PTP weighs in on cost optimization and partnership with Spot by … – SiliconANGLE News
Amid talk of a recession, there are other areas in tech where theres actually a tailwind the growth of artificial intelligence and open-source software among them.
Theres also a lot more cloud action happening, with more data coming in. In that way, a trend of rightsizing makes sense as a natural evolution of the next-generation cloud. How are companies seeing things as they seek to get their house in order, moving from being a janitor custodian toward operationalizing some of the mechanics and key performance indicators needed to scale cloud automation being among them?
We were leading with a cost optimization story over the last couple of years, and it really sort of fell on deaf ears. It wasnt a great conversation piece, said Ethan Simmons(pictured), managing partner of Pinnacle Technology Partners Inc., whichhelps companies accelerate development in cloud environments. Starting last fall, we had more and more customers coming to us saying, Hey, I remember when you guys were talking to us about how we can save some money in AWS. How do we do that?
Simmons spoke with theCUBE industry analyst John Furrier at the AWS Savings in the Cloud event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Medias livestreaming studio. They discussed PTPs relationship with Spot by NetApp and the growth of AI. (* Disclosure below.)
If you try to do manually what Spot does, Spot and CloudCheckr together, if you were to try to do that manually, it would be an impossible task to do in real time, Simmons said. Having that automated, AI approach to cost optimization really takes a lot of the legwork out of doing the manual piece of cost optimization.
For PTP, it was a two-pronged approach. The company was using CloudCheckr for its traditional services and was heavily using Spot by NetApp for its AWS Reserved Instances management capabilities, Simmons explained.
Now, those tools are merging together. So its nice to have one tool rather than managing two. Our managed services team sort of has tool fatigue at times, where they have all these different tools to manage, he said. Its nice to bring that into one platform going forward. But, I still think, from a customer standpoint, they dont want to go out and buy these tools. They dont have the staff to use them and learn them. So, again, I think for us, its a great opportunity for more managed services.
Given the advent of AI, there are likely to be more cost management challenges in the future. Theres also the human capital side of things, where automation is really going to augment several areas. So, whats PTPs vision for the future, as automation takes things into the next wave of AI and data?
Youve seen a lot of enhancements to cloud storage, S3, with auto-tiering and moving stuff faster off to cold storage, and more intelligence tiering of storage, Simmons said. With the LLM, the large language model, all this data now needs to be in hotter storage. Thats whats driving a lot of the costs where these algorithms need quicker access to data.
Its really about that intelligence built into the storage to have it in the right place, at the right time, according to Simmons. In addition to that, its about trying to do it as efficiently as possible. PTPoften works with customers who are scientists or bioinformaticians individuals who dont want to spend their money on IT.
Theyre trying to find a cure for cancer or for a disease, and their goal isnt to spend money on IT or to worry about IT infrastructure, and theyre really focused on time to value, Simmons said. How can I use the funding that we have in this startup phase, or seed round, or A Round of funding?
These customers are asking how they can get to a point where they can prove their science works, according to Simmons.Thats where the company is trying to help them get there faster.
The IT piece of it and the cost savings is interesting for us, but seeing the customer able to do their research faster is what really drives us and is an exciting part about what we do, he said.
Heres the complete video interview with Ethan Simmons, part of SiliconANGLEs and theCUBEs coverage of the AWS Savings in the Cloud event:

The stories your clothes could tell: How Ahluwalia and EON are … – Microsoft
Scanning your clothes to reveal their hidden stories, or immortalising the sound waves of your favourite songs in fabric might sound like the garments of the future, but these are just some of the ways that designer Priya Ahluwalia is harnessing technology to create the next generation of fashion.
In her Autumn/Winter 2023 collection, Symphony Unlocked, Ahluwalia aims to make garments traceable, intelligent, and interactive.
Symphony Unlocked was inspired by music and my relationship with music, explains Ahluwalia, founder and creative director of her eponymous fashion line. And the life cycle of clothes is, quite literally, woven into the fabric of Ahluwalias clothes.
Digital identifiers (or Digital IDs) powered by EONs Product Cloud platform, built on Microsoft Azure, provide each garment in Ahluwalias new clothing line with a unique personal fingerprint. These Digital IDs reveal the story of the items creation, the journey to your closet and the best way to care for it.
Music is woven into each piece, creating a story that is personal to me. Thanks to technology, you can hear that story for yourself and, I hope, feel a deeper sense of connection with the piece youre wearing.
In a panel hosted by Hypebaes editor, Navi Ahluwalia (no relation), Priya Ahluwalia was joined by Natasha Franck, founder and CEO of EON, and Maruschka Loubser, Microsofts Director of Global Brand Partnerships, to discuss the significance of connecting with customers through meaningful stories.
While Priya Ahluwalia confesses to being an analogue girl at heart, the pandemic served as a catalyst for integrating technology into her brand. As a creative, I really like doing things in analogue, whether its printing mood boards or drawing on paper. But Covid made me really think about technology and how it fosters connectivity. Suddenly we couldnt connect with customers or the community in the same way.
Covid restrictions shifted the launch for her second book, Jalebi, from an in-store event to a virtual experience, expanding its reach globally. It allowed the project to travel so much further. Everyone could view the exhibition and thats when I realised how tech can bring people along on the journey. Its amazing how far an idea can go with technology and thats what I love about it.
Inspired by the Jalebi launch, Ahluwalia was keen to explore more tech innovation. Having already had a partnership with Microsoft, EON a Microsoft for Startups alum seemed like the natural fit for a collaboration. Maruschka Loubser, describes the collaboration as a harmonious meeting of minds and values.
I was excited to bring two great partners together. One of the reasons I wanted to work with both EON and Ahluwalia is the alignment of values that they both stand for. Their innovation fuses what Microsoft aims to do in terms of empowering people through our technology; inspiring creativity and innovating for a better world.
As Natasha Franck explained: The Internet enabled us to buy fashion online, and now with IoT (Internet of Things), its integrating with physical products. This move connects billions of products to an intelligent and regenerative system, making IoT the link between people and products.
What sets this integration apart is the potential to unlock accountability across the fashion supply chain, solving a significant barrier to circularity, which Franck believes is product ID. Imagine trying to run a business without a barcode, she said. You cant manage assets that you cant identify.
Just as barcodes revolutionised businesses, digital product passports will require brands to disclose essential information like origin, production, materials, and sustainability details. By embracing IoT and digital IDs, Ahluwalias Symphony Unlocked collection sets a new standard for transparent and sustainable fashion practices.
Tech is seamlessly weaved into Ahluwalias collection by authentic storytelling, which she believes to be crucial when asking people to invest in products, especially in the realm of contemporary luxury.
I think people increasingly want the products they buy to have meaningful values behind them, she said. Ahluwalias experience has shown that storytelling is what resonates with her customers. Its clear from my brand that storytelling resonates. It gives people the opportunity to be connected to a world.
As a Londoner with Nigerian and Indian heritage, Ahluwalia is committed to promoting a diverse world through her stories. The stories I tell are about representation. That means a lot to people in an industry that has, until recently, not been very representative.
The result of her efforts is Symphony Unlocked, a culturally rich tapestry laid to the soundtrack of Ahluwalias life. Some pieces draw inspiration from vintage Indian sitar music, Nigerian musical instruments, album covers, music videos, the soundwaves of my favourite songs everything to do with world of music. Its never a literal interpretation but it might be the energy I get from it, the soundwave from a song, or the colours from an album cover.
The stories themselves are unlocked through digital technology. QR codes on the labels lead to exclusive content; customers can access behind-the-scenes details, interviews with the creative team, and sustainability information, ultimately fostering a personal connection with the garments they invest in.
The stories you see in the clothes arent obvious because I like things to be nuanced. Theres a lot of detail that someone who buys it might not be aware of. The technology enables people to find out the thinking behind each garment. Theres a reason why one of the wave prints is three centimetres and not four theres a lot of thought that goes into each piece.
Generally speaking, one of the most exciting aspects of digital ID is that the stories they represent can continue to be shared from one owner to the next. As Franck explained, It enables instant resale, contributing to a circular fashion economy.
She sees this as a tipping point for the fashion industry, where digital twins may have a cloud storage impact, but their contribution to sustainability outweighs the nominal storage cost. Thats another reason we chose Microsoft: their cloud storage is one of the most sustainable in the industry, Franck explained.
Symphony Unlocked is the culmination of months of hard work. Loubser describes it as piloting the art of what is possible with technology, within the fashion space. Our work empowers people to create their own solutions; we utilise AI and Azure Cloud to democratise technology, allowing everyone from small start-ups to big companies to achieve their vision.
Franck echoes this from her own experiences at EON. Adding new capabilities, such as streaming, becomes easier as leverage technologies that already exist. We dont need our own cloud or data storage centres as we can quickly build using Microsofts prebuilt tools.
Ahluwalia admits feeling daunted at the prospect of venturing into the digital sphere but emphasises the importance of a clear vision and strong partnerships. Tech can feel scary or intimidating when youre not in that space. Partnering with Microsoft and EON enabled us to innovate in spaces that were not typically in. For me and for my team, its important that we learn from other people.
As Loubser explained, the partnership was seamless. I think, partly because the EON technology already existed, we could move seamlessly to creative storytelling as well as the transparency and itemised level of information.
The challenge lies in finding a cohesive tone of voice and creative input for all three brands for an end product that is public facing, concedes Ahluwalia.
Panel attendees agreed that the messaging of the brand was clear to see. Fashion inclusive influencer, Arooj Aftab, said The language around sustainability and sustainable fashion is often confusing. The approach by Ahluwalia, EON and Microsoft makes it easier to understand and help clarify the nuances behind circular fashion.
Symphony Unlocked is the culmination of months of hard work but what is Priya Ahluwalias favourite piece from the collection? Looking at the rail of clothes from the vibrant Kiara dress to the colour blocked ruffle dress she gravitates toward the denim jumpsuit, the same one she is wearing on the night of the panel event.
The print on the denim features the sound waves from Whitney Houstons I Will Always Love You. It was the song that was playing when my mum gave birth to me.
The epitome of a life story woven into fabric.

DataCore reinvents itself with AI, containers, and edge-first strategy … – Blocks and Files
Analysis: DataCore is actively developing a platform that integrates block- and file-based storage across edge sites, datacenters, and the public cloud. It caters to various applications, including virtual machines, containers, media and entertainment, as well as AI.
DataCore is an established supplier in the field of software-defined storage, founded in 1998. The company has gained significant traction with its SANsymphony block storage, Swarm object storage (acquired from Caringo), and Bolt Kubernetes-orchestrated container storage (acquired from MayaData). Bolt has been notably involved in storage capacity bids reaching 100PB.
The business is well established, having traded profitably for 14 years. Its client base is robust, with strong ties to medium and small enterprises, as well as departmental and line-of-business applications in larger businesses. CEO Dave Zabrowski, who joined DataCore in 2018, plans to maintain this approach. His vision is to tap into larger enterprises through vertical market applications, thereby circumventing the need for CIO-level selling efforts.
DataCore also runs a division known as Perifery, which provides edge storage solutions. This division offers the Perifery archiving appliance and Transporter physical data transfer products. These products cater to vertical edge markets such as media and entertainment, and health and life sciences. The key goal is to integrate these products into workflows rather than selling them as standalone products.
Perifery also oversees the Swarm object storage product and the media and entertainment object storage supplier Object Matrix, which DataCore acquired in January. Currently, Perifery is working on an AI product designed to preprocess media content generated at the edge before it is transferred to the public cloud or a datacenter.
Zabrowski shared a hypothetical scenario where a surgeon is operating on a patient and a camera has taken images of polyps. These are tissue growths inside the body and could be benign, potentially cancerous or actually cancerous. The image is fed to a local server/workstation, where a machine learning inference system analyzes it and tells the surgeon what percentage of such polyps are, or could become, cancerous. In effect the ML inference software, operating at the edge, the hospital, gives the surgeon cut-it-out or leave-it-in information in real time.
We think that DataCores Perifery division could be developing AI stack infrastructure components that could help in such work.
DataCores focus has shifted from vFilo, its file storage software product, to object storage for managing unstructured data storage. Zabrowski has expressed confidence in Swarms technology for its superior scalability when compared to MinIO object storage.
To run DataCores software platform components on the edge, in datacenters, and the public cloud, containerization is necessary. However, Zabrowski has cautioned that it is not possible to containerize monolithic applications like SANsymphony without rewriting them. There are different considerations for distributed software like the acquired Caringo Swarm object storage, which will likely be containerized.
DataCores primary investor, Insight Partners, is a long-term stakeholder and, as Zabrowski states, is not looking to exit the investment soon. DataCore is a 25-year-old firm that is evolving to cater to an edge-led future. This evolution includes its division Perifery and AI applications that facilitate more processing at the edge.
The future of DataCore involves more than just providing storage. It aims to enable data and integrate it into workflows by facilitating data movement between workflow stages and manipulating and processing it for efficiency. This evolution will likely involve data transfer to datacenters and the public cloud for additional processing and long-term storage. In essence, DataCore aims to be a comprehensive data storage infrastructure supplier rather than just a provider of storage.

Its Memory Machine Cloud software enables users to submit jobs to the AWS cloud in a serverless way and have them run in EC2 Spot instances, with dynamically modified sizes as needed to economize on cloud resources. The Memory Machine Cloud Essentials edition is free and includes a WaveWatcher calculator to track cloud app carbon emissions of cloud apps so organizations can right size for a lower carbon footprint.
MemVerge COO Jon Jiang said: For companies focused on reaching carbon neutrality, real-time measurement of carbon emissions for each workload is an essential capability. The telemetry works hand-in-hand with real-time right sizing that has the potential to drive the emissions of datacenter servers down 10 percent industry wide.
Memory Machine Clouds latest release, v2.3, has the ability to put an app to sleep, then restart where you left off. MemVerge says that data scientists were faced with the choice of leaving their cloud instance running all night or shutting down and restarting their apps built with popular integrated development environments (IDE) like RStudio and Jupyter. Sleep and WaveRide from within an IDE.
The Memory Machine software now includes IDE Sleep and Wakeup widgets for popular IDEs such as RStudio that allow data scientists to put their apps to sleep or use WaveRider continuous right sizing from within RStudio.
A Memory Machine Cloud WaveWatcher service builds on its ability to track CPU, memory, network, storage IO usage by application, to calculate carbon emissions. The data can then be used by the WaveRider service to automatically right size resources and reduce CO2 footprint.
MemVerge has defined a three-step blueprint to lower cloud app carbon emissions. Step one is to migrate apps from your datacenters to the public cloud, AWS in this case. Thats because, according to GoClimate.com, the Kg CO2 / year / server for cloud servers is approximately half that of on-prem servers.
Step two is to track cloud app carbon emissions by using tools like the Memory Machine Cloud WaveWatcher service. This profiles app resource usage and identifies opportunities for right-sizing optimization, such as enabling automatic runtime workload moves to smaller or larger instances based on their real-time resource needs.
Step three is to do this right-sizing continuously. It will cost though, as you have to upgrade from the free Memory Machine Cloud Essentials to Memory Machine Cloud Pro to get WaveRider continuous right sizing. This is charged on a 25 percent of savings pay-as-you-go basis.
This looks interesting but is limited to AWS. We think that his limitation may be removed by MemVerge in the future. Also there are no examples of saved carbon emissions by named applications, which is a pity. The chart above does show some generic type savings but there are no details. No doubt the MemVergers will produce them soon enough.

Backblaze warns of AI-assisted cyber threats Blocks and Files – Blocks and Files
Humans are often the weakest link in a corporate network and the entry point for ransomware attackers, a factoid that underscores the necessity for persistent vigilance against this growing cyber threat.
A stark reminder of this was today presented by cloud storage provider Backblaze in its 2023 Complete Guide to Ransomware report. The latest edition of this annual report states:
This years most important update has been the rise of generative AI for increasingly sophisticated, automated phishing attempts Text generated by models like ChatGPT help cybercriminals create very personalized messages that are more likely to have the desired effect of getting a target to click a malicious link or download a malicious payload.
Traditionally, phishing messages were relatively easy to identify, often featuring spelling errors, grammatical mistakes, and awkwardly constructed sentences. With the aid of software like ChatGPT, however, criminals can enter a prompt to quickly receive error-free, well-written, and convincing copy that can be immediately used to target victims.
The report provides a comprehensive review of ransomwares prevalence, attack vectors, the sequence of events during an attack, and the necessary steps for responding to an attack. It stops short of suggesting foolproof methods to prevent attacks from breaching IT infrastructure, as no solution that is 100 percent reliable exists.
The best measures involve proactive steps: ensuring robust IT user education and having an efficient recovery system in place to restore encrypted files from uncorrupted backups. If sensitive data has been exfiltrated, however, the options are limited.
Malware attack vectors can be either human or machine-mediated, each designed to deliver malware into IT systems, encrypting files or copying them for transmission to attacker HQ. Victims someimes pay a ransom, often in cryptocurrency, to decrypt their files or prevent widespread distribution.
The caveat, of course, is that dealing with cybercriminals doesnt guarantee a successful outcome even after paying a ransom. Backblazes report warns: Paying the ransom only encourages attackers to strike other businesses or individuals like you. Paying the ransom not only fosters a criminal environment but also leads to civil penalties and you might not even get your data back.
Victims should report attacks to the appropriate authorities. If data has been encrypted, its recommended to recover it using clean backups. Increased vigilance in protecting sensitive data and transparent communication with potentially impacted parties is advised.
Preventing malware infiltration into systems requires a comprehensive approach. Backblaze recommends several protective measures such as to restrict write permissions on file servers as much as possible. In addition to this, we would suggest restricting file movement permissions to prevent sensitive data from leaving the boundaries of your IT system.
Modern IT security strategies increasingly adopt a zero-trust model no person, device, or service requesting data access is automatically trusted, but must be validated every time, even for repeat requests. This principle should also extend to file egress destination devices, given the risk of trusted services unintentionally transferring sensitive files to an unsecured location, as in the case of Fortra or MOVEit.
The 2023 Complete Guide to Ransomware report is accessible on Backblazes website through its blog page.

Gartner storage hype cycle has selective memory Blocks and Files – Blocks and Files
Comment: Research house Gartner has published its 2023 storage hype cycle, highlighting the evolving landscape of various technologies in the industry, and some have dropped completely out of sight.
The hype cycle serves as a five-stage technology progression chart, starting with an Innovation Trigger phase, followed by a Peak of Inflated Expectations, a Trough of Disillusionment, a Slope of Enlightenment, and finally reaching a Plateau of Productivity.
Gartner Research VP Julia Palmer, who shared the update on LinkedIn, said: Its like having a roadmap to navigate through the hype and identify the most promising innovations. You need to log into a Gartner account to see it in detail. Here we present a screen grab of the highlights:
Technologies on the chart are represented by dot colors: dark blue indicates 5 to 10 years to reach the plateau, light blue represents two to five years, and a white dot indicates less than two years to plateau.
Upon initial analysis, some placements seem unusual. For instance, NVMe-oF should likely be positioned further to the right, and the positions of object storage and Distributed File Systems could potentially be exchanged.
Flash Memory Summit organizer Jay Kramer pointed out some notable omissions from the chart, including Storage Class Memory, Multi-Cloud, and Converged Infrastructure. Heres last years storage hype cycle chart:
Storage Class Memory was rising up the Slope of Enlightenment in 2022 but faced setbacks after Intel discontinued Optane. However, technologies like SCM-class SSDs, MRAM, and RERAM continue to be developed. Notable trends from last years storage hype cycle include the disappearance of Copy Data Management, Enterprise Information Archiving, Persistent Memory DIMMs, and Management Software-Defined Storage.
Hybrid Cloud File Data Services have come from nowhere and are now descending the Trough of Disillusionment. There is no entry for CXL, which is expected to play a significant role in storage products. Additionally, we believe that Data Orchestration and SaaS Application Backup deserve a place on the chart.
While the storage hype cycle can be an intriguing insight into the industrys evolving landscape, it should perhaps be regarded as a fun and less formal representation of the markets evolution.
