Stanford University Survey: 12 Greek scientists among the top ones globally – CEOWORLD magazine

A team of professors from Stanford University in the United States has published a list of the top scientists around the world. This list includes among others- 12 Greek professors of the Athens University of Economics and Business. The rankings were based on the research Data for Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators 2020. The scientists were evaluated for their scientific work in 2019. More specifically, the evaluation was based on the impact of their research work and mainly on the reports they received according to the Scopus database in a total of 22 scientific fields and 176 sub-fields.

How students at EWU, SFCC are helping local governments with cybersecurity protection – The Spokesman-Review

Darrik Teller and his team of security operations center analysts figured something was up when they saw a Russian-based IP address pinging a system a couple hundred times over approximately a minute and a half.

The requests were made to the system of an Eastern Washington municipality that Teller and his team monitored earlier this year. After some more research into the IP address, Teller said the group brought their suspicions to higher authorities as a likely threat.

What ended up happening was the incident responders agreed with us that it was a little weird seeing a Russian IP address trying to find vulnerabilities in the system, Teller said, to which they then blacklisted that IP and sent it to other municipalities in the area.

All in a days work for entry-level security analysts working for a small local government except Teller and his team were not government employees.

Theyre Eastern Washington University students.

Their experience was a fruit of a Washington-based nonprofits effort to provide a level of protection to municipalities and government agencies in need while offering real-life experience to cybersecurity students.

The Public Infrastructure Security Cyber Education System (PISCES) collaborates with participating colleges and universities so cybersecurity students can monitor real web traffic from government organizations for potential attacks and anomalies. After evaluating the threat, students escalate the issues as needed to higher-level cybersecurity authorities with PISCES.

PISCES is partnered with the the Department of Homeland Security and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Members of the board include Dan Wordell, information security officer for the City of Spokane.

City, county, maritime port or any other type of small government organization with less than 150 employees are eligible for free PISCES services. Participating students sign a nondisclosure agreement.

Current participants include public organizations in Spokane Valley, Covington and Port Townsend, according to the Wall Street Journal. Spokane Valley officials did not immediately return a request for comment.

Its been really productive for the students, and we are doing a much-needed service for the municipalities that we cover, and we cover municipalities across the entire state of Washington, said Mark Neufville, the instructor for Spokane Falls Community Colleges PISCES coursework.

Michael Hamilton, a co-founder of PISCES, declined to publicly disclose the list of participating public-sector organizations. Hamilton said the staffing eligibility threshold ensures the nonprofit does not compete with private-sector companies.

Its metadata; we cant read email, we dont see your webpage, we dont see financial transactions or anything like that. We see who you talked to, what time it was, how long the conversation lasted, etc. Hamilton said. Collecting metadata and then using it as real-time curriculum for students we make practitioners that have operational experience.

Eastern, Western and Central Washington universities, SFCC, Green River College and Alabama A&M University are the current program participants. PISCES is in the process of expanding into at least Colorado and Idaho.

Originally, this was going to be the employee pipeline for my company, said Hamilton, chief information security officer for the Washington-based CI Security. Now, were in a fistfight with Boeing and General Electric. (Students) are getting snapped up like crazy.

Students arent paid; rather, they get class credit and can earn a certificate from PISCES after monitoring for a certain amount of hours, said Stu Steiner, assistant professor of computer science at EWU.

WWU, the first university to start the class, manages the curriculum with input from the other participating schools, said Erik Fretheim, the director of WWUs cybersecurity program.

We try to make it as easy as possible for the schools to do it, but it is a somewhat demanding class for schools to teach because the instructors have to really know their stuff well since theyre dealing with live information, said Freitheim, who sits on the PISCES board. They cant just hope to wing it and stay a chapter ahead of the students because they can get any type of question at any time.

After WWU, SFCC was among the first institutions to sign on for a PISCES curriculum to complement its degree programs in cybersecurity and information systems and technology, said Lenaya Hogan, SFCCs Bachelor of Applied Science program coordinator. As part of the program, SFCC students have put together reports on potential threats they have raised to higher authorities.

Hogan said the PISCES program offers students a reality check with what they might want to do later in life.

Its kind of like an internship or something like that nature that it gives you that real-life experience to build your confidence, she said.

EWU, meanwhile, ran through the program for the first time this past winter quarter from January through April. With the project, EWU juniors and seniors each worked 10 hours per week in teams, cooperating with other schools to cover shifts throughout the day without overlap.

For the 2022 winter quarter, Steiner said he hopes to ease students into the work with controlled practice runs, as the amount of data from the public-sector organizations can be pretty overwhelming at first.

For my students and for our Eastern students, just that hands-on experience, theres nothing like it in the world, Steiner said.

Teller, who will start at General Motors next month, can attest to that.

Graduating with a bachelors degree in computer science, Teller said he was told in his job offer that the real-life experience is part of what set him apart from other candidates.

The programs of those using the PISCES project are definitely something that was good for the students, good for the school and also good for the security of the municipalities that we were supporting, he said. Being able to have 50-60 students have eyes on this data, to which were providing monitoring almost 24/7, is very much something that is good for everyone involved in that process.

Wagner, a visual and performing arts major and music composition and technology minor, participated by presenting original music titled Sketch for Brass Quartet, Score for Video: Spiders, Theme for a Villain, Score for Video: Driving in New Mexico and The Year Long March.

The music continues to be available online via the Visual and Performing Arts at Worcester State University channel on YouTube.com. On the channel, Wagners music is accessible in a May 4 presentation titled Spring 2021 Student Music Compositions.

Julian and his fellow student composers showcased exceptional technical skills and musicality in their Spring 2021 presentation of original compositions, and its an honor to be able to present this professional collection of work, said Worcester State Music Professor and Applied Music Coordinator Kyle Martin. Making the work of our students more accessible via online efforts has continued to inspire us through the unprecedented times.

Wagner also performed Jobims Sabia on guitar with VPA Professor and guitarist Carlos Odria in Extreme Arterys Mosaic of Music presentation. IBM partners with U.K. on $300M quantum computing research initiative – VentureBeat

Elevate your enterprise data technology and strategy at Transform 2021.

The U.K. government and IBM this week announced a five-year 210 million ($297.5 million) artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing collaboration, in the hopes of making new discoveries and developing sustainable technologies in fields ranging from life sciences to manufacturing.

The program will hire 60 scientists, as well as bringing in interns and students to work under the auspices of IBM Research and the U.K.s Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) at the Hartree Centre in Daresbury, Cheshire. The newly formed Hartree National Centre for Digital Innovation (HNCDI) will apply AI, high performance computing (HPC) and data analytics, quantum computing, and cloud technologies to advance research in areas like materials development and environmental sustainability, IBM said in a statement.

Artificial intelligence and quantum computing have the potential to revolutionize everything from the way we travel to the way we shop. They are exactly the kind of fields I want the U.K. to be leading in, U.K. Science Minister Amanda Solloway said.

The Hartree Centre was opened in 2012 by UK Research and Innovations STFC as an HPC, data analytics, and AI research facility. Its housed within Sci-Tech Daresburys laboratory for research in accelerator science, biomedicine, physics, chemistry, materials, engineering, computational science, and more.

The program is part of IBMs Discovery Accelerator initiative to accelerate discovery and innovation based on a convergence of advanced technologies at research centers like HNCDI, the company said. This will be IBMs first Discovery Accelerator research center in Europe.

As part of the HNCDI program, the STFC Hartree Center is joining over 150 global organizations, ranging from Fortune 500 companies to startups, with an IBM Hybrid Cloud-accessible connection to the IBM Quantum Network. The Quantum Network is the computing giants assembly of premium quantum computers and development tools. IBM will also provide access to its commercial and experimental AI products and tools for work in areas like material design, scaling and automation, supply chain logistics, and trusted AI applications, the company said.

IBM has been busy inking Discovery Accelerator deals with partners this year. The company last month made a $200 million investment in a 10-year joint project with the Grainger College of Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). As with the HNCDI in the U.K., the planned IBM-Illinois Discovery Accelerator Institute at UIUC will build out new research facilities and hire faculty and technicians.

Earlier this year, IBM announced a 10-year quantum computing collaboration with the Cleveland Clinic to build the computational foundation of the future Cleveland Clinic Global Center for Pathogen Research & Human Health. That project will see the installation of the first U.S.-based on-premises, private sector IBM Quantum System One, the company said. In the coming years, IBM also plans to install one of its first next-generation 1,000+ qubit quantum systems at another Cleveland client site.

The pandemic added urgency to the task of harnessing quantum computing, AI, and other cutting-edge technologies to help solve medicines most pressing problems, IBM chair and CEO Arvind Krishna said in March at the time of the Cleveland Clinic announcement.

The COVID-19 pandemic has spawned one of the greatest races in the history of scientific discovery one that demands unprecedented agility and speed, Krishna said in a statement.

At the same time, science is experiencing a change of its own with high-performance computing, hybrid cloud, data, AI, and quantum computing being used in new ways to break through long-standing bottlenecks in scientific discovery. Our new collaboration with Cleveland Clinic will combine their world-renowned expertise in health care and life sciences with IBMs next-generation technologies to make scientific discovery faster and the scope of that discovery larger than ever, Krishna said.

Egypt’s peer-reviewed publication output best in Africa – University World News

The North African country beat South Africa, which is now in second place. South Africa had been the top producer of research in Africa since 1996, when the SCImago Journal and Country Rank platform was launched at the University of Granada in Madrid, Spain.

Egypt has been ranked in 30th position out of 232 countries. Following South Africas 29th position in 2017 and 2018, it is the highest rank achieved by an African country.

The publications were drawn from 27 thematic areas, containing 313 specific subject areas from 34,100 peer-reviewed journals that were published by more than 5,000 international publishers.

According to SCImagos website, most of the publications had been listed by Scopus, which is the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature in the world.

Datasets that were released in May show that Egypt increased its research output by almost 19% in 2020, as it produced 32,323 publications, compared to 26,223 publications in 2019, an increase of 6,100 publications.

This was against South Africas 32,174 publications in 2020 as compared to 29,733 publications in the previous year. In this regard, South Africa had increased its 2019 output of 29,733 by 2,441 or 7.6% and was ranked in 31st position.

But, unlike many other African countries with research output concentrated in fields that are supported by donors, Egypts research output appears across a wide spectrum, including agricultural sciences, computer applications and networks, engineering and technology, physical sciences, medicine, veterinary sciences, but less in the social sciences, arts and humanities.

Computer technologies

Last year, Egypt led other African countries in the production of journal papers in various sciences, such as chemistry with 1,978 papers, 1,446 in physics, 1,391 in biochemistry, 1,021 in analytical chemistry, 841 in atomic and molecular physics and 528 in mathematics.

In engineering and technology, Egypt still led other African countries by publishing more papers in electrical and electronic engineering (2,169), materials science (1,884), energy engineering and power technology (1,171), chemical engineering (1,055), mechanical engineering (939), instrumentation engineering, control and systems engineering (618), civil and structural engineering (572), instrumentation engineering (552) and signal processing (534).

Datasets also showed Egypt performed well in computer-related technologies, as it took first position in Africa in producing journal articles in computer science (1,167), computer science applications (1,097), computer networks and communication (1,012), and software development (603).

But the country faltered slightly in computer vision and pattern recognition, as it produced only 155 publications compared to South Africas 376, Moroccos 342 and Tunisias 204. Egypts publications slipped marginally in artificial intelligence and robotics, as it produced 870 papers compared to Moroccos 876 the best output in the continent in the field.

A medical research hub

Whether through partnerships with countries in Western Europe and North America, as recently indicated by researchers at the Institute for Scientific Information, SCImagos datasets indicated that Egypt was becoming a hub for medical research in a range of specific fields.

The country published 4,193 papers in general medicine, 946 in pharmaceutical sciences, 914 in drug discovery, 911 in surgery, 589 in biomedical engineering and 500 in oncology the best research output in these fields on the continent.

Egyptian researchers took first position in other medical fields by publishing 421 papers in microbiology, 397 in cardiology, 379 in dermatology, 338 in general cancer research, 327 in immunology, 309 in neuroscience and 269 in child health.

In forensic medicine, researchers in Egypt last year published 175 papers followed by South Africa with 123 papers.

In medical areas that are robustly supported by donors in Sub-Saharan Africa, Egypt was outperformed by South Africa, for instance in output of publications on infectious diseases, parasitology, virology, nutrition and dietetics, and microbiology medicine. The country did not perform well in aesthetic medicine as well as in gerontology, which is the study of old age.

Upward trajectory

Egypt performed well in agricultural sciences, as it was leading African countries in various disciplines that included plant science (910), crop science (715), biotechnology (581), genetics (497), food science (493) and cell biology (478).

Egypt also did well in niche scientific fields such as nephrology, the specialised study of kidneys, where researchers there published 127 papers as compared to South Africas 59 and Nigerias 47, in an area in which only 26 countries published, but half of these countries published fewer than five papers each during the period of analysis.

But, despite its strong publishing in sciences, Egypt did not perform well in education, as it published only 175 publications, compared to South Africas 1,443 and Nigerias 399.

As in most countries in Africa, researchers in the social sciences, arts and humanities in Egypt did not perform well, especially in gender studies, philosophy, political science, leadership and management, visual arts and performing arts, music, marketing and population studies.

But, despite those shortcomings, what SCImagos datasets revealed in the past five years or so was that Egypts research capacity is on an upward trajectory with its share of Africas publications in peer-reviewed journals at about 23%.
