Concert tickets and your couch: Online streaming platforms keep performers and venues in business | Opinion – PennLive

What does art look like during a pandemic?

Not asking for a half-baked quote about how Shakespeare wrote King Lear during the bubonic plague, I mean to ask something that actually impacts people today: how do we enjoy art, performances, or concerts when we cant come together for a show?

The performance industry has effectively frozen in place for the duration of the coronavirus lockdown. Looking down the line to when Pennsylvania begins to reopen, returning to normal will be a long process. For those of us who make our living putting together large gatherings of people, finding a way to survive during this time isnt easy. But by using digital platforms to bring performances to our audiences online, weve managed to find a way to push forward.

Managing The Fire, an independent, grass-roots rock club in Philadelphia, this time has meant uncertainty, and by necessity creativity. Weve had to close and cancel our shows for the foreseeable future, but being creatives at heart, we knew that the desire to put on a show or to experience live music and art wouldnt stop because in-person concerts shut down. If we could find a way to bring our concerts to the community online, we could use the proceeds to help support our employees, and thats exactly what we did.

On April 18, we hosted our first-ever International Stay at Home Fest, an online celebration of music in the time of coronavirus. We organized bands from across the world, streaming performers all the way from Japan, Morocco, Italy, and even Thailand as well as a local Philly band. The show went live on YouTube and was a success, and we were able to give back to our employees throughout this time of hardship. We have since started hosting open-mic performances every Monday, and plan to host another virtual music festival, the Rock Goddess Fest, on June 13.

Running a business, especially one that cannot easily transition to remote work or an online business model, is difficult in times of crisis. But online digital tools like YouTube make it easier to think creatively. Using programs like Google Docs and the G-Suite of free organization and communication services have allowed us to share our plans and build an online music festival on short notice with performers scattered across time zones and separated by oceans.

You never know when crisis will strike, and transitioning online can be a lifesaver like it was for us. Thats something that the tech world knows theyve made it easier than ever for anyone to use free services like YouTube and cloud storage, and our states lawmakers would be astute to recognize and encourage that growth. Thats why I recently signed a letter to Governor Wolf urging his administration to avoid making any policy decisions that would make it more difficult, or costly, for business owners like me to access digital technology platforms. The letter was organized by the Connected Commerce Council, the same organization who just released timely research that found 30% of businesses nationwide would be out of business without access to digital tools during the pandemic.

While COVID-19 has presented businesses like ours with serious challenges, it has also spotlighted the way that even the most face-to-face businesses and organizations can use aspects of internet technology to create new and exciting ways to support their business. And we know, even when things get back to normal, Pennsylvanias businesses will rely more on digital technologies than ever before, so they must be affordable, accessible, and supported by cognizant policy.

Today, treat yourself by going for a fun night in, and take advantage of the technologies that venues have at our disposal to keep the show going even when we cant be together. Artists are the fabric that knits our communities together, and until we can be side by side again, we value the little moments online we can use to keep our community connected.

Karen Lauria Saillant, owner of The Fire, a Philadelphia music venue at 412 W Girard Ave.

Samsung’s Galaxy M11 takes the fight to the Redmi Note 8 in India – Android Central

Samsung today launched two new budget-friendly Galaxy M series phones in India: the Galaxy M11 and Galaxy M01. While the Galaxy M11 quietly made its global debut in March, the Galaxy M01 is an all-new phone.

The Galaxy M11 comes with a 6.4-inch HD+ Infinity-O display and is powered by the three-year old Snapdragon 450 processor, paired with up to 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage. It has a triple-camera setup at the rear featuring a 13MP primary sensor, 5MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 2MP depth sensor. For selfies, the phone offers an 8MP camera with an f/2.0 aperture. It also includes a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and a 5,000mAh battery with 15W fast charging.

The Samsung Galaxy M11 will be going on sale in India via leading e-commerce platforms including Flipkart and Amazon from 3 PM today. Samsung has priced the 3GB/32GB version of the phone at 10,999 ($145), while the 4GB/64GB version will retail for 12,999 ($172). As for color options, the M11 will be available in Black, Violet, and Metallic Blue. Samsung is pitting the Galaxy M11 against phones like the Redmi Note 8 and the recently launched Realme Narzo 10, which offer significantly more impressive specs and better value for money.

Samsung's Galaxy M01 features a smaller 5.7-inch HD+ display with a 5MP selfie camera housed inside the V-shaped notch at the top. Under the hood is an outdated Snapdragon 439 chipset, coupled with 3GB of RAM and 32GB storage. The phone has a dual-camera setup on the back with a 13MP primary shooter and a 2MP depth sensor. While it doesn't include a fingerprint sensor, the phone supports face unlock. Keeping the lights on is a 4,000mAh battery. Both the Galaxy M11 and M01 run Android 10 out of the box with Samsung's One UI on top.

The Galaxy M01 is also slated to go on sale in India across all major e-commerce portals and offline stores starting today. It has been priced at 8,999 ($119).

Microsoft works with WANdisco to shift on-premises data lakes to the Azure cloud – Blocks and Files

Microsoft is prepping a data lake migration service for Azure, with the help of WANdisco replication software.

Two WANdisco services are available as a limited customer preview. They are LiveData Migrator for Azure, which performs a single scan migration of data, and LiveData Plane for Azure, which captures any data changes and applies them at target sites to ensure data consistency. They work in conjunction to establish an active:active data plane between locations.

WANdiscos LiveData Platform services and billing are integrated in the Azure customer portal and the company says more turnkey Azure services are planned.

Dave Richards, CEO and chairman of WANdisco, said: The LiveData Platform service [is] the culmination of joint engineering work between WANdisco and Microsoft, with the objective of creating a new native Azure service built around data movement and data consistency.

Tad Brockway, Microsoft corporate VP for Azure Storage, Media and Edge, said: Customers have a significant opportunity to optimise costs and expand analytics and insights capabilities by moving their on-premises data lakes to the cloud. WANdisco Live Data Migrator and LiveData Plane are the first offerings to provide a fully integrated and turnkey experience for customers migrating Hadoop data into Azure Data Lake Storage seamlessly and without business disruption.

The two companies envisage the migration of petabyte-scale data lakes from on-premises data centres to Azure, using WANDiscos LiveData Platform technology. Such migrations take time and the data lake are active during the process. If data is sent to Azure and then updated back at a source site then we have unreliable data two versions of the truth. WANdiscos Distributed Coordination Engine (DConE) uses consensus technology which resolves this data version disparity.

Microsoft and WANdisco are initially seeking 50-plus customers with 200-300 exabytes of data on-premises that could migrate to the Azure cloud. They have sized the market at more than $1bn.

UK-based WANdisco has OEM deals with IBM and Dell Technologies and reselling deals with Amazon Web Services, Cisco, Google Cloud, HPE, Microsoft Azure and Oracle for its LiveData Platform software.

Managing the capacity for remote work – ITWeb

Anthony Njoroge, Product Manager at Comstor Africa.

More companies across Africa are now deploying digital transformation as a result of ongoing global events that have forced them to become innovative as to where their workloads reside. Within this, there is a clear need to get additional capacity from an ICT environment, to support the sudden increase in remote workers, as well as concern around the management of data centres when physical access to infrastructure is limited.

This has resulted in a shift in customer buying patterns as more organisations are continually gearing up for the workload demands on critical applications. For its part, NetApp is working with its partners to help ensure products get to where they are needed most.

It is a brave new world, which has shifted the conversation of when digital transformation will happen to how it is happening. Our recently launched Inspire Africa programme is placing workloads within the digital realm under the microscope. Not only must we partner with vendors like NetApp on how to support customers, but we as Comstor need to be inventive in how we deliver solutions to partners," says Anthony Njoroge, Product Manager at Comstor Africa.

It is a workload tango, between the cloud and on-premises solutions, and organisations need to optimise their existing investments fully. When it comes to NetApp, the vendor is providing the built-in tools that support data security, remote access and virtual desktop infrastructure. It also offers reliability, performance and the availability of data and applications as a core component of its offering. In short, it is offering companies the tools they need to equip the vast amounts of remote workers with a foundation built on reliable infrastructure that supports them, while also delivering on the basic expectations for performance.

Work demands

Research shows most companies plan on moving at least 5% of their previously on-site workforce to permanently remote positions in the post-lockdown landscape. This indicates how decision-makers are realising that technology and society have evolved to make this a more viable option. It also helps mitigate the risks associated with companies unable to physically open their doors but still having productive employees who can keep operations going from their homes.

However, this means that inferior technology and infrastructure are the most significant barriers to effective remote working.

"Comstor Africa is working with NetApp to develop solutions that can help address this challenge. And we are achieving this by understanding the requirements of linking remote work infrastructures with end-user computing (EUC) and virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) applications and supporting the overall application landscape. For example, Azure NetApp Files and Cloud Volumes Service assist a company in managing shared storage resources across cloud vendors and regions.

Furthermore, NetApp and Cisco have partnered to deliver FlexPod VDI, an on-premises solution that includes all the hardware components needed to support virtual desktop and learning environments. This secure platform is already used by many large companies to support remote workers. A business can start with a solution to support 500 concurrent users and then scale up to support thousands.

Understanding risk

Additionally, existing NetApp customers can log in to the NetApp Active IQ to take advantage of new predictive risk models for systems that are reaching performance or capacity limits. With this, key learnings will help decision-makers identify where the business might be vulnerable to new security threats, among other things.

Once the company understands where the hotspots are (both from security and operational perspectives), the NetApp product stack can assist in rationalising the data and infrastructure, move data between on-premises and cloud storage, and help deliver data availability across multi-cloud environments. It is a case of true hybridity.

People have been bandying the phrase the new normal around quite liberally. And yet, massive changes await businesses, employees and customers as countries across the continent look to jumpstart their economies and grow. However, this means embracing a fresh outlook and not falling prey to just returning to traditional ways of working. The cloud and the related infrastructure will become indispensable allies in this regard, concludes Njoroge.

Tech Q&A: Reaching the limits of unlimited storage in Google Photos – telegraphherald.com

Question: For years, Ive been storing my camera and phone pictures to my online Google Photos account. (I download the camera photos to my PC and upload them to Google Photos from there.)

But for the last couple of months I either havent been able to upload the camera photos from my PC, or could only upload some photos but not others.

Meanwhile, photos I take with my phone are being uploaded to Google Photos. (I dont think this is caused by a shortage of online storage space, because Google Photos is set to free unlimited storage.) Whats wrong? R.S. Roseville, Minn.

ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW ADVERTISEMENT

Answer: I think you have two problems: The Google Photos settings on your PC dont match those on your phone, and your unlimited storage does have a limit.

Normally, Google Photos must share its 15 gigabytes of free online storage with your email (Gmail) and cloud data storage (Google Drive.) One advantage of this sharing arrangement is that Google stores your photos at their original quality they retain the amount of data they had when you took them.

But, as youve discovered, Google also offers another choice called high quality, which comes with the promise of free unlimited storage. Under this option, Google Photos uses a technique called data compression that discards some of the data in each photo you store, permanently lowering the photos visual quality (a 10-megabyte photo will be shrunk to 2 or 3 megabytes.)

Because these compressed photos take up less storage space, Google gives you something in return: Your high quality photos will no longer count against your 15 gigabytes of shared storage; this essentially gives you unlimited photo storage.

Heres where the settings on your PC and phone come in. They connect to Google Photos in different ways, so you must choose the high quality photo storage option on each device. While your PC is using the high quality method, I suspect that your phone is not.

As a result, your phone is storing photos online in original quality, which uses up a larger and larger portion of your 15 gigabytes of shared storage. If youve been doing this for years, your shared storage may be approaching zero. Once your Google account is full, you wont be able to store any more data even your unlimited photo storage will stop.

Running low on storage could show up in a couple of ways:

If your 15-gigabyte allotment is nearly used up, you might be able to upload a limited number of additional pictures to Google Photos. This would explain why, on some days, you could upload some photos and not others.

Your remaining available storage might fluctuate daily as a result of adding or deleting data from Photos, Gmail or Drive. As a result, you might be able to store additional photos one day but not the next. This would explain the times that you couldnt upload photos.

What can you do? Delete some data, or buy additional storage capacity (Google charges $2 per month for 100 gigabytes.)

Alternatively, you can reclaim some storage space by using the Google Photos recover storage button (below and to the right of the high quality box youve already checked.)

That will downsize your existing original quality photos to high quality so that they arent counted against your 15-gigabytes of shared storage. You should also change your phones Google Photos setting so that, in the future, it stores photos online at high quality instead of original. (To change the Google Photos picture quality on any device, see tinyurl.com/yc3hcuf7).

Pure Storage CEO On Why The Firm Was ‘Well Positioned’ Before COVID-19 Hit And What’s Next – CRN: Technology news for channel partners and solution…

Riding A Wave Of Software, Services For Storage Growth

Pure Storage continues to grow its storage business with a focus on the company's software and especially its Pure-as-a-Service subscription service. However, CEO Charles Giancarlo also makes it clear that hardware, whether sold by Pure Storage or in an Amazon Web Services cloud, is important for storage, given that that software and services need someplace to run.

The Mountain View, Calif.-based all-flash storage pioneer this week released its first fiscal quarter 2021 financials, reporting a year-over-year 12-percent growth in total revenue, a 37-percent growth in subscription services revenue, and a big drop in its expected net loss. After the financial report was released, Giancarlo talked to CRN about the results and about what can be expected from Pure Storage for the rest of 2020. He also outlined some of what to expect at the virtual Pure Accelerate conference in early June, and offered Pure's take on Dell Technologies' new PowerStore midrange storage line.

Funding For Growth

Wasabi, a Boston-based developer of cloud storage technology, this week unveiled a new round of funding that brought it $30 million, bringing total funding to $110 million.

Wasabi was founded by David Friend, a serial entrepreneur who was best known as one of the co-founders of Carbonite. Friend is taking an unusual route in fundraising, depending on family offices instead of venture capital investors as a way to keep control of the company in local hands and be more able to focus on long-term plans.

Friend recently spoke with CRN about the investment, the competitive cloud storage environment the company faces, and the positive and negative impacts it is seeing from the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

Here is how this fast-growing company is faring and what it expects going forward.
