What is Cloud Storage? – Cloud Storage – AWS
Cloud storage has several use cases in application management, data management, and business continuity. Lets consider some examples below.
Traditional on-premises storage solutions can be inconsistent in their cost, performance, and scalability especially over time. Analytics demand large-scale, affordable, highly available, and secure storage pools that are commonly referred to as data lakes.
Data lakes built on object storage keep information in its native form and include rich metadata that allows selective extraction and use for analysis. Cloud-based data lakes can sit at the center of multiple kinds of data warehousing and processing, as well as big data and analytical engines, to help you accomplish your next project in less time and with more targeted relevance.
Backup and disaster recovery are critical for data protection and accessibility, but keeping up with increasing capacity requirements can be a constant challenge. Cloud storage brings low cost, high durability, and extreme scale to data backup and recovery solutions. Embedded data management policies can automatically migrate data to lower-cost storage based on frequency or timing settings, and archival vaults can be created to help comply with legal or regulatory requirements. These benefits allow for tremendous scale possibilities within industries such as financial services, healthcare and life sciences, and media and entertainment that produce high volumes of unstructured data with long-term retention needs.
Software test and development environments often require separate, independent, and duplicate storage environments to be built out, managed, and decommissioned. In addition to the time required, the up-front capital costs required can be extensive.
Many of the largest and most valuable companies in the world create applications in record time by using the flexibility, performance, and low cost of cloud storage. Even the simplest static websites can be improved at low cost. IT professionals and developers are turning to pay-as-you-go storage options that remove management and scale headaches.
The availability, durability, and low cloud storage costs can be very compelling. On the other hand, IT personnel working with storage, backup, networking, security, and compliance administrators might have concerns about the realities of transferring large amounts of data to the cloud. For some, getting data into the cloud can be a challenge. Hybrid, edge, and data movement services meet you where you are in the physical world to help ease your data transfer to the cloud.
Storing sensitive data in the cloud can raise concerns about regulation and compliance, especially if this data is currently stored in compliant storage systems. Cloud data compliance controls are designed to ensure that you can deploy and enforce comprehensive compliance controls on your data, helping you satisfy compliance requirements for virtually every regulatory agency around the globe. Often through a shared responsibility model, cloud vendors allow customers to manage risk effectively and efficiently in the IT environment, and provide assurance of effective risk management through compliance with established, widely recognized frameworks and programs.
Cloud-native applications use technologies like containerization and serverless to meet customer expectations in a fast-paced and flexible manner. These applications are typically made of small, loosely coupled, independent components called microservices that communicate internally by sharing data or state. Cloud storage services provide data management for such applications and provide solutions to ongoing data storage challenges in the cloud environment.
Enterprises today face significant challenges with exponential data growth. Machine learning (ML) and analytics give data more uses than ever before. Regulatory compliance requires long retention periods. Customers need to replace on-premises tape and disk archive infrastructure with solutions that provide enhanced data durability, immediate retrieval times, better security and compliance, and greater data accessibility for advanced analytics and business intelligence.
Many organizations want to take advantage of the benefits of cloud storage, but have applications running on premises that require low-latency access to their data, or need rapid data transfer to the cloud. Hybrid cloud storage architectures connect your on-premises applications and systems to cloud storage to help you reduce costs, minimize management burden, and innovate with your data.
Because block storage has high performance and is readily updatable, many organizations use it for transactional databases. With its limited metadata, block storage is able to deliver the ultra-low latency required for high-performance workloads and latency sensitive applications like databases.
Block storage allows developers to set up a robust, scalable, and highly efficient transactional database. As each block is a self-contained unit, the database performs optimally, even when the stored data grows.
With cloud storage, you can process, store, and analyze data close to your applications and then copy data to the cloud for further analysis. With cloud storage, you can store data efficiently and cost-effectively while supporting ML, artificial intelligence (AI), and advanced analytics to gain insights and innovate for your business.

Understand Firebase Security Rules for Cloud Storage | Firebase Storage
Traditionally, security has been one of the most complex parts of appdevelopment. In most applications, developers must build and run a server thathandles authentication (who a user is) and authorization (what a user can do).Authentication and authorization are hard to set up, harder to get right, andcritical to the success of your product.
Similar to how Firebase Authentication makes it easy for you to authenticate yourusers, Firebase Security Rules for Cloud Storage makes it easy for you to authorize usersand validate requests. Cloud Storage Security Rules manage the complexity for you byallowing you to specify path based permissions. In just a few lines of code, youcan write authorization rules that restrict Cloud Storage requests to acertain user or limit the size of an upload.
The Firebase Realtime Database has a similar feature, calledFirebase Realtime Database Rules
Knowing who your users are is an important part of building an application, andFirebase Authentication provides an easy to use, secure, client side only solutionto authentication. Firebase Security Rules for Cloud Storage ties in to Firebase Authenticationfor user based security. When a user is authenticated with Firebase Authentication, the request.auth variable in Cloud Storage Security Rules becomes an object thatcontains the user's unique ID (request.auth.uid) and all other userinformation in the token (request.auth.token). When the user is notauthenticated, request.auth is null. This allows you to securely controldata access on a per-user basis. You can learn more in theAuthentication section.
Identifying your user is only part of security. Once you know who they are, youneed a way to control their access to files in Cloud Storage.
Cloud Storage lets you specify per file and per path authorizationrules that live on our servers and determine access to the files in your app.For example, the default Cloud Storage Security Rules require Firebase Authentication inorder to perform any read or write operations on all files:
You can edit these rules by selecting a Firebase app in the Firebase consoleand viewing the Rules tab of the Storage section.
Firebase Security Rules for Cloud Storage can also be used for data validation, includingvalidating file name and path as well as file metadata properties such ascontentType and size.

Uploads and downloads | Cloud Storage | Google Cloud
This page discusses concepts related to uploading and downloading objects. Youcan upload and store any MIME type of data up to 5 TiB in size.
You can send upload requests to Cloud Storage in the following ways:
Single-request upload. An upload method where an object is uploadedas a single request. Use this if the file is small enough toupload in its entirety if the connection fails.
Resumable upload. An upload method that provides a more reliabletransfer, which is especially important with large files. Resumable uploadsare a good choice for most applications, since they also work for small filesat the cost of one additional HTTP request per upload. You can also useresumable uploads to perform streaming transfers, which allows you to uploadan object of unknown size.
XML API multipart upload. An upload method that is compatible withAmazon S3 multipart uploads. Files are uploaded in parts and assembled intoa single object with the final request. XML API multipart uploads allow you toupload the parts in parallel, potentially reducing the time to complete theoverall upload.
Using these basic upload types, more advanced upload strategies are possible:
Parallel composite upload. An upload strategy in which you chunk afile and upload the chunks in parallel. Unlike XML API multipart uploads, parallel composite uploads use the compose operation, and thefinal object is stored as a composite object.
Streaming upload. An upload method that lets you upload data withoutrequiring that the data first be saved to a file, which is useful when youdon't know the final size at the start of the upload.
When choosing whether to use a single-request upload instead of a resumableupload or XML API multipart upload, consider the amount of time that you'rewilling to lose should a network failure occur and you need to restart theupload from the beginning. For faster connections, your cutoff size cantypically be larger.
For example, say you're willing to tolerate 30 seconds of lost time:
If you upload from a local system with an average upload speed of 8 Mbps, youcan use single-request uploads for files as large as 30 MB.
If you upload from an in-region service that averages 500 Mbps for its uploadspeed, the cutoff size for files is almost 2 GB.
All downloads from Cloud Storage have the same basic behavior: anHTTP or HTTPS GET request that can include an optional Range header, whichdefines a specific portion of the object to download.
Using this basic download behavior, you can resume interrupted downloads, andyou can utilize more advanced download strategies, such assliced object downloads and streaming downloads.
If you use REST APIs to upload and download, see Request endpoints fora complete discussion on the request endpoints you can use.

Zoolz interview: BIGMIND, cloud storage, and the future – IT PRO
Zoolz is a cloud storage solution that boasts an impressive amount of storage, powerful data encryption, and an unlimited number of users. In other words, its one of the best cloud storage solutions available today for businesses of all sizes. Its BigMIND platform leverages powerful AI to provide a complete cloud storage solution to businesses and enterprises.
We were able to catch up with Zoolz CEO, Muayyad Shehadeh. An award-winning and globally recognised authority on cloud storage, Muayyads insightful responses and commentary on the cloud storage industry make this interview a must-read. Plus, find out how the company weathered the COVID-19 pandemic, and whats on the horizon.
Genie9 by Zoolz was set up in mid-2005 as a home-based cloud-local backup solution, and over time it evolved into a hybrid and full cloud, mobile backup, and multi-tenant reseller system. When we initially started, people used to back up their laptops to an external drive, so we addressed the problem by launching two powerful products.
The first launched product was Genie Backup Manager Pro 9.0, which backs up all your files to CD/DVD/Blu-ray, FTP/FTPS, Amazon S3, and external and network locations. Its very good for scheduling and scripting. The second product was Genie Timeline Professional 10, which is a simple, easy to use, continuous backup for all your files to external drives or network locations.
As the market needs evolved more towards business solutions, what were originally home-based products expanded into a full front- and back-end system. The company reached 70 employees, all highly qualified programmers and engineers in the cloud software industry.
Nowadays, BigMIND focuses on building strong partnerships, expanding its multi-tenant systems, and telecoms. It positions itself as a market-leading provider of cloud-based storage, a very affordable and secure cloud solution for businesses and individuals.
BigMINDs AI addresses the business problem of having masses of unstructured data scattered across desktops, laptops, and mobile devices. With no time and inadequate security measures to protect these valuable data assets, Genie9 decided to create a solution that can not only organise your data but protect it with military-grade encryption.
The user experience is innovative and focused on simplicity, so you will be able to back up and access big data quickly and smoothly. BigMIND also provides complete white-label solutions for service providers, so they can make a profit reselling the product as if it were their own. Thats why more than three million users across the world count on BigMIND.
Its difficult to pick just one, as we have had many successes to be proud of over the years! For me, the triumphs that stand out the most are when, despite a lot of challenges, BigMIND entered the cloud backup sector and truly turned it on its head in a positive way.
With a huge amount of collective effort, we expanded the company to different countries, reaching an impressive growth curve. The company has gone from zero to 25 countries, and six global data centers protecting over five million users in more than 143 countries worldwide, since its inception six years ago, and has launched a suite of top-notch cloud products along the way.
With coverage across 157 countries, our partnerships expand consistently to utilise BigMINDs latest AI and complete cloud backup technology, working with companies such as Canon, Dell, Benefit Japan CO Ltd, Acer, and EarthLink. Some of our big customers are Duracell, Steve Madden, Harvard Library, Endeavour Mining, West Medical, UTLX: the tank car people, and Open Colleges.
In fact, we pride ourselves on our partnerships, and one of our top prestigious global partners, AOS Data Co. Ltd., a member of the BigMIND Partner Program based in Japan, won the world-renowned IT Grid Review Award Winter 2021.
The company is using BigMINDs cutting-edge cloud backup technologies that can maintain the optimum environment even after installation with efficient restoration function and full support, comprehensively protecting customers data assets [from dangers] such as leakage, loss, and natural disasters.
Furthermore, AOS Data Co. Ltd. has helped us to increase our market share in Japan tremendously, and we are continuously working with more partners to expand in South America and the Far East.
I think that it comes back to determination and drive, and the love for what we do!
One thing which has always helped me was to see in each challenge a blessing in disguise. Thus, at an early stage, when the competition was very high, prices went down, and the market changed, bringing in new opportunities. Moreover, we had to adapt rapidly to the new market conditions and change our business model, with a focus on AI technology like machine learning (ML) to weave intelligence and automation into our array of products.
This meant switching from home and business direct sales to multi-tenant systems, which culminated with the launch of a new best-selling product. With the new future-proofed AI product, our team has embedded a free feature that uses artificial intelligence to help users discover photos by the objects that appear within them.
One of the latest top features introduces a powerful, accurate facial recognition and photodetection engine, which will keep all your photos organized and easily accessible.
One positive impact of the pandemic is the fact that it helped us to look at different sales channels, reduce costs, and restructure our internal operations, so we can adapt to remote working much faster and become more agile in the long run.
On the other hand, COVID-19 has impacted our sales both positively and negatively, as a few of the small and medium businesses that used our services tried to reduce their costs by cutting back on backup services, which wasnt really the right decision to take.
But on the other hand, larger companies increased their budgets when it came to data storage and protection, because of the increased risks remote working posed for their on-site data centers. As a consequence of this, we are changing our plans to be more adaptable and focused on multi-tenant systems instead of smaller businesses and home users.
One of the biggest market challenges is to figure out how to deliver advanced data protection and focus on disaster recovery, different types of mail backups, and VMs. Our future plans envisage a complete suite of backup disaster recovery solutions, VMs, mail recovery, and share points, which is one of our main competitive advantages in the long run.
Along the road to mobile data expansion, we have launched an all-in-one mobile cloud backup that gives you peace of mind by protecting your iPhone and Android data. Weve learned a couple of key principles that have helped us grow and continuously deliver new innovations for our customers.
Actually, we did take advantage of remote working, which meant that half of the team worked from home. At the same time, it helped us to go out of our comfort zone and hire more people from outside London. Also, we are looking at different efficient modalities to protect users, to use machines during disaster recovery, and eliminate the need for admins to adapt to remote working conditions.
We are looking at how we can grow more, double our sales by the end of 2022, and open new markets with our powerful multi-tenant system by focusing on emerging markets, like South America, the Far East, and India.
In the next one to two years, we will continuously be working on improving the users experience, as the demand in the market is now for a solution that accommodates the cloud backup needs of people working from the office and home.
One of our main priorities is to address the needs of users whose laptops may get corrupted, or who are victims of a ransomware attack. Hence, we want to save them time and eliminate the problem of slow repairs by offering them a secure, fully integrated cloud solution.
I believe that the cloud storage ecosystem will be using more and more of the latest tools in artificial intelligence to innovate and serve its customers with purpose. The cloud is changing for home users and business cloud services as data usage increases more, and there is a growing interest in mobile data protection.
Our team has identified a big need to address in terms of the data, and this versatile and highly scalable AI layer offered by BigMIND is meant to help make finding the data easier, and organise and structure it, no matter where people are.
BigMIND is breaking new ground by using complete data cloud backup combined with innovative AI technology patent-pending in the USA, allowing us to back up massive amounts of data at rates that are actually cheaper than Amazon, as we have zero restore costs. We are focused on providing seamless, future-proofed, world-class backup/recovery and business continuity for our customers.

IDrive Cloud Backup Rebrands Sync to Cloud Drive – Giving Users Access to all their Files in one Place from any Device – PR Newswire
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 5, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- IDrive Backup, an industry leading cloud backup provider, has announced the re-branding of their IDrive Sync feature to Cloud Drive, a service that enables users to sync files in real time across all their linked devices, access the files from anywhere, and share them with anybody.
Cloud Drive syncs all the devices linked to an IDrive account so when a file is updated, it is available on all of the linked devices. The moment a file is modified, the update syncs to the local drive of the computers on which Cloud Drive is active as well as to the cloud, letting users access the latest version of their files locally via a web browser, and download them using the IDrive mobile apps.
This is done by Cloud Drive creating a unique local folder on the computer where users add files to sync across devices in real time. Whenever a file is modified within this folder, the updates will reflect on all devices.
With data centers around the globe, including newly opened ones in Oregon and Ireland, users can be sure that no matter where they are the Cloud Drive functionality will work smoothly.
Users can sync files from the desktop app or mobile devices and access the files from Mac, PC, or via the web. They can also sync files directly from a web browser by signing into IDrive and simply dragging-and-dropping files to the sync folder. Users can also easily share the files with anybody via email.
Along with Cloud Drive, IDrive offers many other helpful features to make protecting files simple, affordable, and convenient, including:
The Cloud Drive storage does not impact your backup storage, and matches your backup storage limit.
