Citadel’s SWAT engineering team really likes to hire from HSBC – eFinancialCareers (US)

A team of engineers at Ken Griffin's hedge fund Citadel has been making headlines. Known as Citadel X, it's all about the hedge fund's User Interface (UI). It's been growing fast and playing an increasingly important role at the firm, and one bank in particular has a number of engineers behind it: HSBC.

UI engineers are a hot commodity at both banks and hedge funds in 2023. Banks have a tendency to use fintech infrastructure providers, while hedge funds are doing their UI work in-house.

The circa 20 developer team at Citadel X is described by Business Insider as a "SWAT team" that's "called in to assist other engineering groups with a range of back- and frontend challenges." Its core focus is building "applications that are simple, easy to use, visually appealing, and can handle lots of information." Their current big project is Citadel One, a new framework to bring together existing applications to a singular cohesive platform. This is the kind of work that Glue42, OpenFin and Finsemble are doing for banks.

A number of the engineers working in this team have a history at HSBC. Two of these held senior positions working on UI for HSBCs trading platform, Falcon. Jim Higson who was there for two years, "worked on the flagship Falcon team" whose initial success led to the platform being implemented "far beyond the original remit." He describes himself as an "an early member of the Citadel X team," having joined in late 2020.

Chris Blanchard worked on the Falcon project even longer, four and a half years, where he was a UI tech lead. He joined his former teammate at Citadel a year later at the end of 2021. Andrew Boyne was the earliest joiner; he came to Citadel in early 2019 after four years at HSBC where he was a software engineer in GBM equities. He does not specify if he worked within UI at the bank.

All three of these engineers are London based, in close proximity to Citadel's head of core engineering, Neil Slinger. The London UI contingent also has significant input from JPMorgan; Slinger was a managing director and its head of UI (though his attention is no longer solely focused on it) while former VP Lisa Gagarina is an engineering manager in the UI team.

Engineering Report Recommends Demolition of Ocean City Condo … – OCNJ Daily

By DONALD WITTKOWSKI

An Ocean City condominium complex that remains shut down after being declared unsafe in April has a history of structural problems dating back more than 40 years and should be demolished, according to a newly released engineering report.

Structural defects and deteriorating conditions are so significant at the Seaspray condominiums that they present a safety hazard to both the condo residents and the general public, the report by Endicott Engineering concludes.

As a result, it is my professional opinion that the common areas and buildings of the Seaspray Condominium Complex are unfit for continuing use and occupancy and should be demolished. The only reasonable course of action is a complete and total rebuild of the entire structure and complex, engineer Charles Endicott wrote in his April 17 report.

The state Department of Community Affairs ordered the city to close down the complex in late April after the condos were declared to be structurally unsafe. The 32-unit complex has been a fixture at the corner of 34th Street and Bay Avenue since the 1960s and was converted from the Seaspray Motel into condos in 1980.

The Endicott report notes that structural problems were found as far back as 1980 by another engineering company that inspected the Seaspray complex at that time. Those problems were sufficient enough for the developer at the time to have considered demolishing the buildings, Endicott added.

Historically, routine maintenance of the structures and surrounding grounds appears to have been non-existent. This has led to the accelerated deterioration of the concrete and steel in essential structural elements of the foundation and building superstructure. Essentially, the structure has aged poorly, and the overall condition of the structure is worse than similarly aged structures that have been properly maintained, the report states.

Among the defects found by Endicott in each of the buildings were numerous cracks, extensive settling of the foundation, advanced deterioration of the load-bearing beams and structural slabs and shifting of the bearing walls.

There are numerous cracks on the surfaces of the existing precast hollow core concrete slabs. These cracks have never been sealed, resulting in the infiltration of water through the surface concrete and the corrosion of the steel rebar. The corroding rebar has expanded in size, resulting in additional cracking of the beams, which has further reduced the load bearing capacity of these elements, the report found.

Altogether, six engineering studies have been done on the Seaspray complex since 2000, each determining that the buildings were structurally unsound, according to a related lawsuit filed by Dennis E. Block, an owner of one of the condo units.

Block, a New Jersey attorney, and his company, Block Properties LLC, sued the Seasprays managing board and condo association in 2022, claiming that they knew about the structural problems and did not take steps to repair them.

It was not immediately clear whether Block hired Endicott Engineering to inspect the condo complex for possible structural flaws. Charles Endicott sent his report to Block and Neil Byrne, Ocean Citys construction official.

Neither Block nor Endicott could be reached for comment Thursday. Members of the Seasprays managing board and condo association also could not be reached for comment.

In his suit, Block is asking the court to appoint a receiver or trustee to take charge of the Seaspray condos until their fate is ultimately decided. Block wants the buildings demolished and the site sold to a developer, asserting that the Seasprays value is the property.

According to the suit, the estimated repair cost for the condo complex exceeds $9 million, but the managing board and condo association dont have the money. The suit says that a minimum special assessment of $150,000 would be needed on each of the Seasprays condo units for repair costs.

In the meantime, the Seaspray remains closed by order of the state Department of Community Affairs, or DCA. Red tags have been placed throughout the Seaspray complex, noting, This building is declared unsafe for human occupancy. No individual is to occupy this building until the structure is rendered safe and secure.

The Seasprays closure was first publicly disclosed during the April 27 meeting of City Council. City Solicitor Dorothy McCrosson told Council at the meeting that the Seasprays condo association may possibly appeal the shutdown to the DCA or pursue other options.

They have a 15-day right of appeal. The condominium association could decide to make repairs. They could challenge the decision of the DCA. They could decide as a group that theyre going to tear down the building. We dont know what theyll do, but they will act as an association, McCrosson said.

McCrosson also told Council that she was limited in what she could say about the condos because the city has been named as a defendant in the litigation overshadowing the Seaspray.

Fourth Ward Councilman Bob Barr, whose district includes the Seaspray complex, said his and the citys most pressing concern at this time is helping the condo residents who have been displaced by the shutdown.

Were still going through a process of finding people who need it, a place to go, Barr said in an interview Thursday.

Assisting the Seaspray residents in finding new housing are the citys Office of Emergency Management and OCNJ CARE, a nonprofit organization that provides help in the community after disasters.

Barr said he, Congressman Jeff Van Drews office and Ocean Citys realtors have also been trying to help out the Seaspray residents.

My main concern is the welfare of all of the people who live there, Barr said.

Army Corps of Engineers reminds visitors to practice water safety – U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

WASHINGTON, D.C. As millions of Americans plan visits to our nations lakes and rivers, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reminds visitors of the importance of practicing safe, sensible, and thoughtful activities in, on, and around open water.

Tragically, people lose their lives while visiting USACE-managed lands and waters every year. Most of the tragedies are water related. The publics help is needed to reduce the number of fatalities at the more than 2,800 USACE-managed recreation areas nationwide. USACE personnel stress the importance of water safety year-round when talking with visitors, but especially during the summer season because that is when most public recreation fatalities occur.

People of all ages are strongly encouraged to practice water safety this summer. Before entering or being around open water (lakes, rivers, ponds, etc.), keep these things in mind because they could save your life or the life of someone you care about.

Expect the unexpected Accidents can happen within seconds, so always be prepared for the unexpected. If you are ejected from a boat, fall, or jump into water that is colder than 70 degrees, you can inhale water from involuntary gasping, hyperventilation, panic, and sometimes vertigo that can cause you to drown. You can also be knocked unconscious if you are ejected from your boat or fall into the water along the shoreline while fishing.

Wear a life jacket By providing time to be rescued, it will help ensure you survive an unexpected fall into the water. It can also save your life if you become exhausted due to fatigue, waves, or current while swimming. An adult can drown in 60 seconds, and it takes a strong swimmer 10 minutes to put on a life jacket after entering the water. Statistics show that numerous drownings could have been prevented if a life jacket would have been worn, Life Jackets WornNobody Mourns.

Know your swimming abilities Be aware that swimming in open water is different from swimming in a pool, and your swimming ability decreases with age. It is never too late to take swimming lessons and learn to swim well. Several people every year drown while swimming to retrieve boats and toys. Let those things go because they are not worth losing your life over.

Alcohol and water are a deadly combination Alcohol induces an inner ear condition (caloric labyrinthitis) that can cause you to become disoriented when underwater and not realize which way is up. If you jump or fall in the water, you can become disoriented and swim down instead of up to safety, causing you to drown. This is more to likely happen if you have been consuming alcohol.

Understand boaters hypnosis It is a condition brought on by the effects of sun, wind, noise, vibration, and motion experienced during a day of boating. Boaters hypnosis can slow your reaction time almost as much as if you were legally intoxicated. Adding alcohol to this condition intensifies the effects.

Be Aware of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning While Boating - Carbon monoxide poisoning is not limited to boats with enclosed cabins. It has proven to be deadly on open motorboats too. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless toxic gas produced when a carbon-based fuel burns, such as gasoline, propane, charcoal, and oil. Carbon monoxide can kill you while you are on or in the water near a boat, so use a marine carbon monoxide detector, always maintain fresh air circulation, seat children in the forward-most seating on a boat, shut off boat motors to avoid unnecessary idling, be aware of emissions from other boats, and seek medical attention immediately if you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning.

Watch Your Children Constantly supervise your children whenever theyre in, on, or near open water. Always keep them within arms reach. To keep them safe keep yourself safe by ensuring you and they wear properly fitted life jackets whenever enjoying your favorite outdoor water recreational activity.

Air Temperature and Water Temperature are not the same The water temperature in rivers and lakes can be significantly colder than the air temperature and jumping or falling into cold water can be a dangerous shock to your body, so its important to wear a properly fitted life jacket to increase your chances of survival. Keep in mind that although the air temperatures are rising, water temperatures are slow to rise, and some lakes and rivers have cold water temperatures year round.

10 books from Jordan Petersons recommendation lists that you must read – Lifestyle Asia India

1984 by George Orwell

Written over seven decades ago, this political novel is a timeless classic. It gives a bone-chilling account of a leader, Big Brother, taking complete control of a superstate, Oceania, through his Party. The totalitarian government implements violent forms of manipulation, mass surveillance and harsh measures to control the people of Oceania. The Guardian, a British daily, had described it by saying, Orwells novella is a warning for the human race.

Jordan Peterson on the book: I came to understand, through the great George Orwell, that much of such thinking found its motivation in hatred of the rich and successful, instead of true regard for the poor. Besides, the socialists were more intrinsically capitalist than the capitalists. They believed just as strongly in money. They just thought that if different people had the money, the problems plaguing humanity would vanish, Peterson said about Orwell and his works, according to Goodreads.

Pope Francis, Jordan Peterson, and Social Justice – Word on Fire

As a number of his tweets indicate, Jordan Peterson disagrees with Pope Francis about social justice. But is this an authentic disagreement in substance? Or is it merely an equivocation in which the term social justice is understood in one way by Peterson and in a different way by the Pope?

Petersons understanding of social justice is presumably shaped by his years as a professor both at Harvard and the University of Toronto. Social justice in these contexts includes the idea of equitythat every group should be proportionately represented in every endeavor. For example, in his book How to Be an Anti-Racist, Boston University professor Ibram X. Kendi writes, Racial inequity is evidence of racist policy. If Blacks, Asians, Latinos, and whites are not equally represented in all endeavors in society, then racism is the explanation.

Yet, as Black economist Thomas Sowell argues,

Any under-representation of any group in any endeavor can be taken as evidence or proof of discriminatory bias. But those who argue this way cannot show us any societyanywhere in the world, or at any time during thousands of years of recorded historythat had all groups represented proportionally in all endeavors.

He notes that the National Hockey League has more players from Sweden than California, even though California has almost four times the population of Sweden. This under-representation of Californians is not explained by bias and discrimination against them, but rather by the fact that more people grow up playing hockey in Sweden. Sowell adds, If there is not equality of outcomes among people born to the same parents and raised under the same roof, why should equality of outcomes be expectedor assumedwhen conditions are not nearly so comparable? This is not to deny the existence of racism, but rather to deny that racism and racism alone explains all racial disparities, as Edward Feser points out in his fantastic new book, All One in Christ: A Catholic Critique of Racism and Critical Race Theory.

Equity is even more obviously problematic when considering men and women. If half of coal miners are not women and half of kindergarten teachers are not men, is the only explanation of this difference really injustice and sexism? No one disputes that part of this inequity may indeed be due to sexism, but should we assume that all the difference is the result of sexism and sexism alone? There is another plausible explanation for why more men are coal miners and more women are kindergarten teachers. On average when comparing the sexes, men take more physical risks and women value working with people more than things. These differences are not caused by patriarchal oppression. As recent research has pointed out, the average differences between men and women increase, rather than decrease, in societies that have less patriarchal oppression, like Sweden and Norway, in comparison with societies with more patriarchal oppression, like Algeria and Afghanistan. If a cause is reduced, the effect should be reduced. But reducing patriarchal oppression does not reduce the differences on average between men and women. When women have more freedom, they tend not to want to be coal miners, oil riggers, or loggers. So, when Peterson hears social justice, he presumably thinks in part of Kendis equity. He rejects equity, so he rejects social justice.

Pope Francis understanding of social justice reflects Catholic social teaching. Ive summarized elsewhere seven principles of Catholic social teaching, which include respecting every individual human being, promoting the family, protecting property rights, working for the common good, respecting workers, and pursuing peace. Catholic social teaching is not the same as Kendis sense of equity. The term equity appears just twice in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Justice toward men disposes one to respect the rights of each and to establish in human relationships the harmony that promotes equity with regard to persons and to the common good. But note that the term equity, as used here, has no connection to group identities, let alone the idea that if all groups are not equally represented in all endeavors of society that the only explanation of this is injustice. In the Catechism, the only other instance of equity is this one:

There exist also sinful inequalities that affect millions of men and women. These are in open contradiction of the Gospel: Their equal dignity as persons demands that we strive for fairer and more humane conditions. Excessive economic and social disparity between individuals and peoples of the one human race is a source of scandal and militates against social justice, equity, human dignity, as well as social and international peace.

In this case too, we do not find Kendis sense of equity, but rather something much more modest. If all individual human beings have intrinsic dignity and value, then we have an obligation to work to ensure that they live in fair and humane conditions, including the equality of opportunity. If a particular group is excluded from equality of opportunity (as occurred, for example, during the apartheid in South Africa), this is contrary to social justice. But equality of opportunity, fair and humane conditions for all human beings, is not the same thing as equality of outcome (equity in the social justice sense as used on university campuses).

Peterson writes, There is nothing Christian about #SocialJustice. Redemptive salvation is a matter of the individual soul. Again, the issue is what exactly is meant by social justice. If they are to follow Jesus, Christians must love others, including their enemies. If they are to follow Jesus, Christians must be mindful of the poor in body and in spirit. According to the Gospel of Matthew in chapter 25, there is an intrinsic connection between the salvation of the individual soul and the care of the vulnerable. Christ the King will say to those on his right, Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. If Peterson disagrees with this, and I doubt he does, his beef is not with Pope Francis but with Jesus.

On the other hand, social justice as the term is used at universities typically means an endorsement of a very specific set of political policies to care for the hungry, thirsty, and vulnerable. At universities, it is often assumed that to be for social justice is to be for socialism.

No Christian can deny the duty to care for the poor, but Christians can and should try to discover the best means to care for the poor. Is this direct action as undertaken by the Missionaries of Charity founded by St. Mother Teresa? Is this massive governmental social programs of welfare? Is this promoting business so as to provide well-paying jobs for more people? Is the best way to help those in need a combination of approaches? Are there unforeseen negative side-effects of some approaches? It may be that a variety of approaches is best, opening up room for Christians to undertake different ways to help those in need. Christians of good will can and do disagree about what specific policy proposals help those in need. Some may think raising the minimum wage by three dollars helps the poor because it gives them more take-home pay. Others may think raising the minimum wage by three dollars harms the poor because it will result in fewer jobs, and fewer jobs means less opportunity to gain the experience needed for better jobs.

Catholic social teaching is not a specific public policy requirement that sees a single solution for the problems of the poornamely, a large governmentally administered solution. Indeed, Catholic social teaching includes the principle of subsidiarity, according to which a community of a higher order should not interfere in the internal life of a community of a lower order, depriving the latter of its functions, but rather should support it in case of need and help to co-ordinate its activity with the activities of the rest of society, always with a view to the common good. Indeed, The principle of subsidiarity is opposed to all forms of collectivism. It sets limits for state intervention. So, social justice according to Catholic social thought differs radically from a socialist conception as found on many university campuses. For this reason, as a matter of official teaching, the Catholic Church rejects Marxist liberation theology.

Is Jordan Petersons disagreement with Pope Francis merely verbal or actually substantial? The answer to this question depends in part on how exactly we define the term social justice.

Petition seeks to cancel Kelowna tour stop by controversial … – Revelstoke Review

[Jordan] Petersons views directly jeopardize the safety and well-being of marginalized communities

Kelowna city council is being asked to cancel Jordan Petersons speaking engagement in the city.

An online petition started by Brent Forder calls on Mayor Tom Dyas and council to stop Peterson from appearing at Propera Place on May 26 for his Beyond Order tour.

Mr. Petersons views directly jeopardize the safety and well-being of marginalized communities, especially women, transgender and gender non-conforming people, the petition claims. Violence against women and 2SLGTBQIA+ folks starts with words so giving this man a platform to speak is directly impacting safety of marginalized communities.

The petition also asks residents to call the city and leave a complaint or plea about Petersons event.

Peterson, a psychologist, author and media personality, gained attention in 2016 after criticizing Bill C-16, a law that added gender expression and gender identity to the Canadian Human Rights Act.

The petition states that Mayor Dyas has the power to stand up to Petersons menacing campaign of bigotry and help protect the safety and inclusion of all Kelowna community members.

Jordan Peterson’s Reason for Why Joe Rogan Is ‘So Successful’ Goes Viral – Newsweek

Jordan Peterson has shared the reason why he believes Joe Rogan has proved to be so successful with his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience.

Rogan started the podcast on YouTube back in 2009. By 2015, it had grown to become one of the world's most popular podcasts, regularly pulling in millions of views.

In December 2020, Rogan signed a licensing deal with Spotify for the platform's exclusive rights to broadcast the podcast. The deal was widely reported at the time to be worth $100 million, although The New York Times reported in February 2022 that the true number for the three-and-a-half-year deal was "at least" $200 million.

While Rogan has faced backlash over the years for some of the views shared by the host and his guests on certain episodes, the former Fear Factor presenter remains the jewel in Spotify's crown with the most listened-to podcast.

Canadian psychologist and media personality Peterson, who has been a guest on Rogan's podcast on a number of occasions, sought to explain the recipe of the broadcaster's success in a video that has gone viral on social media.

"So one of the reasons Joe Rogan is so successful, by the way, is that that's what Joe doeshe just asks questions," Peterson said in the clip. "He isn't trying to get something from his guests. He's not trying to become more famous. He doesn't need any more money.

"There's no instrumental utilization of language in his discourse. He's just a humble lunkhead, in the most profound sense, who would like to know more than he knows, and who asks all the stupid questions he can think up.

"And it turns out that he's actually very, very smart and very well educated now after talking to hundreds and hundreds of people and listening," Peterson went on. "And so the stupid questions he asks aren't stupid, and they're questions that are shared by virtually everyone who's listening. And he takes his listeners along on this process of exploratory endeavor, and it's the pathway to success."

The YouTube clip, which Peterson shared on Twitter on Wednesday, was met with widespread praise by his followers.

Peterson is known for his conservative views on issues, but he was once simply known as a clinical psychologist and professor. After working as an assistant and associate professor at Harvard Universitywhere he published several influential papers on familial alcoholism and other issuesthe Canadian returned to his home country with a position at the University of Toronto.

He wrote the best-selling books Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief, 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos and Beyond Order: 12 More Rules for Life. His public stature began to grow as a result and Peterson was soon a well-known intellectual.

He became recognized outside the intellectual community because of his controversial views on transgender rights, which he laid out in a series of YouTube videos in 2016. Among his divisive stances was his refusal to refer to students by their chosen gender pronouns.

One especially notorious incident from 2016 came when Peterson was filmed speaking to transgender students. He argued to them that their activismand political correctness in generalhad a negative impact on society.

The video racked up millions of hits on YouTube, and Peterson was soon bragging to Rogan about how he'd learned to profit from controversy.

"I shouldn't say this, but I'm going to, because it's just so g****** funny I can't help but say it: I've figured out how to monetize social justice warriors," Peterson said on Rogan's podcast in 2018. "If they let me speak, then I get to speak, and then I make more money on Patreon If they protest me, then that goes up on YouTube, and my Patreon account goes way up."

Peterson has also faced backlash for other comments he has made. In July 2022, his Twitter account was suspended indefinitely after he refused to apologize for comments he made about trans actor Elliot Page. It was later reinstated when Elon Musk took over the social media platform.

In 2022 Don't Worry Darling director Olivia Wilde described Peterson as a "pseudo-intellectual hero to the incel community" in Interview magazine. "Incels," short for involuntary celibates, refers to an online subculture of men who express extreme resentment and hostility to women in their online discussion groups.

When asked about Wilde's comment during an interview with Piers Morgan in September, Peterson responded: "You know, people have been after me for a long time because I've been speaking to disaffected young men."

What Judaism Teaches About Lust | Rafi Eis – First Things

Jewish teaching is clear that sexual and erotic activity is permissible only within heterosexual marriage. Any other sexual pleasure is prohibited. Of course, it is difficult for human beings to live up to this principle in real life. The Hebrew Bible and Talmud therefore offer rules and teachings to help individuals live virtuously.

For instance, Jewish law prohibits non-marital erotic touch. It also forbids men from ogling women. The Code of Jewish Law declares that a person must be exceedingly careful regarding matters of sexuality, to the extent that one should avoid walking past a brothel.

It is therefore puzzling that conservative commentator Dennis Prager recently asserted in a discussion with Jordan Peterson that looking with lust is not a sin in Judaism. Then, though he explained that he was not giving a religious answer, he stated that men want variety, and that pornography in lieu of one's wife is awful, while pornography in addition to marital intimacy, as a substitute for adultery, is not awful. Importantly, Prager later clarified that the discussion did not fully express his nuanced view. His main point is that Judaism is a behaviorist, law-based religion in which sins of behavior are far worse than sins of thought. It should be emphasized that Prager is one of the great champions of the biblical worldview for general society and I am deeply indebted to him for his insights and accomplishments.

But the fact is that thought and intent do play important roles in Judaism, especially within the realm of sexuality. The Talmud teaches that one may not have relations with ones wife while thinking about another woman.

In the conversation with Peterson, Prager contrasts Jewish law and ethics with the Sermon on the Mount, in which Jesus declares, You have heard that it was said, You shall not commit adultery. But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart (Matt. 5:2728). Prager is certainly correct that capital punishment only applies to physical adultery in the Hebrew Bible (Lev. 20:10). But this does not mean that there is no equivalent to Jesus's teaching on lust in Judaism, as Prager says. Other teachings in the Sermon on the Mount contradict the Jewish tradition, but Jesuss teaching on lust is not that different from what the Hebrew Bible and Talmud say.

Lust is not a momentary, passing, unwilled and unwanted illicit thought. It is a sustained ideation that is prohibited. The Ten Commandments forbid lusting for a married woman (Exod. 20:14, Deut. 5:18). The Book of Job declares that having ones heart ravished by the wife of my neighbor is debauchery, a criminal offense, for indeed, pious Job made a covenant with [his] eyes not to gaze on a maiden (31:1). The Talmud goes a step further and describes masturbation as metaphorical adultery with the hand (Babylonian Talmud, Niddah 13b).

Lust and pornography are prohibited regardless of whether they are in lieu of or in addition to marital intimacy. The Hebrew Bible and Talmud do not agree with Jesus in equating lust with adultery, but they indicate that the gap between these two sins is quite small. One could say that in Judaism, adultery is a capital offense and watching pornography is a felony.

Pragers erroneous conclusion stems from a too simplistic understanding of thought sin vs. action sin in Judaism. Human beings are not mere robots. We are sentient. Actions can influence thoughts and thoughts can spur us toward actions. The Hebrew Bible therefore demands that we exert discipline over both. We must not commit adultery and we must not lust. We must not murder and we must not hate our brother in our heart (Lev. 19:17). Thoughts and actions are central to the human condition and are subject to Jewish law. The main distinction between them is that only actions are punishable in a human court of justice.

Furthermore, intentionally viewing pornography is not a thought crime, it is an action. Jewish courts in antiquity did adjudicate cases of putting oneself in a position to view lewd activity.

What about Pragers assertion that men want variety? Here Jewish law straightforwardly states that the man should focus on his wifes pleasure, not his own. Lord Rabbi Jonathan Sacks describes marriage as the single most humanizing institution in history. It is the place where spouses channel their brute sexual desire into love, dedication, and procreation. This can only be done by focusing on the needs of ones spouse. Giving supersedes receiving.

Marriage is therefore a covenant, which emphasizes how the new unit grows together, not what each individual gets out of it. Spouses may have different sexual expectations, and sometimes circumstances interfere with intimacy, but the covenant of marriage requires loyalty and commitment regardless. Pornography destroys that covenantal commitment and feeds existing dissatisfaction with fantasies about what could or should have been. Ultimately, it ruins marriage. Purity of mind, in contrast, increases dedication and builds marriage.

The Talmud recounts an incident where a man lusted for a specific woman to the point where doctors recommended satisfying his desire as a cure, lest he die. But the sages refused to allow any activity between them that could give him erotic pleasure.

Reality does not need to conform to mens desires. Rather, men need to control themselves according to Gods will and refine themselves into dedicated husbands and fathers. That is the Jewish teaching for a successful marriage, society, and civilization.

Back it up: Most dead hard drives fail within 3 years – PCWorld

Follow any tech site with regularity and youll hear the same refrain over and overback up your files. The longer you wait, the more you flirt with disaster, and you dont have as much time as you might think. In March, a Los Angeles storage recovery service revealed that on average, their clients failed hard drives died within the first three years of use. And now a study from Backblaze has corroborated that finding with much more data.

In the original report, Secure Data Recovery came to its discovery by cataloging the details of 2,007 faulty drives from six prominent manufacturers, with capacities ranging from 40GB to 10TB. Backblazes latest release of drive statistics (which the cloud storage and backup service publishes quarterly about the storage powering its data centers) paints a similar picture.

In fact, for the Q1 2023 info drop, the company purposely dug into its own data from the past ten years, after seeing the Secure Data Recovery info. Turns out that Backblazes 17,155 failed drives clocked an average age of two and half yearsor a little bit less than the average of two years and 10 months in the SDR report. The longest-wearing drives survived for almost five years while the shortest lived bit the dust in less than a year.

Backblaze also breaks out the dead drives by their model numbers and capacities, providing a deeper glimpse into individual drive reliabilitysort of. The company cautions against making assumptions about capacity influencing potential lifespan, especially the data initially suggests that smaller drives last longer than larger ones. Backblazes data centers have completely retired lower capacity storage while the fate of some bigger models remains to be seen. But in case you were curious, the average age of Backblazes failed drives no longer in operation istwo years and seven months.

Backblaze just drove a stake into any assumptions that a bigger data pool would soften or disprove Secure Data Recoverys results. If your drive is going to bite the dust, itll happen sooner than most people expectthough the chances of it happening arent as high as some people might fear. Backblaze found that of 236,893 drives and 30 different models, they had a 1.4 percent lifetime annualized failure rate (or general rate of failure within any given year of service since Backblaze began tracking this data). So the likelihood of your storage dying is pretty low, especially considering the drives in Backblazes data centers is being run much harder than in an average persons computer.

Still, 1.4 percent of the millions of drives out in the world is still a big number and you wont know if you fall into that unlucky group until your drive stops responding. And thats a point that Secure Data Recovery stressed in its post, recommending the classic 3-2-1 approach. (See, tech journalists arent trying to scare you unnecessarily). That translates to three copies of your data on at least two different forms of media (e.g., two separate drives or one drive and the cloud), with one copy stored off-site.

Feeling overwhelmed by the idea of creating and maintaining that many copies of your data? Its actually not much work if you use the right tools. Our guide walks you through the basics of setting up a backup system. Weve also got suggestions for the best automated backup software, external hard drives, and cloud backup services. Remember, a drive having a short natural life isnt the only reason to back up. You could end up on the wrong side of ransomware, your computer getting destroyed by an act of nature (or man), or someone making off with your PC.
