Predicting the future is hard and risky. Predicting the future in the computing industry is even harder and riskier due to dramatic changes in technology and limitless challenges to innovation. Only a small fraction of innovations truly disrupt the state of the art. Some are not practical or cost-effective, some are ahead of their time, and some simply do not have a market. In 2014, a team of technical leaders from the IEEE Computer Society joined forces to write a technical report, entitled IEEE CS 2022, surveying 23 technologies that could potentially change the landscape of computer science and industry by the year 2022. In particular, this report focused on 3D printing, big data and analytics, the open intellectual property movement, massively online open courses, security cross-cutting issues, universal memory, 3D integrated circuits, photonics, cloud computing, computational biology and bioinformatics, device and nanotechnology, sustainability, high-performance computing, the Internet of Things, life sciences, machine learning and intelligent systems, natural user interfaces, networking and inter-connectivity, quantum computing, software-defined networks, multicore, and robotics for medical care.

The 2022 Report team surveyed several thousand IEEE members about the forces behind the technology changes. The desire for sustainable energy, the availability of wireless/broadband connectivity, and the use of technology for medical procedures ranked highest as drivers, while 3D printing, the use of robots for labour, and cloud computing were ranked most highly as major disruptors.

Computing devices from wearable devices and chips embedded under the skin to the computers inside our mobile devices, laptops, desktops, home servers, TV sets, and refrigerators, to the computing cloud that we reach via the Internet will together form an intelligent mesh, a computing and communication ecosystem that augments reality with information and intelligence gathered from our fingertips, eyes, ears, and other senses, and even directly interfaced to our brain waves.

At the heart of this revolution is seamless networking, with transparent and uninterrupted transitions between devices made possible by Near-Field Communication, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi, as well as intelligent coordination software, standardized identity technologies, and cloud-based APIs.

The combination of powerful voice and facial recognition, massive identity databases, and powerful tracking will likely result in a new norm that potentially translates into a significant loss of privacy compared to today.

Reading file from Google Cloud Storage in Google Colab

In this short guide, we will go through the steps to import a simple text file from Google Cloud Storage (GCS) to Google Colab.

We must first authenticate ourselves to fetch resources from GCS:

This will open up a popup - log in with the same account that hosts the file on Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

Set the current GCP project to the one where your file resides on GCS:

I've never trusted cloud storage for archival.

The only place I'd trust is a professional service like Amazon Web Services S3 Storage. It's designed for companies that store petabytes of data, so it's not aimed at consumers, which is actually a good thing for people who have massive amounts of data. The best part is you only pay for what you need per GB, so there's no flat fee just to have an account.

You could use two of their different tiers based on what you described:

If you stored 20TB of data at their S3 Glacier - Instant Retrieval tier which allows millisecond access to files, it's $0.004/GB, so $81.92 per month.

If you wanted to squeeze every last penny out and weren't concerned about how long it took to retrieve the files, as long as they were stored safely, you could use the S3 Glacier - Deep Archive tier which allows access to files within 12 hours of submitting a request. It's $0.00099/GB, so $20.28 per month for the 20TB.

Hopefully that helps, not sure if you've ever looked into AWS S3 but they have outstanding options and different types of storage tiers for all sorts of needs. You could also mix and match files in your 20TB arrangement depending on if you have some that you access frequently and others that just need to sit somewhere.

File, block and object: Storage fundamentals in the cloud era – ComputerWeekly.com

Despite the many changes in data storage over the decades, some fundamentals remain. One of these is that storage is accessed by one of three methods block, file and object.

This article will define and expand on the characteristics of these three, while also looking at the on-prem and cloud products you will typically find that use file, block and object storage.

What we see is that while on-prem (usually) hardware form factor block, file and object storage products are available, these types of access to storage are also offered in the cloud to serve the workloads there that require them.

The rise of the cloud has also led to hybrid datacentre and cloud and distributed forms of file and object storage.

So, although file, object and block are long-running fundamentals of storage, the ways they are being deployed in the cloud era are changing.

The file system has always been a mainstay of storage technology. Block and file access storage offer two ways to interact with the file system.

File access storage is when you access entire files via the file system. Usually that is via network-attached storage (NAS) or a linked grid ofscale-out NAS nodes. Such products come with their own file system on board and storage is presented to applications and users in the drive letter format.

In block access, the storage product usually deployed on-prem in storage-area network (SAN) systems, for example only addresses blocks of storage within files, databases, etc. In other words, the file system that applications talk through resides higher in the stack.

File systems give all sorts of advantages. Among the most prominent is that this is how most enterprise applications are written and that wont go away too soon.

A key characteristic of file system-based methods is that there are methods such as those found within the Posix command set to lock files to ensure they cannot be simultaneously over-written, at least not in ways that corrupt the file or the processes around it.

File storage accesses entire files, so it gets used for general file storage, as well as more specialised workloads that require file access, such as in media and entertainment. And, in its scale-out NAS form, it is a mainstay of large-scale repositories for analytics and high-performance computing (HPC) workloads.

Block storage provides application access to the blocks that files comprise. This might bedatabase accesswhere many users work on the same file simultaneously and from possibly the same application email, enterprise applications such as enterprise resource planning (ERP), for example but with locking at the sub-file level.

Block storage has the great benefit of high performance, and not having to deal with metadata and file system information, etc.

File storage still exists in standalone NAS format, especially at the entry level, and scale-out NAS, intended for on-prem deployment, is commonplace.

But the advent of the cloud, and its tendency to globalise operations, has affected things has had a twofold effect.

On the one hand, there are a number of suppliers that offer global file systems that combine a file system distributed across public cloud and local network hardware, with all data in a single namespace. Providers here include Ctera, Nasuni, Panzura, Hammerspace and Peer Software.

On the other hand, all the key cloud providers Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure offer their own file access storage services, and also those of NetApp, in the case of AWS. IBM also offers file storage though its cloud offering.

Some storage suppliers, such as IBM and Pure, offer instances of their block storage in the cloud. And the big three all offer cloud block storage services, aimed at applications that require the lowest latency, such as databases and analytics caching, as well as virtual machine (VM) work.

Probably because of the nature of block storage and its performance requirements, no distributed block storage seems to have emerged in the way it has with file.

Object storage is based on a flat structure with access to objects via unique IDs, similar to the domain name system (DNS) method of accessing websites.

For that reason, object storage is quite unlike the hierarchical, tree-like file system structure, and that can be an advantage when datasets grow very large. Some NAS systems feel the strain when they get to billions of files.

Object storage accesses data at the equivalent of file level, but without file locking, and often more than one user can access the object at the same time. Object storage is not strongly consistent. In other words, it is eventually consistent between mirrored copies that exist.

Most legacy applications are not written for object storage. But far from that necessarily being a disadvantage, historically speaking, object storage is in fact the storage access method of choice for the cloud era. That is because the cloud is generally far more of a stateless proposition than the legacy enterprise environment, and also comprises probably the bulk of storage offered by the big cloud providers.

Also, objects in object storage offer a richer set of metadata than in a traditional file system. That makes data in object storage well-suited to analytics, too.

The cloud has been object storages natural home. Most storage services offered by cloud providers are based on object storage, and it is here that new de facto standards, such as S3, have emerged.

With its easy access to data that that can happily exist as largely stateless and eventually consistent, object is the bulk storage of the cloud era.

You can get object storage for on-prem deployment, such as Dell EMCs Elastic Cloud Storage, which is solely for datacentre deployment. Meanwhile, Hitachi Vantaras Hitachi Content Platform, IBMs Cloud Object Storage and NetApps StorageGrid can operate in hybrid- and multicloud scenarios.

Some specialist object storage suppliers, such as Cloudian and Scality, offer on-prem and hybrid deployments.

And in the case of Scality, along with Pure Storage (and NetApp, to an extent), converged file and object storage is possible, with the rationale here being that customers increasingly want to access large amounts of unstructured data that may be in file or object storage formats.

What’s driving the resurgence in tape storage use? – TechTarget

For well over a decade, IT vendors and experts alike have proclaimed tape to be dead. However, the rumors of tape's demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Tape storage technology is in the middle of a resurgence. This renaissance is the result of a number of factors, including improvements in the technology and its ability to protect against cyber attacks.

Even though tapes have stored data for almost as long as computers have existed, tape storage technology continues to improve.

For example, the LTO Program first released its standard in 2000. LTO-1 tape had a capacity of only 100 GB native, or 200 GB compressed.

In 2021, the LTO Program released the ninth generation of the LTO specification. LTO-9 tapes have a native capacity of 18 TB and can store up to 45 TB of compressed data. Additionally, a compressed tape features read speeds of up to 1000 MBps. Even an uncompressed tape has read speeds up to 400 MBps. This rate is far faster than the first-generation LTO tapes, which had a maximum speed of 20 MBps for an uncompressed tape or 40 MBps for a compressed tape. However, it's still much slower than the access times of disk and flash.

According to some estimates, the volume of data that most organizations have will double every few years. Conventional wisdom has long held that it is nearly impossible to keep pace with such rampant data growth. As such, many organizations have adopted strict data lifecycle management policies that will automatically delete aging data and drive down storage costs.

However, purging old data might mean that an organization can't capitalize on a long-term trend that it might have been able to spot had enough historical data existed. Organizations have found that they can use machine learning to unlock hidden business value in existing data.

Tape storage technology use may be an answer. Just as cloud providers use tape storage for archives, organizations can use the massive storage capacity offered by newer standards and migrate their infrequently accessed data to cheaper tapes.

Even though tapes have stored data for almost as long as computers have existed, tape storage technology continues to improve.

The constant threat of ransomware is a major reason for the recent popularity of tape storage use.

Early on, ransomware was simply designed to encrypt its victims' data. The easiest way to recover from a ransomware attack was to restore a backup. However, ransomware authors eventually figured out that backups were the one thing standing between them and the ransom. As such, cybercriminals began developing ransomware that could actively attack an organization's backups.

Tape storage technology is largely immune to these types of attacks. Tape can serve as an air-gapped data copy. In other words, an administrator can write data to a tape, eject the cartridge and store it in a safe place. Ransomware cannot attack data on a tape that is not mounted in a drive.

In addition, newer LTO standards feature write-once, read-many technology. It's possible to write to a tape so other users can't alter that data. In the context of ransomware, an attacker can't encrypt a tape's contents.

Some experts thought the public cloud would render tape obsolete and would ultimately be responsible for its death. Ironically, however, hyperscale cloud providers are among the biggest consumers of tape storage. In fact, many businesses that use cloud storage don't realize that the providers write some data to tape.

Cloud providers such as Microsoft and AWS offer various tiers of storage. The cheapest storage tier is usually an archive tier, which organizations use to store data that they rarely access but need to retain. These cloud providers can offer archive storage at such a low cost because they store the data on tape rather than on online spinning disks.

In spite of the resurgence in tape use, there are some shortcomings. First, tape is a linear media, which means that it isn't the best choice for workloads that perform random I/O. Tape tends to be fast when performing sequential reads and writes but can be slow when it needs to locate specific data.

Tape media can survive for decades, but in order to achieve this longevity, users need to store it in an area with the proper temperature and humidity levels. In addition, tape is removable, so administrators must ensure that security controls will prevent the theft of sensitive data.

HPE GreenLake spreads its storage wings Blocks and Files – Blocks and Files

HPE has expanded its public cloud-like GreenLake subscription offering under a Private Cloud Enterprise banner with eight new services: backup and recovery, block storage, compute operations management, data fabric, disaster recovery, hyperconverged infrastructure, and industry-vertical cloud services for customer engagement and payments.

HPEs transition from an on-premises supplier of hardware and software to a private and public cloud services supplier is being driven hard by CEO Antonio Neri, who characterizes GreenLake as the cloud that comes to you. The company said back in March that it was adding block storage services to GreenLake along with backup and recovery, and here we are three months later with the formal announcement.

It comes from HPEs Discover event in Las Vegas, where Neri said: Three years ago at HPE Discover, HPE committed to delivering our entire portfolio as a service by 2022. Today, I am proud to say that not only have we delivered on that commitment, we have become a new company. HPE GreenLake has emerged as the go-to destination for hybrid cloud, and our industry-leading catalog of cloud services enables organizations to drive data-first modernization for all their workloads, across edge to cloud.

As of today GreenLake has 65,000 customers worldwide and over one exabyte of data under management. HPE reported Annualized Revenue Run-Rate (ARR) of $829 million in its second 2022 quarter and triple-digit as-a-service orders growth for the third consecutive quarter.

With GreenLake for Private Cloud Enterprise, customers choose service types, consumption amounts, and service levels. It includes modular infrastructure and software, and supports the deployment of bare metal, virtual machines, and container workloads.

HPE delivers, installs, maintains, and updates the hardware and software involved, whether on-premises or in a colocation center. Customers select, manage, and modify their GreenLake services online through a central cloud-based console.

The Backup and Recovery Service protects Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instances and Elastic Block Storage (EBS) volumes. Customers can protect their VMs, deployed on any HPE or non-HPE storage technology, in three steps and in less than five minutes according to HPE. It is not based on HPEs Zerto technology. The service automatically retains local snapshots for instant data restores, performs local on-premises backups forrapid data recovery, and utilizes cloud backups for cost-effective, long-term data retention. The service includes data immutability for increased protection on-premises and on AWS.

We envisage this will likely spread to include the Azure and GCP clouds over time, as well as cloud-native workloads.

GreenLake for Block Storage is, HPE says, the industrys first storage-as-a-service that offers self-service and a 100 percent availability guarantee built in for mission-critical environments. It includes general-purpose, mission-critical, and business-critical tiers. The mission-critical tier is based on Alletra 9000 (Primera) hardware and software, and the business-critical tier uses Alletra 6000 (Nimble).

The mission-critical service is suitable for large-scale virtual, database, container, and consolidation environments including SAP HANA, Spark, Splunk, and Oracle workloads. The business-critical service has 99.9999 percent availability and typical use cases include medium-sized virtual and container environments, data warehousing, SQL, and test/dev.

The customer selects their desired outcome SLA, performance, capacity, and term with an AI-managed, self-service experience. HPE says it delivers these outcomes through the period of the contract by matching the best suited back-end storage array. No customer storage expertise is required.

HPE provides file and object storage services through GreenLake via partnership deals with Qumulo and Scality respectively. Cohesitys data management services are also available through GreenLake.

GreenLake for Compute Ops Management provides a cloud experience that simplifies and automates compute lifecycle management.

GreenLake for Data Fabric is a managed service that contains an analytic-ready data fabric and single data store for hybrid environments. It is powered by HPEs Ezmeral Data Fabric, which unifies files, objects, NoSQL databases, and real-time and batch streams across distributed locations. By unifying and preparing data for processing, data integrity increases because errors and duplicate files are removed. It provides a global namespace that connects distributed data across the enterprise.

GreenLake for Disaster Recoveryis based on HPEs acquired Zerto technology and has, HPE says, unlimited scale. Customers can recover from ransomware, IT outages or natural disasters, with recovery point objectives (RPOs) and recovery time objectives (RTOs) in minutes, to a state seconds before the disruption.

The HCI offering is based on HPEs Nimble/Alletra 6000 dHCI (disaggregated HCI) product.

GreenLake for Payments provides an end-to-end, pay-per-use payments service, combining the payments experience of Lusis TANGO and the distributed-transaction processing of HPE Nonstop for payments.

HPE says it is working on a collaboration with financial technology provider FIS, and its Ethos offering, to provide a real-time customer data platform that delivers intelligent engagement analytics. It claims that the insights from GreenLake with FIS Ethoswill enable businesses to deliver personalized data-driven customer engagement that can increase customer loyalty and overall profitability.
