Report: Cloud adoption in broadcast continues to grow – Advanced Television

IABM has released two reports created by its Business Intelligence Unit: Cloud Adoption Trends, Manage and Support Content Chain Trends. Both reports are built from a combination of industry-wide qualitative and quantitative sources to provide an overview of current and future trends.

Here is a summary of their key findings:

Cloud Adoption Trends

Cloud adoption in broadcast and media continues to grow with most media businesses having adopted cloud technology; this was significantly accelerated by Covid.

Manage and Support Content Chain Trends

The Manage and Support segments of the BaM Content Chain are both seeing increased investment. The rapid move to the cloud, combined with the content and streaming boom and versioning for new markets, is increasing the requirement for efficiency and scalability, so driving growing demand for cloud-based, AI/ML powered MAM and orchestration solutions.

The move to the cloud, already underway but greatly accelerated by the Covid pandemic, is having a major impact right across the BaM Content Chain, said Lorenzo Zanni, IABMs Head of Knowledge. While it is potentially introducing a new level of complexity for media companies, technology suppliers are collaborating with end-users to provide innovative solutions that enable them to unlock the full potential of the cloud. In the Manage and Support segments of the content chain, these are concentrated on leveraging scalability and shared access, enabled by AI/ML-driven, automated workflows with increasing use of microservices.

Running out of laptop storage? Try these three solutions – ZDNet

Getty/Jay Yuno

Laptops are miracles of modern miniaturization. Unfortunately, that trend toward making things smaller applies to the system drive, too.

Even cheap laptops these days have solid-state drives, and because SSDs cost significantly more than conventional hard drives (and take up more precious real estate inside the laptop case), there's a powerful incentive on the part of PC makers to cut the price tag by offering options with smaller SSDs.

It's a false economy. That's why I've always recommended choosing the biggest storage option you can afford. You will probably regret the decision if you try to save a few dollars by skimping on the system drive.

So what do you do if you have an SSD that's too small for comfort? Ask yourself three questions to decide which option is best.

The easiest quick fix is to shift as many data files to the cloud as possible, using on-demand options like those available fromOneDriveandDropbox. (OneDrive calls this feature Files On-Demand; Dropbox calls it Online-Only, and offers it only for paid plans.) Using this feature lets you move all your data files to the cloud but still see them in File Explorer or the Mac Finder. Download only the files you need and keep everything else online, where it's available when you need it but doesn't use up storage space.

This option works best if you have at least 128 GB of storage on your system drive. On budget systems with 64 GB of storage, this strategy might still lead to times when available storage space is too tight for comfort.

In general, laptops aren't designed for expandability, which means you'll need expert help and the steady hands of a Swiss watchmaker just to open the case. And even then you might find that the system drive is soldered in place and can't be swapped out.

But it's worth checking your laptop model to be sure. Microsoft'sSurface Pro 8andSurface Pro X, for example, have a nifty little pop-up door that allows you to replace the system drive. (This option is also available on Surface Pro 7 models sold through business channels.) Some business-class models from other OEMs have system drives that can be replaced if you're willing to take the laptop apart to get to the drive slot (some models even have a second drive slot, so you can expand storage without losing your existing drive).

Replacement SSDs can be surprisingly economical. Just make sure you get a drive that is compatible with your system. (Some even come with backup software that allows you to transfer the contents of your current drive to the new one.)

I've successfully upgraded the drive on Dell laptops that only required removing a few screws on the bottom of the system to access the drive slots. I've also seen systems that required removing the keyboard and disconnecting multiple internal components to get to the drive bay, which is a much more challenging task.

You'll need to find the service manual for your laptop to see if expansion is an option. YouTube videos from other owners of the same model as yours can also be useful. If you're the DIY type, it's worth checking out.

If the cloud isn't practical and an upgrade isn't possible, external storage might be a useful alternative strategy.

Does your system have a slot for an SD or MicroSD card? You can add hundreds of gigabytes of storage for a pretty low price. That form factor is too slow to run apps from, but it's great for storing digital media and other data files. And it's extremely portable.

If you have a fast USB port (USB 3.0 or USB 3.1, which are now confusingly known as USB 3.2 Gen 1 and Gen 2, respectively), an external SSD might be a useful addition. This option can be fast enough to run programs; you can even install and run virtual machines from an external drive, as I do with an external SSD on a Thunderbolt port.

The downside is that this option makes your laptop considerably less portable. But if you mostly use your laptop at a desk, you can always connect an external SSD like theCrucial X6orSamsung T7. Those drives aren't terribly expensive, and they're fast enough to handle just about any task you throw at them.

Thank you for trying mediatech, I would rather buy yesterdays snapdragon SD chips over any high end mediatek stuff.

At $499, it's on the same level as the Google Pixel 6a.

Maybe if we had 512gb or 1tb base version on flagship, people would be more forgiving on the removal of micro sd. But guess what, we are "haters"

It's weird that people want 200M pixel sensors in between a tiny lens and tiny storage. Ask for more storage or clean sounding music playback quality and they laugh like you're being unreasonable. It's the pinnacle of marketing nonsense.

Then you have no choice. Find another phone, or pay higher to get what you want/need. I hope you can find one. Im sorry but truth hurts sometimes

Storage suppliers make the top 5000 US fastest-growing companies list Blocks and Files – Blocks and Files

Five storage suppliers have been ranked in the top 5000 list of North Americas fastest-growing companies: OwnBackup, Panzura, Komprise, SingleStore and OpenDrives.

Update. Panzura added to the list, 18 Aug 2022.

The Inc. 5000 is an annual report published by the Inc. business magazine and the 2022 edition ranked companies by revenue growth between 2018 to 2021. Inc. explains that the minimum revenue required for its list inclusion in 2018 is $100,000 and the minimum for 2021 is $2 million. Top-ranked BlockFi, a financial services business, achieved spectacular 245,616 percent revenue growth in the period. SnapNurse in second place grew at 146,319 percent. Third-ranked CDL 1000 attained 56,135 percent growth. The numbers decrease rapidly as we go down the ranks.

These are highly respectable numbers.

Panzura said it was growing at four times the rate of its nearest competitors within the survey period. CEO Jill Stelfox said: Joining the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing private companies in America is an honor. Our mission to provide every CIO with rock-solid security, complete visibility, and the advanced ability to put their data to work drives us each day.

Kumar Goswami, CEO and co-founder of Komprise, said he was incredibly humbled in a statement, and: Our rapid growth over the past few years speaks to real enterprise pains in managing data growth and discovering a frictionless, safe path to the cloud. Were excited to help our customers on the next stage of unstructured data management maturity by enabling automated workflows to move the right unstructured data into cloud AI/ML and other big data tools.

The lists overall median growth rate was 230 percent, but the median of the top 500 companies was 2,144 percent up from 1,820 percent for the 2021 list.

The Worldwide Insurance Network came in at 5,000 with 80 percent growth. Can we conclude that storage vendors that were not included in the Ince 5000 were excluded because they had less than 80 percent revenue growth from 2018 to 2021?

Inc, states: To qualify, companies must have been founded and generating revenue by March 31, 2018. They must be US-based, privately held, for-profit, and independent not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies as of December 31, 2021.

There is also a need to apply to Inc. for consideration as a listed business. Heres what Inc said about applying for the 2021 list: The application process is also simple: Input your contact information and a few company details, submit your revenue numbers, and finalize your payment. Once weve received your application, well ask you to verify your 2017 and 2020 revenue figures. Youll learn whether you made this years list by the end of July.

The application fee for the 2023 list is $195 not that much, but think about this: Ince made $975,000 just from the 5,000 successful applicants. If there were 5,000 unsuccessful applicants then it made $975,000 from them as well. (Ed Perhaps Blocks & Files should run an annual top 1,000 storage company growth ranking report. We could make hundreds of thousands of dream on.)

Our takeway is that companies in the list nominated themselves and paid Inc a small fee. Thus the Ince 5000 does not review all companies in the USA and rate their growth. We could conclude that storage companies not on the list simply did not bother applying rather than that they failed to pass the bar to get into the top 5000. Thats why we dont see companies like Weka and HYCU and many, many more in the list.

Bootnote

The top 500 companies are featured in the September issue ofInc.magazine, which will be available on August 23.

The 5 best dash cams of 2022 – ZDNet

Resolution:Up to 4K front, 1080p interior and rear | Night vision: Yes | Motion detection: Yes | Storage: Up to 256GB | Power source: 12V adapter | GPS: No | Viewing angle: 155 degrees front, 165 degrees interior, 160 degrees rear | Viewing location: Front, interior, rear

With three different cameras, the Vantrue N4 allows you to get almost 360 degrees of video coverage for your car while you drive. The main camera allows you to record the road in front of your vehicle as well as the interior, while the second camera can be mounted at the back of your car to record behind you. When used by itself, the front-facing camera can record up to 4K resolution at 30 frames per second for clean, smooth playback. And when used with the other two cameras, it still records in 1440p while the interior and rear cameras record in 1080p.

All three cameras are equipped with night vision for recording in the dark and motion detectors to capture video when they sense movement while the car is parked. The built-in G sensor automatically detects when you've been in an accident or when something hits your parked car, saving relevant recordings for evidence.

The Vantrue N4 supports microSD cards up to 256GB, allowing you to record up to 15 hours of video in 1440p; and the camera automatically overwrites the oldest file on the card for loop recording, so you don't have to worry about clearing out the microSD card. An optional GPS unit is available to buy, which lets the camera record routes and location information. That can be helpful for parents of new teen drivers as well as for anyone who needs to keep an eye on elderly family members, while still allowing them to have freedom.

It’s Not Just Ring. Google, SimpliSafe, and Others Could Share Video Footage With Police Without Consent. – Consumer Reports

A SimpliSafe spokeswoman, Amy Nagy, said: In our privacy policy we do reserve the right to share customer videos with law enforcement in times of extreme emergencies. Having this in our privacy policy does not change our practice of not sharing this data with law enforcement unless required to do so by law, or with user consent in most cases.

Googles policies similarly allow it to share video with law enforcement where there is user consent or a legal order, while D-Links and TP-Links policies will do so under legal orders. (Their documentation doesnt mention user consent.)

Nobody is telling Amazon, Google, Eufy, and others that theyre required to share user video with law enforcement, said Anna Bonesteel, strategic response manager for the privacy advocacy group Fight for the Future. The federal law cited by Google states that companies may disclose customer records without permission. It doesnt say they must.

But these companies are giving up private video to the police anywaywithout a warrant, without permission, and without notification," she added. Amazon Ring created the market for these every-household surveillance devices, so they arguably deserve the most blame for establishing industry-standard policies that circumvent our individual rights.

Greg Nojeim, senior counsel at the Center for Democracy and Technology, said the emergency exception outlined by ECPA isnt necessarily a bad thing, because there are noncriminal emergencies that could benefit from these disclosures.

Asked to describe a real-life scenario where these disclosures can be helpful, Nojeim said to imagine its 2 am and an elderly grandmother has wandered off. Her daughter calls the police, who want to check the homes security cameras to know when she might have left and which direction she headed. Theres no suspicion of crime, so it is not possible to get a warrant, and the camera account owner, the daughters husband, is out of town and cant be reached. In this case, the police would contact the camera maker, describe the emergency, and get disclosure of the footage under the emergency exception.

The trick is for providers to get it right and make sure the emergency exception in ECPA isnt being abused by law enforcement and used to circumvent the warrant requirements, Nojeim said.

Utilising Technology To Help Improve The Education Industry – MinuteHack

Today, the education industry is growing rapidly in terms of both student enrollment and job opportunities. Recent statistics show that the global education market will be worth $2.19 trillion by 2021, with projected annual growth rates of 5% for the next five years. The demand for well-educated workers is increasing across all industries.

As such, several companies have begun utilising technology to streamline processes and improve customer experiences related to education. Whether you're currently working in this field or looking to break into it, here are some ways that technology is improving the education sector as a whole:

Employee and Student Wellbeing

Health and wellbeing are becoming increasingly important issues in the workplace. In this line, many companies are now implementing programs to help increase productivity, reduce stress, and improve employee relationships. An example of this is the implementation of mindfulness programs, which have been shown to reduce employee burnout by an average of 43% while increasing productivity by 25%. Utilising school wellbeing software can help you improve staff and student wellbeing in real-time by collecting data regularly, allowing you to act upon the feedback.

These platforms allow users to create and manage online courses using AI, making it easier for organisations to manage their educational content. AI-based e-learning platforms can also be used to facilitate online courses.

This makes it easier for companies to provide online courses to learners while increasing the overall quality of these courses. AI-based e-learning platforms can be particularly beneficial to education. This is because they allow educators to create more engaging content while providing learners with a personalised experience.

Conclusion

The education industry is increasing, and all institutions are adopting new technologies. This has led to various benefits for students, educators, and employers. Technology is revolutionising the education sector from improving employee and student wellbeing to enhancing the quality and accessibility of educational content.
