Disruptive tech trends: Fintech leads Twitter mentions in February 2020 – Verdict
Fintech heads the Verdict list of the top five terms tweeted in disruptive tech in February 2020. These are based on data from GlobalDatas Influencer Platform. The top tweeted terms are the trending industry discussions happening on Twitter by key individuals (influencers) as tracked by the platform.
The need for fintech companies to articulate the benefits to banks and the fintech role as a global disruptor were leading topics. An article shared by Antonio Grasso, a digital transformation advisor, describes how the financial services industry is undergoing a complete makeover. This is because of fintech start-ups. From digital-only banks to payment innovations, fintech solutions are the preference, even for traditional financial companies.
The adoption of blockchain and blockchain wallets is also looming over the global finance industry opine experts, with a majority of the financial services companies increasing their investments in blockchain innovations. Michael Fisher, a tech evangelist, tweeted on the different ways the technology can help the environment.
In another tweet, Ron Shevlin, an industry analyst, shared an article on the five hottest technologies in banking. The author shared an article listing the top technologies disrupting the banking landscape. These included digital account opening, P2P payments, video collaboration, cloud computing, and application programming interfaces.
The applications of machine learning across industries, especially in healthcare were popularly discussed in February 2020. According to Marcus Borba, a global thought leader and influencer, machine learning is being used to tag, classify and filter the vast amounts of real-time data. This is to help public health officials assess the risk factors of the coronavirus, and thereby predict the course of the disease and its impact.
In other news, Ron Shevlin, a financial services marketing expert, shared an article on how chatbots and machine learning will transform the banking sector. However, the article stated that few community-based financial institutions had deployed these technologies, and that most institutions landed up not investing much than what was professed.
Described as the next frontier, and expected to transform almost everything, the internet of things (IoT) and its application in key industries was popularly discussed. For instance, Ronald van Loon, a top influencer of technologies, shared a video on how almost all unimaginable devices will be connected to the internet. For example, smart heating systems that can detect if youre home, to refrigerators that can tell you if youre running short of products.
On the automotive front, statistics show that by 2034, autonomous vehicles will make up only 10% of all the vehicles bought and sold. This was tweeted by Antonio Grasso, a digital transformation advisor. The survey further revealed that approximately 42% of the US public refused to ride on an automated vehicle altogether. While the computer systems in cars are expected to become highly sophisticated, safety and cost might hinder widespread adoption. In other news, Apple is looking to integrate the car key feature in its iphones and watches.
Meanwhile, logistics companies are connecting to IoT technologies with legacy systems. This is to improve visibility and agility through in-fleet sensors that can aggregate all kinds of data. North America, Western Europe, and developed Asia, are quickly catching up to this trend of integrating telematics hardware and software in trucks.
Innovations and worldwide spending on artificial intelligence (AI) were some of the popular topics discussed during the month. For instance, Antonio Grasso, a digital transformation advisor, shared an article on the worldwide spending on AI expected to reach approximately 45 billion in 2021. The article revealed that banking, financial services, and insurance would be spending the highest ($12bn) in AI tools in 2021.
AI investments have seen a surge because the technology is helping meet the worlds biggest problems. For instance, an AI tool can help detect breast cancer five years in advance according to an article shared by Ronald van Loon, a top technology influencer. Likewise, it can help detect skin cancer, predict the recovery of coma victims, analyse eye scans, and also trial new drugs much faster. This is according to Michael Fisher, a tech evangelist.
Harold Sinnott, a social media and digital marketing consultant, also highlighted its applications beyond healthcare such as in highly personalised education and energy conservation.
Cloud neutrality, digital transformation, and combining of technologies to achieve business scalability were discussed. Molly Wood, a tech correspondent, shared an article about the need to talk about cloud neutrality. The article stressed that it was unfair that the cloud economy lay in the hands of just a few companies, who are actually hosting their own competition.
Andy Jassy, the CEO AWS, Amazons cloud computing business, shared an article on partnering with Carrier, a leading air conditioning brand, to drive the latters digital transformation strategy. Carrier is planning to streamline its operations and improve the pace of innovation, with more sustainability and intelligent buildings. It will do this by building a data lake on the Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3). It will also use its ML services to derive insights from the real-time data across its supply chain and manufacturing.
Yves Mulkers, a data strategist, highlighted companies such as Veritone and Quantifi that have grown by using cloud platforms. He shared an article stating that the cloud is fundamental to the AI model. This is because it provides companies with the large data sets, as well as the scope to scale.

Software for scheduling appointment in beauty salons Software as a service vs WordPress Plugins vs Local Applications – Mighty Gadget
Tech blogging was originally my side hustle, with web development and marketing my main job; nowadays, it is the other way around.
Quite often, I have potential clients come to me with ancient systems, it is not uncommon for some clients to be using some bespoke software that won't run on a modern OS anymore. Beauty salons are often bad for this, they buy something when they set up shop, then a decade later they are still using it.
A lot of web developers will try and sell bespoke software, or plugins for a website to handle the appointment needs of a salon, but more often than not, this is not the ideal solution and paying a monthly fee for a web-based software as a service will provide superior results.
Traditionally most of the applications we used, were installed on a local PC, this used to the case for accounting systems, customer relationship management systems and also appointment systems. Even nowadays it is not uncommon for me to talk to a salon and find out they are using some old PC with ancient software.
Moving everything into the cloud using something like Versum salon scheduling software and paying a monthly fee eliminates the need for a dedicated PC with your appointment software. This reduces hardware costs; quite often, people will use a tablet to handle all the appointments. There is also no software maintenance, as this is all done by the company providing the service. You also have the flexibility of access the system anytime from anywhere using any device with a web browser.
As a web developer, it is tempting to upsell additional functionality to clients; integrating a plugin can add hundreds (or thousands by some agencies) to a quote. While self-hosting your appointment functionality can work perfectly well, and in theory have lower long term costs, the end result is another piece of software that needs updating regularly. It inevitably reduces the load speeds of your website(or increases hosting costs). Running multiple plugins on a website will often also lead to clashes with compatibility and acts as another point for hackers to gain access to your site.
I find the Versum system to be quite affordable and the price scales with the number of staff your have on board.
If you are a solo practitioner, it will be just 25 per month. Then the 2-6 people it is 39, then 69 for up to 12 and finally 109 for unlimited staff.
Because there is no hardware costs or software maintenance on your side, these monthly costs are somewhat mitigated by savings elsewhere.
With Versum the feature list is extensive, this isn't just some online diary but a full suite of online software to manage a Salon.
This includes all the diary and appointment features you would expect, but also comprehensive client communication functions with the ability to send emails and SMS text messages. You get 50 free messages per month then a fee of 5p per message.
Clients can book online, and Versum will provide you a free website if needed. Allowing customers to book online can significantly reduce the number of calls you need to take, which can easily justify the monthly fee.
Beyond that, this offers an accounting and management system allowing you to do financial reports, work out commissions for staff, and break down revenue per employee.
Cloud-based systems are the way forward, and the small monthly costs of running such systems is likely to be negligible compared to the other running costs of your business. A cloud system will help eliminate much of the stress associated with managing a Salon and help free up time to get in more paid work.
In my opinion, Versum is extremely cost-effective and well worth considering if you are looking for a new and improved appointment system.

Amazon: Linux-based Bottlerocket is our new OS for hosting containers in the cloud – ZDNet
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has released a public preview of a new Linux-based operating system that it has built specifically to run containers on virtual machines or bare-metal hosts in the cloud.
The new OS for containers and the growing number of containerized applications promise to make the automation of package updates easier via container orchestration services like Amazon EKS. Amazon initially wants developers to use the Bottlerocket as a host OS in AWS EKS Kubernetes clusters.
Bottlerocket OS only includes what's necessary to run containers to make it more efficient and more secure, according to AWS.
The new Linux-based OS is in public preview for now and is scheduled for general availability later this year.
The bottleneck it aims to address results from the need to update application software packages within container images, which requires separate updates for the container and the host OS.
"Instead of a package update system, Bottlerocket uses a simple, image-based model that allows for a rapid and complete rollback if necessary. This removes opportunities for conflicts and breakage, and makes it easier for you to apply fleet-wide updates with confidence using orchestrators such as EKS," explained AWS evangelist Jeff Barr.
Bottlerocket supports Docker images and images based on the Open Container Initiative (OCI) image format, which ensures broad support for Linux containers.
The goal is similar to Red Hat's CoreOS Container Linux, which is being shuttered on May 26 as Red Hat develops Fedora CoreOS for running containerized workloads. Fedora CoreOS currently doesn't support Azure, DigitalOcean, Google Compute Engine and other Container Linux platforms.
Barr highlights some of the areas where Bottlerocket has been pared back for security: the file system is "primarily read-only" and is integrity-checked at boot time. Additionally, secure shell (SSH) access isn't enabled by default and is part of a separate admin container that runs with elevated privileges and can be enabled as needed for troubleshooting.
Interestingly, most of Bottlerocket has been written in Rust due to the language's ability to address memory security bugs, which Microsoft is also exploring for the same reason in low-level Windows components and its secure infrastructure programming initiative Project Verona. Google has also explored Rust for its new OS Fuchsia.
"Almost all first-party components are written in Rust. Rust eliminates some classes of memory safety issues, and encourages design patterns that help security," AWS says on its Bottlerocket page on GitHub.
Bottlerocket currently includes packages for the Linux kernel, glibc, Buildroot, GRUB, systemd, Wicket, container, Kubernetes, and aws-iam-authenticator.

PTC Unlocks Huge Time Savings for Developers & Technical Designers with New Samples Console in FlexPLM Version 11.2 – Which PLM
Tackling one of retails biggest hidden challenges, the latest version of PTC FlexPLM introduces the samples console adding real-time visibility to deadlines, deliverables and samples data, and saving hundreds of hours across design and development

Attributes from season to colorway and specification to source, can be monitored, updated, and edited in a single location. This provides all of the relevant sample context that enables the interpretation of the samples status in its relationship to the critical path and achieving milestone deadlines.
The samples console will also provide closer collaboration with factory partners giving everyone from product development to production offices to suppliers the ability to track any products ready-to-buy status, in one real-time solution without having to resort to external tools.
This heightened, global visibility will have an immediate, positive effect on retailers and brands go-to-market calendars. Sample tracking alone consumes more than 140 hours per year for development and design partners, and the Samples Console can reduce that time dramatically.

VMware : UKCloud Health awarded place on new 3bn framework from NHS London Procurement Partnership – marketscreener.com
UKCloud Health is approved via the Information, Management & Technology (IM&T) framework providing a flexible and compliant way for healthcare organisations to procure UKCloud's multi-cloud services.
London - - UKCloud Health, the multi-cloud experts dedicated to powering the Healthcare community, has today announced that it has been successfully selected to provide its services via multiple lots (including Consultancy, Hosting and Cyber Security) on the NHS London Procurement Partnership (NHS LPP) framework.
Health and social care organisations such as NHS trusts, clinical practices and hospitals are all embarking on digital transformation initiatives led by NHSX to improve patient outcomes. Cloud adoption is a key enabler of digital technologies such as artificial intelligence and this new framework is designed to service the demand for a more complete Information Management and Technology (IM&T) portfolio, including IT Managed Services, for public sector bodies. The recent State of Cloud Adoption survey revealed that 88% of respondents from UK Health & Life Sciences organisations agreed that lack of skills and resource levels was impeding their cloud adoption. This framework helps the healthcare community address this key obstacle by providing access to approved and compliant services from specialist providers including UKCloud Health.
Cleveland Henry, Director of Cloud at UKCloud Health, said:
"We are delighted to have won a place on this exciting new framework from NHS LPP. Organisations across the health and social care community are increasingly looking to address their challenges with capability and capacity via partnering with approved providers that offer the necessary specialism and value for money. This framework makes it easy for those organisations to access the portfolio of multi-cloud services from UKCloud Health."
As a cloud services provider with extensive experience working with health and social care organisations, UKCloud Health has a comprehensive portfolio of multi-cloud services, professional services and managed services which spans 5 sublots of the NHS LPP framework:

It offers VMware and Oracle virtualised environments for traditional workloads and OpenStack/OpenShift and Microsoft Azure-based cloud for digital application development and data analytics. All services are available via utility-based pricing with no upfront costs, no minimum term lock-in and no exit charges.

Security Managed Services: In order to safeguard and protect IT services from cyber risks, UKCloud Health with specialist partner e2e-assure, has developed a unique solution that allows organisations to leverage their existing investments in security systems and provides the people, processes and technology platform to defend from today's sophisticated cyber landscape. 83% of respondents from Health & Life Sciences organisations agreed that risk and security concerns were an inhibitor to cloud adoption and this service is designed to address this concern and keep patient applications and data safe.
This new framework provides a robust procurement vehicle providing health and social care organisations with access to the strongest and most competitive suppliers. UKCloud Health is well positioned on the NHS LLP framework to offer its skills, capabilities and guidance to help healthcare communities define and implement strategies for cloud adoption. Cybersecurity in a time of coronavirus – Accounting Today
Tax season is one of the peak times of the year for cybercrime. Part of the reason the season can be so lucrative for cybercriminals is because of the increased vulnerability of human targets many people depend on their tax return to pay bills, and so are easy victims to emails claiming there is a problem with their filing or promising more money if they file with someone else, while professional preparers are stressed out, overworked and trying to process vast amounts of information.
But taxes are not the only thing that make people emotionally and psychologically more vulnerable to scams. Anything that heightens fear and anxiety is a boon to online scammers, which is what makes the current coronavirus pandemic prime time for cybercriminals to try and trick people into giving their money away to the wrong people. This week, the U.S. Secret Service issued guidance around coronavirus-related phishing scams.
Cybercriminals are exploiting the coronavirus through the wide distribution of mass emails posing as legitimate medical and or health organizations, the guidance reads. In one particular instance, victims have received an email purporting to be from a medical/health organization that included attachments supposedly containing pertinent information regarding the coronavirus. This led to either unsuspecting victims opening the attachment, causing malware to infect their system, or prompting the victim to enter their email login credentials to access the information resulting in harvested login credentials.
The guidance goes on to note that a rise in teleworking, which the accounting profession is now exploring in full force, increases the risk of cyberattacks that prey on employee anxieties.
Phishing emails are the easiest method of attack that cybercriminals have, explained Monique Becenti, product and channel specialist at SiteLock, a website security solutions provider. Especially with workers in highly affected locations like Seattle and California starting to work remotely, companies should be communicating cybersecurity best practices dont click on links; dont download any attachments. Cybercriminals could also take advantage of remote work by impersonating someone from HR.
More and more firms are issuing notices to their staff, giving them the option to work from home, with all the support they can provide and no penalization for making this choice. National tax firms are leading the charge, as they are in a time of increased client contact and longer office hours.
AbacusNext, which provides cloud hosting and related tools to professional services firms, has been advising their customers on how to approach going suddenly virtual. Some firms are more prepared than others, but even if a firm is less prepared, there are tools they can quickly put in place to lessen the risk of security breaches. Client portals for secure document transfer, for instance, are very useful, as are e-signature tools so that clients dont have to sign anything in person; and VPN (virtual private network) services, which can be very inexpensive, and allow staff to access firm software platforms securely.
The CDC has said, we dont want you to panic, but why not dust off your preparedness plans and review them, said Nicole Fluty, product manager for AbacusNexts OfficeTools products. As a tech provider, we are definitely part of those plans.
When looking for these tech tools quickly, including VPNs, Becenti advised to Google best X tool, and look at reviews for the top five or so to make sure you are buying a legitimate service because another side effect of last-minute planning can be to fall victim to another layer of scams, such as VPN providers that actually steal data.
Some VPN services are very cost effective, around $3.99 just for a license monthly, Becenti said. Look for one that doesnt keep any logs; doesnt affect browsing speeds; has DNS [domain name system] leak protection; and offers 24/7 US-based support.
