When Is Decentralized Storage the Right Choice? The New Stack – thenewstack.io

The amount of data created has doubled every year, presenting a host of challenges for organizations: security and privacy issues for starters, but also storage costs. What situations call for that data move to decentralized cloud storage rather than on-prem or even a single public cloud storage setup? What are the advantages and challenges of a decentralized cloud storage solution for data, and how can those be navigated?

On this episode of The New Stack Makerspodcast, Ben Golub, CEO of Storj, and Krista Spriggs, software engineering manager at the company, were joined by Alex Williams, founder and publisher of The New Stack, along with Heather Joslyn, TNS features editor. Golub and Spriggs talked about how decentralized storage for data makes sense for organizations concerned about cloud costs, security, and resiliency.

The best situations for using Storj or other companies that offer decentralized data storage, Golub said, are those in which cloud costs need to be minimized, where security is a special concern, and where keeping the data close to where its being created and consumed matters most.

What were finding is for something like 80% of the data thats being created, and where most of the growth is, this decentralized approach just makes sense, the CEO said.

Security concerns alone make a strong case for decentralized storage, Golub said. Anytime youre storing data in clear text in a centralized location, its one mistake or one bad hacker away from being compromised, he said.And ultimately I think we probably dont want a world where 80% of the cloud is controlled by three of the largest companies on the planet who happen to all be in the business of selling data.

At Storj, the DevOps team Spriggs oversees drink their own champagne, as she said, keeping the most recent 12 hours data in hot files and sending the rest to Storj DCS. Its important for organizations to keep data long term, she noted, because its usefulness isnt always apparent when its first created and collected.

Take, for instance, data lakes, Spriggs said: A lot of that data, you dont know how valuable it is until you have a question. And if you dont store all of the data that you have available to store, you might be painting yourself into a corner where you cant ask the type of question that you want to ask. And youll never get that data back.

By contrast, being able to easily locate old data, she said, really unlocks different types of problems that you can solve, because you suddenly dont have this big blocker to face.

Decentralized data storage, Golub said, is destined to become more widely adopted as organizations themselves grow more distributed. If we look back in 10 years well see that decentralized cloud in general, not just decentralized storage, makes sense the same kind of sense that we realized that decentralized telecommunications did 20 years ago, when the internet came about right. It is inherently faster, inherently better, inherently more scalable and inherently more flexible.

The Google cloud engineer certification test can take up to two hours, and covers many topics, including setting up a cloud environment, planning and configuration, deployment, operations, and configuring access and security. Many of the fundamental principles are deploying services on other cloud platforms like AWS and Azure. However, there are some different tradeoffs in how services that support storage, scalability, redundancy, security and analytics are set up and optimized.

Flexify.IO CTO says multi-cloud migration within easy reach – TechTarget

Flexify.IO wants to make it easier for customers to adopt storage across multiple clouds.

The company's flagship Flexify.IO software provides object storage migration and virtualization in public or private clouds that acts agnostic to individual cloud APIs.

Flexify.IO does not store or modify customer data. Instead, it allows applications or data to be stored on multiple clouds and accessed as if it were a single storage source. No coding changes are needed for a user's application to swap between the APIs of multiple clouds and there is no need to migrate data off any cloud infrastructure as Flexify.IO migrates directly to the target clouds, according to the company.

Pricing for these migrations, however, is based upon the particular cloud providers being used as well as other factors such as a cloud provider's egress traffic fees and the chosen data center location. Users can discontinue Flexify.IO after a migration and access their data from the respective clouds they've migrated to as well.

Sergey Kandaurov, Flexify.IO co-founder and CTO, says the streamlining of APIs through Flexify.IO will allow users to take better advantage of multi-cloud environments to select the best price for storage as well as the access speeds needed for their applications, simultaneously avoiding the potential cost lock-in with the major public clouds.

Originally, Flexify.IO only supported the migration of object data from Amazon's S3 to Azure's Blob storage. Since then, however, Flexify.IO has expanded to support 20 different public and private cloud services such as Wasabi, Alibaba Cloud, Backblaze and Dell EMC ECS. Kandaurov said the company runs compatibility checks to add more clouds based upon client needs.

Flexify.IO was first prototyped in 2016 by Kandaurov and his two co-founders, Sergey Smirnov and Alexey Schepetkov, with 2018 marking the software's first public release. The company formed a partnership with Backblaze in early 2020 and the Flexify.IO software is now the data migration offering for Backblaze customers.

In this Q&A, Kandaurov outlines what made him and his co-founders consider multi-cloud storage a viable market, what sort of challenges their business faces for growth and how they see the services offered by Flexify.IO evolving.

What was the niche you saw Flexify.IO filling when you opened your doors?

Sergey Kandaurov: When we decided to start with some market research and the prototype, we had a realization that cloud storage specifically is becoming a commodity Businesses, enterprises especially, would seek out multi-cloud.

They wouldn't like to stick with a single provider. They'd be looking for ways to use services from multiple providers and to move their application and data between providers.

We thought it would happen a little bit earlier but there are some factors, namely egress fees and lock-in companies create, so eventually we focused our business on eliminating any lock-ins for application owners, for data owners, that [major public] cloud providers build for them.

If someone is using Flexify.IO, they're not locked into Flexify.IO. We do not change data; we do not encode data. Sergey KandaurovCo-founder and CTO, Flexify.IO

We focused on helping companies overcome those lock-ins and be able to freely migrate data and applications between various cloud offerings.

How do you expect customers to use Flexify.IO compared to other software-as-a-service offerings?

Kandaurov: If someone is using Flexify.IO, they're not locked into Flexify.IO. We do not change data; we do not encode data.

We want to have recurring customers, but we also understand that at this stage of multi-cloud adoption, most enterprises just want to have a solution to move from one cloud to another. We do provide this service, but what we've found with some of those customers is they actually become recurring.

First of all, because of the first migration project they have more migration projects. It's basically like an Uber that's a one-time service since it takes you from A to B, but it's actually recurring because you'll have a need to move again. Same with Flexify.IO migration.

So, most of our revenue comes from one-time migrations, but it creates a market to upsell recurring features of data replication and multi-cloud storage.

What determines future partnerships and compatibility?

Kandaurov: We add features mostly based upon our customer requests.

Sometimes we have a customer come to us to migrate data onto Backblaze from another provider we do not support yet. We perform a compatibility test and add support for this provider as a high priority. The last one we added in this way was OVHcloud.

Sometimes we reach out to providers, sometimes providers reach out to us. We realized just adding support for cloud providers would not bring us a lot of business, it would just sit somewhere on a list.

For us, the main decision to support a cloud provider or not support a cloud provider is their willingness to actually market multi-cloud [support] or at least our migration to that specific provider.

What are some challenges Flexify.IO has faced in these early years?

Kandaurov: The first thing that prevents multi-cloud from wide adoption, and it's industry-wide, is traffic fees, especially egress traffic fees. They become the biggest portion of your bill and that's especially true in multi-cloud environments. It slows down our growth.

Speaking specifically about Flexify.IO, we are still self-funded. We can't afford to spend big dollars on purchasing expensive marketing or hiring salespeople. This the reason we currently position ourselves more like a technology enabler. We provide technology to our bigger partners and those bigger partners will market Flexify.IO as part of the whole combined offering.

That's something we're looking to change, but at this point that's one of the biggest challenges.

How do you see Flexify.IO evolving and growing?

Kandaurov: We see ourselves adding support for more services.

We'd extend from only supporting object storage to other services, like structured data [and] databases, notification services. The issue is similar, different cloud providers have different APIs to their proprietary databases. It really prevents and complicates diversifying cloud offerings. It prevents companies from moving their applications to different clouds or picking and choosing.

The second area is we will work on top of the object storage we provide now by adding premium value to what providers give, like data deduplication.

Customers and companies are paying for storing that duplicated data but it's completely unnecessary. Some deduplication would enable some actual savings that's provided when you start using Flexify.IO.

Another related area that we see as a potential development area is copy management. Instead of making a physical copy of your data you could make a virtual copy, again saving on the physical storage.

We're also considering analytical features, such as when we collect and analyze statistics on how applications interact with data or work with data again, optimizing performance and optimizing costs.

Central Pa. man had hundreds of files of child pornography after being caught with the images twice – PennLive

A Cumberland County man is in custody this week after investigators found he had downloaded hundreds of files of child pornography onto his phone.

Riley Steven Powley, 19, is charged with 50 counts of possession of child pornography and one count of felony criminal use of a communication device, according to online court dockets.

According to the affidavit filed against Powley on July 9, investigators with the Attorney Generals Child Predator Section received a tip in April 2020 about hundreds of files of child pornography being uploaded to Dropbox account, a cloud storage service. The Dropbox was under the name Riley Powley.

Dropbox provided Powleys information to investigators, who confirmed the suspected activity. According to the affidavit, many of the files included prepubescent boys. Over the course of the next several months, police ordered search warrants for the contents of his accounts which brought up hundreds of files of child pornography.

Eventually, investigators tracked Powley to a home in East Pennsboro Township, where he lived with his parents, according to the affidavit. Powley was the only one home when investigators searched the residence on July 8.

When investigators first asked Powley about his use of cloud storage services like Google Docs and Dropbox, he claimed he only used them for school, according to the affidavit. Investigators then said they were there regarding illegal internet activity and he acknowledged that he knew what they were talking about.

Powley said he first saw child pornography when he was still in middle school and had been downloading it on and off ever since, according to the affidavit.

In 2016, he said his parents caught him downloading child pornography, so he deleted everything he had, according to the affidavit. He would have been at most 4 at the time.

A year later, he started looking for and saving the explicit images again, he told police. Thats when he started using Dropbox, as well as his phones photo gallery.

About a year ago, Powley received a message from Dropbox that his account was disabled because of child pornography, according to the affidavit. He then decided to save the images to his phone gallery with a password protecting the files.

Powley told investigators that he was regularly looking at the images to pleasure himself, and described his preferences for content that was of children only and boys as young as ten, according to the affidavit.

Although Powley admitted to having sexual thoughts about children, he denied ever doing it, according to the affidavit. He said he has had sexual thoughts about children hed seen in public or at work, but reiterated that he had never acted on these thoughts.

Investigators are still going through Powleys phone, where he told them they would find 300 files of child pornography.

Powley was arraigned and placed in Cumberland County Prison on $50,000 monetary bail, which he has been unable to post. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 26.

Cost Overruns and Misgovernance: Two Threats to Your Cloud Data Journey – Datanami

So youre moving data into the cloud. Thats great! After all, cloud compute and storage can supercharge your organizations digital strategy. But you should also be aware of new challenges that you will face, including unexpected cloud fees and the difficulty of governing data as it traverses on prem, cloud, and edge locations.

These are some of the conclusions of a recent IDC survey commissioned by Seagate titled Future-Proofing Storage, which surveyed 1,050 American tech executives at companies with over 1,000 employees.

Among the more eye-catching statistics to come out of the survey was this: 99% of respondents said they incur planned or unplanned egress fees at least on an annual basis. Companies are moving lots of data to lots of different places, and its accelerating.

This is the new model, says Rags Srinivasan, the senior director of growth verticals at Seagate. In this data age, what you see is data is not just going to stay in one place. It moves from edge to cloud, even from cloud to a private cloud or to another cloud where it needs to be. The data is in motion.

On average, the egress fees accounted for 6% of the monthly bill from cloud providers, according to the survey. While the report didnt specify what percentage of the fees were unexpected, egress fees in general are a huge concern, Srinivasan says.

When you look at the number one concern for most of them, they dont know yet what the egress charge is going to be, he tells Datanami. They may not have come to a point [or] unlocked the use cases that requires them to get the data. So its going to come as an unplanned or surprising charge.

None of the major public cloud providers charge anything for moving data into their clouds, but they all charge to move data out. Microsoft Azure charges the least: $0.087 per GB for up to 10 TB per month. Amazon Web Services charges $0.09 for the same amount, and Google Cloud charges $0.12.

Cloud storage and data egress fees make up just part of the monthly bill that organizations receive from their cloud providers. The companies charge differently for the various compute instances they provide. And if you use a premium service, such as Google Cloud Big Query or Azure Synapse Analytics, there will be additional fees on top of that.

Organizations need to better understand not only how theyre storing the data, but how theyre accessing their data. Cloud providers will charge differently depending on where the data is stored and what APIs are used to access it. It is not always directly obvious, so organizations should plan some time to plot it out to avoid any surprises, Srinivasan says.

When you go look at the cloud, there are multiple tiers, he says. Which one do I pick? Do I pick one based on the price? But then it comes with restrictions, like if you want to access the data, you need to wait for four hours. Or if you want to analyze the data, it needs to be moved to a different tier, which costs a different price.

Your CIO may desire to have all of your applications running in containerized microservices in the cloud, and pull the data out through REST APIs. That is a worthy goal, if not a perfect fit for every application type.

Moving to the cloud is a great time to reassess the architecture of your data empire and, if possible, do some strategic pruning and re-development work, especially for on-prem applications that were developed over the course of years, if not decades.

Quoting his former CIO, Srinivasan says: Moving to the cloud is not just picking up and going, he says. You need to do a refactoring of your architecture. You first need to look at where is all my data stacked. How many complex workflows do I have?

Things are easier if youre deploying a brand-new application in the cloud. Its a no-brainer today to make it a containerized microservice that seeks data stored in modern object store, database, or file system. The hard part is re-thinking the application design when moving legacy apps to the cloud.

Yes, I can unlock a use case quickly if it is completely a born-in-the-cloud workload, Srinivasan says. But in shifting workloads from your private cloud or your data closets, you need that architectural discipline.

Once you have gone through that re-architecting exercise and re-organized your application and data estate, then you will have a much easier time of managing that data going forward, whether its on prem, in the cloud, or somewhere in between.

The other major takeaway from the IDC survey is the looming challenge of managing and governing all this data as it flows from the edge to the core, from on-prem to the public cloud, from end-points to third-party data centers, and everywhere in between.

The average enterprise expects their stored data to grow 30% annually, IDC says. Using this growth rate as a general guide, we can assume that an organization managing 50PB of data today will store upwards of 65PB of data the following year, it says. The challenge with this data growth trajectory is that spending on IT infrastructure is only expected to grow in the single digits (and may even remain flat for many enterprises).

Keeping on top of that growing data empire will be challengingand expensive. One out of five tech execs say theyre already spending $1 million annually on storage. With data growing 30%, just managing that data to keep the lights onlet alone doing innovative and transformative things with itwill require a balancing act.

IDC found that, on average, data transfers amounted to 140TB per transaction. But there is so much data being generated that 78% of organizations say they cant rely on the Internet or private networks anymore, and so they transport data on physical media. The average size of data transfers for these transactions is a whopping 473TB of data, the survey found.

The data volumes are growing, particularly around image data, Srinivasan says. The IDC DataAge survey estimates that 175 zettabytes of data will be created by 2025. Were only keeping about one-third of the data we create now, Srinivasan says. As cloud storage becomes more ubiquitous and use cases keep appearing, more of that data will be kept, which underscores the need for better data management, including data governance.

What they need is a data sovereignty policy, a better management policy, Srinivasan says. If they have the policy, there is value in the data.

Hard Knocks: How A Schoolboy Rugby Injury Inspired This Tech Entrepreneur – Forbes

Fran Villalba Segarra

An unfortunate sports injury proved to be a lucky break for a teenage Fran Villalba Segarra.Faced with eight weeks in a plaster cast and unable to move, he passed the time teaching himself to code. After building several successful products, in 2017 he created Internxt, with the goal of making decentralized cloud storage accessible to anyone with an internet connection, and keeping their privacy protected.

Villalba Segarra was born in Valencia, Spain, but at 13 moved to the U.K. to attend school. A keen rugby player, he began playing for his school team, but a year later his promising rugby career was cut short after breaking his knee.

I started learning to code, with the help of YouTube, out of a mix of boredom and curiosity, he says. While all my colleagues were having fun over the summer, I started working on some small tech projects.

One of his early projects was OneSite, a free web building platform that he later sold to a large Spanish web hosting company. Villalba Segarra began working at cloud company Hostinger where he spent five years honing his tech skills and knowledge, before moving to The Netherlands to study for a degree in international business administration. During his final year at university he used his savings to start building Internxt, with a prime focus on privacy.

Privacy is a fundamental human right, he says. Id seen the emergence of blockchain technology and recognized its relevance in helping to protect those privacy rights in the context of the internet and cloud industry.

Internxt is developing a suite of services, and launched its first, cloud storage app Internxt Drive, an alternative to the likes of Google Drive and Dropbox, a year ago. The goal was to create a cloud storage service that gives the user total control, security, and privacy of their files. It is based on a system that Villalba Segarra insists is more secure and more private than mainstream cloud-based apps such as those offered by tech giants like Google.

For the big tech companies protecting their users privacy conflicts with their business model, which is to use your data to serve you targeted ads, and they collect more data than what is needed, he says.

Within a year of its launch, Internxt Drive had acquired over a million active users, suggesting a growing interest in privacy-friendly services.

Villalba Segarra says: Unlike other cloud storage providers like Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive, Apple iCloud, etc., Internxt Drive features zero-knowledge encryption. Files are uploaded and client-side encrypted, so only you hold the decryption key of these.

Information is also stored in a highly decentralized way. Internxts distributed architecture uses servers based all over the world. Users files are fragmented into tiny shards before being encrypted and then distributed across these multiple servers.

A server never holds a whole file, but instead, an encrypted shard of it, which only you can decrypt, says Villalba Segarra. Decentralized cloud architectures are becoming increasingly popular, because their features are cheaper, more secure, robust, private, and reliable than those offered by centralized architectures.

The companys month-on-month growth rate is currently 30%, which the founder is confident can be sustained throughout the remainder of 2021 and 2022. Internxt recently closed a $1 million seed round with investment from Angels Capital, a European VC fund owned by Juan Roig, Miami-based The Venture City and ESADE University.

The funds will be used to take the business to the next stage of growth by hiring more engineers and investing in marketing. Turnover for 2021 is on track to reach 1 million, ($1.9 million) with a forecast of 4 million ($4.74 million) in 2022. Internxt Photos, a rival to Google Photos, has already been launched, and will be followed by Internxt Mail and file transfer app Internxt Send.

Villalba Segarra believes his innovation-first company has the power to change the status-quo across many different industries, and the potential to solve some of humanitys biggest problems.

Weve started with privacy, but there are many more challenges to be tackled, for example, climate change, he says. We have an opportunity to make a true impact in society, in a way that we think makes the most sense. Wed love to become the next Unicorn.

Succeeding in such a tough tech sector demands resilience, and Villalba Segarra has overcome many challenges along the way, including that early setback when a promising rugby career was brought to a premature end.

He says: Everyone has issues, and no ones personal or professional lives are perfect. To succeed in life, you need plenty of endurance and resilience, and to be ready to fail, adapt and react to lifes setbacks.

Quantum Computing Is Coming. What Can It Do? – Harvard Business Review

Digital computing has limitations in regards to an important category of calculation called combinatorics, in which the order of data is important to the optimal solution. These complex, iterative calculations can take even the fastest computers a long time to process. Computers and software that are predicated on the assumptions of quantum mechanics have the potential to perform combinatorics and other calculations much faster, and as a result many firms are already exploring the technology, whose known and probable applications already include cybersecurity, bio-engineering, AI, finance, and complex manufacturing.

Quantum technology is approaching the mainstream. Goldman Sachs recently announced that they could introduce quantum algorithms to price financial instruments in as soon as five years. Honeywell anticipates that quantum will form a $1 trillion industry in the decades ahead. But why are firms like Goldman taking this leap especially with commercial quantum computers being possibly years away?

To understand whats going on, its useful to take a step back and examine what exactly it is that computers do.

Lets start with todays digital technology. At its core, the digital computer is an arithmetic machine. It made performing mathematical calculations cheap and its impact on society has been immense. Advances in both hardware and software have made possible the application of all sorts of computing to products and services. Todays cars, dishwashers, and boilers all have some kind of computer embedded in them and thats before we even get to smartphones and the internet. Without computers we would never have reached the moon or put satellites in orbit.

These computers use binary signals (the famous 1s and 0s of code) which are measured in bits or bytes. The more complicated the code, the more processing power required and the longer the processing takes. What this means is that for all their advances from self-driving cars to beating grandmasters at Chess and Go there remain tasks that traditional computing devices struggle with, even when the task is dispersed across millions of machines.

A particular problem they struggle with is a category of calculation called combinatorics. These calculations involve finding an arrangement of items that optimizes some goal. As the number of items grows, the number of possible arrangements grows exponentially. To find the best arrangement, todays digital computers basically have to iterate through each permutation to find an outcome and then identify which does best at achieving the goal. In many cases this can require an enormous number of calculations (think about breaking passwords, for example). The challenge of combinatorics calculations, as well see in a minute, applies in many important fields, from finance to pharmaceuticals. It is also a critical bottleneck in the evolution of AI.

And this is where quantum computers come in. Just as classical computers reduced the cost of arithmetic, quantum presents a similar cost reduction to calculating daunting combinatoric problems.

Quantum computers (and quantum software) are based on a completely different model of how the world works. In classical physics, an object exists in a well-defined state. In the world of quantum mechanics, objects only occur in a well-defined state after we observe them. Prior to our observation, two objects states and how they are related are matters of probability.From a computing perspective, this means that data is recorded and stored in a different way through non-binary qubits of information rather than binary bits, reflecting the multiplicity of states in the quantum world. This multiplicity can enable faster and lower cost calculation for combinatoric arithmetic.

If that sounds mind-bending, its because it is. Even particle physicists struggle to get their minds around quantum mechanics and the many extraordinary properties of the subatomic world it describes, and this is not the place to attempt a full explanation. But what we can say is quantum mechanics does a better job of explaining many aspects of the natural world that classical physics does, and it accommodates nearly all of the theories that classical physics has produced.

Quantum translates, in the world of commercial computing, to machines and software that can, in principle, do many of the things that classical digital computers can and in addition do one big thing classical computers cant: perform combinatorics calculations quickly. As we describe in our paper, Commercial Applications of Quantum Computing, thats going to be a big deal in some important domains. In some cases, the importance of combinatorics is already known to be central to the domain.

As more people turn their attention to the potential of quantum computing, applications beyond quantum simulation and encryption are emerging:

The opportunity for quantum computing to solve large scale combinatorics problems faster and cheaper has encouraged billions of dollars of investment in recent years. The biggest opportunity may be in finding more new applications that benefit from the solutions offered through quantum. As professor and entrepreneur Alan Aspuru-Guzik said, there is a role for imagination, intuition, and adventure. Maybe its not about how many qubits we have; maybe its about how many hackers we have.
