An introduction to Alibaba cloud offerings – TechTarget

When choosing between cloud providers, most U.S.-based enterprises and cloud developers primarily lean toward AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. While the Big Three providers dominate the cloud market, the fourth largest -- China-based Alibaba Cloud -- is also worth noting for its breadth of cloud services and expanding global availability.

Similar to the emergence of AWS from Amazon, Alibaba Cloud is a product of the Alibaba Group, a Chinese e-commerce giant.

Alibaba Cloud currently operates in 21 data center regions and 63 global availability zones. It is primarily focused on areas in mainland China and other Asia-Pacific regions, but there are also two regions in the U.S. and two in the European Union.

In terms of its place in the public cloud market, Alibaba Cloud is the biggest public cloud in China, and it's still growing rapidly, said Rachel Liu, senior research manager at IDC China's Enterprise Research Group. Alibaba's cloud revenue grew 59% year-over-year in the second quarter of 2020, according to its latest quarterly report.

Along with the other top providers, Alibaba Cloud offers various cloud infrastructure and application development services. Alibaba follows the standard usage-based, pay-as-you-go pricing model that the majority of providers have adopted.

"In terms of the product type and quantity, I think Alibaba has caught up with the top three cloud providers, which can provide over 200 products in the China market," Liu said. "Alibaba has a rich infrastructure portfolio, which includes computing, network, storage, security and hybrid cloud solutions."

Elastic Compute Service (ECS). This is the platform's core IaaS offering for scalable compute capacity. Developers use ECS to deploy virtual servers -- called instances -- within their Alibaba cloud environments. ECS instances deliver the computing requirements -- such as CPU, memory and network bandwidth -- necessary to run and manage applications. IT teams can choose from various ECS instance types and change them depending on workload needs.

ECS Bare Metal Instance. This Alibaba computing service combines the features of VMs and physical machines. ECS Bare Metal Instance provides the elasticity and scalability of VMs with the performance and isolation of physical servers. This service supports standard ECS instances and nested virtualization. ECS Bare Metal Instance is a good fit for an application that requires non-virtualized environments and strong resource isolation.

Container Service for Kubernetes (ACK). Alibaba's container management service provides a runtime-environment for Kubernetes-based container applications. Developers create and deploy Kubernetes clusters in ACK, which integrates with Alibaba Cloud services for virtualization, storage and security. In addition to ACK, Alibaba's other container offerings are Container Registry, a platform for containerized image hosting, and Elastic Container Instance, for serverless container instances.

Function Compute. IT teams use this serverless platform so they can focus on code development instead of server management. This event-driven computing service supports synchronous and asynchronous calls to trigger functions. Users can select pay-as-you-go or lower-cost subscription pricing, or use a combination of both. Function Compute has notable service limitations -- i.e., no more than 50 functions can be created under a single service and no more than 10 triggers can be created under a single function.

Object Storage Service (OSS). This service stores high volumes of data in the cloud. Enterprises can store any type of unstructured data in OSS, such as image, audio and video files for applications and websites. OSS hosted data is encrypted and highly available. Objects are stored in buckets, which administrators can configure to meet requirements based on region, access controls and storage class. Alibaba offers four OSS storage classes: Standard, Infrequent Access (IA), Archive and Cold Archive. The Standard class is highly available and reliable for frequent data access. IA, Archive and Cold Archive are lower cost storage tiers for data that requires less frequent access.

Apsara File Storage NAS. This service provides network attached file storage (NAS) for ECS instances, Elastic High-Performance Computing instances and Container Service for Kubernetes nodes. File Storage NAS provides a distributed file system with maximum capacity of up to 10 PB that automatically scales when files are added or removed. This service encrypts data at rest -- as well as in transit -- and offers shared access, high throughput, data replication and backup. Users can access data from this NAS storage service via standard file access protocols.

Elastic Block Storage. Alibaba provides block storage devices for ECS instances with this service. Elastic Block Storage offers cloud block storage disks based on Alibaba cloud architecture and local disks. Local block storage disks are physical devices attached to physical machines that host ECS instances. Elastic Block Storage devices feature low-latency storage, random read-write capabilities and data persistence.

ApsaraDB for PolarDB. This relational database service is compatible with MySQL, PostgreSQL and Oracle syntaxes. PolarDB has 100 TB maximum storage capacity. PolarDB decouples compute and storage resources. This relational database features low-latency physical replication, data backup and disaster recovery. Alibaba also offers PolarDB stacks, a database appliance designed for on-premises database management.

ApsaraDB for MongoDB. This NoSQL database is based on the open source MongoDB protocol. ApsaraDB for MongoDB is a document database that features automatic monitoring and scalability. Architecture configurations for this database service include standalone instances, replica set instances and sharded cluster instances.

LedgerDB. The platform's ledger database offers data auditing capabilities and uses blockchain database technology. This database service is useful for keeping data records and executing data tracing tasks. LedgerDB can perform 300,000 transactions per second on a single ledger for a single client.

Virtual Private Cloud (VPC). IT teams create a private, isolated network dedicated to their cloud accounts with this VPC service. Developers can customize their VPCs to meet their cloud network requirements by defining the IP address range, route tables and network gateways. VPCs can connect to other VPCs or on-premises data centers.

Server Load Balancer. Alibaba's Server Load Balancer distributes inbound traffic across multiple ECS instances. The service virtualizes these ECS instances into back-end servers using virtual IP addresses, which helps avoid the risks of a single point of failure and improves availability. This service enables fast response times to traffic spikes.

Alibaba Cloud DNS. This domain name system (DNS) service translates domain names into machine-readable IP addresses. Alibaba Cloud DNS routes user queries to websites and application servers. It can handle millions of DNS queries per second and comes with security features to protect against DNS attacks.

Alibaba Cloud PrivateZone. This service provides a private domain name management system based on specified VPCs. IT teams use PrivateZone to resolve IP addresses and manage resources. With this service, the domain names cannot be accessed over the internet or any other resource besides the specified VPCs.

TikTok won’t be banned from US app stores. Here’s why. – News@Northeastern

Anyone scrolling through TikTok can see that the widely popular video-sharing app is, at the very least, incredibly entertaining. Addicting? Maybe. A questionable use of time? Perhaps.

But is it an enormous threat to national security as the Trump administration claims in its proposal to ban the app in the United States? Not likely, says David Choffnes, associate professor of computer sciences.

For the average American user, the Chinese-owned TikTok app doesnt pose a national security threat any more than our beloved Facebook or Twitter, he says.

There are some risks for sure, Choffnes says. TikTok could be collecting your location data, and they could potentially be forced to hand that information over to the Chinese government, even if they dont want to.

But unless you are, for example, a member of the military using TikTok on a classified base, then the stakes of the Chinese government knowing your location via TikTok are very low.

The ban on new downloads of TikTok, which was supposed to go into effect on Sunday, has been postponed until Sept. 27, a date that will likely be extended unless, in the meantime, TikToks parent company, ByteDance, can negotiate a deal with an American company to host the apps data in the U.S.

As of Wednesday, Oracle and Walmart were working on a partnership with ByteDance to create a spinoff company, TikTok Global.

Oracle would hold a 12.5 percent stake in the new company and serve as the cloud hosting provider for the new entity. Walmart would hold a 7.5 percent stake in the company, with ByteDance owning the remaining 80 percent.

TikTok will most likely not be taken out of app stores in the U.S. because the companies that would be affected, such as Apple and Google, would either compromise with the U.S. government or challenge it in court.

A company like ByteDance could, hypothetically, inject code into TikTok that could prove harmful to U.S. national security.

The app stores do reviews to look for that kind of malicious code, Choffnes says. They cant catch everything. But generally speaking, its hard to mount such an attack without detection, especially in an app as popular and closely monitored as TikTok.

Plus, even if new downloads of the app were banned in the U.S., in most cases, no one except the user themselves can uninstall the app from their phone if they already have it. This makes things complicated for network providerswould these companies be breaking the law for allowing users to access the app if they already have it?

Its one thing to take it out of the app store. But when I start seeing network-level controls, thats the opposite of an open internet, Choffnes says. Its a slippery slope that takes us down a path other countries have taken that we prefer not to be compared to, like widespread censorship in China.

He adds that the deal, which is still being disputed, seems more like a political move by the Trump administration than an attempt to protect people in the U.S. from a national security threat.

It also isnt an attempt to protect individuals privacy. In this proposal, the argument isnt being made for consumer protection where we actually see the greatest risk, he says. And TikTok is only a small piece of a much larger problem when it comes to consumer protection.

The Chinese government doesnt need TikTok to figure out that Im at home right now, he says. They can just buy that data from a data broker. Thats how much information is already out there.

This kind of thing is pretty scary as someone who works on privacy and consumer protection, and also net neutrality and internet freedom, Choffnes says. Theres a whole lot of wrong here.

ARMONK, N.Y.,Sept. 28, 2020 Call for Code Founding Partner IBM (NYSE:IBM) and Creator David Clark Cause today announced the top five worldwide finalists for the 2020 Call for Code Global Challenge.Call for Codeunites hundreds of thousands of developers to create and deploy applications powered by open source technology that can tackle some of the worlds biggest challenges. This year, developers around the globe were asked to create solutions to help communities fight back against climate change and COVID-19.

Now in its third year, the Call for Code global competition has generated more than fifteen thousand solutions built using a combination of open source-powered products and technologies, including Red Hat OpenShift, IBM Cloud, IBM Watson, IBM Blockchain, data from The Weather Company, and APIs from ecosystem partners like HERE Technologies and IntelePeer. Since its launch in 2018, this movement has grown to more than 400,000 developers and problem solvers across 179 nations, reflecting the reality that challenges like climate change and COVID-19 demand solutions that work on the local level, but also have the ability to scale and help any community, anywhere.

For the third year in a row, the developer community has answered the Call for Code in overwhelming numbers, creating extraordinary solutions powered by open source technology. Call for Code Global Top Five

These five finalists were chosen from an elite group of top solutions from each region of the world:

Each year, the Call for Code Global Prize winner receives$200,000and hands-on support from IBM, The Linux Foundation, and other partners to expand the open source community around their solution and to deploy their solution in areas of need. This years grand prize winner will be selected by an elite group of judges, including some of the mosteminent leadersin human rights, disaster risk reduction, business, and technology.

Path to Deployment

The IBM Service Corps and technical experts helped incubate and deploy the previous two Global Challenge winning solutions. Last years Call for Code Global Challenge winning team,Prometeo, created a wearable device that measures carbon monoxide, smoke concentration, humidity, and temperature to monitor firefighter safety in real-time as well as to help improve their health outcomes in the long-term. The solution was incubated and completed its first wildfire field test earlier this year during a controlled burn with the Grups de Refor dActuacions Forestals (GRAF) and the Grup dEmergncies Mdiques (GEM) dels Bombers de la Generalitat de Catalunya nearBarcelona, Spain. Prometeo was developed by a team comprising a veteran firefighter, an emergency medical nurse, and three developers.

Project Owl, the winning solution from Call for Code 2018, provides an offline communication infrastructure that gives first responders a simple interface for managing all aspects of a disaster. The physical clusterduck network is made of hubs that create a mesh network that can send speech-based communications using conversational systems to a central application. Together with the IBM Service Corps, Project Owl has been piloted acrossPuerto Rico, focusing on areas that were hit hard by hurricanes.

Both projects, as well asothers, continue to be incubated through the Call for Code deployment pipeline.

Call for Code University Edition

This year, IBM partnered with the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) to launch a dedicated University Edition within Call for Code. Together, IBM and CGI U reached more than 53,000 students around the world to help create solutions to fight COVID-19 and climate change. The 2020 Call for Code Challenge University finalists are:Kairos App(Latin America);Lupe(Europe);Pandemap(Asia Pacific);Plant-it(North America); andRechargd(Asia Pacific). Solutions in the University Edition are competing for a grand prize of$10,000. The grand prize-winning team and runner-up will also receive the opportunity to interview for a potential role at IBM.

Jodi Picoults The Book of Two Ways follows Dawn Edelstein, a death doula with a physicist husband and a teenage daughter. Dawns job is to help terminally ill patients and their loved ones transition from life to death.

But before she was a death doula, she was a graduate student living in Egypt, studying archeology and in love with a fellow graduate student named Wyatt.

When Dawn is in a plane crash, she finds not the life she lives flashing before her eyes, but rather the life she once had with Wyatt 15 years earlier.

After miraculously surviving the crash, Dawn must consider whether to return home to her family or travel to Egypt, find Wyatt and discover the life that could have been and maybe could be.

What unfolds are two side-by-side stories of where each of Dawns choices lead her.

The Book of Two Ways is a thrilling adventure, but the many timelines woven through the novel can be a bit difficult to follow. With Picoults stories, there is always something new to learn, and The Book of Two Ways is no exception. The characters interests in ancient Egypt, quantum physics, death, and more bring a certain dynamism to the story, but at times, can also get a bit dense.

Nevertheless, Picoult has certainly crafted a fun and interesting read, one that will lead readers to both learn a lot and also ask themselves key questions about how to create happy lives for themselves during the short time we have on earth.
