Data hoarding and the role of storage – TechTarget

This year, data generation will exceed 100 zettabytes, and there's no end in sight. Enterprises are faced with balancing storage and management costs with the risk of potential data loss.

But companies may be tempted to keep more data than they need. Storage prices have fallen, and newer technologies like AI promise better and faster data insights.

Still, retaining every bit and byte can open up liabilities that outweigh potential value, according to Vincent Berk, chief revenue and strategy officer at cybersecurity firm Quantum Xchange and former computer science faculty member at Dartmouth College.

"There is an enormous amount of data being stored because of the unproven premise that one day value can be extracted from it," he said.

Berk warned that sweeping data retention policies can become costly. As companies generate and store more data, the risks associated with data loss, leaks and breaches go up. While determining what a company should keep and what should go involves departments outside of IT, storage admins should look beyond being inventory keepers to also being bookkeepers helping set standards.

Companies shouldn't focus on storing too much or too little but storing what is valuable and what is useful, according to Marc Staimer, president of Dragon Slayer Consulting, an analyst firm in Beaverton, Ore. The problem for companies is determining the value of data -- especially its future value, he said.

"You don't know what might be valuable," Staimer said. "But if you have everything, you're covered."

Companies can take a few steps when determining vale, according to Christophe Bertrand, an analyst at TechTarget's Enterprise Strategy Group. First they need to consider the data and its use from a compliance and governance perspective. Then they should consider its value from a business perspective. After that, companies can weigh the cost of storing data and decide whether to keep it.

"It is not a matter of storing less or storing more but storing smart," Bertrand said.

Storage vendors have created techniques to do just that through data compression and deduplication --techniques that strive to use current storage hardware more efficiently. Data compression changes the structure of data to reduce the size of its storage footprint. Data deduplication removes redundant copies of data. These data reduction techniques have been around for a while but continue to see refinement, Bertrand said.

Vast Data, for example, added similarity-based data reduction to Vast CLI in recent years to reduce similar data blocks.

The larger question for companies is still determining exactly what they are storing and why.

"How do you manage something you don't understand or can't measure?" he asked.

As data continues to grow, there will be an increased focus on data storage management and classification, Bertrand said.

This is where companies like Hammerspace, which was founded in 2018, or a product like Spectra Logic's Spectra Vail, which launched in 2021, come into play. Both products strive to unify data stored in distributed environments.

Hammerspace and Spectra Logic provide similar functionality. Hammerspace offers an abstraction layer across storage vendor products through its Global Data Environment. Spectra Vail provides software to create a single global namespace across on-premises and cloud native storage offerings.

Data storage management vendors like Hammerspace and its competitor Komprise offer companies better visibility into what data they're storing. But they may not help companies make decisions about how to overcome data hoarding tendencies.

There is an enormous amount of data being stored because of the unproven premise that one day value can be extracted from it. Vincent BerkChief strategy officer, Quantum Xchange

Given that storage prices have come down over the last decade, companies may want to hang onto as much data as possible for some perceived future worth, according to Jared Endicott, an analyst at Launch Consulting Group, an IT consulting firm headquartered in Bellevue, Wash.

"Roughly 80% of the data stored today is unstructured: text, emails, correspondences and so on," Endicott said. "That is the kind of data folks anticipate being useful for machine learning and AI purposes."

Even if that is the case, companies need to have a roadmap, be conscious of what is being stored, create policies to only save valuable or necessary data or data that fits the roadmap anticipations, he added.

David Feller, vice president of product management at Spectra Logic, said data hoarding is on the cusp of getting worse. By his accounting, companies are saving only about a fourth of the data they generate. But as AI advances and eventually eases data management and data governance problems, companies will keep more data than before.

"The value of AI is going to be in analyzing and putting metadata constructs on top of the data so that that it becomes valuable," he said. Companies will eventually benefit from data hoarding tendencies, he said, "because it's really hard to recreate it."

If companies are going to store more data, they will also need policies for managing and deleting it when it is no longer useful, Berk said.

Storage administrators should play a part in building out those policies. While they are primarily concerned with ensuring data is available to the business, storage admins interact with the data. That means they could bear some responsibility for a data leak. Berk advised that admins be aware of issues such as the minimum requirements for judging the liability of the data they handle and set security standards from there.

Staimer said establishing polices around what not to retain isn't easy; it always just depends. He reiterated that it comes down to the value and potential value of the data weighed against how much it costs to store the data and the liabilities associated with it.

"Data governance is, at the end of the day, what you need to have to determine [when to delete data]," he said.

Adam Armstrong is a TechTarget Editorial news writer covering file and block storage hardware and private clouds. He previously worked at StorageReview.com.

Android or iPhone: Why My Android Is Better Than Your iPhone? – Gizchina.com

Android or iPhone, which one to choose? This is a never-ending race until one of them dies. Someone has to end this discussion, and I am happy to do it. This blog will explain why you should choose Android phones over iPhones. What is more common is that both smartphones offer almost similar specifications, but quality differs.

It is obvious that iPhone offers better quality than Android phones but to some extent. If you get a lot of features, you wont care about the quality. The best thing about Android phones is that they allow users to customize their phones the way they want. When I talk about quality differences, iPhone is way ahead in-camera results. You can take a crystal clear photo from iPhones camera, unlike most low-end Android devices.

However, the release of the latest Samsung Galaxy S23 has leveled the playing field. In our blog, Android or iPhone, we will discuss how some features allow Android devices to dominate iPhones. On Android devices, we have several options for customization and personalization. In this blog, I will give you reasons why you should choose an Android phone over an iPhone.

Android phones offer more features and options, such as colors, sizes, designs, prices, and specifications. There is a lot of variety for you to choose from. Android phones are inexpensive and offer more features with flagship-level experience. Some of the best budget Android phones are the OnePlus Nord N20 5G, Samsung Galaxy A54, and Google Pixel 6a.

Moreover, Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, OnePlus 11, and Google Pixel 7 Pro offer an almost iPhone-level experience but at a lower price. The most prominent features in Android devices include fingerprint scanners, reverse wireless charging, headphone jacks, fast charging, split-screen multitasking, and much more. Plus, all of these features are not yet available on iOS devices.

Almost all Android devices come with the same charging cable and connector. Today, Android devices have USB-C ports for connectivity. Apple also uses the USB-C standard in its latest MacBooks and iPads. When I visit my relatives in my village, I often forget to take my Android charger with me. In short, I never have a problem charging my phone.

Fast charging is a fantastic addition in this regard; whats worth it is that with a fast charger, you dont have to wait too long to use your phone. The Realme GT3 is the best example; you can charge this phone in less than 10 minutes. Meanwhile, replacing the charging cable if it gets damaged is easy and inexpensive. In contrast, theres no extra charging cable in the iPhone box, and youll have to buy the more expensive charging cable if you lose one.

Apple iPhones do not offer additional storage options; they only come with built-in, non-expandable storage. You also have to pay a lot of money to get extra storage. If you run out of space, you still have to buy more.On the other hand, Android phones come with an extra slot for a microSD card. This allows you to increase your phones storage space without deleting applications or other files.

Android phones are easier to sync with Windows PCs than iPhones. For example, you can use a USB cable, cloud storage services, or Bluetooth to share data. Plus, all brands have their own sync software, making it easier for you to access your phones content.

There is also a Windows Phone Link app for reading and responding to text messages, making and receiving phone calls, and more. To perform these functions on iPhone, youll need to master iTunes one great tool for almost everything.

Android allows for diverse and easy customization options, such as changing the home screen lock, custom ringtones, interacting with the device, and more. Overall, the platform allows users to change the entire look and feel. In addition, there are no restrictions on downloading apps from the Google Play Store.

Users can also download apps from third-party platforms. On the other hand, iPhone restricts its users from downloading apps only from the App Store. There is also a strict security system that makes customization difficult.

There is very little similarity between Android and iPhone in terms of easily accessible settings. On iOS devices, you can swipe down from the top right to access the control center. Shortcuts in the drop-down control center include airplane mode, volume and brightness controls, a calculator, and more.

On Android, you have to swipe down from the top right to access the one-tap settings shortcuts. In addition, Android offers almost half of the settings icons in the drop-down list. For example, you can access the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth icon to connect to a new Wi-Fi connection or pair a new device without going to the Settings page.

The most amazing thing about the Android system is that it allows users to replace the launcher in one go. Android brands offer a wide range of default themes for their smartphones. Therefore, if you are bored, you can change the entire theme of your smartphone. You can also customize your app icons using third-party applications.

Apple doesnt allow users to change the look and feel of the Home screen. Moreover, iOS devices allow only one icon per app, which you can rearrange in turn. The missing bit here is that you can only rearrange their order.

Android is always a better, cheaper, and fantastic choice for people looking for something handy. Android devices offer a wide range of features that you wont get on iOS devices. For instance, fast charging and reverse wireless charging are one of the most demanding features in 2023. iPhone users have been proud of having the best camera ever for years, but recent releases have shifted the momentum back to Android.

Leading Irish CSP eir evo to modernise its private cloud with HPE … – IT PRO

Irelands largest cloud service provider, eir evo, has chosen HPEs GreenLake edge-to-cloud platform to modernise its Digital Planet private cloud offering.

The company will leverage the full range of HPE GreenLake cloud services to meet the increasing demand for its platform, accelerate deployment of new services, and improve the overall customer experience.

One of two HPE Platinum Partners in Ireland, the managed services provider has operations and data centres in Dublin, as well as locations in the UK and US, and partners with a range of tech businesses such as HPE, Microsoft, Cisco, Dell, Red Hat, and more.

The firms portfolio of services helps customers leverage new technologies across cloud, cyber security, networking, infrastructure, and connectivity.

Martin Wells, managing director at eir evo, said the company found HPE GreenLake to be the optimal fit to futureproof Digital Planet.

In recent years sustainability has come into sharp focus for us and our customers, he explained. A key advantage is the modern cloud experience of HPE GreenLake that delivers service flexibility and choice, and the pay-per-use as a service model.

These features help us manage costs and carbon footprint as they prevent overprovisioning and provide insights into energy consumption, which, in times of soaring energy costs and the global climate crisis, is critical.

Eir evos Digital Planet platform is designed to provide secure and compliant enterprise-class cloud hosting and managed IT services, enabling businesses to build their own bespoke cloud solution.

The offering provides multi-tenant or dedicated compute, storage, monitoring, network, as well as backup and disaster recovery protection, built to specific workload requirements.

As the platforms customer base continues to grow, the firm says its system upgrade to HPE GreenLake will facilitate the increase in workload and data, as well as performance growth.

The addition will also enable eir evos teams to implement changes faster, while ensuring compliance with regulations such as theGDPR. Thats thanks to HPE GreenLakes zero trust-enabled architecture, which provides embedded security technologies and verifies the integrity of data infrastructures.

Eir evo will combine these capabilities with HPE Zerto, the tech giants solution for journal-based continuous data protection and recovery, to enable high-end security orchestration across its cloud services - with minimum data loss and downtime for Digital Planet.

It is terrific to see one of our leading HPE partners include HPE GreenLake and deploy it in their own private cloud environment at the same time, said Ray McGann, Ireland managing director atHPE. With this modernisation, eir evo will have a highly flexible cloud platform that enables them to scale as they grow.

This, together with a fixed pricing model, will allow the Digital Planet team to match their costs to revenue, providing improved predictability, visibility, and control, while investing more in the continued development of new solutions and services for their customers.

LastPass Breaches Cast Doubt on Password Manager Safety – Security Intelligence

In 2022, LastPass suffered a string of security breaches which sparked concern among cyber professionals and those impacted by the intrusions. Some called into question the way LastPass handled and responded to the incident. In addition, the situation ignited a wider conversation about the risks linked to utilizing password managers.

A password manager helps users generate strong passwords and safeguards them within a digital locker. A master password secures all data, which enables users to conveniently access all their passwords for other accounts. Password managers even remind you to renew your passwords periodically. For years, security experts have recommended the use of password managers.

Now, in the wake of the LastPass breach, it might be worth revisiting this advice.

In late August of 2022, LastPass announced that hackers had gained entry to parts of the companys development environment through a compromised developer account. This breach gave the attacker access to parts of the LastPass source code and proprietary technical information. After this first breach, the company reassured its customers that they had contained the situation. Apparently, there was no sign that the attack had compromised customer data or the encrypted password vaults.

In September 2022, LastPass announced that it underwent a thorough investigation and forensic review of the breach with the help of incident response firm Mandiant. LastPass stated they discovered no additional indications of activity from the attacker. Also, the unauthorized access was restricted to its development system, which is physically separated from its production environment.

The situation took a turn for the worse at the end of November when LastPass CEO, Karim Toubba, disclosed that an unauthorized individual had obtained access to a third-party cloud storage device, compromising certain aspects of its customer information. Apparently, there was still no sign that customer data or passwords had been compromised. But just before Christmas, LastPass informed its users that hackers had indeed gained access to both encrypted customer information, including username, password and notes, as well as unencrypted data, such as the URLs of customers online accounts.

LastPass stated that the source code and technical information originally stolen in August were used to target another employee. This allowed the intruders to obtain credentials and keys. This gave them access and the ability to decrypt storage volumes within the companys cloud-based storage service. As a result, the intruders were able to exfiltrate customer vault data.

The breach puts LastPass customers login credentials at high risk. Only a users master password potentially protects their credentials, which LastPass does not store. But if attackers compromise the master password, they will be able to successfully decrypt login credentials for all accounts stored in the password manager.

In response to the breach, according to the December statement, LastPass has:

LastPass communicated to all its users that:

Other strong password practices, as per Microsoft, include:

Given the LastPass breaches, should companies abandon password managers? These days, nobody can say they are impervious to attack. Any company might get hacked at any time. However, some feel LastPass could have handled the incident in a more effective way.

Unfortunately, there is no 100% secure password management solution. For example, a device-based manager stores and manages passwords locally on the device. This would avoid the risk of a LastPass-like breach. But if your device is lost, corrupted or becomes inaccessible, you lose all your passwords as well. And the rapid rise of infostealer malware places any device-based password storage at risk.

Overall, experts still consider password managers to be good practice. They not only provide password security but also ease of use. With features like password change reminders, password generation tools and device syncing, password managers still have many advantages. And even passwordless solutions arent without their risks.

Cybersecurity experts generally consider cloud-based password managers to be safe and secure, as they typically use AES-256 encryption, which is very difficult to crack. Its important to choose a password manager that operates on a zero-knowledge principle, meaning the manager should not have access to your data. Also, its best to avoid accessing your password manager on public networks, as your data may be vulnerable to capture.

As no password solution is bulletproof, its important to implement other security strategies, such as multifactor authentication and least-privilege principles. Least privilege means a user that requests access to a resource receives only the minimum necessary rights. And privilege should be in effect for the shortest duration necessary. An advanced least-privilege security environment may have prevented the LastPass intruders from moving laterally. All shields up!

BT gets on Wavelength to bring 5G, cloud to mobile businesses – ComputerWeekly.com

One of the basic dynamics of business today, and in the future, is fast, secure data processing closer to where companies need it most, made possible through cloud edge services running on 5G and 4G networks. Aiming to exploit these possibilities, BT has announced a partnership with AWS to open up a new generation of internet of things (IoT) benefits for customers and their communities.

The effort is part of BTs investment in its existing mobile networksto enable 5G-connected infrastructure as a service via AWS Wavelength.

The work combines AWSs cloud expertise with BTs EE 5G and 4G infrastructure. The national mobile network with AWS Wavelength is designed to bring AWS to the network edge for more business and public sector customers across the UK.

AWS Wavelength embeds AWS compute and storage services in 5G and 4G networks, providing mobile edge computing infrastructure for ultra-low-latency applications.

Hosting services directly at the edge of EEs UK network is said to be able to reduce lag, as application traffic can reach application servers running in the AWS Wavelength Zone without leaving BTs network. This opens up mobile edge computing infrastructure for businesses to develop, deploy and scale mobile IoT applications over BTs existing 5G network securely.

The collaboration aims to enable high-speed, latency-sensitive and intensive 5G connectivity for BT customers looking to benefit from high-bandwidth IoT use cases in the field. This includes autonomous vehicles, cameras for policing and other public services to help protect communities, live media production for outside broadcast, smart industrial robots and use in community healthcare.

For example, the technology could support wearable cameras for paramedics and ambulance staff to assist patients and help remote clinicians decide on best-care pathways; cameras for police to provide instant replay and higher-grade footage; or frictionless retail, where shoppers can enter a store, pick up their products and walk out without the need to scan or queue.

The first step of the partnership will see the firms switching on a new AWS Wavelength Zone in Manchester, which will let eligible businesses and public sector organisations within a 100-kilometre radius including cities such as Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield and Blackpool have access to edge computing services. BTs ambition is to roll out AWS Wavelength to business customers across the UK more broadly in the coming years.

As we continue to build best-in-class 5G infrastructure for the UK, launching the AWS Wavelength service for our business and wholesale customers is a hugely important step on our journey bringing the power of the cloud to the [EE network], said BT Wholesale managing director Alex Tempest.

Its set to unlock use cases like IoT cameras to help first responders keep communities safe: a real-life example of using tech to connect for good. By building cloud edge services into our 5G and 4G EE network, we can accelerate innovation across industries, and bring fast, secure data processing closer to where our customers need it most. Ultimately, we want to give businesses and public sector organisations all the power of edge computing, wherever they are.

In February 2023, BTlaunched an IoT national roaming network offering a dedicated connectivity framework for businesses across the UK, allowing them to keep smart devices connected wherever they are, using both its own EE network and those of other comms providers.

Akash Network and Concordium Partner to Offer Decentralized … – StreetInsider.com

ZUG, Switzerland, March 23, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Concordium blockchain is proud to announce an exciting partnership with Akash Network, an open supercloud platform that makes scaling and accessing services around the world easier than ever by connecting users to infrastructure providers with excess computing resources.

The partnership between Concordium and Akash Network is an exciting opportunity for projects running on Concordium to access attractive and cost-effective cloud server spaces to run their dApps. By integrating with Akash Network, ecosystem participants will also be able to leverage decentralized cloud storage and computational power to run their Concordium node, and in doing so contribute to further decentralizing the blockchain.

Most of the internet's data lives on centralized networks at the behest of only three owners, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure, who currently account for over 60%of the cloud computing market.

Akash Network was born out of the need to correct this imbalance: it is a free, public, and purpose-built service on a mission to decentralize cloud infrastructure and give power back to the people. Its distributed peer-to-peer cloud marketplace is run by a network of globally distributed node operators providing tenant applications with cloud-grade server space at 85% lower prices than other systems.

Akash Network makes it possible to deploy applications in a secure and censorship-proof environment, with a layer one protocol using Proof-of-Stake consensus both to secure the network and to protect the user's identity. Additionally, removing single points of failure from one company makes Akash Network users more resilient to institutional attack vectors, and leverage from AWS, and other centralized cloud service providers.

Concordium is the only layer-1 decentralized blockchain with a built-in self-sovereign ID framework designed to have real-world utility and specifically benefit business applications. With fast transactions, true finalization and low FIAT pegged fees, it's the perfect solution for developers looking to build their dApps on a secure, high-scale, science-backed chain.

"With Concordium's nodes being able to be supported on Akash Network, Concordium's users have an alternative solution for their cloud needs to not only save costs but further decentralize their cloud infrastructure" says Boz Menzalji, COO at Akash Network.

Mikael Breinholst, Director of Product at Concordium, says"We are very pleased to invite Akash into the Concordium community. As a leader in the decentralized cloud space, this collaboration will surely be well received by the developer community for running nodes and easy deployment of apps. Not only will this save costs but also further decentralize their cloud infrastructure."
