Whether thats because of the costorthefeature set is unclear which storage service you choose comes down to your personal needs, and OneDrive may not do it for you, especially if you dont use Microsoft Office.But Microsofthas put in a lot of work to make OneDrive competitivewith the likesof Google Drive and other cloud storage services.The companyjust rolled out a few new features, includingafile detail paneandfamily and group sharing.These new features are definitely much-needed improvements to OneDrive, but its too little,too late for people like me, who have beenusingthese features (and then some)on Google Drive for years now.
I was an early adopter of Google Drive, so when GooglesBackup and Sync came to Windows I immediately installed it. No longer did I have to open my browser, sign into my Gmail account, and navigate to the Google folder I needed to access a specific file. I could do it all from my desktop. It also made uploading files easier, too. Open window. Click and drag file. Done. I installedBackup and Sync on both my desktop and laptop, so if I needed to work on something while I was away from home, I could automatically access it as soon as the cloud storage was done syncing itself to my computer. It made things so much easier for me.
Backup and Sync came out a month before I finally made the switch to Windows 10 from Windows 7, so part of my disdain for OneDrive comes from Windows asking me to sign into it every time I booted up my PC. No, Microsoft, I dont want to sync my files with OneDrive! Im in a long-term relationship with Google Drive. You cant expect me to just move my files to your house when I have invested years of time into creating a meticulously organized system of folders for everything: the work I did in grad school, the classes I taught, photographs dating all the way back to my childhood. Not to mention that,at the time,OneDrive just didnt have all the neat features Google Drive did.
The only thing I hated about Backup and Sync back then was that I could only be signed into one Gmail account at a time, which is kind of annoying when you have multiple Google Drives you need to quickly access at a moments notice. But thats a thing of the past, as you can sync as many accounts as youd like to your computer now. Still, every so often I save copies of all my files to my secondary hard drive, so I have backups in case I cant access Google Drive for some reason. Google Docs can be easily converted to Word files and vice versa. Youll need to actually open up Google Docs in your browser to do this, but its only a mild inconvenience.
MicrosoftWord is better for some things, like loading hundreds of pages ofdocuments, which takesforeeeeeever withGoogle.But for general sharing or collaboration, I stick with Google Docs because thats what Ive done for years, and most people I need to collaborate with dont have a Microsoft Office 365 subscription. Why get one when Google Docs is free, ya know?
If you dont plan to use OneDrive on your PC ever, heresa fantastic solution to avoidbeing bothered by it again:Uninstallthe damn thing from your computer. Its made booting upmuch more pleasant. Sorry, Microsoft. Im not buying what youre selling, no matter how many small tweaks you make to OneDrive.

You wont find this laptop on HPs own website, but the 14-DK1003DX - a Best Buy exclusive at $239.99 (roughly 190/AU$350) - has an intriguing quality that not many have picked up on.
The machine is one of very few business laptops to come with an AMD Athlon Silver processor. Athlon was the iconic CPU brand that helped drive the company forward the beginning of this century and has been in limbo for about a decade. It's now back and (surprise, surprise) is powered by AMDs Zen+ architecture.
The Athlon Silver 3050U has not yet been tested, but we know it's similar to a Ryzen 3 3200U (with two cores and two threads) and a GPU that has one fewer compute units. Its GPU, the Radeon RX Vega 2, should be more powerful than anything else found in this price range.
The rest of the specification is adequate for the price: theres 4GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD (not eMMC), a 14-inch display, Windows 10 Home in S Mode (which can be upgraded to Windows 10 Home), a 3-cell Lithium-Ion battery, a Gigabit Ethernet port, Wireless AC Wi-Fi and a webcam.
Reviewers say the memory is upgradable, so you should be able to pop in a second 2.5-inch solid state drive. There are also a few unexpected freebies, including a touchpad with real buttons, a 6-month subscription to Webroot Internet Security with Antivirus for three devices (worth $29.99), McAfee LiveSafe and 25GB of Dropbox cloud storage for a year.
Perhaps the only major sore point is the fact the screen resolution is a measly 1366 x 768 pixels. That's the kind of resolution that belongs to the early 2000s and theres no reason for this lapse in quality today - especially considering most entry level smartphones are now full HD.

Summer is here and when the warm weather hits, most people are thinking about beaches and backyard barbecues. Me? Im thinking estate sales!
Thats right, not only am I a collector of ancestors, I also dabble in everything else, well, old. My mostly willing husband and I will grab coffee, our stops mapped, and head out on a Saturday adventure. My plan is always the same: head straight to the kitchen in search of vintage bakeware, Le Creuset or, if Im lucky, a pie bird that Ive never seen. Even though I really love the hunt, Im not unaware that some items for sale were, at one time, a familys treasured heirlooms. Heartbreaking.
I know firsthand as a genealogist that many family members will automatically leave special items with you, because they know you will protect them. And, you do. But you probably wonder how you are going to preserve those same heirlooms for future generations. If your kids are interested in genealogy, then you have no issue, because you know those heirlooms will be passed on and their stories preserved. However, not every genealogist is that lucky. What can you do to ensure the items will continue to be a part of your familys history?
The first thing I suggest is to snap a photo of the treasured item then upload it to your online family tree, family tree software or into your cloud storage. (I keep a private online tree. If yours is public, remember its for all the world to see.) Once your heirloom photos are uploaded, you can share them with anyone who is looking into your family line. Just be sure to include a couple lines about the items history. Who did it belong to? Was it a gift? Remember, its the stories that make our heirlooms priceless.
A perfect example is a well-loved potato dish I was given that has seen better days. Its dainty handle is missing bits and there are too many chips to count. If I saw this at an estate sale, sadly, it would not be making the trip home. But, guess what? That sad little potato dish is proudly on display in my dining room because of its story that connects me to the owner, my great-grandmother, who received it as a wedding gift in 1891.
Second, print the photos and put them in an heirloom photo album along with their handwritten story. Dont forget to include the owners name and how they fit into your family tree so a future genealogist can easily connect the dots. Your family will have a photographic and written record of these heirlooms to enjoy, even if the actual item doesnt survive.
Its also important to protect the heirlooms youre keeping a watchful eye over. Are you storing them properly? Learn what type of environment each heirloom requires to keep it in the best condition. Do you have a piece of jewelry or furniture that has more than sentimental value? If so, get your heirlooms appraised before storing them away and ideally get insurance on them in the amount of their combined worth. Money wont replace the heirlooms if something happens, but it can soften the loss.
Our hope is that our heirlooms stay in the family but maybe your items are of historical significance. If you have decided they should be donated to a historical society or museum one day, those wishes would need to be made known. Put your wishes in writing, ideally in a will, but at the very least on a notarized paper you keep with someone you trust.
