Some People in This Montana Mining Town Worry About the Dust Next Door – Kaiser Health News
Katheryn Houghton
BUTTE, Mont. Steve McGrath stood in an empty lot a block from his home watching for dust.
In this southwestern Montana city nicknamed The Richest Hill on Earth, more than a century of mining left polluted soil and water that has taken decades to clean.
But at that moment, looking across the road toward Buttes last operating open-pit mine, McGrath was worried about the air. Here comes another truck, McGrath said, pointing to a hillside across the street as a massive dump truck unloaded ore for the mines crusher. A brown cloud billowed into the air. And theres the dust.
In the Greeley neighborhood, where McGrath lives, many people have a hard time believing the air they breathe is safe. A two-lane road separates the roughly 700 homes from the Continental mine, an open-pit copper and molybdenum mine operated by Montana Resources.
Residents have received assurances that the level of particulate matter in their neighborhood isnt hazardous, but some doubt those standards protect human health. People breathe in particles all the time, but the size, abundance, and chemical makeup determine whether theyre dangerous. Now, the Environmental Protection Agency is evaluating whether its threshold for the density of harmful particulate matter should be lowered, saying it may not go far enough.
McGrath, 73, grew up in Butte and has long been one of the voices in the neighborhood asking whether the dust that settles on his roof and car includes a dangerous mix of toxic metals. Is this a health concern? McGrath said. Weve never gotten a really satisfactory answer.
For years, the company and the state Department of Environmental Quality have collected air samples in the neighborhood. The results have been consistent: Pollution levels dont warrant alarm.
Montana Resources established a monitor to track metals in the air around Greeley, and an independent review found no threats to human health, which the state health department backed. However, additional studies, which government and mine officials have often bucked, have indicated potential problems such as elevated levels of metals, including aluminum and copper, in the area and traces of arsenic and lead in the ground and called for more testing.
This year, the nonprofit advocacy group Montana Environmental Information Center asked a contractor to review the data that Montana Resources and DEQ collected. Ron Sahu, the mechanical engineer who did the review, said not enough research has been done to determine conclusively whether the mine is harming Butte residents. According to Sahu, the data had multiple shortcomings, such as time gaps. He also said that one air-monitoring station may miss harder-hit areas and that the risk to residents of prolonged exposure to the dust is still unknown.
On a recent night in Butte, Sahu presented his findings to mine officials, representatives of the state, a local health advisory committee, and a handful of Greeley residents. State health and environmental quality staffers repeated what has been said before: All the recorded emissions meet federal standards.
Even so, Sahu said, the pollution levels exceed the public health safety recommendations made last year by the World Health Organization. For example, the EPAs maximum annual average for the finest particles is a concentration of 12 micrograms per cubic meter, while the WHOs limit is 5. From 2018 through 2020, the Greeley air-monitoring station recorded annual averages that range from more than 7 to nearly 10, according to Sahus review.
The EPA is studying whether to lower its 12-microgram standard and expects to release any proposed changes this summer.
In the meeting, resident Larry Winstel said he didnt care about the data. He held up a square sheet of plexiglass covered in dust. This is whats on my picnic table, he said. This is three weeks worth. How much of this is being deposited over a year?
The manager of environmental affairs for Montana Resources, Mark Thompson, said the company goes beyond whats required to mitigate dust. He said it uses 240-ton trucks to water the mines gravel roads and air filtration systems to trap particulate matter.
Thompson said he agrees more must be done to determine whether air in Greeley is unsafe and, if so, why. If there is a problem in that community, I want to know about it, Thompson said. My son, my daughter-in-law, and my two baby granddaughters live a block from the main gate of the mine.
Butte became a gold and silver mining camp in the 1860s, and people traveled from around the world to work in the city. The area was the battleground of the Copper Kings in the 1890s as mine owners raced to extract the metal used to feed the countrys growing electrical infrastructure and manufacturing industry.
People who grew up in Butte and nearby didnt often question what the presence of mines or smelters meant for their health. The extractive industries offered good jobs. Many are proud their city helped electrify the nation and produced as much as a third of the worlds copper supply during its heyday.
Atlantic Richfield Co., which bought the Anaconda Co., shut down the Butte mines in 1982. Butte and a stretch of the Clark Fork River, where the mining waste washed downstream, were designated a federal Superfund site in 1983. A few years later, Montana Resources began operating, and its jobs helped steady the towns population at about 30,000. The cleanup of the historical lead, arsenic, and other contaminants continues today.
The boundary of that work borders the Greeley neighborhood to the west, while the Continental mine cups the neighborhood to the northeast. Some residents worry the mines operations add another layer of harm.
I know about the air-monitoring station down here and that they say it doesnt pick up anything dangerous, said Bob Brasher, who has a view of the Continental mine from his front yard. But I dont see how it couldnt when we have those days and you look out here and you can see the dust blowing this way and settling.
Just down the road, Haley Rehm said she didnt think about the dust until a recent test of her 2-year-old sons blood found elevated lead levels. The cause isnt clear toxic metals can be ingested in multiple ways. But the mines proximity prompted Rehm to test her home for lead; she was still waiting for the results in May.
People often speculate that local cancer cases are linked to the areas mining past and present.
Jeanette Cooksey, 70, cant remember a time she wasnt worried about the dust. It has especially been on her mind since she was diagnosed with stage 4 uterine cancer two years ago. I have to wonder if living in this neighborhood my whole life has something to do with it, Cooksey said.
A state health department analysis found the incidence rate for cancer from 1981 through 2010 wasnt elevated in Silver Bow County compared with the rest of the state.
Not everyone is worried. For some people, even talking about potential health effects equates to an anti-mine mentality.
Al Shields rolled his eyes when asked whether the dust concerned him and nodded toward his clean trucks, saying they hadnt been washed for days. What people dont understand is if the mine goes, Butte is done, he said. If you dont like it, leave.
Montana Resources employs 380 people and is a significant source of tax revenue. Those pushing for more research into the mines effects and what can be done about the dust have said they arent trying to close the operation. We want a clean and healthy environment, said Ed Banderob, with the Greeley Neighborhood Community Development Corporation Inc.
When Buttes health advisory committee meets again in the fall, the state will share the air-sampling data it has collected in the hopes that staffers can answer lingering questions. Meanwhile, Montana Resources hopes to set up more air-monitoring equipment around the neighborhood by the end of the year.

MLK Gold Adds 104 Lithium Claims On Its 360 Lithium Property – Junior Mining Network
Airborne geophysics, soil and till geochemistry, and drilling to be completed by end of Q4 2022
WINDSOR, NS, June 9, 2022 /CNW/ - MLK Gold Ltd. (CSE: MLK) ("MLK" or "MLK Gold" or the "Company"), a growth-oriented gold exploration company headquartered in Windsor, Nova Scotia, is pleased to report that after an initial data mining compilation of public government databases, the Company has added 104 lithium claims covering 2,600 hectares on its 360 Lithium Property located on the south coast of Newfoundland.
Company President and CEO, Paul Smith (P. Geo.) and Executive Chairman, Bill Fleming, noted significant pegmatite development on the property following an initial reconnaissance visit to the area late last month.
"We know from previous government and academic research that pegmatite veins have been noted in previous mapping of the area and contain sub-ore grades of elemental lithium in addition to numerous quartz-tourmaline veins," said Smith. "What we were surprised to observe was the abundance of veining and the variation in textures and mineralogy. Our plan is to complete a full assessment of these claims as part of our Q3 exploration program which includes our Caledonia Brook Gold Property," he added.
Exploration is set to begin at the end of July and will coincide with the Company's plan to release its airborne Versatile Time-Domain Electromagnetic (VTEM Plus) geophysical survey and soil data collected by Geotech Ltd. and Overburden Drilling Management (ODM).
Update onCaledonia Brook Gold Project:
The Company's flagship Caledonia Brook Gold Project is targeting lode and intrusive-hosted styles of gold mineralization through a planned initial drill program of 1,200 metres in 12 proposed holes to be collared on the Mustang66, Maverick, and Charlie Zones.
"The commencement of our Q4 drilling will represent the first diamond drill holes ever undertaken on the property," added Smith. "We have two additional holes being considered on the Slider Zone which will be conditional on results of a detailed soil sample survey in this area."
Versatile Time-Domain Electromagnetic (VTEM Plus)
A total of 662 line-kilometres (representing ~62% of the property) has been covered by an airborne Versatile Time-Domain Electromagnetic (VTEM Plus) geophysical survey. Survey highlights include:
All data is currently under review and results will be released in the Company's next update.
Glacial Till Sampling
Phase I of the Company's glacial till sampling program in the northern portion of the property has been completed with 111 samples being processed by Overburden Drilling Management (ODM). A summary of the results from the samples include:
All heavy mineral concentrates from ODM's mineral separation work are currently being analyzed at Activation Laboratories Ltd. in Ancaster, ON, and results will be released once they have been received.
Additional glacial till sampling will be carried out over the southern part of the property in Q3-Q4.
Soil Sampling and Rock Geochemistry:
The Company's 2022 soil sampling process will take place over five separate grids on the property. Gold assay grades in soil from last summer's exploration have shown elevated gold content up to 192 ppb. Further work will target the Mustang66, Maverick, Cougar, Charlie, and Slider Zones.
Rock geochemistry has indicated four areas of elevated gold, silver, zinc, or lead content. These occur along the Mustang66, Viper, and Maverick Zones with gold assays up to 2.38 g/t Au and with silver up to 71.1 g/t Ag, 4.03 % Zn, and 1.07 % Pb.
All work will focus on areas where either known structural faults occur or where the Company has evidence of either shear zones or faulting being present based on its previous exploration in the area.
MLK Executive Chairman, William (Bill) Fleming, says the Company's commitment to the area's high potential is driving their exploration program.
"We have a pretty good idea of the geological similarities we share with other major stakeholders in the area, and we are encouraged by some of the results we have recorded to date," said Fleming. "Keeping that in mind, our primary focus right now is to accelerate the implementation of our strategic exploration initiatives, and if that requires more investment capital then we'll execute that action."
MLK's Caledonia Brook property is situated in central Newfoundland west of New Found Gold Corporation, northeast of the Valentine Lake deposit property, and southwest of Sokoman Minerals Moosehead gold property, and shares geological and structural similarities to Marathon Gold's (4.14 million ounces; 3.14 Moz. M&I, 56.7 Mt @ 1.72 g/t Au; 1.00 Moz. Inferred; 18.2 Mt @ 1.70 g/t Au) Valentine Lake deposit with both properties lying along the Victoria Lake Grand Falls Shear Zone System. The Company's qualified person has not verified data from Marathon Gold's Valentine Lake project and similarities are not indicative of mineralization on the Company's properties.

Business profile: Sheryl Sandbergs mixed legacy – The Week UK
Sheryl Sandberg intended to spend just five years at Facebook when, in 2008, she joined the fledgling company from Google as Mark Zuckerbergs right-hand woman, said Hannah Murphy in the FT. Instead, she stayed for 14 years as Facebooks (and later Metas) chief operating officer, becoming one of the most recognisable and polarising figures in Silicon Valley. In recent years, the power duo have drifted apart; now Sandberg is off for good in the autumn. She leaves behind a mixed record. On the one hand, she is the female role model who helped grow Facebook into a $500bn-plus company by supercharging its digital advertising machine. On the other, she became a lightning rod for criticism as the company lurched from scandal to scandal. Facebook would not be Facebook without Sheryl, said David Jones of the Brandtech Group for good and bad.
The deal that Zuck struck with Sandberg was that hed focus on the product, said Danny Fortson in The Sunday Times. Anything with a low-geek quotient sales, policy, legal, communications, lobbying was left to his polished consigliere, who had useful contacts in Washington, having worked for Bill Clintons treasury secretary, Larry Summers. The deal, which effectively split Facebook into two domains, will go down as one of the most consequential in business history. It made Facebook, which went on to buy Instagram and WhatsApp, a new media juggernaut. But Sandberg also contributed to its worsening image. Critics held her responsible for Facebooks Cambridge Analytica data-privacy scandal, as well as Russian disinformation, and the proliferation of hate speech and fake news.
Sandbergs exit leaves a vacuum at Meta at a tricky time, said Gina Chon on Reuters Breakingviews. The group had its troubles under her leadership, but at least it had a business model and a top-tier executive who could sell it to investors. Zuckerbergs ambitions lie in more abstract directions, such as the still-vague metaverse. But her real legacy is much broader, said Stephanie Hare in The Observer. Having led the transformation of Google into the worlds leading advertising business, she performed a similar trick at Facebook. Yet where Sandberg sees scale, others see something sinister. Harvard professor Shoshana Zuboff author of The Age of Surveillance Capitalism argues that Sandberg is the Typhoid Mary of her age, owing to her role in spreading Googles data-mining practices to Facebook. She will go down in history for her extraordinary success in growing these companies and her failure to deal with the costs of that success.

As a result it has made great contributions to achieving the goal of talent training and promoting the modernization of school education.
Technological Breakthrough, More Accurate Teaching Resources
At present, the construction of digital educational resource platform has become an important content and practical focus of educational informatization in schools and training and educational institutions. With the continuous expansion of the data in the digital education resource platform, the phenomenon of information overload is inevitably caused. Teachers and students have to spend a lot of time and energy to find and select the most suitable educational resources, which seriously reduces the learning efficiency and resource utilization.
In order to solve the problem of information overload caused by massive educational resources, CHEN Sitao has actively carried out research on educational resource recommendation service technology, using knowledge in cognitive science, information retrieval, prediction theory, management science, and market modeling, under repeated tests, developed and designed A Data Mining-Based Promotion Resource Recommendation System V1.0. The system includes a resource storage module, a login module and a resource processing module, which can actively recommend personalized educational resources, save a lot of time to find educational resources and learning materials, improve resource utilization, and achieve the goal of maximizing learning efficiency.
From the perspective of application function, the system has the following characteristics: the accuracy of resource recommendation. The system can collect data information from social media within the scope of user authorization, and then analyze users demands for educational resources. Based on this, it recommends appropriate educational resources for customers and provides users with accurate recommendation services; In addition, the system also has strong language understanding ability, which can accurately understand various forms of information such as text, voice, and pictures sent by users, and establish various educational resource system models, thereby improving the accuracy of information understanding, analysis, and retrieval and realizing intelligent processing and analysis of user language.
It is precisely because of its powerful functions and application advantages that A Data Mining-Based Promotion Resource Recommendation System V1.0 has received good market feedback as soon as it is launched. Many schools and educational institutions express that the application of the system not only enriches teaching resources, assists teachers to carry out more accurate and efficient teaching activities, and lays a good resource foundation for students to establish a personalized and efficient learning method. It greatly improves students academic performance and realizes the teaching level of schools and educational institutions.
Grasp the Trend and Promote the In-depth Development of Smart Education
Education needs technology, this is a phrase that CHEN Sitao frequently mentioned in interviews. In her opinion, the future education is network-based education, which pays more attention to individualization and diversified needs of students. It enables a life-long education that allows all children to enjoy high-quality educational resources and emphasizes learning ability. To achieve such educational goals, we must deeply understand the revolutionary impact of information technology on education, apply information technology scientifically, build a networked, intelligent, digital and lifelong education system, and promote the in-depth development of smart education.
In view of the precise grasp of education trends and a deep understanding of the connotation of education, CHEN Sitao said that in the future, she will continue to practice the deep integration of people-oriented concepts and information concepts, meet the needs of talent training in the new era, and grasp the key points and difficulties of smart education development. Guided by the needs of educational practice, she will continue to promote innovation and breakthroughs in educational technology, plan the construction and development of smart education from an overall perspective, and make our own contributions to advancing the fundamental transformation of the education system and the intelligent transformation.

China Is World’s 2nd Largest Bitcoin Mining Nation Despite Ban, Data …
Despite a blanket ban on cryptocurrency in China, many Chinese citizenscontinue to mine Bitcoin illegally, according to data from the Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index (CBECI).
What Happened: The data showed that China became the second-largest Bitcoin BTC/USD hash rate provider as of January. This came despitethe local government banning all operations related to cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum ETH/USD, and Dogecoin DOGE/USDin the country.
The data further showed that the Bitcoin miners in theXi Jinping-led country accounted for 21.1% of the total global Bitcoin mining hash rate distribution as of early 2022. The U.S. led the highest BTC mining at 37.8% of the total hash rate as of January, up from 4.1% in September 2019.
CBECI report is based on data obtained in collaboration with four major mining pools, BTC.com, Poolin, ViaBTC, and Foundry.
China was once the worlds largest Bitcoin mining country, with the BTC hash rate power accounting for more than 75% in 2019, according to CBECI. The hash rate then plummeted to 0% around July 2021, following a series of crypto mining farm shutdowns in the nation.
Price Action: According to data from Benzinga Pro, Bitcoin was trading at $30,264, down 0.34% over 24 hours. Ethereum was trading at $2,070, down 0.31% over the same period.

Sandvik looks to an open, interoperable and automation-ready future – International Mining
To fully step into Industry 4.0 and realise the transformative power of solutions such as automation, artificial intelligence and advanced analytics requires a change in the way that mining data is handled and utilised from one system to the next, according to the Sandvik Rotary Drilling Division (part of Sandvik Mining & Rock Solutions).
Programs that are designed to fully integrate with those from other vendors will not only deliver efficiency and cost benefits today, but also help mining houses transition into powerhouses of the future, it says.
As mining organisations have adopted digital solutions over the past 30 years, each company, down to the individual mine, has selected solutions that fit their mining style, commodity, workforce and processes. Due to the shift of professionals from one organisation to another, the different processes used for each commodity, and the introduction of new technologies, commonalities between digital products differ from operation to operation.
While some OEMs see this variability as an opportunity to close off third-party access to data and push their own digital agenda, Sandvik Rotary Drilling Division sees the sharing of data, connectivity and technology access as the next logical step to moving the industry, as a whole, forward.
Demetre Harris, Product Manager for Automation & Technology, said: While there is much talk about systems interoperability and the benefits it could deliver in mining, its still in the early stages. Most vendors are still reluctant to allow others direct access to their technologies and generated data.
Many vendors claim to offer application programming interfaces (APIs) that allow their solutions to share data with third-party systems, however there are often links missing which prevent true integration or mean that assistance from the vendor is required, according to the company.
There are no standard APIs, Harris explained. For a third party to integrate its solution with an OEM platform or vice versa, it must develop custom code. The only way that happens today is if a customer can persuade the vendor to do the work.
Understandably, miners are wary of locking themselves out of future purchasing decisions because their equipment may not be able to communicate properly with other systems.
Challenges and opportunities
When systems are unable to share data automatically, operators must resort to manual data handling and reporting. This is slow and tedious for staff and open to inaccuracies. Systems may also report data in different ways.
For example, key performance indicators (KPIs) can be computed differently between drilling solutions. One system may refer to utilisation as the time that the drill is operational, whether drilling, tramming or leveling, while another may calculate utilisation as the time during which an operator is onboard the drill. The challenge lies in integrating that information and drawing timely insights from it.
If machines and systems cannot talk to one another, then safety conflicts could also arise making it difficult to operate the machines in the same environment, the company said. From an automation perspective, the ability for OEM systems to communicate with third-party solutions allows teams to mine safer and reduces the need for change management.
Without interoperability and data sharing, the case for efficiency drops severely, Harris added. Not all operations are at a point where theyre ready to connect their systems together. Some mines may not have the infrastructure yet, but its going to be increasingly important going forward.
Interoperability can provide huge efficiency and productivity gains across the value chain. For example, data generated during drilling can be used to improve blast profiles and optimise burden and hole spacing, which lowers explosive costs. Better blasting also improves fragmentation which lowers energy consumption downstream in crushing and grinding.
The blast arc can be positively affected when leveraging data, according to Sandvik
Each department has its own performance targets and goals, Harris explained. If we can better integrate the programs that each team uses, then those processes can be optimised, and efficiencies realised across the entire operation.
The more freely data can flow from one process to the next, the better prepared each department can be to handle changes originating from the orebody.
Open data, open mind
True interoperability requires more than just data sharing. If systems are to be fully integrated, then the companies developing them must make interoperability a pillar of their designs and processes, according to the Sandvik Rotary Drilling Division.
Sandvik firmly believes that interoperability and data sharing are key to future efficiencies in mining, and the company is open to working with any third party to provide access to its data-rich technologies.
We offer several levels of integration, Harris explained. From the sharing of data from our iSeries drill rigs into third-party solutions installed onboard our rotary drills, to API integrations with office and cloud solutions. There are multiple ways to connect and access our data so that it can be fed to other mining processes, including planning, blasting and mineral extraction.
Ultimately, were open to discussing all forms of integration and interoperability, he added. If we work together, it provides better value for the customer, for Sandvik and for the industry as a whole.
Designed for today and tomorrow
An example of this value can be seen in Sandviks latest integrations: one mining organisation asked the company to allow its blast solutions provider access to Sandviks iSeries Rotary Drills measurement-while-drilling (MWD) data. Using that data, the provider was able to calculate the hardness of the ground and determine the correct quantity of explosives and the best blasting sequence to fragment the ground, minimising both waste and blast costs.
The solutions that were developing now are designed for future data sharing and interoperability, Harris explained. Thats the case with the newest version of OptiMine for Surface which will be released later this year.
Some of the data thats provided through our APIs today may not be needed but, as new integrations and capabilities arise, systems may require it. Were building our solutions in a way that makes them futureproof.

How Indonesia’s PERSI is participating in the country’s digital transformation – Healthcare IT News
The Indonesian Hospital Association or PERSI is on board to support Indonesia's goalof advancing the country's digital health transformation further.
Anis Fuad, PERSI's head of data and information centre, told the HIMSS Indonesian Digital Transformation Symposium on 25 May 2022 in Jakarta about what the association wants to do in the country's digital health transformation.
PERSI's contribution
Fuad said PERSI will help "build our digital health ecosystem" and "support the digital transformation process".
"We will think about what strategies we need to build later so that our hospitals be digitised,"he told the symposium.
Besides technological aspects, Fuad said, PERSI will also help build governance, citing how there is currently only a single piece of regulation on hospital information systems in the country.
"[Less than] fifty pages to manage data lakes, data mining, data sharing and others? Not enough. Therefore, we need to discuss what good governance is,"he said, referring to a 2013 regulation.
Survey results
PERSI conducted a survey in March this year involving around 3,000 hospital participants.
Fuad said around 88 percent of hospitals surveyed had a billing system implemented to varying degrees either those were already optimal or not yet optimal and still needed improvements. He said about five percent of hospitals surveyed did not have such a system set in place, while the rest planned to build it this year.
He added that around half of the hospital participants had telemedicine infrastructures set up; most of which needed improvements. The other half did not offer such services at all.
"PERSI will play an important role, we will conduct several studies which are later expected to provide benefits," Fuad said.
"Hopefully, everyone after seeing this data [will ask themselves]: What are we going to do? We as stakeholders, where [is our place]? What [is our] role?"
He said hospital groups, such as the Indonesia Healthcare Corporation, in the green level the highest success indicator based on the survey "could contribute to other hospitals" as either "centres of excellence" or training centres.
Positive outlook
Fuad highlighted how Pondok Indah Hospital Group became the first Indonesian healthcare provider to achieve Stage 6 HIMSS EMRAM in Marchthis year.
"This, I think, shows that our hospitals are now growing. We are also more open now, we are evaluated by external parties," Fuad told the symposium.
"I think there will be more," he said, referring to how more local hospital groups will soon attain a level 6.
He said PERSI has partnered HIMSS, adding that both parties will focus on building human resource and hospital capacities and increase the engagement of PERSI members.
"PERSI members will be more aware of how we can collaborate at HIMSS. There is so much knowledge that can be shared with members."
