HPE lifts earnings outlook: Storage finally returns to growth as overall revenues lift Blocks and Files – Blocks and Files

HPE has reported earnings showing a Y/Y increase in overall revenues, as the edge, compute, HPC and storage segments all reported business increases. For the storage segment, it was particularly welcome reprieve after six consecutive quarters of decline.

The firm was confident enough to issue a third dividend for this fiscal year.

In the first 2021 quarter, ended April 30, HPE reported $6.7bn in revenues, up 11 per cent Y/Y, with a profit of $259m, just 3.9 per cent of revenues. It was HPEs third consecutive quarter of Y/Y top line growth. in Dells equivalent quarter, its $938m profit was 9.4 per cent of its revenues, indicating that HPE has comparatively higher costs.

Antonio Neri, HPEs president and CEO, said of the results: We are strengthening our core compute and storage businesses, doubling down in our growth Intelligent Edge and HPC businesses and accelerating our pivot to as-a-service, while also advancing our cloud-first innovation agenda to become the edge-to-cloud platform as-a-service choice for our customers and partners.

Financial summary:

Business segment results:

HPE said the Aruba Edge Services platform supports well over 100,000 customers with 150 new customers added every day.

Within the storage segment, HPE said there was notable strength in software-defined storage, including Nimble, up 17 per cent Y/Y when adjusted for currency, with strong momentum in dHCI growing triple-digits. All flash arrays grew 20 per cent from the prior-year period led by Primera, the 3PAR replacement array, also up triple-digits from the prior-year period.

Compared to the latest storage-related results from Pure Storage, Nutanix, Dell Technologies and Snowflake, HPEs storage revenues show a downward trend since the start of its fy2019 with the latest quarter showing growth after six consecutive quarters of decline. It must be very welcome.

HPEs switchover to as-a-service/GreenLake product supply delivered a 30 per cent Y/Y increase in annual recurring revenue (ARR) to $678m.

The outlook for the next quarter is for a low single digital revenue increase Y/Y; Wells Fargo analyst Aaron Rakers estimated this to mean $6.921bn, a 1.5 per cent Y/Y increase. Neri said: We expect to continue to see improvement in customer IT spending throughout 2021 in the earnings call.

With HPE storage returning to growth, based on strong growth in the Nimble and Primera product lines, HPE must be hoping that the products announced successors, the Alletra 6000 (Nimble) and 9000 (Primera), will continue to build on this base. Both have an even stronger as-a-service element than before aiming for the cloud-style hybrid environment the firm believes customers want. Neri said Alletra was propelling HPEs storage business into our cloud-native software-defined data services business.

The focus is moving away from the storage hardware platforms to subscribed data services delivered across the on-premises and multiple public cloud environments.

We would expect HPE to pivot its on-premises ProLiant and Apollo server base to a consumption model over time, with a lifecycle management focus. Neri said we should stay tuned for more announcements here shortly.

How to Manage, Sync, and Share Files in Microsoft OneDrive – PCMag

You can house your files in the cloud at a variety of online storage sitesincluding Dropbox, Box, Google Drive, and iCloudbut only Microsoft OneDrive is built directly into Windows 10.

With OneDrive, you can store documents, photos, and other files online and sync them across multiple computers and devices. You can also share any file on OneDrive with other people.

To use OneDrive, you need a Microsoft Account, which you can set up through the Microsoft account website. You will also need the right type of storage plan for your needs. A basic free plan offers you 5GB of OneDrive space. For $1.99 a month, you can score 100GB of real estate. A subscription to Microsoft 365 Personal ($6.99 a month or $69.99 a year) grants you a hefty 1TB of OneDrive space, while Microsoft 365 Family ($9.99/month or $99.99/year) doles out 1TB each for up to six users.

OneDrive is automatically available and ready to use in Windows 10. In fact, when you go through the Windows 10 setup, you're asked if you want to use OneDrive. If you missed that opportunity, you should still see an icon for OneDrive in the System Tray. If the icon does not appear, you'll need to trigger it manually from the OneDrive exe file.

To do this, open File Explorer. Make sure that hidden items are enabled (click the View menu and check the box for Hidden items). Then, drill down to the following location: C:Users[YourUsername]AppDataLocalMicrosoftOneDrive.

In that folder, double-click the OneDrive.exe file, and the icon will appear in the System Tray. Right-click that icon and select Settings. Click the Settings tab and make sure the box to Start OneDrive automatically when I sign in to Windows is checked.

At the Settings screen, click the Account tab and select the Add an account button. At the Set up OneDrive screen, enter the email address for your Microsoft Account and click Sign in. Choose your type of OneDrive account (Personal, Work, or School). Enter your password and click Sign in.

Confirm the location that Microsoft has set for your OneDrive folder. You can change the location or accept the default and click Next. Review the tutorial screens that explain how to set up OneDrive, then click the Open my OneDrive folder.

Your next task is to select the folders and files you wish to add and sync to your OneDrive storage. From File Explorer, move any folders and files you wish to synchronize into your OneDrive location. For example, if you use a folder called Word Documents for your Microsoft Word files, move that entire folder into OneDrive (so that typically would be C:Users[username]OneDriveWord Documents).

Follow the same steps for any other folders you wish to include as part of your OneDrive synchronization. You can also create any new folders that you want to sync in OneDrive.

Next, youll need to choose the folders and files you wish to sync. Right-click the System Tray icon for OneDrive and select Settings. Click the Account tab and then select Choose folders. Here you'll see the files and folders that you moved into your OneDrive folder. If you wish to sync everything stored in your OneDrive folder, click the checkbox for Make all files available.

Otherwise, check the individual folders you wish to sync and uncheck any folders you don't want synced. Unchecked folders will remain on OneDrive but will be removed from your current PC. Click OK when done.

You can choose to store your synced files locally or opt to download them only when theyre needed. Click the Settings tab and look at the setting for Files-On-Demand, which should be enabled by default. With this setting turned on, your OneDrive files are stored online instead of on your computer.

The links to your online files still appear in File Explorer. When you double-click a file to access it, the file is downloaded on the fly from OneDrive to your computer. The advantage of Files-On-Demand is that you save space on your hard drive. The disadvantage is that you need to be online to access a file.

You may want to leave this option disabled if you have plenty of hard drive space but enabled if youre low on storage. You can also opt to store certain folders and files online only and others both online and locally. Click the checkbox if you wish to turn off this option.

After OneDrive is up and running, you can also use it to back up important folders. From the OneDrive program window, click the Backup tab and select Manage backup. You can opt to back up your desktop, pictures folder, and documents folder. Check the items you wish to back up and click Start backup.

You can also choose to automatically save photos and videos to OneDrive whenever you connect a camera, phone, or other picture-taking device. Plus, you can automatically save screenshots to OneDrive. To enable either option, check the box next to it.

You can view your local OneDrive folders and files in File Explorer. Right-click on the OneDrive System Tray icon and select Open folder.

You can also view OneDrive folders and files stored online. Again, right-click on the System Tray icon and select View online. Sign in with your Microsoft Account. Up pops a page displaying the files and folders contained in your online OneDrive space.

From this page, you can open a folder by clicking on it. Right-click a folder or file to access a pop-up menu with commands such as Download, Delete, Move To, Copy To, and Rename.

You can build your own photo albums from selected photos stored in OneDrive. At your online OneDrive site, click the entry for Photos in the left pane. Click the heading for Albums and then click the Create a new album button in the first thumbnail. Name your album, select the photos you wish to add, then click Add Album, and the album is created.

You can share your OneDrive folders or files with other people either from File Explorer or from your online OneDrive site. In File Explorer, right-click the file you wish to share and select Share from the pop-up menu. That generates a link you can email or share with someone else, giving that person the ability to read and potentially edit that file.

To share a file from OneDrive online, right-click the file and select Share. You can then send an email with a link to the shared file or copy a link to share elsewhere.

If you want to remove a PC from OneDrive, first make sure all the files you need are synced to that PC. Do this by opening the OneDrive System Tray icon. Select Settings > Account > Choose folders. Check the box to Sync all files and folders in OneDrive, especially if you unchecked any folders previously.

This action will download any files from OneDrive that dont already exist on your PC. This process will take some time, but you can check the progress by right-clicking the OneDrive System Tray icon to see how much time is left.

Once all your files are backed up to your PC, right-click the OneDrive System Tray icon and select Settings. At the Settings tab, uncheck the box to Start OneDrive automatically when I sign in to Windows. Then click the Account tab and click the Unlink this PC link. At the prompt, click the Unlink account button, and now your PC will no longer sync with OneDrive.

If you use any of Google's productivity apps (Gmail, Docs or Calendar, for example), using Google Drive makes sense. With Drive, you get 15GB of free storage for anything you upload, including photos, videos and documents. Those who need more space can sign up for Google's storage subscription service, Google One. Google One plans start at $2 a month in the US for 100GB of storage and other features, like Google Store discounts.

If you use Outlook or Windows 10 (which you can still download for free) and are used to Microsoft's ecosystem, OneDrive might be the better choice for you. Microsoft 365 subscribers (who also have access to apps like Word and Excel) have 1TB of storage available. Non-subscribers can sign up for OneDrive Basic for free, which gets you 5GB of storage. Or, similar to Google One's base tier, the OneDrive Standalone plan costs $2 a month for 100GB of storage.

Both Google Drive and OneDrive are compatible with Android and iOS, as well as Windows and MacOS desktops.

Google Drive gives you 15GB of free storage -- but you need to share it between all of your Google accounts.

Using Google Drive? Here's how to share files step by step:

1. On your computer, go to drive.google.com.

2. Right-click on the folder or file you want to share.

3. If you want to share with people or groups, click Share. Enter their email addresses in the Add people and groups field. On the next screen, you'll see that they are set to Editor as a default, which means they can make changes to the file or add photos. You can click the drop down and change them to Commenter or Viewer. Add a message if you want, and click Send. The people you share it with will get an email with a link to the file or folder.

4. If you want to get a shareable link that you can send to a person or group, right-click on the folder or file, and click Get link (you'll also see this if you click Share, at the bottom of the window). The default setting is Restricted, which means only people you've shared the file with in the step above can open the link. If you click that, you can change it to Anyone, which means anyone with the link can open it. If you choose Anyone, you can then decide if you'd like those people to be able to edit, comment or view the file from the dropdown. Click copy link.

Alternately, you can open any file and click Share in the top right corner to see these options.

The free OneDrive Basic plan gives you 5GB of storage.

If you're using OneDrive, here's how to share files:

1. Go to the OneDrive website, and sign in with your Microsoft account (or your work or school account).

2. Select the file or folder you want to share by clicking the circle in the upper corner of the item. You can also pick multiple items to share them together (though you can't do this on work or school accounts).

3. At the top of the page, click Share.

4. Enter the email addresses or groups you'd like to share with. Click the pencil icon next to this field, and choose if you want those you share with to be able to edit, or just to view the file. Add a message if you want to, and click Send. The people you share it with will get an email with a link to the file or folder.

5. If you'd rather get a link for sharing, click Share, and click the top box, which says People you specify can edit. You can change this setting to anyone with the link, anyone in your organization, people with existing access or specific people. Under Other settings, you can uncheck the allow editing box, which means people you share with can view, copy or download the file without making changes. Click Apply. Then, click Copy to copy the link.

Alternately, you can open any file and click Share in the top left corner to see these options.

ZipDrive turns any computer into a cloud drive accessible from anywhere for $20 – Boing Boing

Cloud storage has opened up all kinds of new file storage and sharing possibilities for small companies and on-the-go individuals. Of course, it does require some coordination issues to be worked out beforehand. Likedid you remember to move those files from your personal PC to the cloud?

And then there's the apocalyptic cloud storage fear what happens if I push an important file to the cloudand I can never get it back? Make no mistakewhile cloud storage is certainly useful, it isn't completely foolproof and cloud failures will happen.

Rather than worrying about the state of the cloud or your information when it's in somebody else's hands, a subscription to a ZipDrive Basic Plan can be your perfect middle ground between the joys of shared mobile file access and the horrors of worst-case cloud disasters.

In essence, ZipDrive turns any home or work computer into your own personal cloud drive. After installing the ZipDrive app on a desktop or laptop, users control access, deciding whether to make the entire contents of that computer available or just select drives or folders. It can even all live on an external hard drive attached to the computer.

Once ZipDrive members make their selections, and all the content they want shared can then be browsed, streamed, or edited from anywhere through any web browser or mobile device. Everything appears with the same file and folder structure intact, allowing users to easily find, play and view videos, audio, photos, and more on their home or office device anywhere they go. It's a perfect system for telecommuters trying to shuffle between work and home systems, or a road warrior who wants access to all their most critical files on a trip without duplicating or transferring files.

Members can share files or folders from a single computer with anyone via a secure shared link, which can even allow multiple team members to work on or edit a shared document like a Microsoft Office file in real-time.

In addition to all access sessions being secured with TLS v1.2 to protect vital data, ZipDrive also enlists other security measures as well, including two-step verification when someone signs into an account to make sure only authorized users have access.

Right now, users can secure a 10-year subscription to a ZipDrive Basic Plan allowing complete access to a single computer at almost 80 percent off the regular price. Normally $99, it's on sale now for only $19.99.

Prices subject to change.
