Pogoplug offers unlimited cloud storage for $5 a month
In what may be an industry first, a cloud services firm is offering unlimited storage for less than $5 a month.
The new Pogoplug plan went live last week and lets users save files to the cloud that they can then access from any device. Cloud Engines CEO Dan Putterman said there is no limit to the devices on which you can access or save files.
Pogoplug's plan is unique in that no other service offers so much space for so little without some sort of limitation.
Other companies offer unlimited cloud storage but tend to have restrictions. Some limit the number of computers you can back up, restrict how many files you can store or ask to use the excess space on your hard drive for their network of cloud storage. Pogoplug will simply bill you once a month and let you have at it.
Putterman said the company's proprietary technology, which was developed over the last five years, and declining cost of hosted storage have made the lower price possible.
"We're passing on the economic benefits to our customers," he said.
On Mac or PC computers, users can access their files through Pogoplug's website or a client that will continuously sync up files to the cloud similar to what Dropbox does. There are also apps that can be used for the iPhone, iPad and Android devices.
Notable competitors offer similar-priced plans but not nearly as much storage.
Cloud company Dropbox, for example, will give you 100 gigabytes of storage for $9.99 a month or $99 a year. Box, meanwhile, will give individual users 25 GB for $9.99 a month.
Apple's iCloud offers 25 GB of total storage for $40 a year, Microsoft's SkyDrive will give you 107 GB for $50 a year, Amazon will give you 100 GB for $50 a year, and with Google Drive you can get 100 GB for $4.99 a month.

Microsoft Buys StorSimple for Enterprise Cloud Storage
The enterprise cloud storage wars are heating up.
Microsoft is acquiring StorSimple, a maker of appliances that link on-premise storage and public clouds, treating the latter as an integrated storage tier with automated data management. The deal's terms are being kept under wraps.
The buy helps align the company's Windows Server and Azure cloud services ecosystems with the burgeoning Cloud-integrated Storage (CiS) market, according to Microsoft. Primary benefits for customers include seamless, low cost remote backup, disaster recovery and data protection for Windows environments, says Microsoft's Michael Park, corporate vice president of the Windows Server and Management Product Marketing Group.
Park explains in a Windows Azure blog post, "CiS is a rapidly emerging category of storage solutions that consolidate the management of primary data, backup disaster recovery and archival data, and deliver seamless integration between on premise and cloud environments."
And while there currently exist third-party solutions that connect Windows Server and Azure, Microsoft hints that integrating technology from StorSimple -- a Top 10 storage startup last year -- will provide an inherently more native data management environment for administrators.
"StorSimple's approach of seamless integration of on-premises storage with cloud storage is clearly aligned with our Cloud OS vision. Their innovative solutions enable IT organizations to reduce the cost of storing data for backup, DR and archival and ensure fast recovery through a single console," adds Park.
Increasingly, cloud-connected data center systems are emerging as a vital linchpin in the enterprise cloud landscape. In the face of stiff competition, primarily from Amazon, the StorSimple buy allows Microsoft to position Azure as a stronger contender in the large-scale cloud storage market.
According to IT analysts at Stifel Nicolaus, the deal is also indicative of Microsoft's increasingly aggressive posture in the cloud computing realm.
"We see Microsoft's cloud storage moves as becoming increasingly aggressive, in which we would also include the recent announcement that Microsoft is fully integrating CommVault's Simpana 9 data and information management platform within the Microsoft Cloud OS including Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V and Windows Azure (e.g., enablement of live VM migration from data centers and into Azure, as well as the ability to leverage Azure cloud as a retention tier and an alternative to tape-based backups)," wrote Stifel Nicolaus analysts Aaron C. Rakers and Joe Quatrochi in a research note.

Microsoft Buys StorSimple for Enterprise Cloud Storage
Microsoft Acquires Leader In Cloud-integrated Storage
October 17, 2012
Michael Harper for redOrbit.com Your Universe Online
Everyone is moving to the cloud these days, and Microsoft is no exception. Of course, theyve been in the cloud for some time now with their Azure infrastructure, but yesterday the Redmond company took their offerings one step further, opening up opportunities for a new kind of customer. In addition to offering a cloud-based platform with Azure, Microsoft now plans to persuade large enterprises to store their data in the cloud, thanks to their latest acquisition: StorSimple.
Microsoft announced the deal yesterday without disclosing any financial details, saying they wanted to help customers more efficiently embrace hybrid cloud computing.
Customers faced with explosive growth in data are looking to the cloud to help them store, manage and archive that data, explained Michael Park, corporate vice president of servers and tools at Microsoft in the press release.
But, to be effective, cloud storage needs to integrate with ITs current investments. StorSimples approach helps customers seamlessly integrate on-premises storage with cloud storage through intelligent automation and management.
The 3-year old StorSimple began shipping their racks to customers this spring. StorSimples approach to cloud storage is a simple one. Customers buy the racks and backup all of their data to them, leaving the primary copy onsite. These racks then automatically archive the data and send a copy to the cloud, not only creating a redundant backup but also moving this backup offsite. Therefore, in the case of disaster, its very likely a company will still have complete access to their data.
Mike Volpi, an investor with Index Ventures, has been working as an advisor to StorSimple since the beginning. He explains StorSimples operation to Venture Beat this way: The StorSimple device sits in between the cloud storage infrastructure and its applications, and makes it look like they are talking to a local disk.
While in the cloud, StorSimple works with several other cloud-based services, such as Amazon, Google, Rackspace and even Microsofts Azure. According to StorSimple, bringing their technology and hardware to Microsofts team made sense, considering their customers choices in cloud services.
Most StorSimple customers are mainstream IT organizations that have chosen Windows Azure as their primary cloud. We are excited to continue to work with Microsoft and bring the combined benefits of StorSimple and Windows Azure to customers around the world, said Ursheet Parikh, co-founder and CEO, StorSimple in the press release.

Microsoft Acquires StorSimple To Increase Cloud Storage Capabilities
StorSimple, founded three years ago by Ursheet Parinhk and Guru Pangal of Cisco Systems (Nasdaq: CSCO), boosts Microsofts cloud-based platform Azure against steep competition from rivals likes Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) and Rackspace Hosting (NYSE: RAX). Those companies hold the advantage of being first movers in a new market the ever-ambitious tech giant is now trying to enter.
Microsoft already is a partner with StorSimple, and acquiring the specialized company allows Microsoft to poach its top talent as it expands its new service. StorSimple is also currently partnered with Amazon, so the acquisition may help Microsoft lure that same talent away from its competitor.
In both companies statements, no details were provided about any future changes to StorSimples partnership with Amazon.
Looking back over the last three and half years, after long nights and days of innovation, and early customer deployments followed by mainstream enterprise adoption, it became clear that the combination of StorSimple and Windows Azure delivers a best in class cloud-integrated storage solution that enables customers to use public cloud services as a seamless extension of their IT infrastructure, a company blog post from StorSimple said. The result is that a wide range of customers from non-profit organizations to Fortune 500 companies and government agencies have adopted this solution at an amazing rate.
Like Microsofts recent announcement of its new Xbox Music service, the advantage cloud storage offers a large tech company with so many product lines is that it encourages any potential customer -- be it a potential Windows Phone 8 buyer, someone curious about the new Surface tablet, or just a PC user hoping to upgrade to the new Windows 8 operating system -- to naturalize themselves to Microsofts entire ecosystem.
Customers faced with explosive growth in data are looking to the cloud to help them store, manage and archive that data, Microsofts corporate vice president of server tools said in a statement. But, to be effective, cloud storage needs to integrate with ITs current investments. StorSimples approach helps customers seamlessly integrate on-premises storage with cloud storage through intelligent automation and management.
Microsoft shares fell slightly on Tuesday, closing at $29.49.
