Cloud technology is the future of businesses – Monitor

Tech experts believe local enterprises should opt for cloud technology to match the demands of the evolving business environment.

Cloud technology makes everything from apps to documents available on the Internet.

It is where most of our data, information and infrastructure are run by third parties in a way to offer us a service. A day to day example of cloud is; Google Drive which stores our data such as documents and photos.

Cloud provides on-demand access, via the Internet, to applications, servers, and data storage, networking capabilities, hosted to a remote data centre and managed by service providers.

Cloud computing technologies, according to Farouk Semambya, an information technology architect at MTN, allows enterprises to introduce new ways of working, and cost saving while eliminating the inefficiencies created by traditional automation.

All businesses need to be connected to the Internet because it is now a necessity. With the Internet, you access everything. Get out of the mindset of having physical meetings by using the available tools, Semambya says.

He made the remarks last Tuesday during a roundtable discussion held by Liquid Intelligent Technologies and The Innovation Village under the theme, What Next: Technologys response through cloud and cybersecurity?

Enterprises that embrace cloud computing services have the capability of lowering the cost of doing business as regards to IT costs especially at a time when startups are rising out of the distress caused by the pandemic.

Grace Kamulegeya, a software solutions consultant at Makerere University, says start ups need to associate with cloud to manage cash flow.

The biggest challenges startups face is capital and for them to grow, they need to make sure the cash flow is there and can be managed, she says.

One of the solutions is to have some of their innovations being hosted around the cloud environment, she notes.

Almost two-thirds, or 65 percent of spending on application and infrastructure software will be directed toward cloud technologies by 2025, which is an increase from 58 percent in 2022, according to a report by Gartner Inc.

This is a clear indication that businesses are quickly moving to cloud computing and failure to adopt increases the business risk of becoming obsolete.

Dennis Keko Kahindi, chief executive at Liquid Intelligent Technologies, explains that the discussion explored major changes within the cloud economy and demystified factors driving todays private cloud valuations, the new cloud frameworks, and emerging strategies to help entrepreneurs measure growth and drive go-to-market momentum.

Although Africa accounts for only 1 per cent of the global public cloud market, the market continues to grow exponentially and has doubled in the past three years.

The technology sector in Uganda continues to rapidly grow, with ongoing expansion and improvement of data infrastructure a crucial aspect in pushing the country towards economic growth.

As Uganda and the rest of Africa look towards economic recovery and growth, Kahindi says cloud is the answer to cutting costs and increasing efficiencies as businesses move away from the requirement of hardware and installation.

This is a must in the new era where office-bound working is becoming less of a priority and, in some instances, obsolete altogether, he says.

To enhance our value proposition on technology development, we have partnered with entities like Microsoft through the Go-Cloud initiative to raise awareness, adoption and usage of Azure Cloud across Africa. This programme provides connectivity and cloud-based services tailored to start-ups at different gestation stages, enabling them to grow and scale their businesses, Kahindi added.

Even as enterprises integrate these technologies within their operations, challenges including a poor mindset towards adoption as well as the technical deficit to deploy applications on the cloud, stand in the way.

But an even more concerning issue at the back of all peoples minds is the security of data shared over the cloud.

The question to ask is how prepared the economy is to address challenges of cybersecurity arising from the growing number of hackers, increasing malware attacks and thriving black market for stolen data.

Cyber space has become very competitive but a risky place for organisations who are losing lots of data, information and money to cybercrime.

Duncan-Allan Byamukama, IT Systems & Networks Supervisor at The Innovation Village, says cyber security is very important given that most company work is done via the Internet and awareness of the risks involved is a good place to start.

Cloud allows entrepreneurs to expand their business portfolio and information infrastructure. So, as we aggressively take on digital technologies, let us develop the local tech talent to ensure that they provide customised software skills to manage the cyber-attacks, he shares. He notes that digital infrastructure will foster growth of digital technology.

Exclusive: iDrive Photos adds 1TB of PC or Mac storage to its unlimited mobile plan still just $9.99 a year! – Laptop Mag

iDrive Photos was launched last June by the iDrive team as an affordable and unlimited mobile photo and video storage solution at just $9.99 per year. You may recall that this is when Google Photos brought an end to its free unlimited backup plan, which caused many to scramble for an alternative solution.

iDrive Photos immediately jumped into the discussion for the best mobile backup solutions and tomorrow the company is announcing that iDrive Photos will now include 1TB of cloud storage for Mac or PC for the same $9.99 a year, or just 99 cents for the first year.

It's hard to overstate what an amazing deal this is compared to the rest of the cloud storage landscape, but here's a quick look at some of its competitors' offerings. Google and Amazon's lowest cloud storage tiers are $19.99 a year, which gets you 100GB of storage. That's double the price for 1/10th of what you are getting with iDrive Photos and that's if you don't include the unlimited backup of mobile photos and videos.

Apple's iCloud pricing starts at 99 cents a month, but that's for a paltry 50GB of storage, it bumps up to $2.99 a month for 200GB, which is less storage than the mid-tier iPhone 13. If you want an apples-to-apples comparison in terms of unlimited mobile photo and video storage, Flickr Pro is $60 per year.

I could go on with more, but I think that makes the point clear, iDrive Photos is by far the most affordable cloud storage solution and it doesn't stop with the storage space.

iDrive Photos also gives you the ability to easily share your photos or videos from the app, it gives you a Timeline View to quickly scan through for a specific event, auto-upload ensures your photos and videos are always backed up in case anything happens to your phone and your favorites album lets you gather all of your most cherished photos and videos in one spot.

iDrive Photos was already my go-to recommendation for prolific mobile photographers and videographers. But the addition of 1TB of general-purpose cloud storage for your PC or Mac while maintaining that $9.99 per year price point makes it the best cloud storage solution for most users.

iDrive will announce the change tomorrow and existing subscribers will automatically get the 1TB of PC or Mac storage added to their plan. So if you've been looking for a cloud storage solution you don't have to wait, check it out today.

Cloud computing spending is growing again and there’s more to come – ZDNet

Businesses around the world spent $21.1 billion on cloud infrastructure services in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2021, signaling a rebound in spending on cloud storage and compute power.

Spending on cloud infrastructure was up 13.5% in the quarter year on year to $21.1 billion, according to tech research firm, IDC.

The previous quarter saw spending on cloud infrastructure reach $18.6 billion after a remarkable year-on-year decline of 1.9% in Q2 2021, which was the first time in seven quarters that spending on cloud decreased.

Cloud spending rose as businesses and governments across the world embarked on major digital transformation projects over the last two years. The big winners are the big three cloud players: Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud, and Microsoft with Azure and its other cloud services, like Office 365.

"This marked the second consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth as supply chain constraints have depleted vendor inventories over the past several quarters. As backlogs continue to grow, pent-up demand bodes well for future growth as long as the economy stays healthy, and supply catches up to demand," IDC said of Q4 2021.

Over the whole of 2021, spending on cloud was 8.8% higher than in 2020, reaching a total of $73.9 billion for the year.

Enterprise spending on traditional IT grew too, but not as fast as cloud spending. Enterprise invested in non-cloud infrastructure to the tune of $17.2 billion, up 1.5% year on year in 4Q21, according to IDC. It marks the fourth consecutive quarter of growth on traditional IT spending, which grew 4.2% over 2020 to $59.6 billion for the year.

Cloud giants are trying to gain an edge on each other in all sorts of ways. Last week a Google Cloud survey argued that government workers were worried thatreliance on Microsoft's products was undermining the government's cybersecurity: Microsoft didn't agree.

IDC forecasts that firms will spend $90.0 billion cloud infrastructure in 2022, up 21.7% compared to 2021. The biggest loser is traditional IT spends for organizations that maintain their own infrastructure. CIO spending on non-cloud infrastructure is to decline 0.3% to $59.4 billion.

However, IDC reckons that spending on shared cloud infrastructure spending will grow 25.5% year over year to $64.5 billion for 2022, while spending on dedicated cloud infrastructure is expected to grow 13.1% to $25.4 billion in 2022.

How to sync files and folders to OneDrive – Digital Trends

Microsoft's OneDrive is an excellent cloud backup service that lets you synchronize your folders and files from your PC so it's all automatically backed up and readily available. You'll need to set it up to make the most of it, though. This guide will show you how to sync files and folders to OneDrive.

After youve signed in to your OneDrive account, your File Explorer will now showcase OneDrive personal on the side alongside your other shortcuts, such as This PC. You will now be able to sync files and folders to that OneDrive account.

Step 1: Next, you'll copy and paste. For demonstration purposes, I will be syncing a file and a folder in my desktop to my OneDrive account.

If I drag and drop it in, it will remove the file or folders presence on my desktop. Simply copy and paste it in instead to avoid this scenario so you can have them available on both your desktop/hard drive and your Microsoft OneDrive account.

Step 2: Within File Explorer, click OneDrive personal. It should show the file and folder we added to it from step 1.

Now that weve added some files and folders to the OneDrive account, you can use the services settings to make sure everything is synchronized properly.

Step 1: Click Microsoft OneDrive in the taskbar. Click the Help & settings icon and then choose the Settings field.

Step 2: Click the Account tab and then select the Choose folders button.

Step 3: Click the files and folders you want synced to OneDrive. The folder and file I added to my OneDrive account from the previous section is shown as Work projects and Files not in a folder. Click OK.

Step 1: Click the Choose folders button within OneDrives Settings.

Step 2: Now select the Make all files available button. This will synchronize everything within your OneDrive folder to your Microsoft OneDrive account.

You need to be connected to the internet for Microsoft OneDrive to work. As it's a cloud service, it will need constant access to your Wi-Fi or hotspot to operate. One of the reasons OneDrive is not syncing properly could be because you've just started up your system. Wait until it finishes the signing-in process.

Hover over the Microsoft OneDrive icon to see its status (Signing in and Online). For older systems, it may take a while for OneDrive to connect to your Wi-Fi and sign in.

For more on OneDrive, check out our detailed breakdown of the cloud service and what it offers. If you're looking for information on the various ways to store files on OneDrive (such as using the platform's website interface instead of the Windows 10 application), then head over to our guide on that as well.

Alternatively, if you've yet to choose a cloud storage service, our best cloud storage services guide can help you pick one.

How to use Amazon Drive to backup photos and files from your Android phone – Android Central

When you think about Amazon, you probably assume the company primarily focuses on its online storefront and various smart home products. But there's a lot more that goes into the Amazon ecosystem, and that includes making sure that your files are backed up. The company actually has two different apps on the Play Store that you can use to keep all of your important files from being lost.

If you have an Amazon account, then you already have an Amazon Drive account, even if you didn't know it. By default, Amazon provides up to 5GB of free storage that you can use in conjunction with Amazon Drive and Photos. However, there are also additional options if you need more than the included storage, making this quite an impressive alternative to some of the best cloud storage solutions. If you're interested in test-driving this, here's how you can use Amazon Drive to backup your photos and files.

1. Open the Amazon Drive app on your phone.

2. Log into the app with your Amazon account information.

3. Tap the three vertical dots in the top right corner.

4. Tap Upload.

5. Select one of the following: Take a photo, Take a video, Files, or Add Photos and Videos.

6. When prompted, tap Allow to give Amazon Drive access to your files.

7. Select the files that you want to upload.

8. Tap the Upload button in the bottom right corner.

We recommend leaving the Amazon Drive app open while you're uploading files. Sometimes, Android can "kill" apps that are running in the background and you definitely wouldn't want that to happen in the middle of an upload.

Amazon Drive isn't the only cloud storage solution that Amazon has to offer, as there's an Amazon Photos app too. This is slightly different from the Drive app, as you won't be able to upload documents. But the added benefit is that you can sync the Amazon Photos app with your Fire TV or Echo and see a gallery of your pictures as opposed to the stock images Amazon provides.

1. Open the Amazon Photos app on your phone.

2. Log into the app with your Amazon account information.

3. Tap the OK button to get started.

4. When prompted, tap the Allow button to provide the app with access to your photos and videos.

5. In the bottom toolbar, tap the More button.

6. Tap Settings.

7. Select Auto-Save near the top of the page.

8. Tap the toggles next to Photos and Videos.

From this settings panel, you can also adjust different "when to back up" settings. These include things like only backing up when you're connected to a charger, and toggling whether you want to use cellular data to back items up instead of only relying on a Wi-Fi connection.

No matter what cloud storage solution you end up using, whether it's Amazon Drive or something else, we strongly recommend backing up your devices whenever possible. By doing so, you'll never have to worry about losing those precious pictures and videos of moments that you just won't get back.

There's also the added benefit of being able to access those backed up files from pretty much anywhere. This includes accessing and organizing your photos, videos, and other files from the web, or when you ultimately get a new phone.

If you have an Amazon account, then you already have access to Amazon Drive. This is an alternative cloud storage solution that syncs with your Amazon account and is accessible from pretty much anywhere.

The Best Way to Transfer OneDrive to Google Drive – Programming Insider

To sign up for our daily email newsletter, CLICK HERE Preface

With the development of cloud storage solutions, more and more users turn to cloud services to store their various data securely. Therere many advantages of saving files to cloud drives instead of traditional hard drives. For example, users can access their files on cloud services anywhere and anytime. Meanwhile, theres no need to worry about hardware failures and crashing.

Therere multiple cloud services in the market, such as Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, MEGA, Flickr, etc. Commonly, most users take advantage of different cloud solutions at the same time. For better data management, moving files from one cloud to another is inevitable. For instance, you might want to copy from OneDrive to Google Drive, sync Google Photos to Dropbox, etc.

But, how can you achieve it? This article shows you 2 useful methods that you can apply.

If you are new to cloud storage services, each cloud solution offers a different free storage limit. Specifically speaking, Google Drive provides users with 15GB of free storage space, OneDrive offers 5GB, and Dropbox offers 2GB. As you can see, you will run out of your OneDrive free storage limit if you dont plan to upgrade your OneDrive account.

In this case, you need to migrate files from OneDrive to Google Drive or any other cloud services and then free up the OneDrive space so that you can keep using that cloud drive for free. Furthermore, Google Drive enables you to create and share documents in a hassle-free way, which is extremely useful for team collaboration.

Also, therere other situations where you might delete the former account and sign up for a new one. So, before deleting, transferring precious data from the older one to the new one is very important for data security.

If you have a large number of files to migrate from one cloud to another, then looking for an efficient method is of great importance. Now, you can read further to find out what should you do to deliver that goal.

The download-and-upload method is the easiest and commonest way for most users to move files from one cloud to another. Although this method requires a lot of your time and asks you to shift accounts frequently, it matters. If you want to apply this solution to migrate files from OneDrive to Google Drive, you can first sign in to your OneDrive on the web, download the files you want to move, and then upload them to your Google Drive account.

However, the download-and-upload method is not that efficient when you have a large number of files to migrate. Meanwhile, you have to pay attention to the Internet connection during the process. If you are tired of the troublesome download-and-upload process, you can take advantage of a professional cloud file manager MultCloud.

MultCloud offers you an integrated platform to manage multiple cloud storage solutions efficiently. Currently, it supports more than 30 cloud services in the market, such as Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Flickr, MEGA, Amazon S3, etc. With this service, you dont need to manually download files from one cloud and upload them to another. Whereas you can migrate files across clouds directly.

If you havent used MultCloud before, this web-based service is easy to get started. Offering you a simple and plain interface, MultCloud displays its advanced features on the left navigation bar. You not only can transfer files across clouds, but also sync and backup files from cloud to cloud directly and seamlessly.

All you need to do is to add OneDrive and Google Drive to MultCloud and grant MultCloud access. Then you can head to Cloud Transfer, select OneDrive as the source directory and Google Drive as the target directory. After that, you can press the Transfer Now tab to start the task.

MultCloud can complete the transfer task as quickly as possible since it offers a leading transmission speed. Thus, if you have a large number of data to transfer between clouds, MultCloud can make it easily and quickly. Meanwhile, MultCloud is based on data traffic to migrate files across clouds. So, it can continue the transfer task in the background even though your computer shuts down suddenly.

Anyway, MultCloud is your one-stop shop when you want to manage your cloud services in only one place. Its efficient, secure, and feature-rich. If you are interested, you can now visit the official website of MultCloud and have a try!

Update. Additional HYCU views added. 5 April 2022.

HYCU presented its update to a March IT Press Tour in Tel Aviv, reminding attendees it began its life providing Nutanix-focussed backup, then added VMware, and subsequently added the Google, Azure and AWS public clouds in that order, with an agentless backup-as-a-service offering. Office 365 was supported in February last year, and Kubernetes-orchestrated cloud-native workloads in April.

Subbiah Sundaram, VP of product for HYCU, told attendees: We integrate with Isilons native API, not using NDMP, whose use impacts production systems. Ours does not.

Thats because NDMP uses host server CPU and memory resources whereas HYCUs agentless backup does not. HYCUs Protg software can backup Isilon and PowerScale systems to on-premises Data Domain and ECS targets but also to the three top public clouds. In this way it can aid a customers migration to the cloud.

When it was mentioned that Druva can also backup source systems to the public cloud, and Dell has a tie-up with Druva, HYCU SBP sales Justin Endres said that Druva was AWS-specific and customers would prefer multi-cloud support. He also suggested that Dell-Druva deal was done in haste and Dell might be looking to widen its SaaS backup supplier relationship so as to gain multi-cloud target support.

Endres also said that Isilon/PowerScale customers moved to HYCU because relying on replica copy-based rather than backup-based protection didnt scale well or extend easily to the public cloud. HYCU fulfils both requirements. Also Isilon customers came to HYCU because extending their legacy backup to the cloud was hard and HYCU made it easier. Commvault and Veritas were singled out in this regard, with Sundaram saying Commvaults Metallic does not protect Isilon.

Other features in the March update were:

Asked if HYCU offered dedupe in the cloud, Sundaram said: We dont do dedupe in the cloud. It requires compute there and compute is expensive while storage and networking are cheaper. We only ship unique blocks to the cloud with a first fill backup and only unique blocks from incremental changes. This is marketed as Cloud Smart with savings in backup storage capacity and faster recovery than restoration from a deduplicated backup store in the cloud. In effect HYCU gets dedupe done on the source system.

In the future HYCU could introduce data protection plus security with integration of its software with the native security management of the source platform so it could work with the identity management features there.

HYCU has an R-Score ransomware attack readiness score with a 0 to 1,000 rating and offers it as a free service to customers. It was created with help from Mandiant and, so far, it has been used more than 50,000 times.

Its enabling its partners to offer this as a service with partners billing customers for its use. HYCU says this gives its partners something to compete against Google with its acquired Mandiant offering.

A HYCU spokesperson told us: These new services for us are just a small but hopefully meaningful way in which our partners can add ransomware assessment to their ongoing practice areas especially for those in that have security service and practice areas. I honestly dont think any of us would ever think those capabilities for midsize enterprise-focused MSPs/MSSPs and CSPs would ever run up against the breadth and depth of what Mandiant currently offers and may offer now that theyre a part of Google. We still work with the Mandiant execs and engineers to fine tune R-Score that we introduced with them last August as well.

Why Do SMBs Need the Cloud – About Manchester

Cloud solutions have become practically part of the infrastructure of many companies. Firms have already assessed their benefits: high performance, easy scalability, and most importantly significant cost savings. The cloud is most often chosen by small and medium-sized businesses that cannot afford to build their own infrastructure. Therefore, as an alternative, he uses cloud technology. Lets find out if this solution is really necessary for companies and what benefits it has.

The use of physical IT infrastructure is still the classic scheme for many companies. Organizations prefer to work the old-fashioned way because they are afraid of Kubernetes migration.

However, in todays reality, this solution is difficult to call successful, because it has a number of obvious drawbacks. For example:

That is, in fact, each computer becomes an object that requires constant investment. And its good if the office is small, which means that it doesnt have many jobs. But medium-sized companies have trouble in this situation since the required budget for the maintenance and service of machines is many times greater.

It is possible to avoid such problems if you start using the cloud for at least part of your business processes. And the sooner the firm realizes this, the more money it will be able to save.

Cloud solutions for business allow for optimization of data storage and data exchange between employees. In this case, a company acquires new opportunities:

So, there are really many advantages of such a solution. However, many companies still postpone the adoption of cloud technology because business leaders have preconceptions about the use of the cloud. The main fear is related to data storage. In the early stages of development, cloud technology was not highly secure, so data leaks were not uncommon. Since then, however, there has been a major upgrade, and todays cloud services are suitable even for the storage of sensitive information. For example, many banks and financial institutions have already switched to the cloud and use it to process large amounts of data.

Many owners of small and medium-sized businesses do not fully understand why they should use the cloud and what the difference between it and the physical IT infrastructure is. Its important to understand that cloud services can often offer a unique set of tools and applications that are simply not available on physical hardware.

When arguing in favor of the cloud, there is another important factor to consider rapid scalability. This factor is critical for small and medium-sized businesses related to e-commerce. For example, in peaks of user activity, there is a risk that the site will not cope with the load, and thus the company will incur heavy losses. With the cloud, it is possible to increase or decrease the performance of the infrastructure at any time, thereby preventing the crash of the site.

Many small and medium-sized companies who decide to optimize their IT infrastructure are afraid of the difficulties of moving to a cloud service. However, more often than not, these fears are unfounded. Most providers offer a seamless migration service that allows you to migrate from a physical server to a cloud server without interrupting current business processes. This service is suitable for high-loaded sites.

Also, it is not necessary to migrate the entire company to the cloud right away most often, organizations try a new solution on a few employees or one department to make a decision on further complete migration.
