Privacy experts said the Flo case could cause wider user mistrust of womens health apps.
Its become even more cynical than just buyer beware, Deven McGraw, the chief regulatory officer of Ciitizen, a company that helps people gain access to and control their health information, said of consumer health apps. You did your homework. You read this apps privacy policy. You thought you were putting your data in a trusted place. And turns out that the company didnt take its obligation seriously.
Flo certainly isnt the only app accused of mishandling intimate data. In 2019, Privacy International, a nonprofit group in Britain, studied a number of popular period-tracking apps s and reported that two of them transmitted sensitive information such as details on users symptoms and contraceptive use to Facebook and other companies.
Over the last two years, lawmakers and state attorneys general in the U.S. have begun scrutinizing period-tracking and fertility apps. Last March, several members of Congress sent letters to Apple and Google asking the companies to remove any period trackers that collected users health data without obtaining their explicit permission, in an attempt to place more responsibility on the gatekeepers.
In the European Union, the onus is squarely on app developers, giving consumers broad rights to control their data. In particular, a comprehensive E.U. law called the General Data Protection Regulation typically requires companies to obtain explicit permission before collecting or sharing sensitive personal information like health details.
Deceptive data mining, misleading privacy policies and other troubling practices do not negate the need for womens health apps. But regulators going after leaky apps, one by one, doesnt give consumers much confidence or clarity either.
Whats needed, experts suggest, is a new regulatory framework that enables health care providers and researchers to work with consumer apps to better understand womens health, whether its symptoms, medications or different responses to disease.
Until recently, women have been underrepresented in medical research, clinical trials for drugs and vaccines, and even biology textbooks, leaving health care providers with large blind spots in their understanding of and ability to care for womens bodies, which often have very different needs and responses than mens bodies.

Demand for robotic goods-to-person systems to quadruple through 2023 – DC Velocity
Demand for robotic goods-to-person (G2P) material handling systems is expected to quadruple over the next two years as organizations seek ways to enforce social distancing in warehouses,according to datafrom industry analyst Gartner.
Fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic is increasing demand for robotics in warehouses and distribution centers, Dwight Klappich, vice president analyst with the Gartner Supply Chain practice, said in a statement this week. G2P systems are an easy and economical way to not only enforce social distancing, but also improve productivity.
Klappich added that robotic G2P systems are especially attractive because they are easy to implement and less invasive than other social distancing technologies, such as those that track employees movements.
Keeping people in place and using a virus-resistant robot to move goods around respects peoples privacy and keeps them safe at the same time, Klappich said.
G2P systems also drive broader long-term improvements in efficiency and productivity while offering other benefits, such as greater storage density.
The G2P data is part of a larger report on supply chain technology trends for 2021 that also predicts accelerated investment in artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced analytics (AA) capabilities among supply chain organizations. The data show that 50% of those organizations plan such investments through 2024, primarily to meet a growing need to make better, more informed decisions faster.
Leading organizations use AI and AA to dig through the vast amounts of data they generate to understand what is happening in their business now andmore importantlywhat is likely to happen in the future, according to Andrew Stevens, senior director analyst with the Gartner Supply Chain practice.
Companies will continue to invest in applications that embed, augment, or apply AI and AA tools, he said.
Supply chain leaders should adopt a broad and holistic perspective when it comes to AI and AA. These technologies are increasingly ubiquitous, and there are many ways in which they can be appliedsuch as data mining for smart manufacturing, visibility tools and autonomous transportation, and to aid customer retention, Stevens said.

Today, innovations in mining involve artificial intelligence that can predict when haul trucks are in need of maintenance, and virtual mining operating autonomous and auxiliary vehicles and machines and drones that survey mine sites to ensure the safety of workers. In addition to appraising mining day-to-day operations with outdated notions, the safety and environmental implications associated with mining are also mostly archaic.
We are fortunate to have the most advanced technology companies for mining located in Arizona, a world-class minerals program at the University of Arizona, and a large skilled workforce, says Dr. Mary M. Poulton, professor emerita of mining and geological engineering and co-director of the Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources. When you couple all of these assets with an emphasis on environmental protection and conservation of water, Arizona is one of the areas with the most responsible mining on earth.
Mining is now a highly technical industry driven by innovation, data and advanced analytics, adds Steve Higgins, senior vice president and chief administrative officer for Freeport McMoRan. In late 2018, a pilot program initiated at our Bagdad mine in Northwest Arizona was successful in using data science, machine learning and integrated functional teams to address bottlenecks.
The result of which, according to Higgins, provided cost benefits and drove improved overall performance.
The program has now been implemented across other operations, he says. Significant advances have been made in environmental, sustainable and responsible mining practices.
In its commitment to environmental responsibility, Freeport-McMoRan is a member of numerous industry associations and holds leadership positions in various organizations that provide a platform for advancing sustainability. In fact, because of its leadership, Freeport-McMoRan was instrumental in the development of the Copper Mark, an assurance framework developed to demonstrate the copper industrys responsible production practices and contributions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Additionally, Freeport-McMoRan is a founding member of the International Council on Metals and Mining, an organization dedicated to a safe, fair and sustainable mining and metals industry.

As a technology hub for mining, Arizona is becoming the Silicon Valley of mining, Poulton says. And, as more technology companies are attracted to Arizona, more jobs are created. These companies serve a global mining industry. The University of Arizona helps develop the technologies that are being commercialized by these companies and also helps supply the workforce necessary to use the technologies.
Poulton provides the example of ASARCOs designation of land by the Santa Cruz River near the Mission Mine for a massive solar farm. The solar energy not only helps provide some of the power for its Mineral Discovery Center, but also puts energy on the grid to supply Tucson homes with power.
Most companies have programs to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions ranging from renewable energy to energy-efficient vehicles, pumps, motors, etc., Poulton says. Faculty at the University of Arizona have had research programs on using different kinds of solar arrays on mine tailings solar arrays that float and can reduce evaporation (these two were done by Dr. Moe Momayez).
University of Arizona faculty have also looked at low-temperature geothermal energy to generate power and then use the residual heat for things like heating greenhouses or fish farming, also facilitated by Dr. Momayez, according to Poulton.
As the demand for minerals continues to rise, experts can likely predict the advent of more innovative mining technologies and practices, and, as they come, perhaps those old eyeglasses and old perceptions of the industry will finally be retired.
