FBIs Wray reveals scope of ransomware investigations – POLITICO

The comments from the FBI director come after the White House said on Tuesday that the latest high-profile ransomware attack perpetrated against JBS USA, a unit of the worlds largest meat processing company originated from a criminal organization likely based in Russia.

Just weeks earlier, a ransomware attack targeting the 5,500-mile-long Colonial Pipeline resulted in the crucial oil supplier temporarily shutting down, disrupting the East Coasts gasoline supply and contributing to widespread fuel shortages.

The spate of cyberattacks has prompted new deliberations among congressional lawmakers over whether to force companies that have been compromised by ransomware to tell the government they have been hacked.

As a result of the Colonial breach, the Transportation Security Administration has already put forth a directive compelling businesses that operate pipelines to report whenever they suffer cyberattacks.

President Joe Biden also issued an executive order last month aimed at overhauling the U.S. governments approach to cybersecurity. The order required federal agencies to encrypt their data, update plans for securely using cloud hosting services and enable multi-factor authentication, among other measures.

The White House said on Wednesday that Biden will raise the issue of ransomware attacks during his upcoming face-to-face summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, set to take place on June 16 in Geneva, Switzerland.
