Key considerations when planning to migrate to the cloud, part two – ITWeb
Being passionate about the cloud and the benefits it can bring to an organisations digital transformation journey, last month I shared part one of my views around important aspects to consider for a successful migration to the cloud.
In it, I addressed the need for clearly-defined business goals, spoke about the cloud migration strategy and the various cloud migration methods, and touched on the question around whether an organisation should outsource key IT functions to third-party experts or manage its IT infrastructure in-house.
In this second article, I share my views on some of the remaining considerations. So, to continue
Number four: Cloud migration framework
It is important to adopt a robust cloud migration framework which enables organisations to implement cloud migration in phases, making it easier to manage and control the project. The framework must include the following:
As-is IT landscape assessment to understand all existing workloads. Determine which workloads are still relevant, how much resources are allocated, are they efficiently used? Is the security in place adequate?
Cloud readiness assessmentassess cloud readiness of existing applications and data todetermine the level of complexity to migrate them to the cloud.
Legacy workload migrationnow the organisation is ready to perform the cloud migration. The public cloud platform chosen will influence the type of resources and skills required.Start by migrating a couple of workloads and ensure they work correctly in the new environment. Continue with this phased approach until all workloads are migrated.
Post-migration operations once the workloads have been migrated to the cloud, the process of decommissioning legacy systems can start.Involving in-house team members early on and throughout the project becomes important during this phase, to ensure that transitioning to the new modern operating modelis seamless. Performance of the cloud environment needs to be measured against set service level agreements and performance metrics with a view to optimise where requiredto ensure the business objectives are met in the new environment.
Number five: User adoption
Effective user adoption is critical for any successful cloud migration project. A change management strategy needs to be developed and should run throughout the project lifecycle to ensure users are on board with the new cloud implementation.
It is important to have leaders that are actively and visibly supporting the cloud migration project. This ensures commitment and shows a clear vision of the future and how the new changes will benefit the company.
It is important to adopt a robust cloud migration framework which enables organisations to implement cloud migration in phases, making it easier to manage and control the project.
For end-users, an organisation will need to clearly articulate how the new systems will benefit the end-user and how it will add value to their day-to-day work.
One way of achieving this is to develop a change programme that lays the foundation of how the implementation will go.
Below are five steps that need to be taken to ensure a successful change programme:
Clearly explain the need for change demonstrate to people why change is necessary and communicate both the potential benefits and the challenges the project may encounter and the plans to mitigate against them.
Plan for the change start the project with a solid plan. A detailed plan will help get buy-in from leaders and give all the role players a sense of accountability.
Implement the change assign the tasks according to the plan and kick-off the project.
Continuously review and modify implementation once the project is under way, track progress and make changes when necessary.
Communicate the progress communicate all project milestones as well as challenges. It is important to be transparent to gain trust.
Number six: Data security
The organisation needs to adopt data loss prevention (DLP) strategies that specifically deal with cloud data protection. Even though public cloud providers have robust security measures in place, it is important that the organisation is proactive about cloud security, privacy and data protection, and to ensure that sensitive data stored in the cloud is encrypted.
The biggest challenge in protecting cloud data is that data is stored in multiple places, such as cloud storage solutions like Amazon Web Services. The popularity of consumer cloud storage services like Dropbox and iCloud further compounds the problem that an organisation can be faced with. Even worse, this cloud data can be accessed anywhere, anytime using any network or devices which may or may not be secure.
There are two options for cloud DLP, namely cloud application API and cloud security access broker (CSAB). The advantage of using API is that developers are already familiar with programming APIs and can use them to implement security measures at the application level. However, application-level security is limited by the fact that most cyber attacks happen over APIs.
A CASB solution is a security tool that resides between a cloud service application and its end-users, enforcing organisational security policies and best practices, protecting against intrusions and preventing data leakage. An organisation can run CASBs on its on-premises infrastructure or in the cloud, and CASBs are easily integrated into existing on-premises DLP solutions. The organisation does not have to start from scratch as it can simply extend its existing DLP to the cloud if it already has one.
Regardless of the cloud DLP solution an organisation chooses, its important for DLP policies to be consistent. The same data policies that apply within the enterprise must also be enforced within the cloud.
Number seven: Cloud computing service models
There are three types of cloud computing service models, namely software-as-a-service (SaaS), platform-as-a-service (PaaS) and infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS). When embarking on a cloud journey, it is important to have a good understanding of these models and choose the one(s) suitable for the business use case.
SaaS is a licensing and software delivery model, which allows access to software on a subscription or pay as you use basis.
PaaS is a cloud computing model where a third-party provides, over the internet, a set of tools and services designed to make coding and deployment of applications quick and efficient.
IaaS is a cloud computing delivery model that provides cloud computing infrastructure servers, storage, network and operating systems as an on-demand service over the internet.
SaaS characteristics include:
PaaS characteristics include:
IaaS characteristics include:
In conclusion, when planning to migrate to the cloud, an organisation must have a clearly-defined use case that the cloud will satisfy. It is important to have a plan detailing the migration method and the process that will be followed.
To minimise risk of project failure, the organisation should consider partnering with cloud experts with a proven track record in cloud migration.

Govt employees banned from using VPN, Google Drive and other cloud services in India: heres why – 91mobiles
However, it should be noted the orders are solely designed for government employees and not regular internet users in the country. This is probably a move to safeguard the sensitive data present at the government offices.
The government of India has asked government employees must avoid using third-party VPN services and cloud storage options. The new restricted document highlights good and bad cybersecurity practices for government employees. Besides restricting access to cloud storage and CC(virtual private network) services, the order notes that employees should avoid third-party toolbars (weather toolbar, download manager, askme toolbar) on the internet browser.
Furthermore, government workers are also advised to stop downloading pirated software. Theyre also asked not to use any external email services for official communication and conduct sensitive internal meetings and discussions using unauthorised third-party video conferencing or collaboration tools.
In the previous order, CERT-IN, a department with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has mandated that VPNs operating in the country are required to store users records for five years. For those unaware, VPN allows users to mask their online identity and access banned websites anonymously. The government of India probably wants to end this anonymity and keep track of online activities, mainly illegal ones.

The Global Cloud API Market Is Witnessing High Demand Owing To the Increasing Adoption of Cloud-Based Computing Systems in the World, Key Players ...
Pure well-placed for hyperscale growth Blocks and Files – Blocks and Files
Pure Storage has a potential humungous hyperscale opportunity in front of it, with a startling 600PB footprint possibility at Meta, plus more at Azure using Equinix colo-resident Pure arrays for EDA work.
This comes from modelling by Wells Fargo analyst Aron Rakers whos been poring over Pure numbers for his subscribers. We learnt about Pures adoption by Meta (Facebook as was) in January with a phase 1 total of 175PB of Flash Array and 10PB of FlashBlade storage capacity.Phase 2 is underway, and during this 2022 year Meta will grow its AI Research SuperCluster (RSC) storage to exabyte-level capacity.
Taken literally at 1EB that gives Pure an 875PB opportunity. Rakers views it differently: We would estimate Pures potential capacity opportunity in the ~600PB range for going forward, which compares to the company estimated to have shipped ~1.86EB of total storage capacity in 2021, according to Gartner. Put simply, we think Pure has a much broader opportunity from the Meta AI RSC deployment looking forward.
Pure also won a deal with Azure and Equinix back in November for FlashBlade unified file+object storage placed in Equinix co-location centers with a high-speed, low-latency connection to Azure datacenters for EDA, HPC and other highly parallel workloads.Thats two hyperscaler customers for Pure.
Rakers thinks there is an increasing potential that the company could see additional hyperscale opportunities. He quotes Pure CEO Charles Giancarlo answering analyst questions in the Q4 2022 earnings call: Its a little bit difficult to predict the exact timing, but we [Pure] do have conversations ongoing. Its certainly my expectation, but I cant say that its near-term. But 12 months is a long-time I hope to have an update there; its definitely of strategic importance to the company overall.
After talking to various people Rakers thinks Pure is engaged in discussions with a couple of the other large hyperscale cloud companies on potential future projects involving all-Flash storage deployments. Thats two more.
Rakers suggests that hyperscaler customers could be finding that the scale-out requirements of AI infrastructure and high-performance computing workloads mean they have to use all-flash arrays instead of hybrid or all-disk arrays for large capacity primary data storage.
The other all-flash array suppliers will be wondering why exactly Pure was chosen instead of, for example, industry leaders Dell EMC and NetApp. Particularly NetApp, which has a good public cloud presencewith Azure NetApp Files.
We cant realistically expect Pure to scoop up every hyperscalers all-flash array opportunity. But, if these prospects in front of Pure turn out to be real and are of a similar size to Meta, then Pures hyperscale opportunity is, well, literally hyperscale in scope.

Hands on with Microsoft Edge Drop: New feature to share Windows apps, files – WindowsLatest
Microsoft Edge Drop is now rolling out to select users in the Canary development channel, making it easier to share files and notes across devices with the browser. In a way, Edge Drop is similar to Telegrams saved messages feature, which serves as your personal cloud storage for any texts or media you may want to save for future reference.
Microsoft Edge Drop lives in the toolbar of the browser and it comes with a simple user interface. Based on our tests, it looks like you can drop pretty much anything in Edge Drop, including apps, texts, notes, files, and other types of attachments. The upload and download speed is also fast, thanks to Microsoft cloud integration.
Microsoft is not working on a new cloud storage service for Edge. Instead, the company plans to use OneDrive. In order to access the feature, you must log in to your Microsoft account and the storage of the feature will apparently depend on OneDrive. If your OneDrive is low on storage, you wont be able to use the feature.
After connecting to your Microsoft account, you can click on the send icon in the toolbar to launch a Drop panel. You can send your first file or note by selecting the button or typing in the message box.
In the above example, we posted a simple message, which was later synced across all installations of Microsoft Edge where this experimental feature is available.
As mentioned, it is possible to share anything through Drop. For example, we uploaded an app called MPV player (mpv.exe) and played a video through the player on another device, and it just worked fine.
It looks like you can use it like Telegrams saved messages cloud storage of sorts.
In one of the tabs of Edge Drop, we can see that OneDrive integration storage. This suggests that the space utilized by OneDrive will count towards your storage plan.
Of course, you can use OneDrive to share your files, but Microsoft Edge Drop makes it more convenient to share and access those files. Its all organized by default. At the same time, this could help Microsoft sell its Office subscription or OneDrive premium storage to more users.
It is worth mentioning that this feature is entirely optional and you can turn it from the Settings > Appearence.
Microsoft is also working on other new features for Edge. For example, the company recently started testing a Cloudflare-powered VPN (a feature called Secure Network Mode) that doesnt let you change your geolocation but encrypts your data by using one of the nearest Cloudflare servers.

Do IT teams have what it takes? Creating a holistic approach to data management – Solutions Review
This is part of Solutions Reviews Premium Content Series, a collection of contributed columns written by industry experts in maturing software categories. In this submission, GigaSpaces CEO Adi Paz
A recent report by IBM Institute for Business Value revealed that during the first year of the pandemic, 60 percent of organizations accelerated investment in digital transformation, while 55 percent underwent significant changes to their strategy, and 55 percent of CEOs prioritized becoming more agile all of which indicate that the adoption of new technology is reshaping business operations and accelerating digital efforts.
Growth in cloud spending jumped from 17 percent in 2019 to 23 percent in 2021. But that doesnt mean everyone is or should be moving everything to the cloud. In fact, 71 percent of executives said mainframe-based applications are core to their strategy, and the percentage of organizations leveraging mainframes in a hybrid cloud environment will double in the next three years. Companies expect theyll increase the percentage of applications both in the cloud and on the mainframe in the next two years, increasing the portion of mainframe-based applications.
The good news for organizations is that they dont have to choose. They can have on-premises data centers, mainframes, private cloud, public cloud, edge computing, and more all working together.
On the downside, it will require some effort to get there. The rush to digitize meant that each line of business has been optimizing its own processes, so organizations have, on average, at least 10 clouds across different business functions. That fragmented, siloed approach has limited the value of their transformation efforts. As a result, some 74 percent of companies said cloud-related transformations fail to capture the expected business value.
The key to successful cloud and digital transformation is finding a way to marry the various strategies. This means implementing an efficient and comprehensive data management system that quickly and securely makes information available where and when its needed.
Companies that succeed in implementing a more holistic approach to data management tend to follow three principles as part of their transformation.
Digital transformation doesnt have to happen all at once. In fact, it shouldnt. Companies that achieve successful, holistic digital transformation do so with a step-by-step approach that allows them to quickly pivot and adapt to changes as they pursue long-term goals.
Think about your own unique environments and how to integrate them. Where does the data reside? How should you share data? What security controls do you need? What security standards should you hold partners to? Factor in the attributes of your particular industry, workloads, and ecosystem.
Transforming data management is a daunting task that introduces new approaches. Take it one step at a time.
Unfortunately, you cant simply copy another companys successful digital transformation roadmap. You need to tailor a plan to your business, resources, and capabilities. Start by taking stock of your team and resources, and identify any gaps.
Examine your mainframe capabilities, your requirements for both cloud storage and your mainframe, and how the two will interact in your hybrid cloud technology ecosystem. Build a portfolio of applications and workflows that details what resides where.
Understand where you stand from a talent and skills perspective. Do you have the technical resources to make sure your unique configuration actually works, or do you need help from a partner?
Be bold and brave. Try many strategies. Because youre taking an iterative approach, you dont have to worry about investing significant time and resources in a strategy that doesnt work. Youll quickly discover what to keep and what to move away from, while potentially introducing capabilities you wouldnt have otherwise pursued.
Try adopting new APIs, microservices, developing cloud-native applications, and introducing the latest DevOps techniques. You cant know which approaches and which
combinations will work best for your business until you try them. Now is the time to experiment, see what sticks, and determine the best mix for your needs and goals.
The pandemic gave most companies a new sense of urgency for their digital transformation. Now its time to be more strategic and to reassess your approach to data management. By following these principles, you can plan a more holistic future that meets customer demand while maximizing business value.

Your photos could be gone in a flash if you’re not careful, we have tips on how to protect your pics – WSB Atlanta
ATLANTA We love taking photos and videos on our phones, but are we as good about saving them?
Channel 2s Linda Stouffer has some things to share about protecting those media files!
Technology journalist Chris Rowlands says that he has thousands of photos in his 256GB phone. He tells us that trusting the cloud is not always a guarantee that your memories are being protected.
I think I have like 40,000 but my phones only 256GB. Some of them are backed up to the cloud. Some of them arent, but thats pretty much all I do is trust the cloud, said Rowlands. But there are times when it doesnt happen, whether you have a connectivity issue, photos arent backed up, then you lose your phone, theyre gone.
[DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks]
Rowlands said phone companies want you to use their cloud storage but storage space can become an issue.
And obviously once you hit that limit, if you have, for example, 30,000 photos on your phone, youre probably going to need to shell out a few dollars a month, basically to expand the storage capacity, said Rowlands.
Rowlands said that if your family has different types of devices, paying for Google Photos storage might be worth it to have everything in one place.
Google Photos has some of the most powerful AI-driven suggestion software and editing tools, said Rowlands. It will scan your library to protect the subjects of photos.
Other options include backing it up on a hard drive, while Amazon also offers unlimited storage for Prime customers.
It sort of seems like an old-school suggestion, but its never a bad idea to have a second kind of physical copy of your photos on a hard drive, said Rowlands.
TRENDING STORIES:
He said jump drives are great but it comes with a small risk.
Jump drives, great idea. The only risk, obviously, is theyre also quite small. So you can lose those almost as easily as the phone, said Rowlands.
Apps are another option. Apps such as Backblaze and Flickr can help you with the backup process or back up a physical copy on a drive.
But if that sounds too complicated and youd rather just stick to the cloud, Rowlands suggests using two-factor authentication to protect yourself from potential hacks.
Its just that peace of mind thing, right? Because the whole thing of backing up is so that you know that your photos are safe, said Rowlands.
For other tips, check your backup settings to make sure that your photos are saved.
If you delete a photo from your phone by accident, it should still be in the cloud for 30 days.

NordLocker offers continuous data protection as new report finds that 90% of ransomware incidents impact business’ ability to operate – GlobeNewswire
LONDON, June 02, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- NordLocker, one of the leaders in encrypted cloud storage services, highlights the importance of continuous data protection as a new report finds that 65% of ransomware attacks result in data being encrypted. In 90% of the incidents, a business's ability to operate is impacted.
One of the most valuable business assets is its data, be it client information, contracts, sales figures, marketing plans, or other details that are confidential and/or critical to an organizations operations. Thus, not only competing businesses but also cybercriminals are after this vital information, says Oliver Noble, a cybersecurity expert at NordLocker, an encrypted cloud storage provider. In order to avoid the risk of being cut out of timely access to data, a company needs to ensure it keeps reliable and frequent backups.
What is continuous data protection?
Continuous data protection (CDP) is real-time backup where every change a user makes to data automatically gets backed up. As opposed to traditional systems that back up data periodically, for example, nightly or weekly, CDP records every version a user saves. In case of data loss or corruption, continuous backup allows the user or administrator to restore data at any point in time.
CDP ensures that unexpected events, such as power outages or natural disasters, dont cause gaps in coverage of critical business assets, says Oliver Noble. With CDP, a company can roll back its systems and data almost immediately after experiencing a ransomware attack or data loss due to human error, which remains the main cause of cybersecurity incidents at work.
Best solutions for continuous data protection
Any business that cant afford its data getting lost, stolen, leaked, or destroyed and thus looking for security and peace of mind should consider using continuous data protection. Companies of all sizes, from small family-owned companies to large enterprises, can benefit from CDP by minimizing the impact of various incidents and keeping their business running smoothly.
CDP can be used to protect data stored on-premise or in the cloud.
