Microsoft called out as big malware hoster thanks to OneDrive and Office 365 abuse – The Register
Updated Microsoft has been branded as "the world's best malware hoster for about a decade," thanks to abuse of the Office 365 and Live platform, as well as its slow response to reports by security researchers.
Infosec expert Kevin Beaumont, who worked at Microsoft as a senior threat intelligence analyst between June 2020 and April 2021, made the comments in response to a report by "cybersec professional" TheAnalyst.
TheAnalyst noted that a BazarLoader malware campaign was hosting its malware on Microsoft's OneDrive service. "Does Microsoft have any responsibility in this when they KNOWINGLY are hosting hundreds of files leading to this, now for over three days?" they asked.
BazarLoader is a family of malware where a spam email attempts to trick recipients into opening a trojan via a link, in this case to an ISO (disk image that can be mounted with one click) containing a malicious DLL with a misleading shortcut called Documents that runs it, leading in time to a potential ransomware attack using Conti.
"Amusingly, while at MS we built a pipeline to alert Google Drive about Bazarloader to have the links taken down, hence why it happened so quickly (literally minutes). Now they've moved to Microsoft infrastructure, who have the pipeline, but can't get Office to remove the files," said Beaumont.
Adding to the misery, "Microsoft's documentation specifically tells you to allowlist domains in question so security solutions don't inspect the content. Try defending a business with a situation like this," challenged Beaumont.
He added that "Microsoft cannot advertise themselves as the security leader with 8,000 security employees and trillions of signals if they cannot prevent their own Office365 platform being directly used to launch Conti ransomware. OneDrive abuse has been going on for years."
Average reaction time to malware reports: Microsoft is among the worst, and Google is also very poor
A site called URLhaus, maintained by Swiss project abuse.ch at the Bern University Institute for Cybersecurity and Engineering, keeps statistics on how long it takes for malware to be removed by the site which hosts it. The latest statistics show that Microsoft has the worst reaction time of any in the top ten sites hosting the most malware urls, at over 29 days.
According to the figures, Google hosts more malware and is also slow to remove it, but with a 14-day response time it is twice as quick as Microsoft.
Malware hosted on OneDrive, reported to URLhaus
The official Twitter account of abuse.ch, which runs URLhaus, said "for the record, the oldest active malware site with an age of 19 months is hosted on Sharepoint and serving GuLoader." It added: "I've seen an increase of 10 new malware sites hosted at MS over the weekend. Whatever they do with these reports filled out through the MSRC API, it is definitely not automated." MSRC is the Microsoft Security Response Center.
Beaumont said that while "My experience is the Azure Storage items should disappear very quickly ... unfortunately Office is in a mess"
The Microsoft sites hosting malware use OneDrive accounts that might have been created specifically for the purpose, or hijacked from legitimate users. It is also common to see malware hosted on business Office 365 accounts that have been compromised.
Automated blocking of suspicious files by the cloud providers is problematic not only because new variants are hard to detect, but also for privacy reasons. Even if malware is detected by Microsoft Defender, it is not "automatically taken down in OneDrive," Beaumont said.
The reaction time measures how long it takes to remove malicious content following a specific report, and is an average time to remove the malware; the full list shows that some reports take just two days and others up to 4 months.
The message for users is that seeing a link is hosted on a familiar name like OneDrive or Google Drive is not a reason to have confidence that it is safe to open - and that allow-listing those domains is a mistake.
We have asked Microsoft for comment.
A Microsoft spokesperson said: "Abuse of cloud storage is an industry-wide issue and we're constantly working to reduce the use of Microsoft services to cause harm. We are investigating further improvements to prevent and rapidly respond to the types of abuse listed in this report." They added: "We continue to encourage customers to practice good computing habits online, including exercising caution when clicking on links to web pages, opening unknown files, or accepting file transfers, and we also encourage customers to report abuse using this form [link]."

Google Extends its Cloud to the Edge, Customer Data Centers – Data Center Frontier

Google is extending its infrastructure to the edge, bringing its cloud hardware and software into telecom networks and customer data centers, including on-premises facilities.
With its new Google Distributed Cloud offering, Google will provide managed cloud nodes that can reside in facilities operated by carriers, colocation providers, and customers. It features a portfolio of managed hardware and software that enable Google Cloud workloads wherever they are needed.
Now more than ever, organizations are looking to accelerate their cloud adoption, said Sachin Gupta, Google Cloud GM and VP of Product for IaaS. Some workloads cannot move to the public cloud entirely or right away, due to factors such as industry or region-specific compliance and data sovereignty needs, low latency or local data-processing requirements, or because they need to run close to other services.
The announcement ahead of todays Google Next conference highlights the growing role of cloud platforms in the growth of edge computing. The new offering, along with the rollout of AWS Local Zones and Microsofts Azure Modular Data Center, further extends the reach of major cloud computing platforms in the edge computing sector.
Edge computing extends data processing and storage closer to the growing universe of devices and sensors at the edge of the network, enabling new technologies and services across low-latency wireless connectivity. Many startups and service providers are targeting edge computing, but cloud platforms play a central role in IT infrastructure, and their strategies will have huge impact on this emerging market.
For Google, the Distributed Cloud enables new ways to leverage partners like carriers and hosting companies to deliver services like 5G wireless, low-latency appplications and hybrid clouds.
The Distributed Cloud offering comes in two services:
Google Distributed Cloud is built on Anthos, an open-source-based platform that unifies the management of infrastructure and applications across multiple data centers and public clouds.
Using Google Distributed Cloud, customers can migrate or modernize applications and process data locally with Google Cloud services, including databases, machine learning, data analytics and container management. Customers can also leverage third-party services from leading vendors in their own dedicated environment.
Google envisions four deployment scenarios for its Distributed Cloud Edge:
Many of todays Google Next announcements build on Googles relationships with partners, like chipmakers Intel and NVIDIA, equipment vendors including Cisco, Dell, HPE, and NetApp, and telecom equipment specialist Ericsson.
Google Distributed Cloud supports Ericssons vision of the network becoming a platform of innovation, enabling companies across the ecosystem to deliver the applications of the future the way they need to, unlocking the full potential of 5G and edge, said Rishi Bhaskar, Vice President and Head of Hyperscale Cloud Providers for Ericsson North America.
Distributed Cloud Hosted is designed to address data sovereignty concerns, especially for customers in Europe, where the European Unions GDPR privacy regulations are boosting demand for cloud technology that can keep workloads within national borders. Google can now team with local partners to provide compliant hosted solutions for public-sector customers and companies with strict data residency, security or privacy requirements.
Google Distributed Cloud Hosted does not require connectivity to Google Cloud at any time to manage infrastructure, services, APIs, or tooling, and uses a local control plane provided by Anthos for operations. The service will be available in preview in the first half of 2022.
Two of the first partnerships are with T-Systems in Germany and OVHcloud in France.
T-Systems and Google Cloud share a common goal of developing cloud-based solutions for European governments and enterprises that meet their digital sovereignty, sustainability and economic objectives, said Frank Strecker, Senior Vice President Global Cloud Computing & Big Data and Edge, T-Systems. Together we will offer a sovereign cloud solution for customers in Germany that gives them peace of mind to meet their rapidly evolving data, operational, and software sovereignty requirements.

Why a Key Google Cloud Product Ended Up Generating Less Than 0.1% of Revenue – The Information
Three months after becoming CEO of Google Cloud, Thomas Kurian tried to shake up the cloud market and gain an edge on his bigger rivals, Amazon and Microsoft. He launched a service called Anthos to make it easier for businesses to host their websites and applications in private data centers and on Google Cloud as well as in clouds operated by Amazon and othersall at the same time.
The move appeared to make sense. The top two Google Cloud customers by revenue, Snap and Apple, had already adopted a multicloud approach, hosting their data and apps across several different public cloud providers rather than relying on one firm alone. Other big companies using Amazon Web Services and Microsoft had also done so.
The catch with Googles Anthos service is that it requires customers to deploy a more sophisticated approach to developing their business applications and managing data, one that suits younger firms better than older enterprises. As it has turned out, relatively few new customers were able to adopt this approach or interested in trying it with Anthos.

As UK-based Civo’s Kubernetes service goes live, boss claims the big cloud rivals are overpriced – The Register
Interview Civo, a cloud provider based in Hertfordshire, has made its flavour of K3s Kubernetes generally available, with the claim that a usable cluster can be fired up in 90 seconds.
K3s is a lightweight Kubernetes distribution from SUSE's Rancher, which claims to be "easy to install, half the memory, all in a binary of less than 100 MB."
Civo is among the smallest of Cloud Native Computing Foundation Certified Kubernetes providers and picked K3s for its speed and efficiency.
CEO Mark Boost was the founder of UK hosting company LCN where he remained until it was sold to Team Blue in early 2019, and also of ServerChoice, which runs three data centres for co-location services.
Boost's pitch is that the giant cloud providers such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform are both expensive and unpredictable in cost.
"I think there's this misconception in the industry that hyperscalers are cheap, which they're not," he tells The Register. "They're more expensive than a lot of other providers out there... the phrase cloud repatriation was coined four or five years ago, where people realise that running physical tin is a lot more cost-effective."
The difficulty with such claims is that comparing like with like is hard. Removing some of the burden of operational costs as well as providing a vast array of features that can be hard to match on-premises keeps customers hooked on the big cloud providers.
Boost says that it is not only the absolute cost, but the challenge of cost management, that is a problem.
According to Civo's own survey of cloud developers conducted in July, around 45 per cent of developers reported surprise bills and difficulties working out the cost of running containers, and 15 per cent said the opaque pricing of hyperscalers was a primary frustration with the technology.
"There's so many services on AWS, everything charged by the hour, these small charges that look meaningless. You have no concept of what that looks like once you start scaling up, until you start to use these services in anger," he says. "I find it a really weird concept that there's companies that just do consultancy around how to understand your AWS bill and how to reduce your spend."
Are the profit margins of the big providers excessive? "I've been involved in the data centre industry since 2008," Boost told us. "That's from a different company that I run called ServerChoice. I've seen the data centre costs and bandwidth, and we've bought from Tier 1 carriers and understand what the wholesale costs of buying bandwidth are, versus the data transfer charges that the hyperscalers charge out, are so far out it's quite incredible" a point which CloudFlare has made repeatedly.
Boost regards high data egress costs as a kind of lock-in. "It makes it a challenge to move from one provider to another, should you wish to do so," he says. That in turn undermines a benefit of Kubernetes. "Kubernetes is meant to be standardised. If I'm not happy with this host, I can move to another host. It should be down to customer service, performance, reliability."
Data transfer fees are easy to measure, but what about the vast array of features on the big cloud platforms, and multi-region resilience, that are hard for a small provider to match? "We're a newer player, we haven't got the scale or the resources that they have access to, but we have the same level of resilience built into our platform," he says.
"There's an opportunity to take a lot of business from Amazon, and the likes of Google and Microsoft." He adds: "We're not trying to compete directly with Amazon, we're trying to focus on five or ten services. We're not trying to be everything to everyone."
What about things like reserved instances or spot prices that enable lower prices from AWS and others? "We haven't done that so far," said Boost. "Our feeling is that we price competitively from the word go. There's not a huge amount of movement for us to go cheaper."
There is one aspect of the Civo platform that could be a good or bad thing depending on perspective, which is the amount of custom code used to provide the service. The company used to use OpenStack, but "we haven't used it for over a year. We've got one legacy region that we've got some customers on. The problem with it, it wasn't built for cloud native or Kubernetes, they've built Kubernetes into it as an afterthought. It wasn't really working for us, it's very complicated, lots of different modules, so we took it back to the drawing board, built from scratch, and architected our own platform called CivoStack. It's optimised for Kubernetes, we still offer VMs but it's through Kubernetes because we use KubeVirt. Everything is cloud native, things like GPU-as-a-service we're going to be offering soon, but it will be done with Kubernetes."
Is there a risk in all that custom code that has not had the scrutiny of open-source software? "It's proprietary code but we do use open-source components within that," says Boost. "Then we extend those, and we've built our own custom operators to build and manage and deploy and scale clusters.
"The approach used to be 'no one got fired for buying IBM' and maybe that expression is now 'nobody got fired for buying AWS'. With a smaller provider, he says, "you can get a much more personal service." The general availability of Civo Kubernetes, he says, "is a chance to take a little bit of business away from hyperscalers, to demonstrate that there's alternatives that offer enterprise functionality at a good price."
Civo claims that its pricing for an equivalent Kubernetes cluster is less than one third of AWS, Google, or Microsoft Azure. That does not take into account reserved capacity discounts and so on, but that is part of the point.

NOVO Health Technology Group, Focus Solutions and Medix Technology partner to create a cloud deployment of Epic EHR on Microsoft Azure, keeping costs affordable for clinics, patients and payers.
APPLETON, Wis.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Patients will have access to a wider range of high-quality physicians and health care providers thanks to a health records implementation launched by NOVO Health Technology Group, Focus Solutions and Medix Technology.
NOVO Health, through its subsidiary NOVO Health Technology Group, entered into an agreement with Epic to provide an integrated, comprehensive health record system to independent health care providers within the NOVO Health community. The agreement empowers independent health care providers with the quality EHR tools they need without compromising their independence.
To customize the implementation of this EHR offering for independent providers and maximize both the affordability and functionality of the offering, NOVO Health Technology Group partnered with Medix Technology and Focus Solutions. Together, they launched the full-stack, cloud-based installation of Epic using Microsoft Azure technology.
Accessibility and affordability are key pillars of the NOVO Health platform for both patients and providers, Curt Kubiak, CEO of NOVO Health. The Epic EHR and this hosting solution addresses both of those critical issues.
Focus Solutions embraced Azure-based cloud solutions to provide NOVO Health with enhanced data flexibility and accessibility through an optimized data network topology.
For providers who participate in NOVO Health programs, data benefits will provide critical fuel for quality care, engagement and patient experience initiatives in the months and years ahead. Providers are also better positioned to further leverage tools such as Microsoft Dynamics to improve patient experience, Microsoft Power BI for advanced healthcare analytics and sharper focus on quality initiatives through the scalability of Azure. The option provides an independent provider group with a unified data center strategy inclusive of all systems beyond their core Epic EHR.
This full-stack Epic implementation on Azure is a technology and health care industry innovation, bringing together best-of-class hardware, software and networking solutions.
"This challenging and collaborative project brought out the best in our team, Bruce Schaumberg, Founder of Focus Solutions, said. Having Medix (Technology) in our corner was invaluable. The best part, though, is coming together to help NOVO Health flourish and position themselves for future success and growth."
Access to critical health information via Epic will enable providers to effectively communicate with local health systems and will dramatically reduce the time it takes to see a patient, provide a proper diagnosis and treatment plan, and return that patient to health and lifestyle.
Executing such a full-stack strategy requires a top-notch team. To support the implementation of this cutting edge solution, talent partner Medix Technology recruited and prepared over two dozen people. This team included analysts and project leaders with Epic certification.
The project to launch NOVO Healths EHR Access Program kicked off September 2020, with the first install of its new Epic-powered solution completed in April 2021.
Medix Technology, a nationwide workforce solutions and consulting organization, brings their considerable experience with Epic implementations to ensure program success. Medix Technology will deliver project advisory services and pre-implementation planning.
"Our team was excited to bring our MedixDirect solution model and experience in project leadership to meet the needs of NOVO Health's unique build," said Eric Born, Vice President of Business Development at Medix Technology. "This partnership was about creating customized solutions for scalable growth."
Focus Solutions, a health care technology company and a Microsoft Cloud Solutions Provider (CSP) based in Green Bay, Wis., will be hosting Epic data for the independent practices.
Were really excited to be able to unlock this kind of connectivity for the independent provider, said Focus Solutions CTO Jason Lamine. Focus Solutions is strategically positioned to assist with data analytics and interoperability solutions and help NOVO Healths providers move the needle.

Anand Rathi sees more upside in this multibagger stock that has surged 163% this year – Mint
Persistent Systems shares have turned into a multibagger stock for this year as the IT service provider's stock has surged over 163% in 2021 (year-to-date) so far. Persistent has announced two acquisitions, which as per Anand Rathi, bring larger client access, allowing it to scale up over the medium term, in addition to payments and insurance tech expertise.
The brokerage firm believes that Persistent's margins will take a 50-75 bps impact but will likely recover by FY24. Anand Rathi has moved its rating to Buy from Hold on Persistent Systems stock and has revised target upwards to 4,275 (from 3290), valuing it similar to Mphasis.
The company has acquired the North Carolina-based Software Corporation International (SCI)/Fusion360 for $53 milion, and Assets and Business of the New Jersey-based Shree Partners/Infosoft for $6.9 million.
Persistent is establishing itself in the fastgrowing payments and Insurtech business through these two acquisitions, enhancing BFSI capabilities, which currently make up 31% of its revenues," Anand Rathi said in a note.
SCI brings 10 clients from within the top 20 banks in North America and has relationships with IBM (FTM implementations, ~75% of revenue) and Microsoft (Cloud hosting). Shree Partners acquisition brings a large insurance tech client, strengthens capabilities in cloud, data AI/ML and infrastructure while consolidating Persistents position in a strategic account, the brokerage added.
Anand Rathi has raised its FY22e/FY23e 5%/3%. The higher EPS of FY23 is despite the margin hit due to retention pay-outs (one-time, to run till FY25) and higher amortization (normalized with growth).
The brokerage values Persistent almost on par with Mphasis, given sustained high growth and hopes it will capitalize on new clients. Though, it sees supply-side challenges as a key risk.
