Multi-Cloud Platforms Offer Up Key New Capabilities and Differentiation – CXOToday.com
Focus on security and governance issues potentially hiding the opportunities offered
Few things are as frustrating as being unable to find that thing you know you have. Like that tool you thought you left on the shelf in the basement, or the book you could have sworn was on the bedside table. Or information. The lifeblood of organisations and the foundation for critical decision-making made all the more necessary in todays business environment.
The challenge is that information is still commonly stored in various systems including the cloud, making it hard for companies to leverage it as a key way to create more value.
A new study from Forrester Consulting, commissioned by Oracle*, emphasises the essential role of multi-hybrid cloud platforms to collate the mass of information that enables analysis of insights and inform business-critical decisions.
The study, entitledMoving the Needle: Data Management for the Multi-Hybrid Age of IT,explains that 82% of the 670 senior technology decision makers recognise that investing in the right data management strategy will lead to better business outcomes. But73% admit that they have disparate and siloed data strategies that are stopping them from providing business stakeholders with the data they need.
Chung Heng, Senior Vice President, Oracle Systems, JAPAC and EMEA said, Organisations in Asia Pacific are making strong progress in terms of unifying data sources and getting on top of data security and governance requirements. But the study also reveals that their intense focus on these areas may be holding them back from realising some of the benefits of multi-hybrid cloud they need right now around providing access to unique capabilities and supporting diversification. In fact, only a third of companies in JAPAC appear focused on this aspect of data management as compared to over two thirds in Europe. They need to make sense of living in a multi hybrid cloud environment as soon as possible, or risk being left behind.
As the study shows, with increased complexity, compounded by working across different IT environments, 64% of respondents are grappling with the challenge of managing a multi-hybrid infrastructure. So its not a surprise if 70% of organisations consider the need to simplify their IT processes as a high priority.
One issue highlighted by the study is that concerns and focus around data security and data governance are limiting businesses from gaining key benefits. According to the research, the adoption of multi-cloud data hosting is driven by the need for diversification as well as access to unique capabilities 6 out of 10 respondents mentioned accessing specific technology or capabilities as drivers for their multi-cloud strategy.
However, even though 83% of firms believe that data security requirements are of high or critical priority as they advance along their data management roadmap, half of respondents say they currently lack the ability to adequately ensure data protection and comply with security regulations.
Given these challenges, the study recommends that organisations look to their technology partners for a unified data platform that will provide end-to-end visibility across their hybrid environments, along with the security foundations that are flexible enough to meet current and future data complexities.
KEY FINDINGS
*Oracle commissioned Forrester Consulting to evaluate the state of data management strategy, specifically in organisations across Asia Pacific (AP) and Europe and Middle East markets. Forrester conducted an online survey of 670 technology and business decision makers with responsibility over data infrastructure and data strategy, while also conducting exclusive interviews with 10 C-level executives across these respondents to dig deeper into their approach, drivers, and best practices of data management.

5 benefits of switching to cloud hosting – KnowTechie
Downtime, slow loading speeds, high dedicated-server costs. Do any of these strike a nerve?
Traditional servers have limitations, and they can severely affect your e-commerce business. Cloud hosting provides a solution; its efficient, cost-effective, secure, reliable, and easy to migrate. So why arent more of us using it?
Im guessing for some companies the thought of changing web host or theirIT structure, seems like a complicated and costly affair, when it couldnt be further from the truth.
Lets look at some of the advantages of using a cloud web host.
Uptime and loading speed are both vitallyimportant to the performance of your website; cloud hosting can guarantee both, heres why.
Traditional hosting servers are independent, so if it fails, your website will go offline, cloud web host servers are interconnected, if one fails, the next takes over, guaranteeing maximum uptime.
Standard hosting servers share their bandwidth amongst multiple websites; this directly reduces the loading speeds. Cloud hosting, on the other hand, distributes the data across various servers, when one slows down the next picks up the pace.
Cloud servers can instantaneously scale to meet any demands made upon your website.
Think of it as a flexible server that expands as your traffic grows and contracts as your traffic slows, meaning you only ever pay for the service you need and when you need it. Traditional servers can be scaled up, but its a timely and costly process, and you have to buy a fixed package. While cloud servers allow you to pay on a month to month basis, so you only ever pay for what you need.
Initially, choosing a cloud hosting option for your business can seem expensive, but its worth the investment.
As previously mentioned, scalability becomes an affordable option, there are other features too, such as free data migration, resource monitoring, fully managed hosting, increased workforce mobility, speed of loading, and zero downtime. To get a better understanding of what cloud platforms can offer and cost, click here.
Traditional hosting can provide an almost equal level of security as a cloud, but this will require you to upgrade to a private server, which will be expensive.
Cloud hosting offers multiple layers of protection without the need for one dedicated server. The advanced security infrastructure has authentication identity systems, data encryption, storage segregation, firewalls, and routine backups. Another advancement is in file transfer, as they pass within the cloud; theres no possibility offile corruption.
Cloud has many beneficial features over traditional servers, one being freedom of access.
Traditional servers are location restricted, meaning you have to consider this when choosing as it affects yourwebsites loading speeds. Cloud technology is world-wide, enabling users to gain access and work from any location, anytime, and from any device, all thats needed is an internet connection.

Global Top 10 Cloud Technology Market: Overview
In general terms, cloud computing is the delivery of hosted services over the Internet. Rather than maintaining and building an in-house computing infrastructure, cloud computing enables companies to use resources of compute, such as machines, storage or an application. Pay-per use, self-service provisioning, and elasticity are the key benefits of cloud computing that can be availed by businesses and end users. Cloud migration, cloud analytics hybrid cloud, cloud orchestration, cloud storage, Integration Platform-as-a-Service (iPaaS), multi cloud management, Disaster Recovery-as-a-Service (DRaaS), Video-as-a-Service (VaaS), and Wi-Fi-as-a-Service are the major cloud technologies.
Global Top 10 Cloud Technology Market: Key Trends
Through a massive shift to cloud, organizations and businesses are able to move their computing resources such as databases, infrastructure, applications, platforms, and email onto the cloud. It assists in lowering the costs, aids in recovering files, speeds operations, and manages other mission-critical tasks. It also enables business continuity while shifting workload to the virtual environment from the data center. Faster deployment, agility, mobility, scalability, lower total cost of ownership, and business continuity are the major drivers of cloud migration.
The exponential growth of digital services and their applications, along with the increasing need of business enterprises for greater scalability and flexibility, has augmented the implementation of hybrid cloud services and solutions, thereby driving the demand for cloud technology.
Global Top 10 Cloud Technology Market: Market Potential
More and more organizations and end-use industries are resorting to cloud computing. Several health organizations digitize their abundant data and are on a constant lookout for cloud providers to help them understand the scalability of cloud environments without foregoing compliance and security controls. As per a report by SADA Systems a premier business and technology consulting firm and cloud partner, 58% of healthcare organizations globally that are not using cloud today are likely to do so in the next two years, while 95% of healthcare organizations using cloud today propose to increase their cloud usage.
Recently it was announced that by late 2018, Belarusian government agencies will start using beClouds cloud computing platform. After signing relevant documents, all government agencies have to migrate to the beCloud platform. Over 60 government organizations and agencies are required to make the switch.
However, many federal agencies are not in sync with the given cloud computing advantage and find that such migration has little or no impact on functionality. It is causing newer applications to load slowly, become non-intuitive, and above all, difficult to work with. According to the findings of Deloitte and the Government Business Council (GBC), many employees from major government, defense, and civilian agencies have reported that cloud computing had no obvious influence or any impact on their organization.
Global Top 10 Cloud Technology Market: Regional Outlook
North America, especially the U.S., accounted for a large share in the Top 10 Cloud Technology Market in 2015. Collaborations, content and communications along with customer relationship management are the key drivers for the growth of the regional Top 10 Cloud Technology Market during the forecast period. However, as the market in North America is nearing maturity, various industry players are venturing into the emerging markets of the Middle East, hence boosting the market for cloud technology.
The Middle East is fast becoming a lucrative Top 10 Cloud Technology Market. Under the paid-subscription category, numerous organizations have started implementing cloud-based applications that do not require any downloading or upgrading nor is there any need to maintain any servers. Battle Royale: Which of These Indian Video Conferencing Apps Would Win Govt Challenge? – 360TopNews
As the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY)s homegrown video conferencing app challenge deadline draws closer, multiple lesser known Indian video conferencing apps and services are gearing up for the opportunity to significantly grow their businesses. At the focal point of this growth is privacy, the key reason for which the Indian government proceeded to ban global video conferencing giants such as Zoom and Google Meet, and opt for a talent hunt to build Indias own, homegrown video conferencing service.
The opportunity that has risen for Indian startups working on video conferencing apps is, in ways, due to the severe privacy and data security gaffes that hammered Zoom through March and April. EnableX, one of the startups participating in MeitYs video conferencing app challenge, is looking to cash in on this as well.
Speaking to News18, Pankaj Gupta, founder and CEO of EnableX, says, We employ AES 256-bit encryption over DTLS-SRTP for audio, video and shared content. Regardless of device types or participants, all media traffic is encrypted. All signalling is carried over standard https protocol, and EnableX supports industry-standard PKI certificate validation.
A screen grab from the EnableX website.
Troop Messenger is another startup that is also vying for MeitYs award, with its video conferencing service, Cattle Call. While the latter was started as part of the overall Troop Messenger suite, it is now being segregated into a standalone video calling application that may be released by August 2020. Its founder and chief executive, Sudhir Naidu, tells News18 that he does have end-to-end encryption in mind as a feature to be offered via Cattle Call. As of now, the service will offer DTLS-SRTP media encryption standard, which is a common, end-to-server grade technique used to encrypt all chats and media, to begin with.
Apart from this, we will also offer PIN unlock, fingerprint unlock, face unlock and two-factor authentication for accessing critical data, adds Naidu.
A third such startup is VacYa, which has already been offering scalable services to enterprises globally via VacYaChat (text messaging) and VacYaFone (VoIP calling). With the increasing demand for video conferencing services around the world, the startup has introduced VacYaMeet, a customisable video conferencing service that also offers end-to-end encryption as a key feature in its portfolio.
Hosting the service on a companys own servers automatically makes it more secure.
Chandra Potineni, founder of VacYa, states that his startup has developed a double lock strategy to be used specifically for the video conferencing service, and has applied for a patent for the same. With the patent pending as of now, Potineni did not divulge further details about exactly how the technology works. To further instill confidence among enterprises, VacYa allows its clients to host the service on their own servers, therefore keeping data even more locally, and being compliant to more stringent security rules. That said, while others are keeping the window of consumer-end applications open, VacYa is strictly focusing on offering an enterprise service.
An example of the suite of services that VacYa offers.
Anuj Garg, founder of Inscripts, also built a video conferencing app with his team that recently went viral. Say Namaste, as the service is being called, is an entirely new service from a startup that found popularity in the enterprise space due to CometChat. In an earlier interview with News18, Garg stated that the company is exploring multiple encryption options, undertaking an independent security audit and looking at features like two-factor authentication, as part of their features suite. Garg, however, also stated that smaller scale video conferencing apps from Indian startups should not be compared with global giants such as Zoom and Google Meet, at least until the scope of business becomes more even.
Whats important to note is that for each of these startups, being in the communications space is not new per se. EnableXs Gupta states that the companys main platform went live in 2019, and already has over 1,000 enterprise users across Asia. EnableX offers a white label platform that companies can customise to their needs, and also integrate third party services into.
The video conferencing service, on the other hand, has been rolled out very recently, and we are currently offering it as a free to try service. It has been rolled out in phases over the last few days, and we have about 100 of our customers using it, adds Gupta. With MeitYs challenge, Gupta believes that EnableX can benefit significantly in terms of its outreach and visibility. The entire platform was built over three years out of offices in Noida and Bangalore. However, the video conferencing solution did not take that long to prune.
The aim is to leverage prior experience in the communications and signalling space, and invest it in video conferencing.
Troop Messengers Naidu also affirms that even his company isnt new, and has been around for over two years now. In fact, he further states that before expanding with Troop Messenger in 2017, he has been involved in the communication technology space for over 18 years. It is this experience that Naidu aims to leverage to provide an on-premise video conferencing model of Cattle Call, alongside features such as the future option of allowing companies to add Troops Cattle Call as a third party service to cloud-hosted enterprise software.
While VacYaMeet is significantly younger than the rest, it too was conceptualised well before the Covid-19 pandemic. Potineni says, The solution has been available to the public for the past two months in beta testing, and has over 30,000 hours of testing. He further stated that the founders of VacYa have several hundred patents between them. VacYa is primarily based in India, but also has a division in USA as it eyes international expansion.
Inscripts Garg has also been in the field for a while, with its original product, CometChat, now being over a decade old. Even beyond the Covid-19 crisis, I believe many companies will be shifting to a remote working model, which is what makes this a super lucrative business, he says. Garg is not alone every participant that News18 spoke to is looking at a significant expansion phase of video conferencing services, and hence targeting enterprises squarely with their recently developed offerings.
With privacy in focus, the governments challenge may just give this sector a much needed boost, and bring a host of Indian video conferencing services at par with global offerings.

Without cloud computing, businesses would now be in even deeper trouble – ZDNet
CIOs have spent the past few years investing in cloud-based platforms and applications to help with the digital transformation of their businesses, and to allow their employees to connect to corporate systems from any device and on the move.
With hindsight, that commitment to cloud-enabled services is fortuitous to say the least. While the impact of coronavirus COVID-19 has already been devastating in human terms, the economic impact on many organisations would have been much greater if it wasn't for the huge investment by businesses in cloud computingthat has enabled many knowledge workers to switch rapidly to home working.
Organisations across the globe splashed out a record $107 billion on cloud-computing infrastructure servicesin 2019, up 37% from the previous year, according to analyst firm Canalys. Gartner predicts worldwide spending on public cloud services will grow 17% in 2020 to total $266.4 billion, up from $227.8 billion in 2019.
SEE: Cloud v. data center decision (ZDNet special report) | Download the report as a PDF (TechRepublic)
The analyst describes the use of cloud computing as "mainstream"; in many organisations, the cloud is now simply business-as-usual for IT operations. And yet the pace of the switch to the cloud has been so great that even a couple of years ago many organisations would have lacked the tools to respond effectively to the demand for working from home.
Today, many CIOs I speak to have pretty much everything they need to be successful remote-working companies, from fast home internet, readily available and affordable laptops, mature single sign-on to multi-factor authentication, and the majority of business systems can be provided over the public internet.
That's means that organisations like in the cases of the Greater London Authority, Leeds City Council and the University of Sussex have been able to create a remote-working strategy in days, not even weeks or months.
Of course, it's important to stress that despite its inexorable rise cloud computing isn't yet ubiquitous. Important pockets of resistance remain, not least the plethora of legacy applications that remain in blue-chip enterprises and which are hard to re-platform to cloud infrastructures.
But that's for another day. Right now the cloud is rising to the challenge and providing the platform to help employees in organisations to work, if not in a normal way, than as normal as might have been anticipated when you're not allowed to share the same space as your colleagues.
If the outbreak had happened a decade earlier, IT would have been in a very different situation. Back in 2010, the average company spent just $6,300 a year on cloud computing, or $23.31 per employee, according to a survey of IT executives by Osterman Research.
Software development was one of the biggest uses of private cloud computing, but the basics of remote working video conferencing, document collaboration and secure networking were just a pipedream. In 2010, cloud computing was characterised by hype and there's no way that companies many could have established effective remote-working capabilities.
That would have left CEOs with much harder decisions to make. No cloud computing would meant no home working. Without a viable option to continue working safely, many more companies would have been forced to close their doors and furlough staff.
But while the human and economic cost of this crisis is huge, the potential financial damage of coronavirus has been reduced by the ability of many workers to use the cloud to fulfil some operational activities. If it wasn't for the cloud, people who are lucky enough to still have a job wouldn't be able to moan about how they now spend the majority of their working days in Zoom meetings.
Those of us still able to bring in an income for our families should be thankful for the cloud. While the office is out-of-bounds, the work that usually takes place within that space can now be completed from any location, whether that's the home office, the kitchen or the sofa.
Cloud isn't just about supporting remote-office work, either. Children around the world are logging on and completing schoolwork from home. It's the same at universities, too. As Jason Oliver, director of IT at the University of Sussex, has found, using the cloud to support distance learning means students and academics have a complete digital environment in their own homes that mirrors in-classroom experiences.
SEE: How remote work is changing CIO priorities amid the COVID-19 pandemic
It's also important to recognise how recent investments in the cloud by healthcare organisations are helping to support healthcare professionals in their vital work on the front line. Think, also, of how the cloud is being used to support ground-breaking and collaborative work by researchers around the world who are trying to find a vaccine for the virus.
In many ways, the coronavirus outbreak has been the impetus for the biggest ever beta test for a technology platform and cloud computing has risen to the challenge. Executives that might have previously doubted the value of an investment in on-demand IT will have seen how cloud has supported remote working and will now be convinced of its strengths.
So the coronavirus outbreak will help persuade more companies to spend on the cloud in fact, they might well have already made that investment to ensure their staff can carry on working. As they reflect on the decisions they took once the battle against coronavirus is finally won, executives might look back on the commitment they made to invest in the cloud and conclude that it was the best IT decision that their business ever made.
