PracticeEvolve announce Pathway to the Cloud allowing firms to level up – Today’s Conveyancer

PracticeEvolve Group incorporating SOS and Linetime, have announced a Pathway to the Cloud strategy available to all law firms globally, ultimately leading to a fully browser-based cloud solution called EvolveCloud.

The approach will see PracticeEvolve initially offer cloud hosting options for their existing SOS, Linetime and PracticeEvolve desktop applications, as a stepping stone to a fully native, browser-based, Cloud solution.

David Boland, Global CEO of PracticeEvolve Group, says uncompromising native Cloud software is fast becoming a realistic option for firms:

Our firms have become increasingly savvy in terms of technology, and that has accelerated during Covid. They are looking at the future and are now seeing how Cloud can empower them to adapt to evolving opportunities and work practices. Firms have recognised buying into a provider for the future is imperative to level up their own businesses and their expectation, now, is for native fully Cloud-based software.

Over the last three years, we have been optimising our existing technology for Cloud, while at the same time developing a completely new native Cloud solution that will shape how law firms think when selecting software for the future, this is what we call pathway to the Cloud

David highlights how firms have already identified the need to be better connected:

Suggesting the events of the last year have led to heightened demand is somewhat disingenuous to firms, in my opinion. Firms were already considering how the world was changing before 2020. They have already identified how they need to be better connected with clients, with their staff and with software.

David continues to outline the approach will be stepped in line with worldwide technology developments which are already driving demand:

This is especially true when we consider the impact global developments such as 5G will have on us all. 5G is expected to relieve businesses of the financial burden of deployment and maintenance of hardware-based infrastructure by shifting to a Cloud environment. In parallel, we are seeing a growing workforce who have grown up using apps and browsers, and they expect flexibility in the software and the ability to work whenever and wherever they are.

As a legal technology provider, we are taking responsibility to deliver native Cloud software and apps to deliver on those needs for the future of law firms. But in parallel were ensuring that our products created prior to mainstream adoption of Cloud are fully optimised to take advantage of what Cloud has to offer, particularly location independence and mobility.

Matt Fiske-Jackson, head of Cloud Sales at PracticeEvolve adds:

As is my role, Im constantly talking with firms who have made it clear a Cloud solution is needed. Often, practice management systems are the last software requiring a server and I am seeing the fast-growing demands of firms wanting to take steps into the Cloud. Of course, we will continue to develop the roadmap for our desktop applications across SOS, Linetime and PracticeEvolve but our native, fully Cloud based solution EvolveCloud will be in high demand from firms of all sizes because we have designed the solution for the Cloud rather than adapting it for the Cloud.

UM begins cloud storage migration to Dropbox | The University Record – The University Record

The University of Michigan community is migrating to U-M Dropbox, which will become the institutions primary cloud file storage option once U-M Box fully retires in December.

Individual migrations for units start this month and will continue on a rolling basis through the summer and fall. Michigan Medicines migration began June 15.

We expect the migration to go smoothly thanks to the support and leadership of more than 300 Unit Ambassadors across the university and a team of outstanding ITS colleagues, wrote Ravi Pendse, vice president for information technology and chief information officer, in a recent email to deans, directors and department heads.

Information and Technology Services has been meeting weekly with representatives in each school, college and area to develop a seamless migration experience across all three campuses and in Michigan Medicine.

Faculty and staff will be notified by ITS and their unit ambassador when it is their window to use a self-service tool to schedule the migration of their files and folders, said Bob Jones, executive director of ITS support services and the Box Retirement Project lead.

It is important that faculty and staff schedule their migrations to take place during the timeframes set aside for their unit.

This plan ensures everyone has time to transition to U-M Dropbox and become acclimated to the tool before the fall term, when returning students will begin scheduling their moves.

To prepare, folks are encouraged to create a U-M Dropbox account if they have not done so already and clean up their U-M Box account by deleting or removing themselves from files and folders no longer needed, Jones said.

A wealth of information is available on the ITS website, including short videos explaining how the migration works and the core differences between Box and Dropbox.

Unit ambassadors in each school, college and area will provide assistance and support during the migration. The ITS Service Center and the HITS Service Desk will be available to offer support, as will members of the Box Retirement Project team.

How to build a CI/CD pipeline with Azure and GitHub – TechTarget

Continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines are the foundation of modern software development, delivering business value in many ways: streamlined releases, software with fewer bugs and automation that removes many time-consuming and error-prone manual steps. You can develop software without CI/CD, but a CI/CD pipeline makes life much easier if your business uses Agile, cloud-native apps or any distributed application architectures such as microservices.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to building a CI/CD pipeline. A typical CI/CD pipeline example relies on some prescriptive components -- a CI engine, code repository, test framework -- but an organization's CI/CD plan will likely branch out, depending on its infrastructure and tools and the choice between continuous delivery or deployment. Organizations that rely on cloud-based applications and services may want to run CI/CD through their chosen cloud platform.

Most cloud providers offer a template to quickly set up a CI/CD pipeline. Consider, for example, a CI/CD pipeline that uses GitHub and deploys an application to Microsoft Azure. A service called DevOps Starter provides CI/CD starter templates that enable you to integrate with either GitHub or Azure DevOps and bootstrap a repository with a demo application from source code along with the pipeline definition as code and infrastructure as code (Azure Resource Manager templates). With these in place, the service stitches everything together to present an end-to-end deployment pipeline.

So, let's get started with this step-by-step walkthrough of how to set up a CI/CD pipeline in Azure with GitHub for version control and repository. First, go to the Azure portal, search for devops and select the "DevOps Starter" service.

In the DevOps Starter service pane, click Add which presents a bunch of preloaded templates to choose from. Select the programming language for your application -- in this example, I chose .NET, as well as GitHub for version control and GitHub Actions for pipelines (Azure DevOps is an option as well). Hit the Next: Framework button.

Now, choose the ASP.NET Core framework for our .NET app, as this is a cross-platform framework; later, we can deploy our application on top of Linux containers. Then click Next: Service.

You can select from several Azure services to deploy your application. For this exercise, we will choose Web App for containers, which deploys containers to an Azure App Service, a managed application-hosting platform. Click Next: Create.

Because we chose GitHub for version control and pipelines, the next step will prompt us to authorize connection to GitHub in the Azure portal. Click Authorize and log into GitHub.

Once we have authorized to GitHub, we are presented with several parameters (the final three are specific to deployment on Azure):

Fill in the details and click Review + Create.

After the deployment completes, we can return to the DevOps Service and see that our instance has been created.

Clicking on the instance presents a landing page with the details of the GitHub workflow and corresponding Azure resources.

We confirm the Azure starter service has created a GitHub repository under our specified organization, and it has set up a GitHub Actions CI/CD pipeline to build, test and release our software. Here's the repository layout:

The image below shows the CI/CD task as it runs through GitHub Actions.

Let's dive deeper to understand what's happening inside a single CI/CD build in our example and its three stages.

This job runs a series of steps to build the application:

The primary responsibility in this stage is to take the artifact (the container image from previous job) and deploy it in the environment on the cloud provider, with the required cloud resources, to host the app instance. Specific functions include:

This job runs various functional tests to validate our deployed app is working. Steps include:

This example of a CI/CD pipeline in Azure with GitHub involves only a single environment, but you could chain multiple environments together, with gates on them to control the release of deployed software.

The free and easy way to send files to any device you should be using – ZDNet

Sending files between devices can be a huge pain. I thought that my woes would be over when I switched to the Apple ecosystem, but while AirDrop is great when it works, there are plenty of times when it lets me down.

And sending a 500MB file around by email is pretty impractical. And the oldsneakernetisn't always practical -- I never seem to have a blank USB flash drive when I need one!

This is where I'm glad I have a backup.

This is where I'm glad I haveSend Anywhere.

Must read:Apple will finally give iPhone and iPad users an important choice to make

Send Anywhere is a file transfer service that makes sending files between devices a snap.

You download the relevant app depending on your platform and away you go.

And Send Anywhere covers a broad array of platforms -- Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, and even the Amazon Kindle are covered. There are also extensions for Google Chrome, Whale, Office 365 Outlook, and a plugin for WordPress.

And they are all easy to use.

There are three modes to Send Anywhere: 1:1 transfers that use a 6-digit key, device-to-device transfers, and the ability to share files using links. And by using the Chrome or Office 365 Outlook plugin, you can send large files via email quickly and easily without having to worry about what mailbox limitations might exist.

I find this service particularly useful for getting things like video files between my devices or for sending something to another person who either doesn't have AirDrop, or doesn't know how to use it, or uses a different platform.

There's also a pro version, calledSendy PRO, which adds 1TB of cloud storage, the ability to manage links, sign-in device management, and more.

If you need this, there's a free 30-day trial, after which Sendy PRO will set you back $7.99 a month.

I'm not a massive user of Send Anywhere, but it's one of those tools I keep in the toolbox for when AirDrop decides to be awkward, or I'm working outside of the Apple ecosystem, and so far, it's not let me down once.

How to Back Up and Restore Your iPhone – PCMag

(Credit: Shutterstock)

Backing up your iPhone is always a good idea. Maybe your phone is misbehaving and you hope to restore it to factory conditions and then apply the latest backup. Perhaps you're upgrading to a new iPhone and want to transfer all your current data. Or you want to back up certain data or content for safekeeping. Whatever the reason, you can back up your phone and restore the backup if and when needed, a process you can perform on an iOS or iPadOS device.

How you back up your phone varies based on the platform. Windows users can back up their phone through iTunes or iCloud. If youre running macOS Catalina or higher, turn to the Finder application. You can also bypass your computer entirely by backing up your phone to iCloud. Subscribers to the Google One online service can also back up specific iPhone data such as contacts, calendar appointments, and photos.

There are pros and cons for each method. Using iTunes or Finder means you don't have to rely on the cloud, though it also means you can restore the backup only from the Apple account on your computer. If your computer crashes, there goes your backup. The good news is that you can encrypt an iTunes or Finder backup if you want to back up your passwords, health information, and other sensitive data.

If you use iCloud instead, your backup wont be affected by computer problems, is automatically encrypted, and is available anywhere. You can even back up to iCloud and restore the data from your phone itself, so you don't need to go through iTunes or Finder. Unfortunately, if your backup uses too much data, you may need to upgrade to a paid iCloud account.

Apple doles out 5GB of iCloud space for free. The paid plans give you 50GB of storage for 99 cents a month, 200GB for $2.99 a month, or 2TB for $9.99 a month. For example, my 512GB iPhone 12 with around 190GB of data required more than 20GB of space on iCloud for its backup, so I needed the 50GB storage plan just to get started.

Google One is another cloud storage option, but it comes with some limitations for iPhone users. You can only back up your contacts, calendar, photos, and videos. Your apps, settings, and other items wont be included. There is also no direct way to restore this data through the Google One app on your iPhone. Google One is available for free with 15GB of space or as a paid subscription with 100GB to 30TB of storage.

First, connect your phone to your computer and fire up iTunes. Click the icon for your phone, then make sure the option for This Computer is selected in the Backups section. Click the Back Up Now button. iTunes syncs and backs up your phone to your computer. After the backup completes, the timestamp under Latest Backup indicates the latest backup date and time.

If you want to back up passwords, Wi-Fi settings, website history, and health data, you'll need to encrypt the backup. Check the box next to Encrypt local backup. Enter and then re-enter a password and click Set Password. With Encryption enabled, iTunes should immediately start backing up your phone. If not, click Back Up Now.

After the backup is finished, you can confirm that it was encrypted. Click Edit > Preferences in the programs top menu. In the Devices Preferences window, click the Devices tab. A lock icon next to a backup indicates that it was encrypted. As long as you keep the encryption option enabled, all future backups will be encrypted. To stop encrypted backups, uncheck the box next to Encrypt local backup and confirm your encryption password.

Okay, now let's say you need to restore your iTunes backup, either to the same phone or to a new phone. Before you can restore a backup to an iPhone, you need to disable the Find My iPhone feature. On your phone, go to Settings > [Your name] > Find My > Find My iPhone. Toggle Find My iPhone to off, type your password, and tap Turn Off.

With Find My turned off, connect the phone to your PC. Click Restore Backup. Make sure the correct backup is selected by the date and time. If not, click the drop-down menu and select the backup you want to restore. Click Restore. Type the encryption password if the backup was encrypted. iTunes starts restoring your phone.

Sign into your phone when prompted. After the restoration finishes, sign in again. You may need to wait for all your apps to be updated and accessible. Then browse your phone's home screens to make sure all the apps and information are intact.

If you have a Mac running macOS Catalina or higher, you will use Finder instead of iTunes to back up and restore your iPhone. To set this up, connect your iPhone to your Mac and open Finder. Click Go > Computer in the menu, then click your phone under the list of locations. The first time you do this, click the Trust button on Finder. Then tap Trust on your phone and then enter your passcode.

The next steps are similar to those in iTunes. At the General tab in the Backups section, choose whether you want to back up your data to iCloud or to your Mac. You can also opt to encrypt the backup. When you're ready, click Back Up Now.

To indicate the backup, the buttons in the Backups section in Finder get grayed out, and a status message and graph at the bottom show that your iPhone is being backed up. When the backup is complete, the buttons become available again, and the date for the Last backup on this Mac will indicate today as well as display the time.

To restore your phone from the backup, click Restore Backup. Choose the correct backup from the drop-down menu and click Restore. Wait for the restore to complete and then sign back into your phone.

Back up your phones data directly from your iPhone by using iCloud. Open Settings > [Your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup on your iPhone. Turn on the switch for iCloud Backup and tap the Back Up Now button that appears. Your phone is then backed up to iCloud. After the backup completes, return to the previous screen to see how much iCloud space the backup ate up.

After you turn on iCloud Backup, a backup automatically runs every 24 hours after the last successful backup. For this to occur, your phone must be turned on and connected to the internet through Wi-Fi. It must also be connected to a power source, and your screen has to be locked or turned off.

If you connect the device back to iTunes or Finder on your computer, youll notice that the option under Automatically Back Up is now set to iCloud.

To restore your iPhone from the iCloud backup, go to Settings > General > Reset on your device. Tap Erase All Content and Settings. Youre then asked if you want to update your iCloud Backup before erasing. If you need to create a new backup, tap Backup Then Erase. If you know you have a recent backup, tap Erase Now instead.

In order to erase everything, youll need to enter your passcode. Then tap Erase iPhone twice. The device gives you ample warning that this will delete all media and data and reset all settings to ensure that you dont do this accidentally.

Once your data has been backed up, you can restore it in the event of a problem or use it to set up a new phone. Follow the screens to set up the phone either manually or automatically through another iOS device. At the Apps & Data screen, choose Restore from iCloud Backup and then sign into iCloud with your Apple ID and password. At the Choose Backup screen, tap the backup you want to restore.

If you don't see it, tap the Show All Backups link and select one from the list. Next, choose the settings you want to restore. Your iPhone is restored from the backup and restarted. Sign in and wait for your apps to be installed and updated.

You can also back up your iPhone using the Google One service. This backs up your contacts, calendar, photos, and videos across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. First, download and install the Google One app from Apple's App Store.

Open the app, and on the Home screen, tap Set up data backup. Then, select the content you wish to back upContacts, Calendar, and Photos & Videos. Decide if you want to back up data over a cellular connection. Tap Back up now, and your data will be backed up to Googles servers. You must keep the app open during this time, otherwise the backup will pause.

Return to the home screen and swipe down to the Storage section or tap the Storage icon on the bottom toolbar to see how much space has been used for the backups and other content. The app has a graph that shows how the backups were allocated among Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos.

Swipe down to confirm what data was backed up from your current device. You can tap Backup settings to change which data gets backed up in the future.

Since there is no restore function in the iPhone app, you will have to visit each individual service when you want to view or potentially restore the data. Open Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos and search for the specific data you wish to access.

ZOL to stop providing email and Webhosting services directly, customers to be migrated to Microsoft 365 at start of July – Technology Zimbabwe

ZOL customers who log into its MyZOL platform are being greeted with a dismissible notice telling them that ZOL will stop providing Web and Email services directly to them starting 02 July 2021. Their email and backup services will instead be migrated to the Microsoft platform effective from this date. Affected customers are being asked to contact support.

This is truly the end of an era where ISPs didnt just provide you with access to the internet but also provided some services including email and web hosting themselves. It means the cloud has won. Everything is going back to the cloud just like in the beginning when screens were just dumb terminals connected to mainframes.

I have had an on and off (mostly on) relationship with ZOL starting around 2007 when a friend and I teamed up to sign up for what was then known as a ZimSurfer account. This was during the first economic meltdown which people often refer to colloquially as 2008 and just like now we had lying politicians and government authorities in charge who claimed everything was going well when it wasnt.

We accidentally discovered for example that Zimbabwes TelOne gateway to the internet was being occasionally switched off. Yes, at one point creditors literary switched off Zimbabwes access to the internet due to debts. We only discovered this after complaining to ZOL that we couldnt access Google. Thats when we upgraded our dial-up account, with the help of the company that I was interning for, and he and I got shiny new @zol.co.zw Webmail as a perk. We also registered a .co.zw domain for company emails. Again that was a thing.

The advantage of getting email straight from your IP was that it tended to be faster as opposed to say getting it from Gmail. We had a 26kbps dial-up connection on an analogue phone line-loading the Gmail interface was a struggle. I was already a proficient Linux user and when people complained about slow email I came up with a pretty slick email setup:

Yes at one point Econet had their own email service which was yournumber@econet.com or something like that. We also used the same email set up when Econet finally launched GPRS and for $25 you could have blitzing speeds of 128kbps which was unlimited. Exciting times.

In a FAQ section provided on the migration notice ZOL says they have been using a legacy LinuxSci platform to cater for their customers needs and it seems it has become a pain to maintain and ensure availability. I can relate too. I used to be an advocate of hosting my own email but at some point, I just gave up. For US$2/per user per month my cloud services provider can provide a better service that doesnt have me tearing my hair every now and then when the services go down.

They are doing this for the same reason businesses stopped having on premise email servers. Yes, at some point it was pretty standard to host your own email services within your premises. Having worked as a young boy to maintain such a system, I can confirm its not worth it. Most IT departments tend to be understaffed as they are not a core business. This means that you have to stop helping people plugin back their mouses ( or is it mice?) and keyboards and run to the server room to fix email issues.

SMEs simply signed up for services like ZOL mail instead. ZOL would handle that headache for them and it seems even ZOL has had enough headaches and want Microsoft to handle the issue. This means that you will be paying ZOL to pay Microsoft to provide you with email. Users can choose between the following plans:

It also doesnt seem like this will be an automated process or maybe it is, there are questions there. While ZOL seems to imply the migrations will be done by 02 July the FAQ section says those who want to migrate have to get in touch with support. If you are affected I think its best you get in touch with ZOL as soon as possible to get clarification.

One question you may have is why Microsoft and not Google Workspace? Personally, I have always preferred Googles cloud offerings compared to Microsoft but the thing is a lot of businesses already rely heavily on Microsoft products and Liquid Intelligent Technologies being partners with Microsoft may have influenced the decision.

Its not clear whether you have to option to choose your own email provider or not. It should be easy to do that though as all you will need to do is sign up with your preferred provider and ask ZOL to updated your MX records on their end. Another thing thats not clear is how much the service will cost you per month or if you can pay using ZWL which the government says is being accepted internationally.
