Atlassian welcomes third-party developers into the cloud with Forge – SDTimes.com
Atlassian is introducing a new cloud development platform designed to open the Atlassian ecosystem to third-party developers. Forge, which is currently in a cloused beta, was built for developers to build and run their enterprise-ready cloud apps with Atlassian solutions.
Today, the Atlassian Ecosystem has grown into a community of more than 25,000 members consisting of in-house developers who build custom apps for their teams and third-party developers who build apps for the Atlassian Marketplace, the company wrote in a post. The real value, however, comes from the power of extensions to expand the functionality of the Atlassian platform and help teams achieve more each day.

According to Atlassian, its ecosystem includes more than 4,000 apps and integrations and even more private applications. In addition, Mike Tria, head of infrastructure at Atlassian, explained more than 60% of customers leverage a third-party application.
Forge will address current trends Atlassian is seeing in the industry. The platform consists of three components: A serverless FaaS hosted platform, a declarative UI language, and a DevOps toolchain.
The FaaS platform is powered by AWS Lambda and takes away the orchestration complexity for developers as well as authentication, identity, scaling and tenancy problems, Tria explained.
The platforms UI declarative language handles the process of rendering, provides consistency, and aims to simplify the way developers build native app UIs.
Lastly, the Forge CLI enables developers to easily access necessary information.
Forge solves very real problems for developers by removing some of the complexity (and cost!) associated with cloud app development. Creating apps for most cloud ecosystem platforms means that developers are responsible for building, hosting, and operating an entirely independent web service which requires expertise in cloud architecture and management, the team wrote.

Oracle Plans To Ride ERP And Database To Greater Cloud Glory – CRN: Technology news for channel partners and solution providers
Oracle Executive Chairman and CTO Larry Ellison told investors the company expects to thoroughly dominate the ERP and database markets in the coming years, and it will leverage those advantages to spur its entire portfolio of business applications and cloud infrastructure services.
ERP and Autonomous Database are the two products that will "determine Oracle's future in cloud," Ellison said in the second-quarter earnings call for fiscal year 2020.
The tech giant will aggressively press that strategy with Safra Catz as its sole CEO, Ellison said, as Oracle has decided not to hire a second chief executive to fill the vacancy left when Mark Hurd died in October.
"How's our search going for a second CEO," Ellison repeated an analyst's question. "We don't have one. We have no plans for a second CEO."

Oracle notched $9.6 billion in revenue for the quarter that ended Nov. 30a year-over-year gain of less than 1 percent in constant currency, Catz told investors.
Cloud services and license support accounted for $6.8 billion of that amount, growing 4 percent from the previous year in mostly subscription sales. At the same time, cloud and on-premises license sales were down 7 percent to $1.1 billion.
The opposing trendlines of those two segments illustrate the shift of customers from licensing to cloud deals, Catz explained, with services now accounting for more than 70 percent of Oracle's total revenue.
Commanding the ERP and database markets will further shift Oracle's business in that direction and drive the success of adjacent cloud applications across its large portfolio, as well as its second-generation IaaS, Ellison said.
Oracle's Fusion and NetSuite offerings have established a major lead for Oracle over cloud-based ERP competitors, he told investors. And an "integrated suite strategy" is redounding that success to its HCM solution, as well as CX and Marketing clouds.
The next-largest ERP vendor, Workday, only has a few hundred customers, and its "lack of success in cloud ERP is creating opportunities for Oracle," Ellison said.
But the "gigantic opportunity" in the market comes in poaching SAP customers, Ellison told investors.
"SAP never rewrote their ERP applications for the cloud," Ellison said. "As a result, SAP's install base is very vulnerable."
Oracle is already moving many midsize SAP customers to Fusion. And some of the German software giant's largest customers, including many in the heart of Germany, "are already working with us to develop plans to migrate to Fusion ERP," Ellison said.
Oracle's cloud ERP business is growing faster than 30 percent. But with SAP customers recognizing Oracle provides a "safe and compelling alternative to SAP old technology," Oracle can blow well past that growth rate.
"SAP's customer base is up for grabs," he said.
As to its longest-standing business, Ellison said, "we expect to hold onto our database franchise in a big way." Oracle is dominant on-premises and has "very strong" database share in the cloud.
But with the ramping adoption of its autonomous service, Oracle expects to win "overwhelming market share" on-premises and in the cloud, he said.
The database in which "robots configure the system" to minimize human errors is gaining traction faster than any product Oracle's executive can remember, Ellison said.
"It's on its way to being the most-successful new product introduction in our company's history," he said.
Building on a small base, Autonomous Database revenue has grown faster than 200 percent, he said. But it's hard to offer growth predictions to investors as Oracle only has four quarters of data points since the product hit market.
Early adopters now number in the thousands, Ellison said, and sales should ramp significantly over the coming months as Oracle rolls out the self-configuring database in a Cloud@Customer optiona deployment model through which the service is installed on an Exadata machine behind the customer's firewall.
Ellison envisions the Autonomous Database, deployed either in Oracle's cloud or in the on-premises variety, "will replace everything else" and eventually consume its entire install base.
It takes a while to ship next-gen products, he said, but "none of us have ever seen an adoption rate like this before."
Ellison said the only other product he can compare to Autonomous Database is the original Oracle commercial relational database that launched the entire business.
Ellison also took his shots at Amazon Web Services, saying Oracle's databases are "ten times faster than anything Amazon has."
"That means were much cheaper than anything Amazon has. Much safer, much easier to use," he added.
And Oracle's on-prem solutions are readily available, compared to all its competitors who "are trying to create these outposts," he said, seeming alluding to the AWS Outposts service that the cloud giant just started rolling out.
To provide the infrastructure on which it will scale those services, Oracle is building out facilities hosting its Gen2 cloud at a rapid clip. The company will have achieved a notable competitive milestone within one year, Ellison promised.
By the end of 2020, "I'll be able to say we have more Gen2 datacenters in more countries than Amazon has datacenters period."
While Oracle beat FactSet analyst expectations by one cent in posting 90 cents earnings-per-share in non-GAAP metrics, it fell short on revenue predictions.
That led the stock to fall after-hours from a Thursday close of $56.47 to $55.05 at the time of this publication.
Catz started the earnings call by thanking everyone who expressed condolences when Hurd died.
"They mean a lot to us," said the Oracle CEO.
When asked about finding another co-CEO, she deferred to Ellison, who quickly shot down the idea.
Ellison noted that people thought it was odd when the company first decided to go with two CEOs in 2014 after he stepped down from the position. Now they think it's odd to just have one.
But the decision to split the top job a few years ago was the result of an usually good working relationship between Hurd and Catz.
Oracle will continue to expand its management team, Ellison said, "but one of the strategies is to not hire a second CEO.
The search for another leader will be put on hold until "both Safra and I retire," he said, "which is not any time soon."

8 Cloud Outages That Shook The Tech World In 2019 – Analytics India Magazine
The popularity and usage of cloud computing has increased manifold in the last few years. From leading tech companies across the globe to startups, everyone wants to venture into this space. While it is the obligation of the cloud service provider to take responsibility for their infrastructure and ensure security and safety at all ends, sometimes it doesnt quite happen.
Here we list a few instances of cloud outages from the year 2019 when the customer systems and devices were jeopardised due to these outages.

Salesforce
In May 2019, Salesforce faced one of its biggest service disruptions when the deployment of a database script to its Pardot Marketing Cloud ended up granting elevated permissions to regular users. The company had to block the users to prevent employees from stealing sensitive corporate data. It later had to block network access to other Salesforce services like Sales Cloud and Service Cloud to avoid further damage. As a result of this customers were unable to access Pardot Marketing Cloud for 20 hours and in addition, it took them 12 days to completely roll out other Salesforce services such as Sales Cloud and Service Cloud. The company later stated that a faulty database script had led to almost shut down its entire infrastructure and address the issue of broken user permissions.
Amazon AWS
In August, an Amazon AWS US-EAST-1 datacenter in North Virginia experienced a power failure leading to the datacenters backup generators to start failing. It led to 7.5% of the EC2 instances and EBS volumes becoming unavailable. After the power was restored, Amazon determined that some EC2 instances and EBS volumes incurred hardware damage and the data stored on them were no longer recoverable. There was an extensive data loss for some customers proving that storing data in the cloud does not mean that it is completely safe and you do not also need a backup. It was one of the major instances of hardware failure in 2019 and proves that hosting data in the cloud is not always safe.
Apple Cloud
Many iCloud users across the globe briefly got the message of Service Unavailable DNS failure for several hours in July. This widespread cloud outage affected services such as App Store, Apple Music, and Apple TV, Apple Books, Apple ID, Apple Music, Apple Music Subscriptions and more. While the issue has now been resolved, during the time of outage users could not use various functions such as Find My iPhone to locate their devices. The company stated that the cloud outage was a result of a BGP route flap issue that caused severe packet loss for users in North America.
Microsoft
Even Microsoft faced its share of cloud outages this year affecting Azure, Microsoft 365, Dynamics, and DevOps. In May, Microsoft had to face an outage that lasted for more than an hour showing network connectivity errors in Microsoft Azure that deeply affected its cloud services including Office 365, Microsoft Teams, Xbox Live, and several others which are widely used by Microsofts commercial customers. Engineers identified the root cause to be an incorrect name server delegation issue that affected DNS resolution, network connectivity, and downstream impact. While the services were recovered, no customer DNS records were impacted during this incident.
Google Cloud Servers
The cloud servers in US-east1 region were cut off from the rest of the world as there was an issue with Cloud Networking and Load balancing. It caused physical damage to multiple concurrent fibre bundles that serve network paths in us-east1. Google carried out extensive mitigation work post that however, users faced increased latency.
Google Cloud Platform
Very recently Google Cloud Platform (GCP) was found experiencing major issues with services including cloud dataflow, cloud storage, compute engine, affecting multiple products globally. The company stated that its engineers are investigating the matter and will soon mitigate the incident. GCP stated that they have identified the cause and are currently rolling out mitigation. It seemed to have affected some Google Cloud APIs across us-east1, us-east4 and southamerica-east1, with some APIs impacted globally. It is also interesting to note that it came almost 20 days after users faced 100 per cent packet loss to and from ~20 per cent of instances in GCPs us-west1-b region for two-and-a-half hours. The reason for the failure was its chubby lock system which resulted in the control plane losing and gaining leadership in short succession, company stated.
Cloudflare
In July 2019, Cloudflare visitors s received 502 errors caused by a massive spike in CPU utilization on the network. The company said that the 30-minute outage was due to a CPU spike which, in turn, was caused by a bad software deploy that was rolled back. It immediately took to fixing the issue. The company also clarified that this was not an attack and that the internal team are performing a full post-mortem to understand how this occurred and how we prevent this from ever occurring again. Once the issue was fixed, the company stated that everything was back to normal and blamed their own software for the mishap.
Facebook and Instagram face outage
There were issues with Facebook and Instagram earlier this year which was caused due to a server configuration change. During the outage, users faced issues with Facebook-owned properties Instagram and WhatsApp for around 14 hours. Quite recently also users complained that Facebook stopped working and users were not able to carry activities such as sharing a new post or accessing messenger.

Microsoft exists as a large, well-staffed company, and yet the JEDI project will place even greater demands on personnel as new tools are developed and dedicated support people are stuck on the project.
Despite the above issue with Amazon's claim and potential ramifications, Microsoft is moving forward at full-speed to staff up for JEDI.
One of the problems Microsoft is facing on the employee-front is staffing up enough men and women that have sufficient security clearance to work on the new system. According to CNBC, Microsoft is attempting to pull people away from defense contractors and other companies that have worked with the government in the past. All this is verified by the fact that Microsoft has over 100 job openings on its recruitment portal that require a security clearance to even get an interview.
Now we know Amazon is throwing its considerable weight behind a lawsuit that alleges Microsoft gained an unfair upper hand in the bidding process. Should things go completely wrong (for Microsoft, at least), the contract could be voided and either awarded to Amazon or re-opened for a completely fresh round of bidding.
Some may claim Microsoft is pushing forward boldly due to confidence but a more realistic take is that they simply are moving forward with a new customer that they have signed a contract with. A company of this size can't sit idle and wait on judicial review of the deal before looking for personnel to actually deliver on its obligations.

The Wellcome Sanger Institute is one of the world leaders in genomic research and its research deals with some of the biggest medical research questions across the biggest challenges in human diseases - from cancer and malaria to measles and cholera.
Essential to the research function are the Institute's DNA sequencing machines, which produce terabytes of raw information each day. Due to the vast quantity of data, the criticality of local applications and the need for ultra-low latency, cloud hosting would present them with a number of complications and incur significant connectivity costs. The Institute, therefore, hosts Europe's largest, on-premise genomic data centre and uses its high-performance processing capabilities to store and analyse data in real-time.
Under the guidance of EIT, Sanger has deployed Schneider Electric's EcoStruxure IT to proactively manage the data centre, and to improve energy efficiency and resiliency. The campus has issues with power reliability, and any outage could result in loss of important genomic data and costly replacement of sequencing chemicals. Therefore, to protect the laboratory processes from downtime, the Institute has installed individual Schneider Electric Smart-UPS uninterruptible power supplies on each of its sequencers.
