Ampere donates Arm64 server hardware to Debian to fortify the Arm ecosystem – Stockhouse
SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 16, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Debian today announced that Ampere® partnered with Debian to support Debian's hardware infrastructure through the donation of three of Ampere's high-performance Arm64 servers. These Lenovo ThinkSystem HR330A servers contain Ampere's eMAG CPU with an Arm®v8 64-bit processor specifically designed for cloud servers, equipped with 256GB RAM, dual 960GB SSDs, and a 25GbE dual port NIC.
The donated servers have been deployed at the University of British Columbia, Debian's hosting partner in Vancouver, Canada. The Debian System Administrators (DSA) have configured them to run Arm64/armhf/armel build daemons, replacing the build daemons running on less powerful development-grade boards. On virtual machines with half as many allocated vCPUs, the result has been that the time to build Arm* packages has been halved with Ampere's eMAG system. Another benefit from this generous gift will allow DSA to migrate some general Debian services currently operating in its present infrastructure, and will provision virtual machines for other Debian teams (e.g.: Continuous Integration, Quality Assurance, etc.) who require access to Arm64 architecture.

Kia Motors Corporation has announced the launch of a Kia Owners Manual App, an AI-based owners manual developed in partnership with Google Cloud and Megazone.
The Kia Owners Manual App is a customer-friendly mobile app that explains the name and functions of features found inside Kia models using the smartphone camera.Instead of having to refer to the printed owners manual, drivers can use the app to more easily find information about individual features. The easy-to-use app also has the advantage of being able to explain functions simply and conveniently.
Kia has offered augmented reality (AR) mobile apps to customers in certain markets since 2017. However, wide use of the app was limited as it required measuring all layouts and switches for every new model. Kia, Google and Megazone focused on recognizing symbols on the switches making the app compatible with any new models as symbols in vehicles are universal. Partnering with Google Cloud and Megazone means the new Kia Owners Manual app can be more easily tailored and adapted for dozens of Kias global markets.
AI-enhanced symbol recognition
By applying Google Clouds unique AI platform-based image learning technology, the apps Symbol Scanner function allows accurate identification of in-car switch symbols from any angle.
For example, if a user scans the cruise control symbol on the steering wheel with a smartphone, the AI platform will recognize the image via server communication. The smartphone then instantly displays a video introducing the detailed functions of the cruise control system.
Fully-searchable Digital Owners Manual
In addition, the Kia Owners Manual App serves as a digital owners manual with a search function. It also provides a Symbol Index and Warning Indicator Index, providing an illustrated list of in-car symbols and instrument cluster warning lights and their definitions.

How Lenovo, Cellnex, Nearby Computing Are Delivering on the Edge – eWeek
Edge computing is evolving rapidly, partly because of ongoing improvements in the underlying technologies and partly because our understanding of what it takes to develop and deliver successful solutions continues to mature. That is especially true in the case of emerging commercial applications, like the next-gen video processing that is central to emerging 5G mobile applications, such as those that support entertainment events and initiatives for smart cities and communities.
For those reasons, therecent edge computing announcement from Lenovo, Cellnex and Nearby Computing is well-worth considering. The trios new offering maximizes the experience and contributions of all three companies, resulting in a valuable solution for mobile operators and enterprises leveraging mobile infrastructures. Lets look at what Lenovo and its partners are up to.
Why are so many vendors and their customers focusing on computing on the network edge? Because it can help overcome some particularly thorny IT complexity and cost issues. Organizations are gleaning increasingly massive volumes of data from far-flung locations, remote sensors and vehicles and people in transit. Those resources are potentially valuable, but moving vast chunks of information to data centers on premises or in public clouds is both difficult and expensive, resulting in high bandwidth and backhauling costs.
Edge computing can resolve those issues by performing essential data collection, sorting and analytics tasks, then sending along far more compact files for further analysis and resolution. Sounds great, right? But its harder than it seems. Edge-computing facilities are usually cramped for space and are often located far away from deployment, support and maintenance personnel.
As a result, successful edge solutions are typically designed from the get-go for specific use cases, feature highly compact form factors and robust hardware components, and can be effectively orchestrated and managed from afar.
Lenovo, Cellnex and Nearby have overcome these challenges in a jointly developed converged edge solution that combines and maximizes the companies expertise and innovative technologies.
The new offering is designed to enable the mobile operator customers thatCellnex works with in Spain, Italy, Netherlands, France, Switzerland, the UK, Ireland and Portugal to capture lower total cost of ownership (TCO) while also supporting new visual use cases for vertical segments and consumer markets. The offering can be customized and optimized for location-specific requirements across edge of network environments. In addition, it is highly scalable and can be configured for deployments covering wide or smaller areas.
The new solution is based on LenovosThinkSystem SE350, an edge-specific server withinnovative security features that the company introduced last August. The SE350 is highly compact and far narrower and shallower than conventional 1U servers. Systems leverage Intels Xeon-D CPUs and can be configured with up to 16 cores, 256GB of RAM and 16TB of internal solid-state storage. The SE350 also supports NVIDIA Tesla T4 GPUs for performing Edge Inferencing and AI functions. When combined with Lenovo Open Cloud Automation (LOC-A) (discussed inthis Pund-IT commentary), customers can easily integrate their SE350 edge workloads with both VMware and Red Hat-based clouds and automate the end-to-end management of those environments.
The new offering incorporatesNearby Computings orchestration for edge-computing solutions, including node provisioning, application onboarding and lifecycle management. The three companies also worked closely with Intel to architect the new offering in a modular and flexible way. The solution uses the Intel distribution of theOpenVINO toolkit for AI inferencing, and the companies also plan to adoptIntels OpenNESS (Open Networks Edge Services Software), which abstracts network complexity and simplifies developer tasks for incorporating network-as-a-service capabilities.
Due to its inherent variables, edge of network computing is well-suited to strategic partnerships. Working with partners that are intimately acquainted with the requirements of a given use case and the needs of customers in specific industries and markets can significantly reduce risk and increase the likelihood of a joint projects success.
That is exactly what Lenovo has done by joining forces with Cellnex and Nearby Computing. Working together, along with an assist from Intel, should result in a solution that meets the discrete requirements of Cellnexs mobile operator customers. At the same time, this solution and the partnership behind it underscore the value of Lenovos investments in edge computing and the ThinkSystem SE350. This latest effort clearly qualifies as a feather in Lenovos edge-of-network computing cap, but it certainly wont be the last.

AWS mitigated a record-breaking 2.3 Tbps DDoS attack in February – SiliconANGLE
Amazon Web Services Inc. today revealed that it managed to mitigate a 2.3terabytes-per-second distributed denial-of-service attack in February, the largest DDoS attack ever recorded.
Detailed in the AWS Shield Threat Landscape Report- Q1 2020, the attack lasted three days, with those behind it unsuccessful in knocking Amazon cloud services offline.
The attack was a so-called Connection-less Lightweight Directory Access Protocol reflection-based attack.A CLDAP reflection attack involves an attacker sending a CLDAP request to a LDAP server with a spoofed sender IP address the targets IP address. The server mounts a bulked-up response to the targets IP address, causing the reflection attack, hence the name.
The ultimate aim, as with all DDoS attacks, is to flood the target with a massive amount of data to disrupt normal traffic, making the website or app hosted on the server unresponsive.
While specifically mentioning the attack, the AWS report notes that smaller network volumetric events are far more common. The 99th percentile events in the first quarter of 2020 is said to have been 43 gigabytes per second.
The reportalso notes that after CDLAP reflection attacks, the second-most common DDoS vector observed by AWS in the first quarter were SYN flood attacks. A SYN flood is a form of DoS attack in which an attacker sends repeated SYN packets to every port on a targeted server often using a fake IP address.
According to Imperva, the server, unaware of the attack, receives multiple, apparently legitimate requests to establish communication. It responds to each attempt with a SYN-ACK packet from each open port, eventually causing the servers connection overflow tables to fill and thus denying access to legitimate clients.
The previous known record for a DDoS attack was an attack that targeted GitHub Inc. in March 2018, which peaked at 1.2 Tbps.
With computing power growing, so too are the size of DDoS attacks. If not for the AWS2.3Tbps DDoS attack, the new record would actually involve a web host supported by Akamai Technologies Inc. in June.
A new report published by Fahmida Y. Rashid at Duo Security details a DDoS attack targeting a website hosted by a hosting provider that peaked at 1.44 Tbps, the largest Akamai has ever seen. The main attack lasted for an hour and a half with smaller attacks targeting the website later.
Similar to the AWS report, these attacks involved volumetric attacks and floods of ACK, SYN, UDP, NTP, TCP reset and SSDP packets, multiple botnet attack tools and CLDAP reflection.

Report: France and Germany team up on a cloud-computing ecosystem to take on Amazon, Microsoft and Google – FierceTelecom
France and Germany are teaming up to jointly create a cloud-computing ecosystem that would challenge Amazon, Microsoft and Google, according to Reuters.
The project, which is called Gaia-X, is working to create common standards for storing and processing data on servers that are located inside of the countries, which would result in cloud services that comply with the European Union's laws on data privacy, according to the Reuters story.
The goal of Gaia-X is to reduce the cloud dominance of Amazon, Microsoft and Google. According to Reuters, German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier described Gaia-X as a "moonshot" that would help assert Europe's technological sovereignty. Altmaier invited additional companies to participate.

The first step of the moonshot includes 22 French and German companies setting up a non-profit foundation to run Gaia-X. Reuters said one of the goals Gaia-X was being a referee of sorts for a common set of European cloud rules.
Gaia-X would include the concept of "reversibility," which would allow users to easily switch providers, according to Reuters. The first set of services are slated for next year.
While Germany and France are attempting to wrest more control of the cloud landscape, it would be easy for AWS, Microsoft and Google to undercut the effort by lowering their prices. They also have a wide range of services, experience and applications that enterprises and other organizations rely on as they move their software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications and data to the cloud.

Just as they are in the U.S., Amazon Web Services and Microsoft are the leading cloud providers across Europe based on cloud infrastructure revenues, according to first quarter research by Synergy Research Group (SRG.)
Amazon is the top cloud provider in Europe and the leader in all of the major individual country markets while Microsoft is ranked second across the board. Below Amazon and Microsoft, SRG said the results varied across the countries.
Overall Google is the third-ranked cloud provider in Europe, but it trails both OVH and Orange, respectively, in France. IBM is ranked fourth overall, but has various top-six rankings in each individual country. Salesforce, Rackspace and Oracle are global providers that are farther down the country rankings, with Salesforce ranked fifth overall across all of Europe.
Given the importance of scale, global presence and deep pockets, SRG's John Dinsdale, a chief analyst and research director, has previously said it would be difficult for smaller cloud providers to close the gap on Amazon, Microsoft and Google. On that note, it's hard to imagine that France and Germany will be able to take significant market share away from the top-three U.S. cloud providers.
