Epiroc introduces the RCS 4.20 Rig Control System for Pit Viper rigs – MINING.com
Before its release, we put RCS 4.20 to the test in multiple environments around the globe. Our test partners saw increases in their cycle penetration rates, including multi-pass, compared to older software versions, Tyler Berens, automation director with the Epiroc Surface division, said in a release. The test mines also saw improved cycle effectiveness.
The Time Usage Model (TUM) allows the mine to embed definitions of machine activity into categories directly on RCS and enables an extra layer of data contextualized against modes of operation and machine operation. Operators will use a new interface to ensure effective functionality. Mines will be able to see productive time, scheduled downtime, operating delays and more to see a complete picture of the shift.
The implementation of TUM follows the Global Mining Guidelines Group framework in an effort to promote the benefits of a standard model. This allows for the decisions made directly from the control system to carry definition across the entire value chain.
Real Time Data provides the channel for rich data from the drill and control system to be captured and transferred for external system integration. With the right data, mines can make informed decisions and optimize value.
AutoDrill 2 Improvements also increase efficiency and productivity. AutoDrill applies optimal pulldown and rotation to drill as fast as possible, to clean and flush a hole, shut off air and dust suppression, and return the bit to tramming position. This is done with consistency through a shift.

The Weirdest Objects in the Universe | Space – Air & Space Magazine
As long as astronomers have gazed at the stars and planets, there has been the temptation to see the handiwork of intelligent life when there is no other apparent explanation.
Babylonians believed eclipses to be omens sent by gods. Percival Lowell thought he saw canals on Mars. Aware of this history, some astronomers have found humor in it. When pulsars were discovered in the 1960s, says Seth Shostak, the senior astronomer at the SETI Institute in California, they were first called LGMs, for little green men by the Cambridge astronomers who found them because they didnt know what they were. They were very regular radio sources. Within a year, the theoreticians figured out what they were rapidly rotating compact stars emitting radiation like lighthouses. More recently, he notes, a weirdly dimming object called Tabbys Star inspired theories of alien life, before astronomers solved the puzzle.
But what about the many puzzles in the universe that astronomers have not yet solved? Recently, scientists engaged in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) have suggested that its time to lookas well as listenfor advanced civilizations. SETI researchers do exactly what Frank Drake did in the first SETI experiment 60 years ago, says Shostak. A SETI founder, Drake assumed that because life developed on Earth, it would be most likely found on planets like ours orbiting stars like our sun. He and others pointed radio antennas at star systems likely to have planets and listened. Now scientists engaged in the search think its time for a change. Its worthwhile to not just do what was done 60 years ago, but also to keep an eye out for very unusual things, says Shostak. The universe has been around for three times as long as the Earth has been around, so there could be aliens out there that are very, very much more advanced than we arenot just 1,000 years, but millions and billions of years ahead. What could they build? Maybe they could re-engineer a star system.
NASA recently awarded a grant to a SETI project that will seek out signs of alien technosignatures, such as solar panel arrays on distant exoplanets. Breakthrough Listen, the largest SETI initiative to date, is thinking even bigger, searching for sophisticated engineering projects that span entire star systems or even galaxies (see Signs, Feb./Mar. 2019).
Its a fine line, says Andrew Siemion, director of the Berkeley SETI Research Center and the principal investigator of Breakthrough Listen. We have no evidence for technologically capable life anywhere else in the universe. So one doesnt want to immediately leap to that solution for any newly discovered astronomical phenomenon. But at the same time, one doesnt want to neglect the possibility that it could be going on.
Earlier this year, to help locate possible targets for future searcheswhether for signals or artifactsBreakthrough Listen released the first cut of its Exotica Catalog, a listing of almost 800 astronomical objects. Most of the catalog is a one-of-everything compilation, from rocky planets to blue-straggler stars. A smaller section lists the superlatives: the biggest, the hottest, the brightest, the farthest. But the most intriguing section catalogs anomalies: strange, unexplained objects such as puffy planets, slow-spinning pulsars, interstellar asteroids, fast radio bursts from beyond the Milky Way, and dozens more.
Astronomers say theyre likely to discover natural (if bizarre) explanations for them. But weve asked them to use their powers of imagination and extrapolation to suggest how the four examples listed here might be indications of intelligent life. Even if these four phenomena arent the products of alien civilizations, they illustrate that the universe can be pretty weird all on its own.
Infrared Alert
An alien megastructure could make stars appear unusually bright. One imagined megastructurea sphere or ring of giant panels built around stars to capture as much of their energy as possibleis named the Dyson Sphere for the physicist Freeman Dyson who popularized the concept in a 1960 Science article. One should expect that, within a few thousand years of its entering the stage of industrial development, any intelligent species should be found occupying an artificial biosphere which completely surrounds its parent star, he wrote.
Giant structures around a star would absorb a lot of energy, not all of which could be used by the civilization that built them. The rest would be radiated into space as heat, which would look especially bright in the infrared.
The difficulty is that you need a lot of industry around a star to detect the excess heat, says Jason Wright, a professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Pennsylvania State University. Theyd have to be using one percent or more of a stars light to have a noticeable effect. And many stars produce extra infrared light by heating nearby dust or asteroids.
Wright decided to kick things up a notch by looking at galaxies. I wondered if there might be galaxy-spanning technological species, he says. He found a few candidate galaxies in the observations of NASAs Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), an infrared space telescope. The properties of those galaxies were consistent with high rates of star formation, Wright says, which could be an explanation for the abundant heat. But one infrared-bright galaxy that hasnt yet been explained is known by a catalog number, WISE J224436.12. Its an especially red object, and images show what appears to be a galaxy. In a 2015 paper about candidate homes for extraterrestrial civilizations, Wright and colleagues gave it an A, writing that it deserves further study to understand its superlative nature.
Its probably an extreme starburst galaxy, Wright says now. I would love for someone to get a spectrum of itthat is, to break down its light into its individual wavelengths. This would reveal if it shows high levels of star formation, explaining its infrared brightness, or if something else is going on.
Elements of Surprise
No star should look like that.
We dont know if Antoni Przybylski actually said that back in April 1960, when the Polish-Australian astronomer was using a telescope to study fast-moving stars in southern skies. We do know that he made an astonishing discovery.
Przybylskis Star, as it is now known, is about twice the diameter and four times the mass of the sun, and its surface is several thousand degrees hotter than the suns. Those traits make the star impressive but not extraordinary.
What elevates the star to true weirdness is its spectrum. Each chemical element leaves a unique imprint in the spectrum, and the spectrum of Przybylskis Star places it in a class known as chemically peculiar stars that show unusual abundances of different elements.
Przybylski identified barium, strontium, plus all 15 rare Earth elements in the star. And later research added most of the actinidesradioactive elements such as neptunium, plutonium, and curium. These are all short-lived elementsthey have half-lives of as little as a year or so, Wright says. But the star has been there for millions of years, so the elements should have decayed away.
Charles Cowley, a professor emeritus at the University of Michigan who has led several studies of the star, says the default explanation for the odd chemistry is that the elements are levitated to the surface by magnetic fields and radiation pressure from below.
To me thats rather shaky, but we havent known anything better, says Cowley. But there are many possibilities that have to do with dumping material on the surface from the surroundings. The star might have ingested a planet with high concentrations of the odd elements, for example. Or it might have passed through an interstellar cloud laced with the elements, especially if the cloud contained debris from the collision between two dense stellar corpses known as neutron stars, which produce rare earths and other heavy elements.
On the other hand, it has been informally proposed that perhaps the radioactive elements were dumped into the star by a civilization inhabiting its planets. On Earth, its been suggested that to get rid of nuclear waste, we might launch it into the sun, says Brian Lacki, a postdoctoral researcher who compiled the Exotica Catalog. Some people have wondered, well, if we could do it, could an extraterrestrial intelligence do it? In a particular type of star, the nuclear waste could stay at the surface and be seen in the spectrum.
Cowley, for one, puts his money on the colliding-neutron-star hypothesis. Weve seen evidence of colliding neutron stars, but weve never seen any evidence of extraterrestrial life anywhere, he says. I dont know any reason why it couldnt happen that way because there are so many sun-like stars and probably many Earth-like planets, but we just dont know at this point.
Taking a Dip
Few astronomical objects have generated as much buzz as Tabbys (or Boyajians) Star. Observations by the planet-hunting Kepler space telescope showed that the stars light flickers irregularly, dropping by as much as 22 percent for up to several days at a time. The most likely explanation for the dips is that something is passing in front of the star, partially blocking it from view.
The nature of that something caught peoples attention when Wright suggested it might be alien megastructures. But a years-long study by Tabetha Boyajian, for whom the star is named, ruled out that possibility. Observations showed that some forms of energy shine through the dips in starlight, suggesting that the star is being eclipsed not by solid panels but by swarms of smaller objects surrounded by dustsuch as comets or the remnants of a destroyed moon.
Astronomers are looking for more of these dipper stars, though, in hopes of pinpointing what causes the drops in light. One recently reported example listed in the Exotica Catalog is VVV-WIT-07 (WIT stands for What is This?). During eight years of observations, it showed sudden, irregular drops in brightness of 30 to 40 percent, with one drop of about 80 percent. Its a one-in-a-billion object, says Roberto Saito, a researcher at Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina in Brazil, who led the project.
Saito and his colleagues suggest the star may be eclipsed by a planetary ring system many times larger than Saturns, by a ring of comets, or by a lumpy or warped disk of dust.
Edward Schmidt, an emeritus professor of astronomy at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, recently identified 21 more dipper stars. He used data-mining tools to comb through a database of 14 million objects, then studied details of the candidate stars from other studies. His discoveries fell into two distinct groups. One group of stars showed dips that are similar to Tabbys Star, while the other group flickered much more rapidly. And when Schmidt studied the characteristics of the stars, he found that some of them are about the same mass and in the same stage of life as the sun, while the others are red giantsold, bloated stars that are near the ends of their lives.
Many explanations for these stars is that something is passing in front of them, but the fact that the stars all fall within a narrow range of properties suggests that may not be it, says Schmidt, who is preparing a list of additional dipper stars found in another region of the sky. Extraterrestrial intelligence is a low-probability explanation but its a possibility, and the SETI people ought to be looking at these stars.
The Hole in the Galaxy
NGC 247 is a beautiful spiral galaxy that we see almost edge-on. Its smaller than the Milky Way, but it contains some bright nurseriesdense gaseous regions where new stars form. Its most unusual feature, though, is a dark void on one side of the galaxys core, which looks like a hole has been punched through the disk. The region contains a few old, faint stars but almost no young, bright ones.
Initially, astronomers suggested that the void might have been caused by gravitational interactions with part of another galaxy. More recent research suggests the void could have formed when a blob of dark mattertheoretical, so far, undetected material that is estimated to account for 27 percent of the universeplunged through the disk like a rock through tissue paper. The impact would have scattered stars and blown away the gas and dust for making more stars.
Or there could be an even weirder explanation, says Lacki.The SETI community hasnt paid much attention to it, but if you have extraterrestrial intelligences that build Dyson Spheres and have interstellar travel, what would that society look like? he asks. They might start by building a sphere around their own star, then expand to nearby stars, building a Dyson Sphere around each star that they arrive at. That might look like a hole in a galaxy that grows as they expand. NGC 247 reminds me of that. The hole is probably natural, but we cant be absolutely sure.
The Exotica Catalog lists a few other odd galaxies that could be home to vast civilizations. We know that the universe is capable of giving rise to an intelligent, technologically capable species, says Siemion. And if you think even further, one could imagine that extremely advanced technologiesmillions, maybe billions, of years more advanced than oursmight even have capabilities that would manifest on cosmological scales.
We are building new telescopes that will make looking for these things easier, says Shostak. The Vera C. Rubin Observatory, under construction in Chile, will in the next few years be able to observe the entire sky every few nightsover and overand therefore show anything that changes.
With new instruments and the imagination required for all scientific discovery, astronomers may find the advanced civilizations Frank Drake once dreamed ofor the most mundane of explanations for the puzzles presented by the universe.

Social app Parler apparently receives funding from the conservative Mercer family – The Verge
Social media app Parler receives financial backing from conservative hedge-fund investor Robert Mercer and his daughter Rebekah, The Wall Street Journal reported. The app, founded as an alternative to Twitter and Facebook which bills itself as viewpoint neutral saw nearly 1 million new downloads in the days after the US presidential election, rocketing it to the top of the iOS and Google Play app stores.
Parler turned into a kind of de facto home for conservatives protests against the election including the persistent Stop the Steal campaign after the race was called for former Vice President Joe Biden. Several high-profile conservative social media personalities encouraged people to abandon Twitter and Facebook because of their moderation policies, and instead follow them on Parler.
According to the WSJ, the Mercers, known for giving financial support to conservative causes and organizations, including Cambridge Analytica, have not previously revealed their connection to Parler.
In a parley (what Parler calls its posts) on Saturday, a user with the handle Rebekah Mercer and a yellow verified badge said she and John, an apparent reference to Parler CEO John Matze, started Parler to provide a neutral platform for free speech as our founders intended, and that the ever increasing tyranny and hubris of our tech overlords lead the fight against data mining and online free speech.
Matze replied: Bekah is a great friend, an American patriot, and said he was grateful for her support.
Parler did not return a request for comment Saturday. On its website, the Nevada-based company says it is the solution to problems that have surfaced in recent years due to changes in Big Tech policy influenced by various special-interest groups. As the Wall Street Journal notes, Parler doesnt use the content recommendation algorithms that other social platforms do, algorithms which determine what content users ultimately see based on their behavior. Instead, Parler shows users all posts from other users they follow.
A longstanding gripe among conservatives on social media is that Twitter and Facebooks algorithms discriminate against them, shadowbanning their content. So far, theres been no conclusive evidence of such behavior.

How TikTok could be used for disinformation and espionage – CBS News
The popular social media platform TikTok has so far avoided being banned by the Trump administration. But until it addresses concerns over its national security risks, its future in the U.S. remains uncertain.
The Trump administration's deadline for TikTok to find a new owner came and went this week, a missed milestone that would have rendered the social media app effectively banned in the U.S. as of November 12. Instead, the administration granted the video-sharing app a 15-day reprieve. This gives TikTok until November 27 to be divested from its parent company, ByteDance, possibly through convincing government officials to approve a proposed deal with Walmart and Oracle.
The administration's push for a new owner is in large part because national security experts say the issues with TikTok stem from its current owner, ByteDance, a $140-billion Chinese company that also runs Douyin, the Chinese version of the app.
Both Douyin, which boasts 600-million daily users, and TikTok, which has been downloaded on 100 million American devices, use cutting-edge, AI-driven algorithms that analyze exactly how long users watch a video, in order to gauge their interests. The app then presents videos through a "For You" page, amounting to an endless stream of videos uniquely suggested for each user.
It is through this page of recommendations that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) can push disinformation, according to Kara Frederick, a fellow at the Center for a New American Security. Formerly a Pentagon intelligence analyst, Frederick also worked at the National Security Agency.
"If the CCP decided [through] ByteDance to feed you propaganda, you're addicted," she told 60 Minutes. "It is there, and you're going to get more and more and more. And there, they can tweak and see what you like, what you don't like."
Frederick also said TikTok could potentially inject disinformation into the dialogue in the U.S. to sow discord, similar to the way Russia bots amplified the controversy over NFL players kneeling during the national anthem.
"That's low-hanging fruit, I would say," she said. "I wouldn't be surprised if China tried its hand at such things."
Through its algorithm, TikTok could potentially censor content, even if it does not outright ban it. By simply never recommending videos with information, for example, about Tiananmen Square, Tibetan Independence, Hong Kong protests, or Uighur Muslims the company could influence what America's youth sees on a regular basis.
In addition to its potential to control information, TikTok is also collecting vast swaths of it.
Like many social media apps, TikTok asks users for permission for access to their microphone, camera, photos, videos, and contacts. It even collects "keystroke patterns," which is the unique rhythm a person uses to strike their keyboard.
Because China's 2017 Cybersecurity Law requires China-based companies such as TikTok to provide the Chinese government with access to their data, security analysts say this data could be a veritable goldmine for the Chinese government. Hackers linked to Beijing have already stolen the personal data of millions of Americans through security breaches at institutions like Equifax, Anthem, and the U.S. government's Office of Personnel Management.
In an executive order this summer, President Trump addressed TikTok's potential for data mining, writing, "This data collection threatens to allow the Chinese Communist Party access to Americans' personal and proprietary information potentially allowing China to track the locations of Federal employees and contractors, build dossiers of personal information for blackmail, and conduct corporate espionage."
In an interview with 60 Minutes, Vanessa Pappas, TikTok's interim CEO and the third person to helm the company this year, pushed back against the notion that the Chinese government can access the data the company collects. She noted that TikTok does not operate in China and said the data gathered from the U.S. is stored here as well.
"If a government were to request data we will put that in our transparency report and tell you," Pappas said. "And certainly the Chinese government has not requested data, and if they did it would be an emphatic, 'No.'"
But according to Klon Kitchen, who leads technology policy at the conservative Heritage Foundation, the Chinese government does not even have to make the request.
"The national security and cyber security laws of China require them to operate and build their networks in such a fashion as to where the government has unfettered access to their data," Kitchen said. "And so no, the CCP doesn't ask them for information. They don't need to. They have access to the information."
Kitchen said the data TikTok collects, while seemingly harmless, could potentially be used in conjunction with information gathered in previous high-profile hacks. By combining TikTok data with other sources of information, he said, the Chinese government can get a fuller picture of an American they want to target.
"And they begin to understand, 'What is the ideal candidate for someone who gets hired into the U.S. intelligence community?'" Kitchen said. "If they were to try and source a human-intelligence asset, well, they know the exact type of legend or profile that they need to have to be an ideal candidate so they might get hired."
The U.S. Commerce Department in September attempted to ban downloads of TikTok, giving November 12 as a deadline for other internet companies to cease hosting the app.
After TikTok and TikTok content creators filed separate suits, two federal judges temporarily blocked the ban. "It is undisputed that the Secretary's prohibitions will have the effect of preventing Americans from sharing personal communications on TikTok," U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols wrote in one of the decisions.
In a later decision, U.S. District Judge Wendy Beetlestone wrote that the ban would cause the creators to "lose the ability to engage with their millions of followers on TikTok, and the related brand sponsorships."
But the nationwide injunctions did not address the other aspect of Trump's executive order, which requires TikTok to find a new owner. The administration has never explained the requirements for TikTok to keep operating in the United States, nor has it spelled out the consequences should the company fail to be sold by the new deadline of November 27.
In a statement to 60 Minutes, TikTok's New York-based head of corporate communications, Josh Gartner, said he is confident the Oracle deal will pass muster.
"Our U.S.-led security team has put extensive measures in place to guard against access to American user data by any government," Gartner wrote. "In September, we offered to make Oracle our trusted technology partner to further protect and verify the security of U.S. user dataa proposal that the President endorsed. We look forward to implementing this solution to put this issue to rest, once and for all."
Under this deal, Oracle and Walmart would partner with TikTok in the U.S. The two companies would have a combined 20 percent stake in TikTok, with Oracle taking 12.5 percent, and Walmart getting 7.5 percent. China's ByteDance would retain the remaining 80 percent ownership of the company. President Trump in September said he gave his "blessing" to the partnership.
Microsoft had also been in negotiations to acquire TikTok's American operations, but ByteDance rejected their offer in favor of Oracle. Critics of the Oracle deal note the closeness between the company's leadership and the Trump administration: Oracle's Chairman Larry Ellison earlier this year hosted a fundraiser for President Trump, and the company's CEO Safra Catz served on the president's 2016 transition team.
According to a statement from Oracle, the deal would move TikTok's U.S. user data to the American company's cloud infrastructure, thereby making Oracle accountable for data security and privacy.
Oracle would also have access to check the app's source code, but ByteDance would reportedly retain the TikTok's algorithm and technology. The complete makeup of the deal has not been made public, and some in the tech industry fear it may not do enough to solve national security concerns.
"A deal where Oracle takes over hosting without source code and significant operational changes would not address any of the legitimate concerns about TikTok, and the White House accepting such a deal would demonstrate that this exercise was pure grift," former Facebook security chief Alex Stamoswrote on Twitter.
For now, TikTok's future in the U.S. remains unclear. For Kitchen, the video-sharing app is not the only threat the U.S. faces, simply one the U.S. government is beginning to address.
"I would say it's emblematic of the broader concern," Kitchen said. "And that broader concern is the fusion of the Chinese government with its industry. And if the Chinese government would adopt a more responsible posture, then Chinese technology companies could operate in the U.S. market and thrive."

() said its strategic research agreement with Somerset NHS Foundation Trust has helped it achieve a major objective set at its 2018 IPO of growing its anonymised database to over 5mln patient records.
The latest tie-up pulls in 1.1mln unique records from a population of 600,000. In total, the company now has information for 5.6mln patients.
Somerset will receive 1.43mln Sensyne shares, or 1.11% of the company. NHS trusts now own 11.7% of Sensyne.
This new agreement will enable research to improve patient care and accelerate medical research and by helping to grow our overall data set to over 5.6mln patients, will now enable us to broaden our research and expand our therapeutic focus," said chief executive Lord Drayson.
Sensyne specialises in what it describes as the ethical application of clinical artificial intelligence (AI).
Practically, this means it develops software that connects clinicians with patients, while it also works with NHS trusts to garner insights from data using technology developed in partnership with Oxford University.
The NHS holds cradle-to-grave health data that is now largely digitised and focused on medical outcomes.
By applying AI, Sensyne said it is aiming to unearth crucial new information that could improve clinical trial success rates, reduce approval times, or even help researchers find new drug targets.
The idea is to operate in a transparent, fair and effective way with patients and clinicians and the healthcare providers and life science companies that use NHS records.
This means there is a case-by-case approval process in place for each new contract or project. This is not about wholesale data mining.
Sensyne's business model cedes NHS trusts an equity stake in the company, a royalty on revenues that are generated from research undertaken under the SRAs and an investment of up to 250,000 per year over the five-year term.
Since August 2018, the trusts have received equity worth 18.3mlnm, 160,000 of shared revenues and 1mln of technology investment, the company said.
The database, meanwhile, has been used in research into stroke prediction, heart failure and COVID-19, it added.
"Reaching this five million patient milestone with our NHS Trust partners is a great achievement and means that together we have created a world-class medical research capability here in the UK, said CEO Drayson.
Over the past two years, we have demonstrated how Sensyne's clinical AI can be used to deliver better patient care and to accelerate medical research.
We have also shown how our unique partnership model not only delivers clinical benefits but also provides a significant financial return back into the NHS.

Transaction monitoring is not working as it should, according to the Centre for Financial Crime and Security Studies (CFCS), which highlights cost as a main concern.
Matthew Redhead, associate fellow at the CFCS part of think tank the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) spoke at the Sibos conference in October about the many additional expenses associated with monitoring technology, such as technical and vendor support, that can create friction with chief financial officers.
One of the biggest costs involved is getting organizational data in order. Many financial institutions struggle with the quality and the quantity of data, some of which has been built up over decades.
To effectively monitor transactional data, the organization must understand it, determine the risk for each type of transaction involved and then ensure it is clean for effective detection, says Ted Sausen, director and anti-money laundering (AML) subject matter expert at Nice Actimize.
Since institutions must comply with regulatory mandates, some are left with no option but to undertake monitoring with inefficient operational processes.
It is a vicious circle where compliance is seen as a cost centre, which prevents proper funding for implementing effective technologies and processes to deal with transaction monitoring requirements, says Jose Caldera, chief product officer at Acuant.
