Deadly Dam Collapse That Caused One of Brazil’s Worst Environmental Disasters Could Have Been Predicted – SciTechDaily

One of Brazils worst environmental disasters a dam collapse that also killed more than 200 people could have been foreseen with the right monitoring technology, according to a new study by the University of Nottingham and Durham University.
The high-profile catastrophe took place on January 25, 2019 at a tailings dam near the Crrego do Feijo iron ore mine, close to the town of Brumadinho, in Minas Gerais state, south-east Brazil.
When the dam collapsed, it caused a torrent of sludge to cover surrounding land; taking lives, destroying homes and livelihoods and polluting rivers with toxic material.

Owned by Vale, Brazils largest mining company, the tailings dam was used for more than 40 years to hold waste from the mine. While it is not uncommon for such dams to move as more material is added and it compacts and shifts, accelerated movement shouldnt happen; its a precursor that failure will occur. Brumadinho was the second Vale-owned mining dam to collapse in recent years and one of many widely-reported failures worldwide.
There are growing concerns about the stability of this particular type of dam and a significant number need enhanced monitoring says lead author Assistant Professor Stephen Grebby from the Nottingham Geospatial Institute at the University.
Dr. Grebby, an expert at mapping the Earths surface from space, said: Most mining companies currently rely upon ground-based sensors to monitor the stability of dams. However, these typically offer an inadequate coverage of measurements over the whole of the dam, which can make it difficult to detect movement or other signs of distress.

Applying InSAR (satellite radar imaging) to check for small ground movements in and around dams is not current standard practice and this is something Dr. Grebby would like to see change.
He collaborated with Durham University and University of Nottingham spin-out company Terra Motion Ltd on the study to identify whether failure at Brumadinho could have been foreseen.
They used an advanced InSAR technique called Intermittent Small Baseline Subset (ISBAS), developed by the University of Nottingham and Terra Motion, which can help overcome the limitations faced when using some of the more conventional InSAR techniques over vegetated terrain. Another benefit of this technology, over on-the-ground sensors, is it looks down from above and offers a more complete picture of ground movements with millimeter-level accuracy.

Dr. Grebby adds: Our ISBAS InSAR results revealed that different areas of the dam were moving at different rates and some of these were seen to accelerate suddenly during the two months preceding the collapse. Despite the dam being monitored by the mining company using standard techniques with no apparent warning raised, our analyses of the precursory movement indicate the timing of the collapse was foreseeable.
If monitored routinely, using the ISBAS InSAR technique, the failure date could have been predicted to within a week of it happening. Crucially, this prediction would have been possible around 40 days prior to the collapse, allowing time for a warning to be raised that the dam was becoming unstable. This could have led to more in-depth monitoring or other mitigation measures to avert the loss of life and environmental disaster that tragically unfolded.
The full findings have just been published in the paper Advanced analysis of satellite data reveals ground deformation precursors to the Brumadinho Tailings Dam collapse in the Nature journal Communications Earth & Environment.
Professor David Toll, Co-Director of the Institute for Hazard, Risk and Resilience at Durham University, said Identifying an acceleration of ground movements during a period of wetting, just prior to the failure, helped to corroborate the anticipated failure mechanism. The collapse of the tailings dam can be explained by a reduction in suction in the tailings contributing to internal strains that could induce static liquefaction in the brittle materials.
Professor Jon Gluyas, Executive Director of Durham Energy Institute at Durham University said, The novel use of InSAR satellite data to monitor the stability of dams is a real breakthrough as it means that you dont need to instrument the ground in and around the dam to monitor it. Monitoring is thus no longer solely in the hands of the operating company.
Dr. Andrew Sowter, CTO of Terra Motion Limited and inventor of the ISBAS advanced InSAR technique said, This work would not have been possible without the availability of free satellite data from the Sentinel-1 mission which has global reach and is sustainable for the foreseeable future. Along with the innovative approach described in this paper and our unique InSAR products, this means that a low-cost operational remote tailings monitoring system is within reach at local, regional and even national scales anywhere in the world.
The researchers are now looking to develop the technology as a software that could be offered to the mining industry, which is looking out for a reliable, early warning system to predict the risk of imminent collapse at tailing dams. Combined with on-the-ground sensors, Dr. Grebby sees advanced InSAR techniques as a valuable addition to the monitoring tool box to evacuate and protect life.

Analytics 1.0: As evident as it can get, this era (that lasted till the early to the middle of the millennium) showcases the beginning or rather the early days of Data Analytics. This is the period of 1950s that obviously had less technological advancements whatsoever when compared to what we have today. Well, that did not serve as a hindrance to the companies aiming to analyse data and then producing useful information out of it. The companies collected the data (offline) and manually analysed it.
However, during this period, more time was spent on collecting data and relatively lesser time in analysing it. Hence, the role of a data analyst in this era was more of a technician who goes about handling the technology and collecting data. The work was heavily manually dealt, was slow and also was backed by limited data sources. What added to the difficulties was the time consumed in obtaining the results.
Analytics 2.0: An era that paved way for changing the world for better. Seeing the enormous amount of data across the globe, it was during this phase that the term big data was coined. It was in this phase that the analytics was no longer limited to the large organizations and making out the best of it. Almost every business that had something or the other to do with digital infrastructure started incorporating ways to deal with large data and come up with meaningful insights. This era worked on the shortcomings of the previous one.
Early and mid-2000s saw the invention of tools like OLAP, Data mining, etc. that takes technological advancements to the next level. On that note, internet gained immense popularity and made in to the list of Must haves not only for organizations but also households for that matter.
With technology becoming more advanced and mature and an access to automated options for managing data, the data analysts found themselves in a much better position. They could now analyse data, trends, etc. and come up with conclusions and recommendations like never before.
This era blessed us with Google, Paypal, Amazon and a lot more. Also, with the volume of data reaching heights, the storage and processing posed a problem.
Analytics 3.0: This is the era that saw smartphones, Facebook, twitter, connected devices, etc. marked their existence. The companies made use of better search algorithms, recommendations and suggestions all driven by the analytics rooted in the data to attract the customers. Here, we saw the creation of Online Analytical Processing platforms by big players (firms) in the market. Realizing the fact that the companies will have to deal with unstructured data as well, they got familiar to a new class of databases called NoSQL. New technologies were introduced for faster processing and machine learning models were used for advanced analytics.
The era continues till late 2000s and the early 10s. Meanwhile, Data science emerged out to be another area with huge scope. This paved way for the requirement of data scientists.
Analytics 4.0: Though this phase is still in its early days, but still pulling data from hundreds of sources isnt a tough task at all. Organizations are a step ahead in implementing advanced automated decision making tools using cloud and big data technologies, predictive analytics. With leading cloud platforms, it is now possible to enable massive streaming and complex analytics.
Having seen at how data analytics has evolved over the years, right from manually getting the tasks done to inventing sophisticated platforms and algorithms, it would not be surprising to see what it has in store for the future and how technologically advanced will the world become. When you receive a faulty or unwanted item, Amazon usually asks you to initiate a return for a refund or replacement. However, if the item is inexpensive, it might cost the company a lot to ship it back to the warehouse.
So, companies like Amazon and Walmart are asking customers to keep these items to save some money. According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, these online retail giants are using AI to determine if it economically makes sense to initiate a return of an unwanted item.
The report notes that the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated this process as more people are ordering stuff online, andcompanies could increase efficiency if theres one less logistical hassle to deal with.
Target and Walmart both confirmed to the WSJ that they ask customers to keep or donate the items they dont plan on reselling. The publication also notes that according to several shipping companies, returns in the past year have jumped significantly.
CBRE Group, an investment firm, said that returns in the past holiday season could skyrocket to $70.5 billion 73% more than the average of the last five years.
Some delivery companies are working with ecommerce companies to provide means to pick items up from customers or allow them to return them at a nearby place. But as it turns out, its cheaper to just let you keep the stuff.
