Facebook and Instagram will not get end-to-end encryption until 2022, here is how you can use it for chats – India Today

While Facebook-owned WhatsApp users prepare themselves to sign up for the new terms of service that are slated to go into effect from the 15th of May, Facebook has made another announcement. The tech giant, in a blog, the post noted that it has been working on the end-to-end encryption of Facebook and Instagram will not come before 2022. While we expect to make more progress on default end-to-end encryption for Messenger and Instagram Direct this year, its a long-term project and we wont be fully end-to-end encrypted until sometime in 2022 at the earliest. Moreover, the safety features weve already introduced are designed to work with end-to-end encryption, and we plan to continue building strong safety features into our services," Facebook said in a blog post.

Those who extensively use Facebook and Instagram to send messages can use the secret chat or the vanish mode feature for end-to-end conversations. Facebook users who use the Messenger app for chats can enable secret chats for end-to-end conversations, however, both the sender as well as the recipient must have the secret chats enabled.

To start a secret conversation on Facebook Messenger:

-- Open Facebook Messenger app on your phone.

-- Tap on the pencil icon in the upper-right corner.

-- Tap on Secret in the upper-right corner, you will see a toggle with a lock that is to be turned on.

-- Select the user with whom you want to start your secret conversation.

-- Messages you type will disappear after 10 seconds.

-- You can extend this time by setting a timer to make the messages disappear.

To enable a secret conversation on Facebook Messenger:

-- Open Facebook Messenger app on your phone.

-- Tap on your profile picture in the upper-left corner.

-- Go to Secret Conversations, and turn the toggle on

-- Tap on Me in the upper-left corner to go back to the Me page.

-- Tap on Done in the upper-left corner.

Instagram users can enable Vanish mode in their direct message inboxes. It does not make a difference if the recipient has the feature enabled.

To enable Vanish mode on Instagram:

-- Open the Instagram application on your device.

-- Tap the 'direct or messenger' icon on the top right.

-- Open any chat window you wish to enable the vanish mode for.

-- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to enable vanish mode.

-- If you wish to disable the vanish mode, then open the chat window you have enabled the vanish mode for.

-- Swipe up from the bottom screen again or tap 'turn off vanish mode' on the top of the chat window to turn off the vanish mode. If you leave the chat window, the vanish mode will also be turned off.
