, measure, and track any form of radioactive elements (barrels, containers, bags, and any other radioactive material) in a much more secure and efficient manner. What was processed before via paper documents is now being immediately digitized through the use of technology marking the beginning of a new age for the industry called digi-waste.
At ShelterZoom, using our technology powered by blockchain, we are working on providing the highest level of security in a variety of fields. Our layered interconnected templates help categorize information, provide different levels of access, and tokenize data strings needed for waste characterization. We are thrilled to be part of this groundbreaking opportunity provided by Unite for Italy and are ready to improve the security level of data in the digi-waste field,. comments Chao Cheng-Shorland, CEO of ShelterZoom.
Companies must be built with the commitment to develop a better tomorrow for our global society and our planet following sustainable, impact-based business models. Sharing our same core values, ShelterZoom and their powerful technology follow these criteria and we believe they can add value in this specific sector. We are excited to be working with them and help guide business operations that will transform some of the complex problems in the field of nuclear energy into tangible solutions with a high level of impact, said Giordano Morichi, CEO & Founder of Morichi Atelier / Unite for Italy.
The innovative partnership between ShelterZoom, Unite For Italy and Morichi Atelier brings together a cutting-edge SaaS technology provider, a non-profit impact initiative aiming to drive advocacy for other impact initiatives, and a boutique sustainable development consulting firm to provide solutions for one of the most difficult issues the nuclear industry faces: data security in waste management. The team plans to develop a fully comprehensive roadmap to provide technology-oriented results that enhance the protection of nuclear data, sensitive information, and management procedures aimed at the resolution of the bigger issues at hand. By creating a more sustainable world, furthering a change in peoples perspectives regarding this energetic sector and paving the way for more companies to use their know-how to make a difference, ShelterZoom and Morichi Atelier have started building the first digitally-secure and fully scalable model that can accommodate the dozens of players in the nuclear waste management landscape.

3 Reasons Cloud Hosted Systems are More Secure Than You Think – Engineering News-Record
]]>
A common misconception in the IT industry is that traditional on-premise systems are inherently more secure than those hosted in the cloud. There are many benefits of cloud hosting, like eliminating the time and effort associated with infrastructure maintenance while also providing enhanced security to your organization. In this piece, Ill focus on the security aspect to relieve any concerns organizations may have about updating to a modern cloud-hosted system. While some of what Ill cover here is specific to how we provide hosting services, the vast majority are standard across the industry.
Before we delve into standard cloud security practices, lets talk a little about the perception that on-premise systems provide greater security. Its understandable; its a system your organization controls, and control gives the illusion of security. Theres a sense of safety behind your organizations firewall, but security at the perimeter does not protect against internal threats. Whether that means a deceptive email that shouldnt be opened, a disgruntled employee, or a vulnerability created by lack of updates, there are plenty of opportunities to wreak havoc from within.
Reason #1: Constant Vigilance
A good comparison to the cloud hosting industry is the autonomous vehicle industry. Both are relatively new technologies that are subject to heightened visibility in the public eye. In the same way a self-driving car accident sets back the entire industry, a large-scale security breach of a cloud hosting service could cause major damage to how the technology is perceived. Additionally, the security of cloud-hosted systems is inherently questioned rather than inherently trusted like it typically is for on-premise systems. For these reasons, security is always part of the conversation and a top priority for cloud-hosted systems - which leads us to the next point.
Reason #2: Hosting Provider Accountability and Expertise
With cloud-hosted systems, security accountability and expertise responsibilities are transferred offsite. Keep in mind that your on-premise IT infrastructure is only as strong as your own IT professionals. Joe in IT is really great, but if he gets the flu and crucial updates dont get applied as a result, that could spell disaster for your important data. With cloud hosting, youre utilizing a team of professionals dedicated to protecting your information at all costs through your hosting services provider. Youre also protected by public cloud providers like Amazon Web Services that have top-notch physical security and network security including many built-in features such as mechanisms to prevent Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks.
The Scale of AWS:
As I mentioned earlier, on-premise systems are typically highly focused on ingress and egress points to protect from external attacks. That leaves systems open to internal issues. Its like the human body; it doesnt matter how thick your skin is, if someone at the heart of your organization clicks a link or opens an email they shouldnt, everything can fall into chaos. The security philosophy in cloud-hosted systems is usually more holistic than on-premise; access to internal systems even from other internal systems is highly restricted.
Info Tech takes a number of actions to ensure security within our cloud hosting services. These elements arent necessarily universal, but the following are actions we take to ensure added security within its cloud hosting services:
Hopefully, this information helps correct the common misconceptions about security in a cloud-hosted system. If you have any additional questions, feel free to reach out to me at marty.provost@infotechfl.com.

3 Reasons Cloud Hosted Systems are More Secure Than You Think - Engineering News-Record
Power10: A Simple And Smooth Migration To The Cloud – IT Jungle
May 3, 2022Jason Hardy
Is it because you like the big upfront capital expense and the depreciating asset? Is it because installing PTFs and doing OS upgrades gives your IT team something to do during slow times? Or maybe its because the thought of migration and downtime is just completely overwhelming to you? While I dont have an answer to the first two reasons above, Im here to tell you that a migration does not have to be difficult, and downtime can be practically nonexistent.
I recently spent some time with an IBM reseller, and he walked me through the steps of migrating to one of the big IBM Power in the cloud service providers. To say that it was complex, and self-service would be an understatement. I know there are many companies that like the self-service cloud model. Give them an interface and they are happy to configure, manage and tweak the environment on their own but I talk to companies every day that want to walk away from hardware management and dont want the added burden of planning and executing a migration to the cloud. With their limited iSeries expertise on staff, they are happy to offload the project to someone else.
So how do you execute a simple and smooth migration to the cloud?
Start off by talking to your potential cloud service provider and asking questions about how they do migrations. An experienced provider should have a tried-and-true process that is designed to minimize downtime and the impact on your staff and business. We have done migrations for many companies in various industries and what we have found is that while everyone has some unique requirements, the core requirements remain the same.
Heres how we tackle migrations:
How long does this take? We typically tell companies that it is a two- to three-week process, but the reality is the majority of that time is allocated to customers for testing. Recently, we got a call from a company that hadnt done an upgrade in 20 years and its on-premise server had crashed. We were able to get them up and running on the cloud in a matter of days, restoring all their data from backups.
As mentioned above, the migration is a good time do PTF installs and OS upgrades. We often find that due to the investment in time and effort, companies dread making operating system upgrades and their servers are not current. When Racksquared is building the new environment, its the perfect time to upgrade to the current releases. We work with customers to help them assess what is necessary to get your server up to date and help you review changes on the new server so you can be comfortable before cutting over.
Moving from an on-premises server to the cloud can seem daunting and is definitely a shift in your paradigm. But with the right approach, the actual moment that the switch happens can be anti-climactic. With the environment in place, tested, updated, and confirmed ahead of time, everything is ready to go. Its just a matter of making the final cutover to the cloud environment, a change that end users dont even realize has happened.
When Watsons, a home entertainment retailer, moved to Racksquared cloud servers, its stores didnt even notice the change. Their programmer analyst described it: All the new networking, the new location all of this happened over a weekend. I dont think we experienced any downtime. She even went so far as to call the migration a non-event. Thats exactly the outcome our process was designed to produce. You can read their full story here.

Cloud computing enables businesses to store, manage, and process critical data by utilizing remote servers hosted on the internet. The increasing volume of data generation in websites and mobile apps, the growing emphasis on delivering customer-centric applications to drive customer satisfaction, and the growing need to control and reduce Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) and Operational Expenditure (OPEX) are just a few of the factors driving the growth of emerging technologies. Emerging technologies such as big data, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML) are gaining traction, propelling the global cloud computing market forward. The growth of cloud computing services is being driven by major factors such as data security, faster Disaster Recovery (DR), and meeting compliance requirements.
Westford, USA, May 03, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The need to reduce risks, achieve scalability and flexibility in moving and storing data, reduce storage and infrastructure complexities, and increase business efficiency drives the cloud computing market's growth.
Enterprises are concerned about the upfront and ongoing costs of hosting data on-premises. Furthermore, electricity costs, employee expenses, and downtime issues are a few additional concerns for businesses. The current competitive environment and global economic conditions have hastened the adoption of cost-effective measures to restructure business models. The increasing shift of enterprises toward digital transformation and the acceleration of customer experience are a few more factors driving the adoption of cloud computing services, ultimately lowering enterprise costs. Furthermore, the cloud provides the benefit of a pay-as-you-go model, which allows enterprises to pay for cloud services based on their usage, resulting in lower costs. Because of benefits such as on-demand availability, start-ups and SMEs are increasingly turning to cloud services.

Enterprises with existing infrastructure are moving toward cloud computing services and are willing to take a hybrid approach to reap the benefits of both on-premises and cloud services. SMEs are largely adopting cloud computing services due to significant benefits such as no initial infrastructure setup costs and on-demand computing service availability. These factors are helping to drive the adoption of hybrid cloud services in businesses. The hybrid cloud provides advantages such as improved workload management, increased security and compliance, and effective integration within DevOps teams. It also provides the flexibility to switch from on-premises to cloud or between clouds, as well as the scalability required to gain a competitive advantage over other companies. Increased user and resource mobility, ongoing cloud application migration, and the emergence of more sophisticated threats are driving organizations to adopt a hybrid cloud. Healthcare, BFSI, and government that prioritizes compliance, security, and customer experience use the hybrid deployment model. Furthermore, as cloud-based applications such as Dropbox, Facebook, and Gmail, among others, become more flexible and robust, the processing cycle in a real-time scenario must be faster. As a result, enterprises are shifting to Omni-cloud solutions to take advantage of numerous benefits such as ease of data use, effective decision making, secure data availability, and real-time scalability.
Cloud computing services assist businesses in increasing business efficiency and lowering costs. Furthermore, these services provide numerous benefits, such as flexibility, scalability, and agility. Despite the fact that the cloud provides numerous benefits and security measures, data stored in the cloud is still vulnerable to cyberattacks. The number of cyberattacks is rapidly increasing as the volume of data grows and enterprise initiatives toward digital transformation expand. Cyberattacks such as Spectre and Meltdown, as well as cloud malware injection attacks, account or service hijacking, and man-in-the-cloud attacks, expose enterprise data to vulnerabilities. These threats have the potential to cause business losses and shutdowns.
The top players in the Cloud Computing market are Google LLC, Amazon Web Services, Inc., Microsoft Inc., Alibaba Cloud International, IBM Corp., Yahoo, Inc., and Salesforce Inc. etc. New players are also entering the segment thus increasing its market penetration and therefore demand growing exponentially.
