On My Mind: The Solution To Gun Violence? More Guns, Apparently – WFAE

You know, maybe some of us have been thinking the wrong way about the gun problem in America all along.

Weve spent so much time mourning the victims of mass shootings, including 18 who died in the two most recent events, the one in metro Atlanta and the one in Boulder, Colorado.

Thats 18 lives cut short, 18 families who lost a father or mother or spouse or child, 18 people who left behind hundreds of others who will never get over what happened.

Those people are feeling pain, for sure. But what about the pain of the American gun owner?

They are clearly hurting, too. You can tell by how they react to the latest mass murder.

The conservative talk-show host Erick Erickson, out of Atlanta, wrote a heartfelt piece the other day saying how he doesnt really like guns, and how he understands the desire to control them. This led him to propose hang on, Im doublechecking my notes here yep, this is what he proposes: to give a federally allocated handgun to every single American.

This is the theory of mutually assured destruction weve got nukes, and Russias got nukes, and we dont shoot ours at them because we know theyd shoot theirs at us. Although, to Ericksons point, it would seem more fair if EVERY country had nukes. Whats poor Canada going to do when the bombs start going off?

Then theres state Sen. Tom Corbin, of South Carolina, who is clearly in deep pain over gun violence. Because he has introduced a bill to wait, let me read this again OK, yep: He wants to make everyone over 17 who can own a gun a legal member of a militia. Basically, he wants to turn South Carolina into a standing army.

His idea is that the Second Amendment refers to a well-regulated militia, and the federal government cant confiscate guns from a militia, so the oppressed and threatened gun owners of South Carolina would be safe to keep their firearms.

I wonder if Dylann Roof, who killed nine Black church members at Bible study in Charleston back in 2015, would be arguing that he was just part of a militia, and, you know, shooting people is what militias do.

Its clear that by proposing any kind of reasonable gun control, some of us are bruising the feelings of a large segment of the gun-owning population the segment that wants nothing more for a peaceful America than to give everybody a gun and have nobody be able to take it away.

So make sure to remember those folks, too, the next time we have a mass shooting. And the next. And the next. And the next.

Brain Tracking: Unraveling Mysteries of the Human Mind – WGEM

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (WGEM) For the first time ever, neuroscientists at UCLA are measuring human brain waves while a person is in motion.

Theyre observing epilepsy patients with previously implanted brain sensors.

Those sensors are in the section of the brain linked to memory and a persons navigation.

We have them come in and we're able to record their brain activity from this device, explained Nanthia Suthana, PhD, a neuroscientist at David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

The patients wore a specially designed backpack with a wireless system that captured brain waves and eye movements in real time.

The researchers instructed patients to explore an empty room, find a hidden spot, and remember it.

And we're able to look at the activity deep in the brain, in an area that we know is important for memory. It's actually an area that is first affected in Alzheimers disease, Suthana described.

Scientists found the brain waves were stronger when the participants returned to search for a hidden spot or saw another person approach the location.

So, we're very interested in how this area works, such that we can inform potential future therapies for treatments of Alzheimer's disease, shared Suthana.

Its research helping scientists map out mysteries of the human mind.

The scientists say earlier studies in rodents showed the animals brains worked in similar ways to help them keep track of their location, but prior to developing the wireless backpack, the studies couldnt be replicated in humans because imaging machines would require them to be tethered in one place.

The UCLA team has made the backpack available to other researchers to speed discoveries about brain disorders.

System on Chips And The Modern Day Motherboards – Analytics India Magazine

The SoC is the new motherboard.

Data centres are no longer betting on the one-size-fits-all compute. Decades of homogenous compute strategies are disrupted by the need to optimise. Modern-day data centres are embracing purpose-built System on Chip (SoC) designs to have more control over peak performance, optimise power consumption and scalability. Thus, customisation of chips has become the go-to solution for many cloud providers. Companies like Google Cloud especially are doubling down on this front.

Google introduced the Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) back in 2015. Today TPUs power services such as real-time voice search, photo object recognition, and interactive language translation. TPUs drive DeepMinds powerful AlphaGo algorithms, which outclassed the worlds best Go player. They were later used for Chess and Shogi. Today, TPUs have the power to process over 100 million photos a day. Most importantly, TPUs are also used for Googles search results. The search giant even unveiled OpenTitan, the first open-source silicon root-of-trust project. The companys custom hardware solutions range from SSDs, to hard drives, network switches, and network interface cardsoften in deep collaboration with external partners.

Workloads demand even deeper integration into the underlying hardware.

Just like on a motherboard, CPUs and TPUs come from different sources. A Google data centre consists of thousands of server machines connected to a local network. Google designs custom chips, including a hardware security chip currently being deployed on both servers and peripherals. According to Google Cloud, these chips allow them to securely identify and authenticate legitimate Google devices at the hardware level.

According to the team at GCP, computing at Google is at a critical inflection point. Instead of integrating components on a motherboard, Google focuses more on SoC designs where multiple functions sit on the same chip or on multiple chips inside one package. The company even claimed that the System on Chips is the modern-day motherboard.

To date, writes Amin Vahdat of GCP, the motherboard has been the integration point, where CPUs, networking, storage devices, custom accelerators, memory, all from different vendors blended into an optimised system. However, the cloud providers, especially companies like Google Cloud, AWS which own large data centres, gravitate towards deeper integration in the underlying hardware to gain higher performance at lesser power consumption.

According to ARM acquired by NVIDIA recently renewed interest towards design freedom and system optimisation has led to higher compute utilisation, improved performance-power ratios, and the ability to get more out of a physical datacenter.

For example, AWS Graviton2 instances, using the Arm Neoverse N1 platform, deliver up to 40 percent better price-performance over the previous x86-based instances at a 20 percent lower price. Silicon solutions such as Amperes Altra are designed to deliver performance-per-watt, flexibility, and scalability their customers demand.

The capabilities of cloud instances rely on the underlying architectures and microarchitectures that power the hardware.

Amazon has made its silicon ambitions obvious as early as 2015. Amazon acquired Israel-based Annapurna Labs, known for networking-focused Arm SoCs. Amazon leveraged Annapurna Labs tech to build a custom Arm server-grade chipGraviton2. After its release, Graviton2 locked horns with Intel and AMD, the data centre chip industrys major players. While the Graviton2 instance offered 64 physical cores, AMD or Intel could manage only 32 physical cores.

Last year, AWS even launched custom-built AWS Inferentia chips for the hardware specialisation department. Inferentias performance convinced AWS to deploy them for their popular Alexa services that require state of the art ML for speech processing and other tasks.

Amazons popular EC2 instances are now powered by AWS Inferentia chips that can deliver up to 30% higher throughput and up to 45% lower cost per inference. Whereas, Amazon EC2 F1 instances use FPGAs to enable delivery of custom hardware accelerations. F1 instances are easy to program and come with an FPGA Developer AMI and support hardware level development on the cloud. Examples of target applications that can benefit from F1 instance acceleration include genomics, search/analytics, image and video processing, network security, electronic design automation (EDA), image and file compression and big data analytics.

Followed by AWS Inferentias success in providing customers with high-performance ML inference at the lowest cost in the cloud, AWS is launching Trainium to address the shortcomings of Inferentia. The Trainium chip is specifically optimised for deep learning training workloads for applications including image classification, semantic search, translation, voice recognition, natural language processing and recommendation engines.

The above table is a performance comparison by Anandtech, which shows how the cloud providers can ditch the legacy chip makers, thanks to ARMs license provisions. Even Microsoft is reportedly building an ARM-based processor for Azure data centres. Apart from custom chips thats under wraps, Microsoft too had a shot at silicon success. They have collaborated with AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm Technologies and announced the Microsoft Pluton security processor. The Pluton design builds security directly into the CPU.

To overcome the challenges and realise the opportunities presented by semiconductor densities and capabilities, electronic product cloud companies will look into System-on-a-Chip (SoC) design methodologies of incorporating pre-designed components, also called SoC Intellectual Property (SoC-IP), which can then be integrated into their own algorithms. As SoCs incorporate processors that allow customisation in the layers of software as well as in the hardware around the processors is the reason why even Google Cloud is bullish on this. They even roped in Intel veteran Uri Frank to lead their server chip design efforts. According to Amin Vahdata, VP, GCP, SoCs offer many orders of magnitude better performance with greatly reduced power and cost compared to assembling individual ASICs on a motherboard. The future of cloud infrastructure is bright, and its changing fast, said Vahdat.

Artificial intelligence kept expanding through a turbulent year, with some exceptions – ZDNet

The year 2020 may have been one of turmoil and uncertainty across the globe, but artificial intelligence remained on a steady course of growth and further exploration -- perhaps because of the Covid-19 crisis. Healthcare was a big area for AI investment, and concerns about diversity and ethics grew -- but little action has been taken. Most surprisingly of all, while AI job growth accelerated across the world, it flattened in the US.

These are among the key metrics of AI tracked in the latest release of theAI Index, an annual data update from Stanford University'sHuman-Centered Artificial Intelligence Institute. The index tracks AI growth across a range of metrics, from degree programs to industry adoption.

Here are some key measures extracted from the 222-page index:

AI investments rising: The report cites a McKinsey survey that shows the Covid-19 crisis had no effect on their investment in AI, while 27% actually reported increasing their investment. Less than a fourth of businesses decreased their investment in AI.

AI jobs grow worldwide, flatten in the US:Another key metric is the amount of AI-related jobs opening up. Surprisingly, the US recorded a decrease in its share of AI job postings from 2019 to 2020-the first drop in six years. The total number of AI jobs posted in the US also decreased by 8.2% from 2019 to 2020, from 325,724 in 2019 to 300,999 jobs in 2020. This may be attributable to the mature market in the US, the report's authors surmise. Globally, however, demand for AI skills is on the rise, and has grown significantly in the last seven years. On average, the share of AI job postings among all job postings in 2020 is more than five times larger than in 2013. In 2020, industries focused on information (2.8%); professional, scientific, and technical services (2.5%); and agriculture, forestry, fishing, and hunting (2.1%) had the highest share of AI job postings among all job postings in the US.

AI investment in healthcare increased significantly:The product category of "drugs, cancer, molecular, drug discovery" received the greatest amount of private AI investment in 2020, with more than $13.8 billion, 4.5 times higher than 2019, the report states. "The landscape of the healthcare and biology industries has evolved substantially with the adoption of machine learning," the report's authors state. "DeepMind's AlphaFold applied deep learning technique to make a significant breakthrough in the decades-long biology challenge of protein folding. Scientists use ML models to learn representations of chemical molecules for more effective chemical synthesis planning. PostEra, an AI startup used ML-based techniques to accelerate COVID-related drug discovery during the pandemic."

Generative everything:"AI systems can now compose text, audio, and images to a sufficiently high standard that humans have a hard time telling the difference between synthetic and non-synthetic outputs for some constrained applications of the technology. That promises to generate a tremendous range of downstream applications of AI for both socially useful and less-useful purposes."

AI has a diversity and ethics challenge: In 2019, 45% new U.S. resident AI PhD graduates were white -- by comparison, 2.4% were African American and 3.2% were Hispanic, the report states. Plus, "despite growing calls to address ethical concerns associated with using AI, efforts to address these concerns in the industry are limited. For example, issues such as equity and fairness in AI continue to receive comparatively little attention from companies. Moreover, fewer companies in 2020 view personal or individual privacy risks as relevant, compared with in 2019, and there was no change in the percentage of respondents whose companies are taking steps to mitigate these particular risks."

Computer vision has become industrialized:"Companies are investing increasingly large amounts of computational resources to train computer vision systems at a faster rate than ever before. Meanwhile, technologies for use in deployed systems-like object-detection frameworks for analysis of still frames from videos-are maturing rapidly, indicating further AI deployment."

AI conference attendance up, virtually:An important metric of AI adoption is conference attendance. "That's way up. If anything, Covid-19 may have led to a higher number of people participating in AI research conferences, as the pandemic forced conferences to shift to virtual formats, which in turn led to significant spikes in attendance," the survey's authors contend.

More and more information and research is available: The number of AI journal publications grew by 34.5% from 2019 to 2020 -- a much higher percentage growth than from 2018 to 2019 (19.6%), the report's authors state. "In just the last six years, the number of AI-related publications on arXiv grew by more than six-fold, from 5,478 in 2015 to 34,736 in 2020. AI publications represented 3.8% of all peer-reviewed scientific publications worldwide in 2019, up from 1.3% in 2011."

The Deep by Rivers Solomon, Daveed Diggs, William Hutson, and Jonathan Snipes is captivating and thought-provoking, in the story readers are introduced to an underwater world plagued with horrific historical events intertwined with mysticism.

The novel focuses on the story of the water-dwelling descendants of pregnant African women who were thrown overboard from slave ships: the Wanjiru.

The mermaid-like clan has no long-term memory, instead choosing to live in the moment without the burden of the past. The Wanjuri swim along the sea in ignorant bliss without carrying the weight of memories of the suffering of their past ancestors.

The novel follows the story of Yetu, a member of the Wanjuri who has chosen to carry the burden of being a Historian. It is the job of the Historian, to carry the communitys memories along with the echoes of emotional trauma from such events.

Solomon delves into Yetus characterization through her exploration of identity and self while also discussing the devastations of slavery through fiction.

The multilayered work is dynamic and heart-wrenching as culture, grief, and desire are encompassed in the novel. Yetu is against her responsibility as the Historian because of the physical and emotional undertakings the duty imposed on her mind and body. She doesnt wish for her identity to be consumed with the responsibility of carrying the grievances of the cruel deaths of her ancestors.

Solomons poetic prose and immersive story-telling are apparent throughout the novel as Yetu embarks on a journey of understanding community ties and remembering the past. The novel delves into concepts of identity and personhood as the world is casually LGBTQIA+, includes representations of anxiety, a nonbinary side character, and more.

The Deep is a simple yet complicated novel as it questions the struggle between sacrifice and duty, between tradition and progress, and between vengeance and forgiveness.

12-foot-deep sinkhole ‘accidentally’ discovered near Williams Arts Center The Lafayette – The Lafayette

Last week, a grounds crew was doing standard maintenance outside the Williams Arts Center when they noticed the ground under their feet sounded hollow. Upon investigation, they discovered what lay underneath: a sinkhole, 12 feet deep, about 10 feet long and three feet wide, narrowing to a point on each end.

[The grounds crew] immediately called me and we investigated, and it did indeed sound hollow, Scott Kennedy, Director of Facilities Operations, said. [They] could have opened it up accidentally.

The sinkhole was assessed last Monday by geotechnical engineers from Pennoni Associates, Inc. The sinkhole was opened, and they determined a course of action to remediate the problem before securing the hole with steel plates for the evening, Kennedy explained.

On Tuesday, all loose material that fell into the sinkhole was removed and the ground was compacted, and the following day 16 cubic yards of high flow concrete was installed about halfway up the hole to avoid covering the pipes in the area.

[Wednesday] theyre installing stoneso the hole will be filled, Kennedy said. [Today] we hope to finish with concrete on the top and replace the sidewalk they had to cut out, and then theyll reinstall the bricks.

Geology Professor and Acting Department Head Dru Germanoski, explained that a common misconception of sinkholes is they form suddenly due to an influx of water dissolving rock. The Allentown formation which underlies campus is composed of mostly dolomite with some limestone. Although these rocks do dissolve at a faster rate than other types, water moves through fractures in these rocks over millennia.

As the water is moving through the bedding planes and the fractures, it dissolves them and becomes a positive feedback mechanism where you get more water flow, that can dissolve the rock, a bit more and more water flow because now youve increased the size of the opening, Germanoski explained.

Sometimes pipelines underground can have cracks or breaks that exacerbate the problem, which is common in cities and towns in the Lehigh Valley and other carbonate terrains, Germanoski explained. However, the sinkhole on campus is much smaller than ones often caused or made worse by pipeline breaks.

The geotechnical engineers were not able to pinpoint the cause of this sinkhole because there is no active water break in that area.

The assumption is erosion over timetheres a little bit of staining underneath one pipe, so theyre going to go in and re-cement and secure that, that could have been a slow leak over years, Kennedy said. Were going to camera all the storm lines around Williams, make sure theres no cracks and breaks and storm piping, and theyre also going to do some ground-penetrating radar to make sure there are no other voids in that area.

Kennedy added that they do not expect to find any other voids around Williams because when they poured concrete in to begin filling the sinkhole, it would have drained into another cavity.

The concrete basically creates a giant plug for the bottom of that sinkhole. So, if there is an opening somewhere, that should block it, Kennedy said.

Germanoski noted that there has been a handful of sinkholes on campus since he started working at Lafayette in 1987.

We had one between Van Wickle and Colton chapel, there are a couple that comes to mind. Actually, a couple of different ones on the quad and they have been able to handle them, Germanoski said. They repaired them, and theyve remained stable.

DeepMind is building a team of A.I. researchers in New York – CNBC

LONDON DeepMind, the U.K. artificial intelligence lab acquired by Google in 2014, has quietly hired a team of researchers in New York.

The company widely regarded as one of the leading AI firms in the world hired Facebook AI Research (FAIR) co-founder Rob Fergus to lead its New York team last June. Several people have joined Fergus's team in the last few months and DeepMind is actively recruiting in the city.

"Last year we were delighted to have computer vision and deep learning pioneer Rob Fergus join our team," a DeepMind spokesperson told CNBC. "Rob is based in New York and this exciting role will be a key part of his growing team there."

DeepMind declined to say how many people it has in New York but LinkedIn analysis suggests the number is between 10 and 15. "There is a small core group right now, which we'll carefully grow over time," a spokesperson said. The team is currently working from home but DeepMind said they'll work out of a Google building once lockdown restrictions are lifted.

While FAIR has less than 400 people, DeepMind employs around 1,000 people worldwide, with the bulk of those based at its London headquarters. The remainder are spread across satellite outposts in Mountain View (where Google is headquartered), Alberta, Montreal, and Paris.

New York is home to several prestigious AI labs at universities including New York University and Cornell Tech. But beyond FAIR and Google AI, there aren't many large industry AI labs in the city Google Brain doesn't have a significant presence there, for example.

Fergus is splitting his time across DeepMind and NYU, where he is a professor of computer science at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. He previously spent time at Oxford, MIT, and Caltech and has won a number of awards for his work.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, DeepMind has already hired several intellectual heavyweights in New York. Former Googler Christine Kaeser-Chen joined as a staff research engineer in February and Harvard graduate Ishita Dasgupta joined in December.

DeepMind and FAIR have been battling it out to hire the best AI talent in the world for almost a decade. They're hoping that these top AI researchers, who are sometimes paid around $1 million a year, will be able to create AI technology that can be harnessed by Google and Facebook, respectively.

Fergus co-founded FAIR, which is a direct rival to DeepMind, with AI pioneer Yann LeCun in 2013.
