IO, IO, off to Microsoft’s cloud we go: Excelero hits Azure Blocks and Files – Blocks and Files

Excelero has made its scale-out NVMe-oF array software available on Azure.

NVMe-oF (NVMe-over-Fabric) extends a servers PCIe/NVMe protocol across network links. This means a server application can access remote flash drives for block data at RDMA speeds.

It will support more public clouds and we understand this to mean AWS and GCP.

Exceleros NVMesh software is deployed as a virtual, distributed flash array. It supports both converged (in-server SSDs) and disaggregated (all-flash array) architectures.

Aman Verma, Microsoft Azures HPC product manager, said: Exceleros NVMesh on Azures InfiniBand-enabled H- and N-series virtual machines provides an exciting new scalable, protected storage option for several high growth segments of the market, including HPC and AI workloads.

Excelero CEO Yaniv Romem said: NVMesh on Azure bridges the gap between what the market offers and what enterprises require. He said it helped avoid over-provisioning of storage so users could embrace hybrid- and multi-cloud strategies assuring performance, agility and cost control.

According to Excelero, the H-series VMs have many fast cores, with both NVMe and InfiniBand for high performance. The N-series VMs have GPUs and InfiniBand and can access storage in H-series VMs running NVMesh targets and clients.

The pitch is that you can run database and analytics workloads and high performance compute on Azures CPUs and GPUs without stalling for I/O. Customers can use the same methods and deploy the same software stack on-premises and in the Azure public cloud.

Users deploy Excelero on Azure using an Azure Marketplace image and Azure Resource Manager templates. The storage connectivity options include NFS, iSCSI, NVMesh-direct as well as NVMe-oF. NVMesh protects data on Azure by mirroring across NVMe drives. Customers can spread data across availability zones for extra protection.

An alternative Azure deployment method is to use a CSI plug-in with a native Red Hat OpenShift operator. This fits in with Excelero on-premises OpenShift sites as it provides a unified hybrid cloud experience.

Excelero said beta testing showed NVMesh on Azure provides up to 25x more IO/s and up to 10x more bandwidth to a single compute element from a protected Azure storage layer, while reducing latencies by 80 per cent.

Its competitors on Azure include NetApps Cloud Volumes ONTAP as well as PuresCloud Block Store and Silks VisionOS block storage software. Its getting pretty crowded in there.

How to Sync Cloud Services in 2021 [Cloud Sync and Transfers] Search

Ordinarily, there is no way for different cloud storage solutions to sync with one another. If you want to do this, you will need to use a third-party cloud-to-cloud management service. Our favorite multi-cloud manager is the exceptional MultCloud, and we will be using it to demonstrate how to sync between cloud storage services (read our MultCloud review).

Please note that most cloud management services that support cloud-to-cloud sync, function roughly the same way. So, these steps can be applied to managers like our second-best cloud-to-cloud transfer service, cloudHQ, as well.

Without a multi-cloud management service such as MultCloud, this is a needlessly complicated process. First, you need to log into your cloud storage service and download the files you want to transfer. Then you have to log into your other cloud storage and upload the desired files. A cloud-to-cloud management solution automates all of this, saving you precious time.

Using a proficient cloud-to-cloud management solution like MultCloud that has cloud sync enabled, you will be able to sync Google Drive to OneDrive (and vice versa). Management services such as MultCloud and cloudHQ use this method. Apps that use a desktop sync client require that you first install them on your computer, after which they will sync files to your computer.

To help you set up sync relationships between cloud storage services using a cloud-to-cloud management service, weve composed this step-by-step guide. In this particular example, we will use MultCloud as our multi-cloud manager of choice, and the cloud storages we will sync together will be two popular cloud storage platforms: Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive.

The first step is to open a MultCloud account, if you dont already have one. MultCloud has a very attractive free plan that gets you 30GB of data traffic a month, so you dont even have to spend any money to start syncing your cloud services. After you have created your MultCloud account, log in to it with your credentials.

Once youve logged in, you will be greeted with MultClouds user interface. Click on the add Cloud Drives icon in the upper-left corner of the screen.

In this section, you will be able to choose one of MultClouds supported cloud services and file transfer protocols. Go on and select Google Drive or whatever cloud storage you need to sync. Click on the add Google Drive account icon. Also, here you will be able to change your selected cloud storages display name if you wanted.

This is the final step before MultCloud can connect with Google Drive. In order for this to happen, MultCloud needs access to your Google Drive files, so click allow in order to authorize this.

Now that you have added Google Drive to your MultCloud, repeat steps two through four, but this time, select OneDrive instead. Regardless of which cloud storage service you select, this part of the process should stay the same.

You have successfully added Google Drive and OneDrive to MultCloud. Now, proceed to the cloud sync section. Add Google Drive as the source (the left square) and OneDrive as the destination (the right square).

MultCloud has two sync types: one-way and two-way sync. With one-way sync, all the files added, modified or deleted in the source directory (Google Drive) will be copied to the destination directory (OneDrive). With two-way sync, every file you add to either the source or destination directories will be copied over, keeping the files the same on both. Choose one of these types.

MultCloud gives you the option to include or exclude certain cloud files from being transferred based on their name or file types. Please note that this step is optional since you can choose to transfer all of your files, but filtering provides you with an additional level of control.

Another optional step is to schedule the sync to take place at a specific time, such as the same day every week or month. Otherwise, the sync will run in real time.

All thats left is to click sync now and start your cloud-to-cloud sync process.

Simply put, cloud sync is a way to access your files from many devices using the power of cloud storage. Cloud syncing makes sure that whenever you upload a file to your cloud storage, its immediately downloaded to all of your devices where you have the cloud app installed. When you update a cloud file, its simultaneously updated in the cloud and on all of your devices.

Cloud-to-cloud syncing works in the same way normal cloud sync does, with one notable difference. This difference being that you will need to use a multi-cloud management service that will work as a sort of bridge between the cloud storage platforms in question. This manager handles the file sync, backup and transfer from one cloud account to another.

The benefits of having cloud-to-cloud sync relationships between your cloud storages include a much easier cloud migration process and backing up your cloud files. Without a cloud-to-cloud management service, you would need to first manually download your files from one cloud storage platform and then upload them to another.

This is especially time-consuming if you are dealing with large files or cloud services that can store unlimited amounts of data. Instead of performing this by hand, you can instead automate these processes with a multi-cloud manager like MultCloud or cloudHQ.

Cloud archiving: A perfect use case, but beware costs and egress issues – ComputerWeekly.com

A little over a decade ago, the notion of cloud storage would have been alien to the vast majority of the population. It has now become so much part of our vocabulary that people talk glibly about storing their personal data in the cloud.

It is, therefore, no surprise that enterprises are eagerly adopting the cloud as a storage technology. Amazon Web Services (AWS), by far the leading player in the public cloud service sector, launched its S3 storage product 15 years ago, and the company quickly established itself as the pace-setter in this new market.

Many companies looking to move to the cloud for the first time do so by exploring storage options currently,about 50% of corporate data is held in the cloud, and this is growing all the time.

Archived data is particularly suited to the cloud because many of its disadvantages do not apply. For example, many organisations shy away from cloud storage because latency is an issue. They have applications that cannot exist in a geographically remote location. But this does not apply to archived material. Historical data need not be delivered so quickly that a few seconds delay matters.

The big plus point for cloud archiving is cost. AWSs S3 was launched with the aim of simplifying the cost of storage, but the company has since introduced Glacier and Deep Glacier as storage options taking the cost to a lower level. For example, AWSs Deep Glacier option can be less than a dollar per terabyte for a months storage. And such low costs arent unique to Amazon. Microsoft Azures archiving option, LRS, is a similar price.

As a guide, AWSs S3 is nearly 200 times more expensive (and again, Microsoft and Googles costs are very similar). Its clear then, that any company looking for a cost-effective long-term archiving option will find the cloud an attractive option.

But theres another dimension to archiving in the cloud and thats to do with the technology itself.

Anyone whos been in the corporate world for any length of time will have seen many changes in storage media. There have been multiple form factors and, given that archiving is a long-term project, any CIO will have to make a choice about what medium to use, while also making sure the company has the equipment to read it. It may be a simple choice to install a DLT library, for example, but will the hardware to read it be around 20 years down the line?

Its a choice thats been moved to the forefront of decision-making since the passing of theGeneral Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Companies that have been content to hold long-term data on hard-to-reach tape have suddenly had to make sure everything is now readily available. Its something that has concentrated IT managers minds.

Moving to the cloud solves this legacy hardware issue. Companies dont need to keep an inventory of old hardware. By transferring data to a cloud provider, archiving is future-proofed and organisations can be reasonably content that everything will be archived for years into the future which would be good news for any data protection officers struggling to meet GDPR obligations.

GDPR is not the only factor that has prompted moves to the cloud. The Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic and the increasing number of people working from home or remote locations has also had an impact on the way employees access corporate systems.

The closure of many offices to stop the spread of the virus has made physical archiving to tape librariesmore challenging and off-site archiving to the cloud a more attractive option. Its also become far easier to access archived data from anywhere and, as the signs are that there will be a growing number of people home working in the future, cloud archiving will become an automatic choice for many organisations.

However, there are many companies that remain fearful of off-site archiving. There are still concerns over security, despite the many millions of pounds that cloud companies invest in top-of-the-range security systems. Its true that users are far more confident about cloud security than they used to be, but there are still some die-hards fearful of anything not on their own systems.

While security is fading away as an issue, there are two other factors that are still in play.

First of all, theres cost. As we have seen, archiving costs are low and falling all the time. However, theres been a slow realisation among IT managers that cloud costs dont always match expectations and what has been sold as a cheap option can end up costing far more than expected.

The other issue is the concern about getting data out. This is particularly relevant for archiving when managers have to take the long-term view and want to ensure their data is available for a considerable length of time. There have been instances where data is held by a provider that has gone bust and has become inaccessible to customers, which is a nightmare for any manager with compliance responsibilities.

According to Bryan Betts, senior research analyst at Freeform Dynamics, these are definitely the two areas of most concern. CIOs are savvy that cloud is not the cheap option and are concerned they could be caught up by terms and conditions and find theres a problem getting data out. There are also difficulties in moving between clouds, he says.

However, he cautioned that there is a definite gap between reality and expectation. People are more fearful about costs and terms and conditions than is justified in reality. Managers who have actually made the move dont show these concerns, adds Betts.

There are still issues that may inhibit the move to the cloud. While there are many examples of companies that want the move to boost operating expenditureand cut down on capital expenditure, there are instances of organisations that want to maintain the latter for accountancy reasons. And, says Betts, there are organisations that have pulled everything back from the cloud because its easier to control costs.

Some companies have been reluctant to move to the cloud for off-site archiving because of a perceived lack of cloud skills this may apply particularly to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). But, as Betts points out, theres still a need for skills if theyre going to implement an on-premise policy, so its not such a straightforward swap. SMEs may well lack some of these specialist skills too, and may find it particularly the case when adhering to GDPR compliance.

It is clear there are plenty of advantages to archiving in the cloud. By freeing CIOs from the pain of choosing a hardware medium for long-term storage, moving to the cloud offers greater flexibility.

But thats not to say that its a pain-free choice. Close attention must be paid to cost and theres definitely a need for companies to ensure theyre not left high and dry with restrictive terms and conditions that can lead to difficulties in accessing data.

However, as we move further away from nine-to-five, office-based work, cloud archiving looks, for many firms, to be the best way forward.

Informatica streamlines APAC operations amid growing cloud business – ComputerWeekly.com

Informatica has streamlined its Asia-Pacific operations to better meet the growing demand for cloud-based data management platforms in the region.

In 2020, the software supplier decided to concentrate its staff and operations across the region in the key markets of Singapore, Hong Kong, Sydney, and Tokyo, according to its vice-president and general manager for Asia-Pacific and Japan, Tony Frey.

Frey described the move, which came into full force in the third quarter last year, as a big change that would enable Informatica to scale to the next level. As a company, were not as big as Microsoft and for us to scale and continue to put Informatica staff into markets like Thailand and Vietnam was just not the right model, he added.

In those developing markets, including the Philippines and Indonesia, where Informatica no longer has direct operations, Frey said the company will rely on local distributors and partners such as Deloitte and Accenture to fulfil market demand. The new go-to-market strategy appears to be working, going by the companys recent growth and business projections.

Our business has grown year-over-year for two to three consecutive years in the market, said Frey. Specifically, weve grown the annual recurring revenue of our cloud business by over 40% from 2019 to 2020, and we're expecting over 40% growth in 2021 over 2020.

The company has over 2,000 Asia-Pacific customers who rely on its data management platform in areas such as data integration, data quality, data governance and master data management, among others. Data integration and data quality are often cited as the top two challenges that enterprises face with data management.

Informatica has come a long way since its early days as a supplier of on-premise extract, transform, load (ETL) tools to move data from its source to a data storage system, typically a data warehouse. It is now focused on delivering cloud-based offerings as more enterprise store and process data using public cloud services.

Frey said that for the past few years, Informatica has not only ported but rebuilt its software into cloud-native services running on Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud through partnerships with hyperscale cloud suppliers.

In a region where cloud adoption varies across countries, Frey singled out Australia as a key market which has the keenest users of cloud-based data management tools, followed by Singapore.

For those that are behind the curve, Frey said while there is pressure on companies to move to the cloud, it will not happen overnight.

Weve got to be prepared to set up our business so that we can catch the customer when they're ready to do it, he added. We can encourage them and show them a roadmap as to how to do it.

For example, through Informaticas new Intelligent Data Management Cloud platform that facilities data management processes from data ingestion to lifting and shifting data, Frey said enterprises will find it easier to navigate the challenges of managing data on the cloud.

That's a big part of what we're doing in certain markets to educate customers in a predictable and streamlined manner on how they can start that process, he added.

Meanwhile, enterprises that want to keep using on-premise software can do so through a software maintenance programme for existing Informatica customers who will continue to receive support for their investments, Frey said, adding, however, that there will be new products that will only be available through the cloud.

Frey acknowledged the competition in the data management landscape, which is dotted with players ranging from storage suppliers to backup and recovery software companies, adding that Informatica differentiates itself through its track record and laser focus on data management.

Weve been working in this area for 25 straight years, and we have only worked in this area, he said. So, everything that we do is 100% core to data management, whether that be ingestion, data integration or master data management.
