Microsoft Teams to add new cloud storage options, coming by end of June – OnMSFT (blog)
Microsoft Teams, the companys new Slack competitor is slowly but surely becoming an open platform that plays nice with popular third-party services. Back at Build 2017, the company announced that developers cannow release their own Teams apps on the Office Store, which will be key to drive adoption of the new chat-based workspace in Office 365.
As it turns out, Microsoft will also let Teams users access other cloud storage appsthan the companys own OneDrive for Business service.The new capability is listed on Microsofts Office 365 Roadmap website, and a separate post on the Office 365 portal revealed that the new cloud storage options shouldroll out to all users by the end of June. Here are some additional details included in the post:
Users will be able to upload/share files from additional cloud storage services in Microsoft Teams channels and chats. We will provide details on which storage services will be available, by the end of June.
This feature will be on by default. To give you more control, each individual cloud storage provider will be configurable in Office 365 admin center; including the ability to enable or disable specific cloud storage services. This will provide flexibility to allow only the options your organization needs to use.

On-premise infrastructure proponents are quick to point out the cost-wall enterprises hit in cloud storage, but their arguments dont fairly weigh the pros and cons, according toMick Bass (pictured), chief executive officer of 47Lining LLC.

It is key to teach customers moving data to the cloud that a data lakes function is to generate value, provided they tool it properly, Bass stated.
While byte for byte, cloud storage may bear a higher sticker price than on-prem, customers must look at the value they ultimately derive, Bass explained. In several ways, the cloud allows users to earn bigger profits from data lakes in less time, he added.
The clouds elastic pricing model allows companies to inexpensively bootstrap their data lakes with a small amount of data and a single use case; it is easy to scale up later, should they decide to based on gains made, again paying only for what they need, Bass stated.
Also, AWS brings a breadth of tools for data analytics that is difficult to find elsewhere, he said.Analysts are really empowered through his approach, because they can choose the right tool for the right job and reduce the time to business benefit, Bass explained.
Specific kinds of streaming data fit very poorly on-prem, particularly Internet of Things data, according to Bass.
Many enterprises are augmenting their existing data warehouse with sensor-oriented time series data and theres really no place in the enterprise for that data currently to land, he said.
Cloud providers can cull and integrate this data from diverse input formats for easy access.This integration is also useful in fraud detection; companies can build a custom Application Program Interface for fraud analytics to inject specific data in time to make a decision, Bass explained.

Consultant firm pins enterprise cloud storage on HCI – TechTarget
TBConsulting started using hyper-converged infrastructure in 2013 for virtual desktops, and steadily grew its HCI footprint to embrace its private enterprise cloud storage strategy. That means the managed service provider has followed in lockstep with the technology's trajectory.
Phoenix-based TBConsulting provides managed services such as private clouds, disaster recovery, data management, virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and data center colocation. Its goal is to bring enterprise features to midsize customers, TBConsulting Director of Information Services Steve Walker said. Walker said the provider sets up private clouds to manage its customers' data or integrate the public cloud in a hybrid setup, and HCI helps it provide enterprise cloud storage.
Hyper-convergence caught Walker's attention when TBConsulting had a client that needed to scale virtual desktops quickly. Walker liked the idea of hyper-convergence as a base for VDI, and found Nutanix the most mature HCI vendor in the market.
Satisfied with its handling of VDI, TBConsulting expanded its Nutanix footprint to handle the bulk of its storage needs. A big piece of that was enterprise cloud storage.
"Early on, this hyper-convergence stuff was kind of like hocus pocus," Walker said. "Inside of 90 days, we were able to scale from 600 virtual desktops to over 4,000 virtual desktops in an incredibly complex and cumbersome environment. It was magical how quickly and easily we were able to accomplish that."
Before turning to Nutanix, TBConsulting used a three-tier architecture with EMC storage, Hewlett Packard Enterprise blade servers and Cisco unified computing system servers and networking. That setup struggled on the storage side when trying to keep up with hundreds of virtual desktops.
"Everybody has storage issues with VDI, and if you're still relying on a three-tier architecture, you are going to have issues," Walker said. "Data locality is tough with virtual desktops. If you're storing it on a SAN, your data is in the basement."
Nutanix and HCI were still new when TBConsulting signed on in 2013. The hosting provider has grown its HCI infrastructure along with Nutanix, adding the Nutanix Acropolis hypervisor for certain workloads, while sticking with VMware for most of its virtualization. Over time, TBConsulting's Nutanix footprint grew from 24 NX-3000 appliances to 162 nodes.
"All new concepts and all new platforms scare us, and hyper-convergence was no exception," Walker said. "There are always gotchas. We tell vendors, 'Give us the good, and be honest and tell us the bad. We don't want to find out the bad later.'
"Nutanix was open in what they can and cannot do. In our case, we used them for virtual desktops, and that's where they started and made a name for themselves. It was smooth adoption out of the gate. As they matured, they started to do other things well."
Walker said TBConsulting still has pieces of its three-tier architecture, but they are replaced as they move off of maintenance. The firm's latest additions include all-flash HCI appliances to increase performance. The Nutanix appliances reside in TBConsulting's Phoenix data center and a colocation data center in Las Vegas, replicating between the sites for data protection.
Nutanix also now underpins TBConsulting's private cloud service setup to increase utilization and security of customer data.
"One of the major benefits of hyper-convergence over the traditional three-tier architecture is the ability to grow and allocate resources to the right workload," Walker said.
"In a three-tier world, it's really tough to get capacity planning right, and it's frustrating to have to build silos. You're going to hit the ceiling, it doesn't matter what you use. Hyper-convergence takes away the ceiling from our ability to grow, without needing silos for each workload and each client. As a service provider, we can grow infinitely [with] this platform."
Walker said hyper-converged makes for easier management because TBConsulting no longer needs dedicated storage, server and networking IT people. They all get certified on a single platform.
Nutanix leadership talks a lot about becoming a private enterprise cloud storage option, and Walker is eagerly awaiting more advancement in that direction, such as the "ability to add failover and other native functionality for moving data. We don't want to have five software vendors that we layer on top of our platform."

Released in 2012, Google Drive is widely considered as the 2nd best cloud storage system, or the 2nd best known at the very least. This is in no small part due to its integration with the various services that Google also offers.
If you are a fan of Googles services, specifically Office Suite, then Google Drive should also be part of your tools as they benefit from each other. Thanks to this, its considered one of the more user-friendly cloud storage services available, and it can be expanded further with the use of other tools and plugins. However, this can also be a potential drawback. It requires you to trust Google to keep your data and confidentiality safe.
Supported systems for Google drive include Web, Mac, Windows, iOS and Android. The initial free storage is a decent 15GB, with the option to increase it to 100GB, 1 TB, 10 TB, 20 TB and 30 TB. This would be an advantageous cloud service for businesses.
OneDrive
For note-taking efficiency look no further than OneNote. OneNote is also completely free and doesnt have features locked out for free users. To make things better, every note is saved on OneDrive.
While initially it didnt bare the name of OneDrive, SkyDrive was its original name, Microsoft has launched its own cloud storage service in 2007. OneDrive doesnt have any significant bad parts to it, but its quite specific in its design and the situations where it would be recommended to use. The first one is where you are already using (and paying for) the Microsoft Office 365, being that OneDrive is included in the package. The second one is where you want to have more free storage but you want to avoid making use of Googles storage.
It is available for the Windows, Web, Android, iOS, Mac and Windows Mobile platforms and comes with an initial 5 GB of free storage. You can opt for an a 50GB or 1TB upgrade. You are limited to files no larger than 10 G and has real-time collaboration with the OneNote, Excel, PowerPoint and Word.

NVMesh enables customers to design server-based SAN infrastructures for the most demanding enterprise and cloud-scale applications, leveraging standard servers and multiple tiers of flash. The primary benefit of NVMesh is that it enables converged infrastructure by logically disaggregating storage from compute.
NVMesh features a distributed block layer that allows unmodified applications to use pooled NVMe storage devices across a network at local speeds and latencies. Distributed NVMe storage resources are pooled with the ability to dynamically create arbitrary virtual volumes that can be striped, mirrored, or both. Volumes can be spread over multiple hosts and utilized by any host running the NVMesh block client. NVMesh consists of four main software components: the NVMesh Target Module, the Topology Manager (TOMA), the Intelligent Client Block Driver, and the centralized management system.
The NVMesh Target Module identifies storage hardware, such as NVMe drives and compatible NICs, and sets up RDDA pathways into the NVMe drives on behalf of the storage clients. The module runs on target nodes, which are physical nodes containing non-volatile storage elements to be shared. Once the Target Module sets up the connections from clients to the NVMe drives, it steps back and hence is not in the data path. The Target Module is also involved in error detection and handling.
The Topology Manager, which comes bundled with the target module and runs on the same hardware elements, executes in user space and provides volume control plane functionality. TOMA tracks the activity of drives and storage target modules to maintain seamless volume activity upon element failure. Upon recognizing a failure, the topology manager performs the actions required to ensure data consistency. It also manages and engages in recovery operations upon element resumption or replacement.
The Intelligent Client Block Driver implements block device functionality for storage consumers. This software runs on client nodes. A host or node that has one or more NVMe devices to share and also participates as a client is called a converged node. Converged nodes run both the block storage client and the storage target module. If desired, the storage management module can also run on a client, target, or converged node.
The centralized management system provides, yes, configuration and monitoring functionality. In addition to a web GUI, it provides a RESTful API management interface for integration with data center management systems and orchestration mechanisms.
Being a true software-defined storage solution, NVMesh separates the control path and data path. Most of NVMeshs control path functionality is executed by the storage management modules, which avoid broadcasting management communications to ensure scalability. The control path functionality includes:
The data path serves the actual storage I/O operations, which are sent from the block storage client to the storage devices using several mechanisms. NVMe devices are accessed at local speeds using Exceleros patented RDDA protocol. Other target block devices, such as SATA SSDs, are accessed using standard RDMA queue pairs to interact with the storage target module that will subsequently perform the I/O operation. NVMf devices are accessed directly using the NVMf protocol.
Besides Exceleros RDDA protocol, NVMesh supports the open protocol NVMf as a wire transport. NVMf may be preferable from the standards perspective, but is less desirable in terms of performance overhead, as using it will require invocation of target side software (and CPU). RDDA typically provides better access latency without requiring target-side CPU usage.
Employing RDDA provides an immediate latency benefit of 10 microseconds (or more) compared to kernel-based NVMe-over-Fabrics (more on performance below). RDDA significantly reduces load on the target side by avoiding running the kernel software stack including potentially computationally expensive interrupt handling.
Lastly, NVMf is a low latency protocol for NVMe over a network fabricits not a storage solution. The NVMf client and target allow you to access drives remotely, but do nothing for adding redundancy, logical volumes, failover, or centralized monitoring and management.
A key benefit of RDDA is that it bypasses the CPU on targets. As a result, planning resource allocation for applications is simpler and more consistent. A second benefit is the ability to spread data across failure zones for high availability, which calls for distributed data layout. Client-side storage service implementation enables single hop data access also when the data is spread across disparate physical entities.
Excelero NVMesh was designed to scale naturally. Targeting larger data centers with upwards of 100,000 converged nodes, NVMesh was designed to avoid any centralized capability in the data path that could become a bottleneck. This means no centralized metadata or lock management. Client, target, and management functionalities are built as scale-out technologies as well. Because it is critical to ensure that the networking pattern supports web-scale deployments, clients are completely independent. Knowledge sharing among clients is rare and occurs indirectly and anonymously via targets. Client independence ensures easy client scaling.
Storage targets communicate only with other targets that are protecting the same data. Volumes are spread out in a way that minimizes the amount of such communication. In contrast, other products spread the volumes in a way that has every node mirroring something from every other node. Typically, a target will have to communicate with only a handful of other nodes, even in a large-scale environment, due to this volume allocation strategy.
Further, cross-target communication is limited to keep-alives, quorum communication, and rebuilds.Data protection is done by the clients themselves, with the number of elements participating in data protection of any specific stored data element limited to reduce system chatter and enable wide scaling.
Centralized management is comprised of a stateless web serving framework (Node.js) and a transactional, scale-out data store (MongoDB) on the back end. This ensures that the management framework has the required scale-out and failover characteristics to support the largest data centers.
The client-target communication pattern rests on the intelligence of the Intelligent Client block driver. Clients know to approach the correct group of targets thereby reducing both the number of network hops and the number of communication lines. The result is that the number of connections is a small multiple of domain size.
The performance of storage systems is influenced by many elements, including the storage hardware components, the servers, the network, and the efficiency of the software. NVMesh was designed to let applications enjoy the full performance, capacity, and processing power of the underlying servers and storage. The software was designed to add virtually no latency and not impact the target CPU. As NVMesh is a pure software-defined storage solution, performance varies with choices made by the customer. The system generated 2.5M IOps for 4KB random writes and 4.5M IOps for 4KB random reads. Random write average response time was less than 350 microseconds and the random read average response time was 227 microseconds. During the 4.5M IOps random read benchmark, the storage target CPU was at 0.3 percent utilization (mostly running Linux services to display process status).
