Facebook: Don’t expect full end-to-end encryption on Messenger until 2022 ‘at the earliest’ – TechRepublic
Facebook says it wants to make E2EE the default across all of its messaging platforms, but this will be a gradual process.
Facebook Messenger won't be encrypted until at least next year.
Image: James Martin/CNET
Facebook has pledged to make end-to-end encryption (E2EE) the default across all of its messaging services though has told users not to expect it on Facebook Messenger or Instagram Direct until 2022 "at the earliest".
Gail Kent, Facebook's policy director for Messenger, shared a blog post on 30 April outlining the social media company's plans to improve the security of its messaging apps following the surge in private messaging during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kent said the rise in messaging meant more people were concerned about the privacy and security of what they were sending, further fuelling the popularity of privacy-focused messaging platforms like Signal and Telegram.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg made commitments to improving Facebook's reputation as a privacy-focused social media platform back in 2019, admitting at the time that the company did not "have a strong reputation for building privacy-protective services".
Zuckerberg cited private interactions, encryption, reducing permanence, safety, interoperability, and secure data storage as the core guiding "principles" of developing a privacy-focused social network.
While Facebook has introduced a number of privacy and safety tools over the past year, including additional privacy settings, messaging forwarding limits, an app lock and Snapchat-style disappearing messages, end-to-end encryption remains a work in progress.
Kent said the company was "working hard to bring default end-to-end encryption" to all of its messaging services, but added that this was "a long-term project and we won't be fully end-to-end encrypted until sometime in 2022 at the earliest."
SEE:Security incident response policy(TechRepublic Premium)
Kent added: "The safety features we've already introduced are designed to work with end-to-end encryption, and we plan to continue building strong safety features into our services."
End-to-end encryption has been perhaps one of the most sought-after safety features within messaging and meeting platforms since video conferencing became the norm in 2020.
Facebook-owned WhatsApp is encrypted by default, though it received backlash from privacy-concerned users in January when a privacy policy update indicated it would share more user data with Facebook. The companies later clarified that the changes were only relevant to business users of WhatsApp, though not before some customers jumped ship for rival apps Signal and Telegram.
Kent addressed customers' privacy expectations when outlining Facebook's plans to reinforce security across its messaging platforms, which she said would be "guided by input from outside experts."
Kent said: "People want to know how their data is being used and what data is accessible by us or others when messaging. In addition, people may have different privacy expectations based on the size or nature of a group chat or audience.
"Ultimately, privacy is personal and comes with different expectations depending on their situation. So transparency and controls are key."
SEE:How to manage passwords: Best practices and security tips (free PDF)(TechRepublic)
People also want messaging that's free from unwanted advertising and more protection from scams, which have also increased sharply during the pandemic.
Kent additionally acknowledged a "clear need" to balance the privacy and security of users' messages while maintaining the safety of the platform, and ensuring that law enforcement can access data when needed "in response to real-world harms".
In the UK, Facebook is facing calls to keep its messaging platforms unencrypted to help law enforcement tackle abuse on the platform.
Kent said there was as yet "no consensus on a recommended approach" that could adequately balance safety, privacy, and security, and that more consultation would be needed.

Facebook Is Expanding End-to-End Encryption and Planning On Launching It for Rooms – Digital Information World
Facebook is one of most used platforms that exists currently in the social media world. Facebook has been in the social media space for the longest times and people are highly attached to the application in terms socializing and connecting with their friends and family and updating people about their lives. The tech giant understands that a vast population is relying on the application and therefore the company works very hard day in and out to bring forwards features and tools for their users that are user friendly and unique in order to keep their audience intact and growing.
One new feature that the company is working towards is something you must have seen in WhatsApp a lot. It is called End-to-End Encryption and is a source of maintaining the privacy of users and now Facebook is introducing a similar feature as well on their main app.
While it already has this feature in some parts of its application the tech giant is now expanding encryption to more of its messaging products. Facebook is working on end to end encrypted rooms now on the platform. You can set the encryption in rooms through the settings on the main application and select who can join the room by the given two options Anyone with the link and Only people who you approve along with various other settings. Once this feature is enabled for a room user will not be able to turn it off again.
This feature was discovered by none other than Alessandro Paluzzi who is an app researcher.Paluzzi took it to his Twitter with two screenshots to explain what he thinks about this feature.
If you are wondering why you cannot see this feature it is because the tech giant is working on it currently and it has not been launched for the general public. It may take some time before it is officially launched. However, there is also a possibility that you may never see it because all tech giants are known not to release features if it does not come up to their expectations during the testing. Whatever will happen we will come to know of it in the near future.

While we expect to make more progress on default end-to-end encryption for Messenger and Instagram Direct this year, its a long-term project and we wont be fully end-to-end encrypted until sometime in 2022 at the earliest. Moreover, the safety features weve already introduced are designed to work with end-to-end encryption, and we plan to continue building strong safety features into our services," Facebook said in a blog post.
Those who extensively use Facebook and Instagram to send messages can use the secret chat or the vanish mode feature for end-to-end conversations. Facebook Messenger and Instagram Will Not Support End-to-End Encryption Any Time Soon – TechTheLead
EEE, or as its more commonly known, End-to-End Encryption, is the bane of most data collecting agencies out there, as it hinders efforts to gather personal info, or even worst, private data. The social media network, Facebook, has been struggling to add End-to-End Encryption to its subsidiaries, like Facebook Messenger and Instagram, since 2019, although, in a recentblog update, the social media giant announced that the privacy feature will not be arriving any time soon.
While we expect to make more progress on default end-to-end encryption for Messenger and Instagram Direct this year, its a long-term project and we wont be fully end-to-end encrypted until sometime in 2022 at the earliest. Moreover, the safety features weve already introduced are designed to work with end-to-end encryption, and we plan to continue building strong safety features into our services.
As Facebook notes in the blog post mentioned previously, We need to find a balance of safety, privacy, and security. In stark contrast with WhatsApp policy, which offers EEE by default, an app also owned by Facebook. Even raising some concerns about Facebooks intent on unifying WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Instagram Direct messaging service, under one governing set of rules. On the other hand, this can also mean that Facebook will hesitate to integrate and unify, rather than reduce WhatsApps security level.
We need to find a balance of safety, privacy, and security. There is a clear need to balance the privacy and security of peoples messages with maintaining a safe environment and providing data to law enforcement in response to potential real-world harms. We discussed tools that can protect peoples privacy while also preventing harm from happening in the first place, using behavioral signals, traffic data, or user reports rather than access to the content of all messages. There was no consensus on a recommended approach, but experts encouraged more consultation to help strike an appropriate balance.
Somesourcesspeculate that this move may have political implications, then technical, as Facebook is under considerable scrutiny and opposition from law enforcement and child protection organizations for potentially harboring illegal communication from the view of the authorities.
Compared with other messaging services like Signal and Telegram, which are drawing more and more users to their platform, the social media giant is bound to lose an impressive sum of customers due to Facebooks poor privacy policies. Signal and Telegram received aspike in downloadsfollowing the controversy around WhatsApps intended adjustments to its terms of service, although Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger rest ontop of the Play Stores free apps.

Whatsapp to introduce end-to-end encrypted backups – Pakistan Observer
WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging app, is reported to be working on a new product and has sent an upgrade to the Google Play Beta Program, taking the edition to 2.21.10.2.
According to WABetainfo, the app is working to add end-to-end encrypted backups after allowing the replay pace and a refreshed chat bar in previous WhatsApp beta releases for Android.
End-To-End Encrypted Backups will make your backups very safe when hosted on Google Drive. When you restore WhatsApp, you need to type the passcode to decrypt it, and nobody else can see its content because the end-to-end encryption protects it from unauthorised access, it said.
The function is currently being developed.
When you allow end-to-end encrypted backups, you must enter a passcode to customise it, according to WABetainfo.
WhatsApp will offer you the option to update your password or disable encryption until the ability to encrypt backups is activated.
The password is private and it wont be shared with WhatsApp or their parent company, Facebook, WABetainfo said.
If you forget your password, the messaging app would not be able to help you recover an encrypted end-to-end backup until the function is accessible.
